    Confused

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hii Toomany#'s! We are surgery buddies!! My two week diet started today and my surgery is on the 8th as well. My pro-op diet consists of four 8oz protein shakes a day, unlimited veggies (there is a list), one dairy a day, one fruit, and 64oz of water. What does your surgeon have you doing? I'm excited and nervous, too! I just pray these days fly-by. How are you feeling otherwise?
  3. Hello everyone, I realize I have to take two flights, stay four days in a UK AirBnB and take two more flights, all while on my soft foods stage. I’ve been really good at finding healthy, nutritious food while being at home since my surgery (Feb 3), but I’m concerned about what I’ll eat away from home. Does anyone have tips for what I can grab away from home? How to manage an airplane flight of 9 hours or so? Any advice is welcomed. Thank you.
  4. If you are having trouble eating more than one bite of food, you might want to call your surgery center. It's possible you have a stricture, which can be fixed. You might also be eating too big of a bite, not chewing enough, or eating too fast. I have heard of people having issues from their bras, but I think it was right after surgery (can't remember for sure). I am able to eat more food at 5 months out than I could at 6 weeks out. That's a good thing, but I have to be careful that I don't eat multiple times a day because that could cause weight gain. Hope you feel better soon!

    Normal Bites?

I take normal-sized bites. I didn't the first few weeks or months out of surgery, but I do now.

    Food coma

it may have to do with blood sugar. Starting about year 3, I started having occasional dizziness that I couldn't explain. Had a complete workup at the doctor's office. Nothing. Everything normal. The next time I noticed it, It was about two hours after I had a piece of cake. I mentioned it to my doctor - she thinks it was probably reactive hypoglycemia, which sometimes happens in RNY patients (not super common, but it does happen to some). She thought that my glucose level just happened to be normal at the time I had the workup, so it didn't jump out at them. She recommended I eat something every three hours - preferably a protein - but if I eat a carb, to be sure to at least pair it with a protein. That seemed to have done the trick. At least for me. That may not be going on with you, though - you might want to check with your doctor.

Hi Jessnole, Good luck with your upcoming surgery. Mine is March 8th. I started my two week diet today. I’m excited and nervous as well.
  8. I am now 2 weeks post op and I do still have stomach pain on my right which is where they remove part of your stomach but other than that it doesn’t feel to bad. Right after surgery I was a little sore at all the other incisions but that went away fairly quick. You can over eat and you can eat to fast I actually experienced it yesterday. I was only having broth and I think I just drank to fast and ended up having what is called dumping syndrome. Just remember after surgery listen to ur body pay attention and eat and drink slowly! Good luck on uour surgery!

    Soft drinks whilst out

At 8 weeks out, I went away with 6 friends with hubby to a All inclusive weeks holiday. I took loads of things to snack on in case of not being able to anything in the restaurant and didnt need much of it. Any way to the point, I drank a few slim tonics and then found Britvic Tomato juice. It came in a 200ml bottle and had 47 cals in it. I put lots of sauce in and pretended it was a bloody mary. It tasted deliciously healthy and full of goodness and a great change from blackcurrant and water .
  10. Hi! I got my gastric sleeve done 6 weeks back. Problem is, that if I am wearing a bra, it constricts my stomach/general area so much so I can barely eat one bite of food every 4-5 hours. That too when I move around a lot during those 4-5 hours - otherwise it just feels like it is stuck in my oesophagus. I know it is the bra’s constriction because eating is not that difficult when i don’t have it on. My questions are: 1. Has anyone felt the constriction because of a bra as well? I wear a very loose sports bra and the band is tight at all. 2. Apart from the usual restriction that is expected after a gastric sleeve, does eating eventually get a little easier?
  11. The dry mouth especially when you wake up is a awful sensation isnt it. So worse than waking full of a cold and having slept with your mouth open to breath because your nose is blocked. Just keep doing your best with the liquids and one day you will find its not a chore to drink anymore. Popsicles were my go to. I can do 3 gulps now at 12 weeks out. Happy drinking
  12. I don't understand why you're still having pre-op appointments if your surgery isn't scheduled and you were pre-approved 8 months ago. My process was 3-4 months start to finish.

Anybody recently post op and healing?

Im on my day 6 today. I was in the hospital for 5 days due to oxygen level dropping down after surgery. Im alright now. On my day 2 I already started to sit n walk . Cos it will help to pass gas out. So u will have less pain. 4oz of shake will make me full. It took around 90mins for me to finish it up. 15ml each time.. i still have a lil bit of pain on my left side. I still cant take capsule vitamins. Just a small size pill im good. U can try to walk around in your house for 20mins 2/3 times a day.

    Food coma

I get this. I feel like no matter what I eat I pass out. Doesn't feel like I go to sleep it feels like I pass out. I can be out 20 minutes to 3 hours. I have type two diabetes and because my HBA1c is kept low with meds they won't listen. They say it's normal after a hearty meal. ICANT EAT A HEART MEAL. Does it make you feel weak and confused after wards
  15. Hi I’m 3 yrs out from my surgery..just wondering if anyone is having an issue with what I call food coma right after a meal.. It seems like no matter what I eat it could be the most healthy thing and right after I eat I crash real hard and get very sleepy..even sometimes after my premier protein drinks..I even drink the espresso ones with caffeine and make smoothies with fruits and veggies and still crash after any advice appreciated..

    Soft drinks whilst out

I just have water. Ask for a slice of lemon or lime so people don’t immediately think you’re just drinking water. In time you may be able to tolerate/be allowed to have some carbonation (sparkling water, soda water). You can stir it vigorously so some of the carbonation reduces & if you take it slowly a lot will abate as you sip. I went out for a ladies lunch last week & two of us just had water while the others all had wine or champagne. It’s certainly cheaper 😉. It can be a bit of a change of mind set initially if you’re used to drinking alcohol or carbonated drinks when you go out. Honestly, I sometimes had an alcoholic drink if I went out when I was past month 2 of the losing phase. I would have one glass & sip for literally hours & it was only about once a month.
  17. Stumbled upon this article this morning: https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2021-09-24/collagen-skin-care-what-is-it-how-good-is-it/100431694 It basically says the body can’t absorb the collagen found in supplements. There is no real research to support the taking of collagen except that done by the companies that make it. 🙄 The slowing of your hair loss @SummerTimeGirl could be the natural conclusion of the rapid hair loss cycle. It usually only lasts 3 or so months. It’s more likely due to your increased Protein intake than the collagen. 🙂

    No Caffeine

I was offered coffee in hospital the first night. It was a couple of weeks before I actually wanted coffee again, but a daily soy latte is my little treat. It definitely seems to be a "thing" for some surgeons, but thankfully mine has never put brakes on coffee. That it's not a universal thing would definitely make me question it if I was told "no".

    Depression

I'm both a slow loser, and a serial staller. I've lost weight post-surgery at the same rate I did when I tried the old-school calorie counting. I've never had the "honeymoon period" folk on here talk about. I've lost count of how many stalls I've had, and have just this week finally broken another three week stall of zero weight loss. Like you, I follow my plan to the letter, do regular exercise, and know I eat at a large calorie deficit. So I absolutely know how you feel! But as The Greater Fool said - you cannot compare yourself to others, and you cannot let yourself be ruled by the scale. The weight IS coming off, and if it's coming off slower, that's not a bad thing! With luck my slow rate will give my skin the best chance of bouncing back. The trick is to enjoy your own journey without worrying about others, and to celebrate your own little milestones and victories. Because they're happening.

    Normal Bites?

I'm six months out from bypass surgery, and I can now take normal bites. It's essential to eat slowly and chew thoroughly, however. It did take me a long time to be able to get to a "normal" way of eating. I had a good four months of only being able to eat 1/4 cup maximum twice a day, and taking the tiniest of bites. It took time, however. It's a long road that does settle into something more regular, but you have to ride out the early weeks and months.

    Sleeping on incisions

I had my one week post-surgery follow up with the surgeon's PA today. They removed the staples and put on steri-strips (told me to leave them in place until they fall off by themselves after showering). They told me it was safe to sleep on my side, that the sutures were healed enough to be safe and it was a matter of tolerating any pain. I'm not really having any incision pain so it shouldn't be an issue.
  24. 2 weeks post op with my vsg and feeling so thirsty. My mouth is always dry even when sipping down my water and Gatorade. When can I start chugging down my water!!??? Help!!

    Depression

The stalls are upsetting but they do pass. Mostly what I have heard is 1-3 weeks but some have lasted longer. As long as your are sticking to your plan and not near maintenance though the loss will start again. Most times dropping a few pounds real quick when it does.
