I'm 7.5 months out and my monthly losses were: 18(pre-op), 16, 15, 13, 12, 10, 13, 13... I've only lost 2.2 so far in September, so it's slowed down dramatically. My surgery weight was 291.6. -
Anyone experienced surgical postponement for medical issues?

I am very sad and depressed right now.. half way through the six-month pre-bariatric program at my hospital, I finally met with the surgeon a month ago. He determined : 1) because I was still living on Prednisone for my Myasthenia Gravis, and had had surgical complications 4 years ago after an automobile accident left me with a perforated colon; and 2). a knee injury which left me in a wheelchair for 3 months this spring created DVT blood clots- that I was not a candidate for elective surgery at this time. I cried for days afterward. In my car, in the grocery store, in my art studio. I could not stop crying. I live with a rare neuro-muscular disease, and finally had to be placed on high dose steroids for it (100 mg/day) 19 years ago. Or should I say, 140 lbs ago? Steroids down to 10 mg/day now with IVIG infusions every 4 weeks. Evidently IV immunoglobin doesn’t effect surgical healing the way that Prednisone does. Dr. pointed out that even if I had been otherwise healthy, the DVTs alone would have postponed the surgery by 10-12 months. We made a loose date for reevaluation in June 2019, if my neurologist can get me off of the steroids completely six months prior by increasing the frequency of the IVIG doses. I was looking into this surgery 4 years ago right before the bus accident, and the possibility of finally having it got me through the multiple horrific resection surgeries. I am still eligible for the sleeve gastrectomy, but know that it will take fortitude to stick with the ‘non-surgical weight loss program’, rehab and exercising and prednisone tapering until my reevaluation in the Spring. It just feels like a dream slipping away, and I am having trouble staying motivated with my program. Has anyone else experienced surgical postponements for underlying medical conditions? One thing that my surgery buddy kept impressing on me...it's a goal. Something to aim for. Not a death sentence if you don't make it! I don't think I made it through all 64oz until about 10 days after surgery (and remember, everyone is different). -
I was sleeved on 8/20. Lost 10 pounds quickly (6 days) then stalled for a week and a half. Now 21 days out I am at 16 pounds. I just started losing again a few days ago. I feel your pain.

This helps tremendously. I was feeling all alone in this process. For liquids I was told to be on 300-400calories, but not sure how that changed once in purees. I will try to relax a bit more regarding the process, I just don’t want to do anything wrong or to hurt my new stomach. Thank you again. I'm almost 6 weeks out and I agree with this though I'm one to weigh often. Focus on your protein and fluid goals. I stalled at the end of my 2nd week and it lasted approx 10 days. It was frustrating but after that, I've been seeing the scale go down bit by bit. I can share with you what my nutritionist has told me starting with the pureed stage which really was part of my first 2 weeks after the first 24 hours (which only allowed drinking water and chicken broth) and called the Funnel Diet. If it can fit though a funnel, it is ok. Still drink protein shakes. Aim for 40-60 g of protein from shakes. Calories were 300-500 per day. It's important to pick low carb and low fat foods. You really want feel restriction on this state or with pureed however, I was allowed to start scrambled eggs during the 2nd week. My weeks 3-4 were textured and soft foods which included anything I had already eaten and I could add 1/4 c of textured foods like ground/shredded meats, fish, etc. The guideline was that if you can mash it with a fork, you can eat it. Chew, Chew, Chew. The calories were 400-700 and still get 40-60 grams of protein through shakes and 64 oz of water. After week 2 is when I was told to start with supplements and vitamins. The next stage came at week 5 and it really was not much different than week 3-4 except My protein went to 60-90 and I was told to try to get most of my protein from food. I only drink 1 shake per day now. I'm not supposed to drink 10 min before, during ,or 20 minutes after a meal. (some people are 30) I have a list of foods to avoid and am sticking with that at least until I get closer to my goal weight and then I will eat some of the foods from time to time or on special occasions. The other tip I was given is to aim for my carb grams to not exceed protein grams at every meal and snack. Good luck and you will be moving to real food pretty quickly! -
I went from a 44H to a 38DD! I am satisfied with buying less expensive bras at $10 from Walmart or wherever vs $60 from Lane Bryant. When im finally at my stable size I'll get fancier lol and buy from Victoria's Secret.

How much fiber? I try to keep my carbs per meal less than 10 net carbs. Keeping my daily no more than 40 actual carbs per day. I avg at about 27 net carbs -

You may be eating alot more food than most at your stage with alot of ingredients. This will add up very quickly. I suggest cutting all portions in half or trying to stick to simpler foods without sauces. Also it may be helpful to look for alternate types of the foods you like, low carb gluten free, low/no fat. These tend to have less cals. Weigh/measure your nuts because they are usually at least 160 Cal per 28-30 grams, that can be a whole meal replacement. You need more water/fluids, but less coffee. Triple your water intake and watch the kilos fall off. Honestly everyone is different but at 10 months out, I don't even eat this much. Check in with your NUT/team to see where they want you to be. You could have had so many more worse things than what you had. Look at it this way, you have to have some fat and dairy in your diet. Avocado is awesome for you. You literally probably ate 10 bites at the most. You would have loaded it up and ate the whole thing pre-op right? This is all about a life change. You're not going to be able to avoid going out to at all the time. This was a good test for you and I think you passed with flying colors. My first trip to Chipotle included rice in my bowl so already you are doing better than I did! LOL!!!!! -
Hi New to forum. Like info on gastric sleeve , anyone in The Villages Fl. ,what Dr. would u recommend. I am 70 years old. Also need to have full knee replacement, had left one done 3.5 yrs. ago, I am at same weight I was then, can't find orthopedic surgeon to do it, they say to obese. I am 5' 10" 338lbs. I am in 32162 area will travel if necessary.HELP THANK YOU

Serious second thoughts - surgery in 24 hours!

So I was reading an post yesterday and now I am having serious second thoughts. I may not even show up tomorrow to surgery. The post was about Reactive Hypoglycemia, a side effect to bypass that can develop 2 the 10 years post bypass. In the post, the patient had symptoms 1 to 2 times a year at first and now is having them 2 to 5 times a week. Patient occasionally passes out because of it. When I had my sleeve six years ago I had experienced those symptoms and I just thought it was because I forgot to eat. It was a weird feeling of dizziness, confusion, and I was with a client at the time and I nearly passed out. It scared the crap out of me. I started doing research online and discovered an article from 2017 that identified that this is happening to 1/3 of bypass patients and is not something that is discussed typically with there doctor. Reactive hypoglycemia may be related to dumping syndrome but can be far more dangerous. In extreme cases the bypass needs to be reversed to fix the problem which brings me to my fear. In my case they will not be able to reverse my bypass after I have it as they are removing the stomach because the polyps I developed taking PPIs for Gerd. So now my challenges is do I live with Gerd and run the risk of getting Barrett’s syndrome and Possible esophageal cancer or do I have a bypass and run the risk of getting reactive hyperglycemia ? Thoughts anyone? -

No IF yesterday as expected, with an early breakfast and dinner plans. Unfortunately I also ate craptasticaly 2 of the meals, and not so great for the third. But protein, fluids, and supplement goals met, so that is something. So @FluffyChix you did better than I did confining yourself to one meal! Had a good day today, ate within a 4 hr window. Pushed out to a late lunch. Went to a Japanese Shabu Shabu and Korean Hot Pot fusion restaurant. It was AYCE, so I knew I'd never get my money's worth. But then learned the price was $30 ! So I was determined to get at least some of my money's worth. So I basically grazed over a long meal. I'm good with this because it was all pure protein and condiments. But I paid like $10/oz of meat, so, yeah . Happy that protein, supplement and fluid goals were all met. (I consider protein goals met if I am over 50g) Feel better @GreenTealael -

I am scheduled for October 4th!!!! So that’s pretty cool, Oct 3rd go in for pre-opt testing. And start my 10 liver shrinking diet on Sept 23. Let’s be buddies October friends!!! -
Before surgery I was on 80 Units Lantus, 300 mg Invokana, 1.8 mg Victoza, and 2000 mg Metformin and I had a Hemoglobin A1c of 8.3%. I was also on 200 mg of Metoprolol succinate, 0.1mg Clonidine, and 10 mg of chlorthalidone for hypertension. I stopped all diabetes medications the night before surgery except the Victoza. I also went off the Chlorthalidone and the Metoprolol the night before surgery. I was able to stop the last blood pressure medication within a month post-surgery. I also reduced my Victoza to 0.6 mg (still have small Dawn effect) and at 4 months post-op my Hemoglobin A1c was 5.6. All I can offer for advice is to monitor you sugars and blood pressure, and work with your doctor(s) to reduce the amount of medication as your numbers improve. Good luck to you!

It sounds like your new job has helped a lot- 7000 steps daily is nothing to sneeze at in and of itself! Woot! Woot! How you get there is nothing compared to the determination to get there. I remember in my pre op prep, we met with a physical therapist who reviewed all kinds of research about exercise and its role in long term weight management. The piece of research I have seared in my brain is that research of large number of people who lost a considerable amount of weight and kept it off at least 5 years, they averaged 250-300 minutes of physical exercise per week. There are as many types of exercise and combinations of exercise as there are people, so I'm glad you are experimenting to find the ones YOU enjoy! For me, I LOVE exercising outdoors. Living in Minnesota makes that challenging during some months of the year. I am very iffy about going outside for any length of time if the mercury doesn't hit at least 10 degrees, and of course it requires proper clothing. I have to laugh thought that now I have not one, but two gym memberships (both inexpensive, thankfully, and one reimbursed by health insurance as long as I got at least 8 times per month)), a full wardrobe of work out gear, 2 different gym bags- one stocked for morning workouts (all the gear I need to get ready for work), and one that is smaller, more lightweight, in case I am exercising AFTER work. Most recently, I purchased 10 lb dumb bells for use at home for when I just don't feel like going to the gym. Years ago I had picked up one of those big exercise balls for use sitting at my desk at home, and I'm going to bring it upstairs from the basement for use doing abdominal strengthening exercises at home. You will find what works for you! Way to stick with it!

Early on it's harder but setting reminders and goals make it possible. All fluids count toward your hydration goal but water is superior and essential so you need the majority of it to be pure additive free water. I found drinking hot items like tea, coffee even broth went quicker than pure water making it easier to real the goal. I'm currently 10 months out and can drink like before surgery. -

My doctor just said I have to be able to chew my food to a pulp before I can eat it for now. So I’m eating soups/stews/casserole like things that are super soft after long cooking because low and slow mean more flavor and tender. Day one I had a pretty. Bland version of my favorite soup, but now I’m alive again so I’m back to dry roasting my spice blends, making sure color makes it on to my onions, garlic and meat etc and such so that layers of flavor build. 😍 I’m pretty sure I could have shrimp which has 10 grams of protein in it. However I’d have to come up with a w30 cocktail sauce first to try it with lol. :) I want to try some fried rice too however instead of rice I’d of course use cauliflower rice. -

Sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. You are so inspiring. Just some advice since I’m post op day 3...get a heating compress. It has helped me so much. Make sure you get anti nausea meds prior to the surgery and after. I have lavender and peppermint essential oils to help me relax and make my pillows smell good. Oh yeah, a lot of pillows. I made sure to buy a king size pillow and took it to the hospital. It has helped me a whole lot. I have like 10 pillows on my bed lol 😆 I also bought some rose water toner spray to spritz on my face for a little pick me up. Those little extra things have helped me. Take care!!! -
I'm almost 3 weeks out and stalled this week, in fact gained 1.5 - 2lbs from the 10 post surgery. Just believe in the program it will work. Folks here who have been through this give sound advice. If you're still unsure, contact your surgeon.

I also am saddened by,your loss, I had a son die suddenly at 31, he died of an aortic dissection but he also had undiagnosed cardiomegaly, we found out a lot from,his autopsy. And he also was strong and athletic. Been 10 and half years, still miss him dearly. Do your weight loss surgery as an memorial to your sister, yo7 know she wanted you to have it. And I would,love to think a portion of her spirit lives on in you. incedently,i just had my surgery September 5th and am still recovering. 🙏prayers for you now and in the future.
