Thanks Dee... I'm not a big drinker - Yes I drink - but really only when I go out to a concert or party (sometime way too much ;0) Good for you to quit drinking on a daily bases - those are empty calories - I rather eat my calorie instead of drink them :0).. My doc say a drink is fine it's not against the rules - you just have to budget for them.. I'm still a night eater - but what I have done is budget my calories to compensate for it - I am allow 3 meals and 2 Snacks - I would eat lite for bf & lunch and no snacks in between - I saved them for evenings - during the day at work I can ignore my hunger - but at nite and at home forget about it - so I always kept about 300 cal for evening snacks - healthy choice sf fudgesicles - sf choc puddings - dannon lite & fit yogurts & 100 cal snack pack popcorn You have the right mindset - I think this will help you to be successful on your journey.. Suggestion - take hope & try out of your vocabulary - replaced it with I WILL !!!! Posititive Affirmations really do work !!! Hugs Janet -
Everything BLERDGirl said. I went to a conference back in October (only 4 days) and that's exactly what I did....shaker bottle, protein powder that mixed well with water instead of milk), protein bars and grabbed fruit at breakfast. There was always something I could nibble on at the luncheons, plus jerky and nuts are easy thing to pack along. If you've got a mini fridge, you could try and get to a store first thing and stock up on cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cheese and those tuna fish lunch packets that may or may not need refrigeration.

Taking Prescription Medicine with the Band
CherylB replied to reagansmom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Regansmom, I'm the one posting about the problem. Just click on the underlined link in your first reply and you will see the post regarding this. I'm still working on this problem and have contacted my pharmacy team and was told there are no chewable or liquid meds that I'm taking. I'm still working on this problem and have decided to try to cut and swallow small pieces and to put capsules in liquid yogurt. I will be talking to my surgeon tomorrow and my primary care physician shortly about this. Take Care. -

Hey there! Congrats and good luck! The hotel you'll be staying in is very nice...it's close to an HEB so you can buy water, c-lite, and yogurt. If I were you I would take a pill crusher...You won't be able to pass those pills. I was lucky someone had one I borrrowed. Also if you go to the Sanborn's, they have chicken broth. It's listed as consume de pollo. I had my last meal there just because I wanted to feel normal at a table with others. I squeezed lime juice in mine mmmmm tasty! Everyone at the hotel is really nice. Oh yeah, make sure you buy a calling card at HEB! The cashiers have them up front. We bought on for 100 pesos that had like 60 minutes or so...also if you use it at the hotel you have to tell them to open the line. If you are having your surgeries at San Jose Hospital, you will not be dissappointed! It is immaculate. Good Luck to you both. Let me know how it goes! Happy New Year!!! -

style="margin:0;padding:0;background-color:#d8dde8;color:#5a5a5a;font:normal 13px helvetica, arial, sans-serif;position:relative;"> Hey BariatricPal Members! Time sure flies, and it’s hard to believe it’s “Back to School” season already! I hope you have been meeting your summer goals – but not to worry if you haven’t. We have plenty of ideas for closing out the summer on a strong note. Here’s the run-down of this newsletter. Back to School Time: Packing a WLS Lunch Member Spotlight in the Newsletter: Meet catwoman7! Back to the Grind after Summer Vacation Enjoy the newsletter, then do something good for yourself – whether it’s stocking up on local produce, scheduling that first surgeon consult, or taking an after dinner walk. Then login to the BariatricPal forums and join the conversations! Can’t wait to see you there. Sincerely, Alex Brecher Founder, BariatricPal Back to School Time: Packing a WLS Lunch Sending your kids back to school probably means getting back in the habit of packing a lunch. Their lunches are probably pretty regular: maybe you send them off with a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and a few snacks to get them through the day. Whether you have children or not, there’s a parallel to a children’s sack lunch after getting weight loss surgery. You probably take a more active role in your own meals, and that can include packing your lunch way more often than depending on a restaurant or vending machine to supply it for you. If you don’t know the first thing about putting together a healthy lunch or you’re having trouble coming up with easy, portable lunch ideas, here’s a little bit of help. Protein Is the Centerpiece Gourmet meal or sack lunch, protein is the essential component of any meal after weight loss surgery. Pair it with veggies, fruit, or a little starch for a nutrient-packed meal. You have all kinds of options for a brown bag lunch. Here are few ideas. Fat-free tuna salad on whole-grain crackers or cucumber slices. All-natural turkey breast and low-fat cheese slices rolled in lettuce leaves. Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with berries or sliced melon or peaches. Greek salad with low-fat feta, grilled chicken breast, romaine lettuce, olives, and tomatoes. Don’t Forget the Snacks You may not be eating much food right at lunchtime, but you may need some additional snacks to keep you going through the morning and afternoon. Think protein, fiber, and portion-controlled as you pack your lunch. What about…? String cheese/cheese sticks. Almonds or other nuts. Cherry tomatoes and carrot sticks. Grapes and tangerines (clementines). All-natural jerky: beef, turkey, fish, or soy. Protein bars or shakes (and if you’re looking for some great-tasting ones, check out the selection at The BariatricPal Store. Use coupon code BPNLAUG2016 to get 10% off of your first purchase!). Invest in Some Containers A brown bag works okay, but you might want to bump it up a notch. A reusable lunch bag isn’t just better for the environment. It can also keep your food insulated. Add a few small containers with tight-fitting lids to your collection, and you’ll be ready to take leftovers, salads with a separate container of salad dressing, and dips such as peanut butter or hummus. Member Spotlight in the Newsletter – Meet Catwoman7! We’re delighted to put this month’s spotlight on catwoman7. She’s a RNY gastric bypass patient who has lost well over half of her body weight. She started at 373 lbs. and is down over 200 lbs.! Catwoman7 had been thinking about surgery for 10 years. She had planned to wait until she turned 65 so Medicare would cover it, but realized she may not make it to 65 if she didn’t lose some weight! So, she changed her health insurance policy to a more expensive one which covered the surgery and got surgery done at age 55. Her surgeon recommended RNY or VSG. Since she already had gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), she opted for RNY gastric bypass. It turned out to be a good choice – besides the remarkable weight loss, she hasn’t had an episode of reflux since surgery! Catwoman7 says life has changed a lot since surgery. She no longer sticks out in a crowd. People don’t stare at her anymore, and men who are looking at her aren’t just looking at her weight! She doesn’t have to worry about fitting into things anymore: she won’t get kicked off planes, she doesn’t need an extension belt, booths aren’t an issue anymore, she can wear regular-sized clothes, and she can use a standard scale. Life is a lot more comfortable all around. Exercise is easier, she sweats less, and she can do every pose in yoga class. She can cross her legs, paint her toenails, and tie her shoes. Her arthritic joints ache less. She doesn’t have to fear meeting new people or getting her photo taken anymore. There were some challenges along the way. The food restrictions were tough. Also, catwoman7 didn’t feel completely “normal” in the initial post-op stages, although that passed and now she feels great! Now, her biggest challenge is hunger, which returned around 6 months post-op. She is aware of it, and is careful not to snack more than she should or to let bad habits creep in and cause regain! Catwoman7 started out using BariatricPal for information and advice. She continues to visit it every day to keep her focus. She says it’s like a support group. Her advice to others is to stick to the plan. Remember, “you have given yourself an incredible gift – don’t blow it!” The weight will come off with patience. Thanks, catwoman7, for being in our member spotlight and sharing your story and advice. If YOU can think of someone you’d like to see in the spotlight, let Alex Brecher know. Send a PM with the subject line “Member Spotlight.” You can select yourself, too! We want to hear your story! Back to the Grind after Summer Vacation The summer can feel a little different than the rest of the year. Even if you don’t have a long vacation or get the chance to leave town for a while, the summer months can feel a little slower and more relaxed than other times of the year. When you also consider the heat that can zap energy and weaken willpower, it may not be much of a surprise if the scale isn’t showing quite what you’d like. It’s not yet panic time, though! Getting back on track can be as simple as taking small steps. Here are just a few ways to get back to the basics – the same tried and true basics that successful weight loss surgery patients everywhere depend on. Hit your numbers. Get your 65 or more grams of protein per day to fight hunger and stay nourished, and stick to your recommended calorie limit – often 1,200 per day in the post-op period and 1,400 or more per day while losing weight or maintaining. Hydrate. Boost metabolism, fight hunger, and increase energy by drinking plenty of water all day (except at meals, of course!). Keep a full water bottle at your side to remind you to sip, sip, sip. Get moving. If the heat is still too much for you to safely and comfortably exercise outdoors, consider your indoor options. Larger gyms and smaller workout studios can be cool, comfortable places to get in some cardio and weights, and explore options for fun group fitness classes. Watch your portions. Portions can creep up if you let your guard down, and just a little bit of awareness about portion sizes can get the pounds to start coming off again. That’s about it for this newsletter – I hope it was useful to you. Thanks for all of your support for BariatricPal, and see you on the boards! · Unsubscribe from all BariatricPal E-Mail. -
Decent tasting Protein shake mix
wanderingspirit replied to Havens's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded 4/8 have been using both the chocolate and vanilla EAS Sams has it very reasonable. I add 2 scoops to different recipes for protein shakes that are on line. One of my favorites is Chocolate, strawberry yogurt, and banana.. tastes like a banana split that has melted. Also adding different SF coffee flavorings I use DiVinci adds a different flavor. My dr and nutritionist just said experiment with flavors and fruits or other things that you like. Squash with pumpkin pie spice and sugar twin brown sugar is good to. -
One thing no one tells you about is bandster hell and yes you do have to diet just like before the band to lose weight during this time. Here is a blog I posted about bandster hell, I hop it helps. It’s Not Bandster Hell…It’s the Waiting Room of Band Opportunity I read few blogs today of folks that are in the proverbial Bandster Hell. Some are eating and frustrated, some are using Weight Watchers to fill the void and others are just hungry. I do think that LapBand medical community needs to be a little more effective in helping people through this phase of the process. My take on things is they do a great job upfront with the sales pitch and the pre-op prep. I think most doctors do a good job with the operation day and the basic post-op recovery. However, there seems to be a decided gap between the operation and the restriction phase of the band process. Which as we all know has been labeled Bandster Hell or BH for this blog. So for those of you in, or approaching BH, here is a check list to think about: 1. Avoid Consumption as Usual – it seems fairly common that once you are basically healed, many people can eat all they want and some like to test the limits of what you can eat. Needless to say this is not what we want to do. Just, assume that you can eat like the old you, but don’t do it. 2. Prepare a BH Menu – Knowing the BH is coming, plan a special menu that is healthy and helps you keep the right habits until you have restriction. I would plan it just like you were at restriction just don’t beat yourself up if the portions are bigger during this time. One person was doing Weight Watcher, some do South Beach, but whatever it is knowledge and planning are power here. 3. Focus on 5-6 Meals a Day – For me the best way to manage BH is to get some 8oz dishes with lids (I got mine at Smart and Final) then plan on eating every 3-4 hours. This keeps me focused on small meals, but allows me to have some extra healthy food. 4. Get Your Protein – Use whey Protein to help you get enough protein. I mix mine with yogurt and blueberries, oatmeal and other foods to load up on it. 5. Focus on Exercise – This is a great time to get your exercise program going and that will help you interim weight management, and make the time when you do have restriction more productive. 6. You Are Not Failing – BH is part of winning in the long term. You are supposed to go through this part of the journey. Don’t beat yourself up. This time is available to you to prepare for the restriction phase of the process 7. You Did Not Do This For Nothing – Reading hundreds of these threads from folks who have walked through the valley of BH, all agree when you get to the other side it will be worth it for you. You did not deal with Pre-Op, spend the money, or go through surgery for nothing. 8. Embrace the Process – This is one of the stages of BH, don’t fight it, make it work for you. Focus on picking good foods, get your body in better shape with exercise and focus on the positive. Like many of you I am trudging my way through BH. I am staying focused getting to the other side and finding the promised land of restriction.

It's been 7 weeks since surgery and I still cant eat lots of stuff. Like chicken and hamburger. I can eat cheese, yogurts and Protein shakes. If I try to eat any kind of solids like chicken or meats , I get that hurting feeling at the top of my stomach below the chest!! I knew this was going to be hard , but it hurts to eat .

I'm just curious because I keep seeing mashed potatoes suggested by others. If were supposed to have Protein how can we be allowed to have mashed potatoes?? You don't need to worry about protein just yet. Mashed potatoes, ceam of wheat, applesauce, yogurt, cottage cheese. Are you drinking any Protein drinks? I drink a Premier Protein every day for Breakfast even at 8 months post op...start my day with 30 grams of protien. -
I like Dr. Pronce's diet. He puts you on a three day yogurt diet.

So I can't find a forum for spouses. So I was hoping some of you can give me some tips. My husband's surgery is Monday. We live 4 hours from the hospital and he will have to stay 8-10 days in a hotel. I have to go back for 4 days because my job. After that I will be out of work until May/June (seasonal jobs). I don't want to be the a-hole who dangles food in front of him, however eating out until he is ready is unrealistic for me. How do I strike a balance? During this pre-op stage I've been good about eating at work (a restaurant) and then having yogurt or soup at home. When work stops next week, all my meals will be at home (except when we travel for the surgery.). I can't keep up soups and yogurts at home or weeks. (note- I'm an avid hiker and average 28 miles of walking a week, so I need calories.) I know some people are different, but how long was it before you were okay with food being around? What other things could your SO been more supportive about? I've read gas is an issue. Which is scary because between him and our English bulldog its already pretty gassy around here 😯. But seriously, any other side effects I should be aware of? I'm for the surgery, so that is not an issue. I just dont know anyone who has been through to ask.

Use a program like myfitnesspal.com to log what you eat and keep track of every bite you take at least initially. What I found was that I was getting more protein than I thought. Every bite of string cheese, greek yogurt and scrambled egg added to my total. I have to break my meals up into 4 or 5 small meals to get it all in but I make my protein goals most days.
-
It's a continual struggle for me. I am 12 weeks post-op and am supposed to be eating 80 grams of protein a day. I start each day with a protein drink (17 grams) and then eat three meals of at least 15 grams of protein. I eat a lot of fish, lunch meat, ground hamberger, cheese, greek yogurt. I eat very few fruits and vegetables since I can hardly finish the protein. I eat zero breads, rice, pasta. If I ate those things, I would never have room for the protein items. At night I sometimes have a protein bar if I still need another 15 grams of protein. My nutritionist wants me to eat three squares plus one snack a day. No grazing throughout the day. At the 6 month mark, I have to wean off the protein drink and up the protein per meal to 20 grams. I just do the best I can each day and focus on eating protein first which usually turns into protein only. I will say that each day I am able to eat a bite more, mostly a fruit. Yesterday I had scrambled egg with one strawberry sliced. A month ago I would have only been able to finish a portion of the egg, no fruit at all. I haven't used the protein shots but several on this board recommend them. Others mix Special K protein powder into their waters. Keep trying diferent things and you will find something that works for you. I have lost 57 pounds and am very happy I had the surgery! I feel no hunger and don't desire large volumes of food like I used to. Good luck with your surgery!

I think most people do pretty well with Greek yogurt. I might start out with all natural just because artificial sweeteners and flavors can be a bit hard on the tummy. You are eating so little now that the extra calories in all natural yogurt won't hurt you IMO. -

I agree that yogurt would be a good place to start. Also mashed potatoes and thin cream of wheat. -
I noticed you said tuna gets stuck. I was wondering if you eat it dry.... I eat tuna packed in olive oil (drained) and then mixed with low fat mayo. This is so "wet" that I haven't had trouble with it getting stuck. Another thing I have at lunch is ranch dip mix made with plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. It's super delicious, and I enjoy cherry tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, fresh spinach and sliced turkey dipped in it. (Some people do have a problem with broccoli florets, so be careful.) Also: hummus with veggies and one or two whole week crackers. Or a garden burger patty with sliced tomato and avocado. Bread is a big issue for me, so I don't even bother with a bun. Good luck to you and happy lunching!
-
Actually an egg and bacon isn't a bad choice at all. Both high Protein... the bacon is high in fat though, so I would limit that. Sausage biscut from MickeyD's... not a good choice. I would avoid. Bread is not easy to eat for most of us. I avoid it. Cereal, depending on the kind, is also not a great choice. High in carbs and sugars. Have you tried Greek yogurt? Stick to the outer rim of the grocery store. Fresh is key. Stay away from processed and packaged food.

Well, I spoke too soon. I started having mushies yesterday and by evening I had horrible acid reflux and that pain again. UGH! So, I was on full liquids today agian. I still can't tolerate just Water. I tried (just now) about 1/4 of yogurt to see how that works because I'm starting to get hungry lately. I'm worried this acid will never go away and I won't be able to tolerate food or water.

2nd/Third - Follow Up Fill Experiences
SpideyMom replied to John337's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well, I'm back from my quickly-scheduled 2nd fill! At first the surgeon put in 1 cc, but the Water was going down like a slow drain, I told him. It wasn't coming back up, but I could definitely feel that it was much, much tighter than it had been! After discussing it a while with me and his assistant, we all agreed that it was best to take a little bit out because he really felt that I would probably have trouble over the weekend. So, he took out about half. So I now have about 6.5 cc in my 10 cc band. He told me I could come back in 2-3 weeks if that wasn't enough, but otherwise, come back in 6 weeks. He also said he only wants to put in 0.5 ccs each time now. He's very conservative. Super nice guy, though! :tongue_smilie: So tonight will be Soup or a Protein drink, and tomorrow will be yogurt and mushies. Here's to more restriction!!! :frown: -
Hi. I'm Tracy and I will be banded on the 16th. I am from the Philippines and I'm still in college. Classes will start on the 26th of May. I'm thinking of being absent for a week since only orientations and other little things happen on the first week to have more time to recover. Any tips? I'm excited as hell! I went to the grocery a while ago and got myself a month's supply of soups, yogurts, crackers, milks and juices. Any tips? What should I bring along with me to the hospital? coz I'll be staying for 3-4 days? My doctor will not release me if I'm feeling back to normal.
-
is that normal? i went into the hospital at 348lbs. after surgery, and the IV's, i was up to 353. this morning i weighed in at 328. I know that at least 5lbs of that is Water weight from the IV's...but is that normal? i don't feel run down. i've been pretty good with my Protein drinks (at least 1 a day - i hate the things). other than that - days 2-5 were broth, water, Jello and protein. days 6 and 7 i introduced cottage cheese and yogurt and iced tea. i have my post opp meeting in two days, i'll ask them then. just kinda concerned that my body is eating muscle as well as fat. any thoughts?

My stomach is starting to grumble really bad. I am kind of hungry even though I know I couldn't eat anything! My husband was eating a steak and I was pretty tempted to go and take a lick of it no really! I went to central market where they have a lot of homeade Soups and found three of them that looked good to strain. chicken noodle, tortilla and vegtable. I brought them home and put them all through the strainer, so I ended up with the broth. It was really good, but I think the vagtable might be too spicy right now. I am really confused about my "liquids" list. There is a stage one and two, but they both refer to the same list. Milk is on there (reduced fat), but I am not sure that I am supposed to have it either. That being said, I had about 1/2 cup of promise land reduced fat midnight chocolate milk. It was like heaven!!! I found these EAS carmel coffee protien shakes that have a a little bit of caffiene that has given me some energy. What did your Dr.s say about the yogurt drinks the first week? Can you tell that I am already bored with broth and fruit punch gatorade? I took no pain meds last night or today. My port area gave me a little problem shen I rolled over a few times, but besides that I seem to be doing pretty well. Some of my belly swelling has gone down - only look about 6 months pregnant right now. My husband and I went to the Farmers Market yesterday - I was over lloking at something and he caught a glimpse of me - standing with my big swollen belly sticking out holding my back with one hand and my port site witht the other, he was cracking up - He said "your right, you do actually look pretty pregnant, take care of our little gas baby in there" HAHA!! I totally avioded a lady that obviously was pregnant, afraid she was going to come up to me and ask me when I was due How are you guys doing??? I want a hamburger and some baked Beans
-
I have been eating yogurt, tea and taking my Vitamins. banana and one day I had a mango smoothie for lunch. I also have sugar free Jello. I cheated last night with a pretzel and lemonade. and I cheated today with almond crusted Tilapia and mashed potatoes and green Beans. this is day two for me. So tomorrow I will start fresh with a Protein Drink in the morining stick with the apple sauce and the yogurts. I have to say. I haven't had any soda or cakes and pies. So that must be a plus. So I guess my question is stick to my Protein drinks and no lean meats or starches at all?

I was so nauseated yesterday. It was by far the worse day of my recovery. I was in bed by 10pm last night, and finally today I feel good. I'm so tired of taking Phenergan, but the antibiotics make me so sick, even when I eat something. I broke down and ate some greek yogurt today because my stomach just needed it. I just have a few more days on antibiotics, and hope I can make it through. I'm sick of being sick.
