  1. Dave In Houston

    Dave is one month post-surgery

Wow, Matty. Your statistics tell me you're a remarkable story. Did you log everything you ate? I feel like I should be logging but it's a real pain. The hospital recommends an app called Baritastic, but I don't feel like typing on the phone. In the past I've used a PC program called DietPower, but the user interface is really clunky. Right now I'm weighing portions carefully to keep from eating too much, but I'm not logging them. I have a big roll of fat around the waist. How much weight do I have to lose before that goes away? Also, did you tell people about the surgery? So far, I have told family and close friends. I suspect it will soon become common knowledge, but I'm not going out of the say to tell people. BTW, I'm actually down in Sugar Land.

Not losing after surgery 6 weeks out

Thank you both for making me feel much better. I had been feeling like I wasn’t doing something right because the weight loss stopped. Now I feel much better.

Not losing after surgery 6 weeks out

three week stall. If you do a search on that on this site, you'll find something like 17,000 posts on it (and no, I am NOT kidding). It happens to almost all of us (and it's not always the third week for everyone - but sometime during the first month or so after surgery). your rate of weight loss is fine. I think some people's expectations come from watching shows like "My 600 lb Life", but keep in mind that those people start off at MUCH higher BMI's than the average WLS patient. Your rate is fine. I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I ended up losing 100% of my excess weight (over 200 lbs). As long as you stick to your program and your general weight trend is downward, you're good.

    Calories per day?

Definitely speak with your team about a caloric range especially if it will make you feel more secure with what you’re doing. The whole process can be pretty stressful as it is. I was only given portion size, number of meals per day (1/4 cup three times a day to begin from the purée stage) & of course protein & fluid goals. Once you begin eating more solid foods & heal that little more your feel full sense will kick in as will your restriction if you eat too much. Plans are different as @Creekimp13 said and yours may have to be modified to suit your needs as you progress. I wouldn’t have succeeded on @Creekimp13’s plan - lol. I was eating less than 300 calories to begin & increased to about 700 for most of the weight loss period. I only eat about 1200 calories a day now in maintenance but I’m short & not out there running marathons or lifting weights at a gym 😁. Good luck & congrats on your surgery.
  5. Good evening everyone I’m new to the group. Im from NC and I’m having the gastric sleeve procedure 8/6/21. I’ve been in this process since 2017 and hit an obstacle when I found out I had sarcoidosis in 2018. That ultimately lead to me being on prednisone for about 2 years….and I gained a lot of weight which put my journey on hold. I found a new surgeon who actually listened to me and assessed my situation he agreed to do a stage procedure (gastric then bypass). I’m so ready for this I’ve been praying about it for years and in and out of depression behind weight and just life in general. I’m 32 years old no kids. I’m ready to live my life and not let my weight determine my day. Any tips pre-op would be helpful. I welcome suggestions.

    June Surgeries

Just doing a quick check in. I'm almost 3 weeks out of surgery. I went from 265 down to 251 and then hit a stall which I've had for nearly a week and a half. Hoping it's breaking as my weight finally went down by .4lbs today instead of just being the same freaking thing. I started using the Baritastic app at the recommendation of a friend and am loving it so far. Have also been trying to be better at eating at least 3 meals a day instead of just two and protein shakes. I'm trying to focus on getting my calories up a bit while hitting my protein and water goals. I will say that with the buffer time (30 minutes before and after) for drinking, paired with how slow I'm eating, it feels like I'm constantly eating. That being said, I'm still only getting in around 800 calories a day max. So that's a really surreal thing for me, to feel like I'm eating all the time, but still only be eating around 800 calories. I did have one instance where I ate too fast and threw up as a result. Throwing up was also a really interesting sensation. There was no stomach acid, so what came up was basically what went down plus some saliva. Not pleasant but not as bad as pre-surgery. Hopefully everyone is doing well and recovering without much issue!

Rant re: chairs in the doctors office

One of the things to look for in a good school, even a preschool, is approximately sized chairs and tables. It’s actually a significant sign you should look for. The same goes for your doctor’s office! You are worth it! If long term weight loss were so obtainable we would not need help and surgery to achieve it. There wouldn’t be a giant commercial industry surrounding it. I once went to a job interview with an African American woman who stood up for her rights during the interview. She was right! I decided after that to stop waiting to get on the inside and to make changes. Make positive changes now! By the way, the woman who spoke out got hired, not me. I’m so glad she got the job. She taught me something important.

Thanks again for this advice. After your message I haven't touched the stuff again and so far have been feeling ok! 2 weeks out tomorrow, down 7.5lbs from morning of surgery, 18.5lbs since beginning of June. Why is it I still feel frustrated when this is a HUGE amount of weight to lose in 4 weeks, got to keep reminding myself that. Tried taking the dog for a walk by myself tonight and I think it was a bit soon. Just so excited to move my body.
  9. Hello. My surgery was 5/18/21. Day of surgery weight was 305. Today I’m 285 which has been the same since week 3. I’m concerned because I should I feel like I should be losing more. I’m barely eating but when I do I feel nauseous for hours afterwards. Follow up with surgeon is on 7/1/21. Anyone experience this

    LGBTQIA?

I haven’t but I would be interested in coordinating to do that. Nice to know that it would be helpful! Welcome to to the forum - I would love to discuss the intersection of sexuality and weight gain.

    Calories per day?

My surgeon's group wanted us to reach 1200 calories a day as soon as we could. I did this at around 3-4 weeks out...eating 6 little 200 calorie "meals" a day. We were told to stay at 1200 during all of loss phase. I know this is VERY different advice than what many clinics give their clients. Some want people to stay below 1000 calories for a very long time to "take advantage of the window of loss". My doctors are part of a study addressing how extended periods of very low calorie diets may be corelated with rebound weight gain due to negative metabolic shift. They believe that for the best LONG TERM outcomes....eating calories closer to maintenance for healthy weight sooner...is better. I eat 1600 calories a day now, and have maintained the last two years with no weight gain. There will always be individual experiences and exceptions to every rule.

    Before and After Pics

Been a while since I’ve posted a before and after pic. Surgery weight was 271, current weight is 144lbs. I think I’m done losing now (bypass was 3/2/2020). My weight fluctuates between 142 and 145

    Calories per day?

Definitely a question for your surgeon or nutritionist. There are so many things that can factor into the “right” calorie goals—age, weight, activity level, history, etc. none of us could possibly give you a good answer for this question for you. We can probably all answer it for ourselves, but what works for us is not likely to work fine you.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I'm the 18th as well! I'm very excited but also a bit nervous. Still going back and forth wether this is the right choice for me. I know I'll probably never lose the weight without the surgery, but I'm afraid I'll fall back into old habits after having the surgery. Is anybody else having these doubt/concerns?
  15. Billho: Thank you so much! What is your favorite liquid protein to drink? I don't even know when my pre op diet will start. idk my surgery date yet BUT, I want to start trying different shakes and start doing low carb/ high protein now. CONGRATULATIONS on reaching your goal weight!!!

    Back to basics

Well today is the day, June 28th, and I have decided to really hunker down and try to lose the 10lbs I have left of regain from having Piper. I had lost ALL of my weight after having her but then Covid struck, we moved away for the summer and I gained about 15 lbs. I'm having a really hard time losing the weight from this and I wonder if my body is just happy to be where it's at, but I'm not. My clothes are all based around 130 so I'd be happy to be about 135. I was told the other day that I looked "too sickly" at 128-130 and that's not my goal to look like that, but I thought I looked pretty ok. I feel much better at 148 than I did at almost 300, but, mentally, I'm happy where I once was at 130. So I'm going to do a happy medium and pick 135 as my goal for now! Back to basics of protein, protein, and more protein -- and of course water, water and more water! hahahah Meal prepping and planning tonight and on Friday I'll order groceries for pick up (staying out of the grocery store as best as I can only temps me to buy Starbucks and food I don't need!). Cross my fingers I can see goal in a month -- I sure hope so!

    June Surgeries

I have to administer shots as well. My doctor was worried about blood clots because of my weight. I have a friend who started at a lower weight and had a different surgeon and did not have to do this. Luckily, I outsourced my duties...my husband has been doing it for me. I almost passed out when they described it to me, so I feel for you! I hope it gets easier!

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

my typical response when people comment on my weight loss is that I have been walking a lot (average 14,000 steps a day) and and eating less. That's all true and enough information to get past it. But I have told a handful of people that I trust about my surgery. I don't hide it if asked, but don't feel that it is something I need to broadcast to everyone. It's not everyone's business to know my medical history.

    May Surgeries - check in!

Hey all! I was sleeved on 5/10 and feeling absolutely great. I have had no complications and can stomach just about everything I eat (on plan) at this point. Although, like others have recently mentioned, my tastes have changed and sometimes I get sad when I think about going the rest of my life not being able to gorge on food. The thought of a buffet gives me anxiety because really - what do you choose when you want to choose it all?! Only discomfort I have started to get recently is the scar tissue under my skin where the incisions were. My doctor said to expect this because during surgery nerve-endings were cut and as they start to heal you can start to feel where the surgery happened. It's not painful at all. It just feels like a bruise when I press on it to clean in shower or something rubs up against it. Anyone else have this now being that you are at least 4 weeks out from surgery? Oh, and does anyone else think about the surgery and food and protein and water and what to have to eat that day like every waking moment? For me, it's obsessive. I have been losing on average half a pound a day so I sit there and calculate how many more days/months it will take to loose X amount of weight and I even factor in losing less a day as my BMI drops. Seriously, I feel crazy! haha
  20. I just found this site and joined and it looks like it’s going to be a big help for me. I’m 4 1/2 months in on my preop weight loss plan and I have really been struggling and making terrible decisions for the past month. And it showed up on the scale. I just wanted to say hello and see if anyone has any words of wisdom for someone who is struggling before the surgery even happens.

  21. I just Had my second meeting with my nutritionist. She has told me to keep a journal and I use myfitnesspal for that. I’ve been having some issues so she now has asked me to create meal plans for the week And be very formal about it. She reviews the information in myfitnesspal and gives me feedback on what I have done and what changes I need to make. She makes sure that I understand and I’m following the 30 rule and encourages me to eat more protein. Protein protein protein! Since I have been having some trouble over the last month in keeping with the program I am going to have another meeting with her but I think that’s an extra meeting. I have been encouraged to contact any of the weight loss staff if I have concerns or questions and if I felt that I needed additional time with a nutritionist that is available to me I believe.

Surgery scheduled for in the AM

nerves are normal, having something go wrong during the surgery is rare, and you WILL lose the weight if you're stay committed to your clinic's food plan. like creekimp said, your job right after surgery is to stay hydrated. And get your protein in, too - but hydration is even more important those first couple of weeks.

    LGBTQIA?

Did you make a LGBTQ community here?👀😍🥰 I would love to be part of it. My weight gain was partially due to challenges I faced in my sexual orientation journey in my early 20s for sure.

    May Surgeries - check in!

I'm coming up on 8 weeks next Wednesday, so hard to believe! I'd say that weight loss has been slower than I'd like. I am averaging 2 - 3 pounds a week. But every week so far has been a loss, so I celebrate that. I'm down 25 pounds since surgery, a total of 40 pounds with preop diet included. I seem to be able to tolerate pretty much everything so far. Water and other fluids are going down well. Protein shakes are better the last couple of weeks, they still taste super sweet, and not at all delicious, but I can get them down. I've started having small amounts of vegetables with my proteins. Tonight I tried carrot and asparagus! My major stress is worrying each day if I'm eating too much, or not getting in protein. I track on myfitnesspal and average 600 - 800 calories a day, my surgeon asked me to get in 800 -1000 and protein usually hits around 70 or 80.
  25. I am 10 years post sleeve. I got my sleeve at 54 years old. I was 5'3 and 320 pounds. Best thing I ever did. Honestly, I have never gotten down as low as some folks ..... nor as low as my surgeon would have liked.... but he actually told me that the goal is to lose and keep off 70% of your excess weight - that is considered a medical success. For me, that was losing and keeping off about 130 pounds. I am 65 years old. I went from a PLUS size 28 to about a 14/16 petite regular womens clothing. I work 40 hours a week, keep my house and raise chickens, and other critters up, support my adult daughter who has some medical issues. I organic garden vegetables and fruit , swim, take walks and feel great. I am healthier than I was at 40. I eat well - protein, salads, veggies and fruits. I watch carbs. I have learned how to eat so that I am satisfied - and eating a good balance of healthy fats and variety of foods. I also eat a treat every day. Heck, I'm 65 and I deserve my chocolate ! A couple of my good friends know about my surgery. They "would never" .... and they haven't. Both are not able to work, and have several weight and age related issues that I have managed to dodge. Sure I have my aches and pains... but I am moving and DOING and I am out there happy as heck !
