    Still a slow loser

90lbs is a huge amount of weight to lose! Many people who drop massive amounts in a short time are very obese. I’m not sure where you started out at, but your initial weight may be a contributing factor. Someone who is much bigger than you and sedentary that went from that to being more active is probably going to lose more in the short term. Is 800 calories what your doctor wanted you at for this time frame? It seems a bit low. I know I start to stall if I’m not eating enough and being physically active. Some days I have to force myself to eat 1000 calories, but in the long run I know I have better results and lose more.

I almost gave in to the arches….

I don't know that that ever completely goes away. I largely avoided fast food when I was in weight loss phase, although on road trips I'd sometimes have Wendy's chili - or Panera's turkey chili or some of their soups. In maintenance, I still do the chili - and/or sometimes a half salad at Panera. At McDonald's (which is rare - and only on road trips) I'll get an Egg McMuffin since they have them available all day now. They're 300 calories and have lots of protein, so they're fine for a maintenance program. I can't do fries or fatty things - and I haven't eaten ground beef in probably 20 years. Highly fatty meals don't sit well with me AT ALL. I could probably handle a grilled chicken sandwich - or half a one, anyway.

    Still a slow loser

there are so many factors that influence people's rate of weight loss that they have little to no control over (e.g., age, gender, genetics, metabolic rate, starting BMI, etc). The two factors that you DO have a lot of control over are your activity level and how closely you stick to your food plan. If you do well with those two, you WILL lose the weight, whether fast or slow. I was a slow loser. I was reminded of that by a very insensitive resident who was doing the follow-ups at my clinic one day - he said I was behind the rest of my co-hort. Well, I was super committed and almost never went off plan that first year, and I ended up losing every molecule of my excess weight, over 200 lbs (took me 20 months). So I pretty much blew everyone else in my "co-hort" out of the water. And I know I am not alone. my point is, us slow losers can also be very successful. In the end, your success is due how committed you are - NOT your rate of weight loss.
  4. people "gain" weight from the IV fluids they give you in the hospital. Some of us "gain" as much as 10 lbs from them. It can take a few days for them to work their way out of your system, so if the weight is bothering you, stay off the scale for a few days. I don't think I weighed myself at all that early out - I waited until my two-week follow-up appointment. Updated to add that Hopscotch is right - in addition to the IV fluid, you lost a lot pre-surgery, so you won't lose as much right after surgery as someone who didn't have a pre-surgery loss.
  5. it's so weird for me to hear conversations now about people's weight since I rarely heard those when I was morbidly obese. Now, people don't know my past, so...I occasionally hear unkind remarks. I don't know how to handle those, honestly. I've just been ignoring them, but I'm not sure that's the right "response".

    Still a slow loser

First of all... YOU LOST 90 POUNDS! That's amazing! Anybody would consider that a fantastic accomplishment, so celebrate that! Secondly, you don't show your starting weight or current weight on your stats, but if you started with a lower BMI -- say, around 40 -- you're not going to lose as quickly as someone with a really high BMI (I started with a BMI over 60!). And the closer you get to a normal BMI, the more your weight loss will slow down. Finally, there are a lot of factors that can affect your rate of weight loss, some of which are completely beyond your control, so just because you're not losing as quickly as you'd like doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong or need to change anything, or that you won't get there eventually. I initially felt like I was losing slowly because I was comparing myself to other people, but looking back, I'm amazed by how much weight I lost in less than a year. We're all in a hurry to lose that weight, but once you get to your goal, it doesn't really matter how long it took to get there. Plus, some people say that losing slowly results in less loose skin, so it could actually be a benefit.
  7. I’m going through a divorce. As part of dealing with it all I took a short term contract as a travel nurse for the summer in Boston (Seattle is home). I felt like getting away from the situation and having time & space to clear my head would be the best thing for me. As such, no one here knows I used to weigh nearly 300lbs. A couple nurses and I were at the desk one night shift and one was talking about her patient, whose stats are just about where I was before starting this process. The nurse said something along the lines of “I wonder why she doesn’t look in to one of those surgeries”. The other nurse loudly scoffed and said “Then we’ll just see her in here for problems due to alcohol or drug addiction instead of food addiction”. It was said loudly, unkindly, and with clear bias. I was stunned and walked away. Of course she has no idea of my past. On my way home I thought of so many things I should have/could have said to that nurse to advocate and stand up for that patient, but was caught up in my own feelings of shame about my past weight problem. Ugh. Just when I think I’m doing really well and moving past that, I’m reminded of all the struggles and stigma there is about being overweight.
  8. There's a reason many surgeons say don't weigh for a few weeks following surgery. Our bodies are inflammed, swollen and possibly still some fluid retention. Also if you lost a lot of weight in the couple of week pre-surgery this often results in a lower loss in the first week or two following surgery. As long as you are getting sufficient fluids and meeting your food requirements the scales will reflect your efforts soon.
  9. Hi, I'm a Newby just found the forum, I'm so shocked. I had my gastric bypass last Wednesday and have only lost 2lb. I'm currently 262lb. I lost quite a bit on the pre opp diet went from 281 to 264. (In 2 weeks). So was surprised at the low weight loss this week. I've been really good with my protein and haven't had over 800 calories a day. I just don't understand it. Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk

    Still a slow loser

There are a few maxims you can depend upon on this journey. There’s no right or wrong rate of weight loss. Some people are fast losers & some are slow losers. The more you have to lose the faster you’ll lose at the beginning. Muscle weighs more than fat. The closer to goal, the slower you’ll lose. You may stall multiple times as you’re losing. It’s not a race. I lost 31kg in 6 months - that’s 68lbs - sound familiar. And I wouldn’t be considered a slow loser. Of course, I don’t know where you started but I think you need to reassess how well you’re really doing. You are doing the right things. It will happen. Remember, every pound you lose is a win. Celebrate each one’s passing.

    Still a slow loser

So, at 6 months out. I have lost 67 pounds and then 23 t before. So I am at 90lbs down. I have been avoiding here because I feel like I see so many people lose that in 3 months. I swim 4 times a week. My doctor says because I am muscular, that is why I don’t lose as quickly. I’m putting on muscle as I work out but I just don’t see the scale move. Sometimes, it just feels like I’ll never get there. I was stalled for 2.5 weeks. Now I am back down to losing but seemingly taking forever to break into the next weight bracket. Is anyone else a slow loser? I honestly hate it but don’t know how to speed it up. I get around 800 calories a day, I get my Protein, I don’t cheat, I get Water and Vitamins, and swim 4 times a week, like I said. I just don’t get why my body is so stubborn and holds on. Feeling kind of sad about it all.

    Too much weight lost

I agree with @kristieshannonsuggestion of contacting your dietician to develop a healthy eating plan. How many calories a day are you eating? What’s your activity like? How tall are you? What body type are you? I have a smaller frame, am 5’3” tall, not overly active & weigh about 106lbs. I’m happy with my weight & how my body looks. I’m slim but not bony (can feel my bones but they don’t protrude). But that’s me. We’re all different & we have to find the weight we feel happy at. To maintain my weight I added additional whole & multi grain carbs like @Jaelzion & more fruit & vegetables. (I would have added seeds & nuts but they make me windy 😁.) I eat three meals a day & snack 4 or 5 times. This allowed me to increase my calories to a point I maintain while still ensuring all I eat has nutritional value. I still takes ages to eat but it does allow me to eat a slightly larger portion size (3-4oz protein & more vegetables) & therefore a few more calories.

    Awful smelling stool and gas

I am having theee WORST smelling gas and poops since having DS surgery. Does this ever subside!? It’s terrible. I don’t want to be in social situations, or at my cubicle in the office building where I work. I just don’t know what to do. My hubby thought it was hysterical at first and now he is grossed out. I can’t deal with it anymore! I don’t know exactly what sets it off but when it’s bad, it’s really really bad and when it’s not as bad, the smell is still outright putrid. It lingers forever and no spray will help. I wish someone would’ve warned me about this. I literally had no clue. I had DS surgery as a revision to GSV because I gained most of the weight back. I am 4 months post DS and 52 lbs down but I’m afraid to be around anyone. It’s embarrassing! I’ve tried a pill called Devrom I read about Amazon that’s supposed to be an internal “deodorizer” but it didn’t work. I’ve tried charcoal pills to control the gas…still no relief. Anyone have any other advice? Anyone else experiencing this? I literally have to isolate myself and after a year of Covid where I was basically quarantining, I’m tired of being alone in a room!! Help please?!

5 weeks post-op slow weight loss

Same with me! I have been small my whole life. Around 125 to 140 in that range up and down. I would usually gain a lot of weight with each child and then I would lose it pretty easily with some effort of course. Well, I had a hysterectomy and ever since then I gained over 100 pounds! I tried everything to get it off and it did not work. This time the Weight would not budge no matter what I did.So when I heard about surgery I was so excited! I started at 256. I am five weeks out now I am 227 I have only lost 20 pounds in a little over a month. It makes me sad because I have been doing everything right. I lost about 10 pounds on the liquid diet before surgery but since surgery only about 20 pounds. I have been stalled since the second week. I sure hope it gets better because this is depressing.

VET Looking for Buddies and Pen Pals!

I'm the old lady of the group. I had roux n y long limb bypass in 1997. My original weight was 306 and my lowest weight has been 136. I have regained and lost many times in the years that followed. I currently weigh 159 and my goal is 150..I find I lose weight quickly if I follow the surgeons diet guidelines. Twice I have gained to over 200 pounds and had to put the work in to lose it. I get lazy and decide to eat what I want with the exception of high fat and high sugar foods which gives me dumping syndrome. My first suggestion is too start with seeking your physician's advice. They are the experts. I understand what you mean about support. Only my children and siblings know that I ever had the surgery so it's difficult to really get support and understanding. Most people think the surgery is the easy way out because they just don't know how hard it is. Every support group I've even participated in have been more geared to people and immediate post op support. I definitely understand how gut wrenching the regain is especially when the surgery is so hard in the first place. I'm very open to share my experience and current struggles with you. We seem to be in the same mind space. Good fortune. To you.

    Dave is one month post-surgery

No I didn’t log anything. I tried it for half a day but I’m not disciplined enough to do anything like that reliably enough. I just kept mental notes and tbh it was really easy when it was two shakes and a cucumber all day. My estimates now are just that but I’m dialing into maintenance fairly easily. I no longer rely on my daily weight as I gain a tiny amount each day until I have my laxative around once a week and use my weight after that’s all settled out to compare. I’m losing about .3lbs a week right now which I’m ok with, it’s better than regain but I want to be careful. I told my half of my family. My wife really doesn’t want her side to know so it’s not out there in the public domain so to speak. I honestly don’t care who knows but am respecting her wishes (she had the procedure too so it’s not just about me). As far as the fat roll I don’t know. I was pretty barrel shaped, skinny legs and arms but not really a roll, just a thick torso. I will say that I was constantly amazed at how much better I thought I looked in the moment, but looking back through those in-progress photos now…. eehhh now it doesn’t look so great. It’s all about perspective I guess. If I stopped losing at 240 (my initial “realistic goal”) I would be saying the same thing, and if I get down to 180 (don’t want to) I’ll probably think I’m too doughy now. I guess I’m just always happy in the now. But I am happy. I said in my one year update that I feel like THIS is the me that I always knew existed.

Post Op Liquid Diet - Juice Ok?

If they are not on the suggested/approved list of drinks you can have I would give them a miss particularly in the early stages of post op/weight loss. You could always give the nutritionist a call or send an email to ask though. Juices have most of the fibre removed and there a lot of concentrated fruit sugars...makes for a high calorie drink without any protein. Maybe if they were more veggie based as opposed to fruit based there would be less concentrated fruit sugars. As I said, best to check with your nutritionist for now.
  18. I just went out to get my hair cut and my nails done and was feeling all good and on my way home. The angel and the devil were on my shoulders and the devil had me convinced that I could eat just a few French fries and it wouldn’t be too bad cause the portion would be small. Well thankfully they were busy because before I could get up to order the angel voice kicked in and reminded me that it was this way of thinking that sabotaged every diet I have been on up till now and I pulled through without ordering. I am curious though. Am I the only one that’s come this close? Is this an ongoing battle for others that are still In weight loss phase? What about those in maintenance. Part of me is just sharing to help keep myself accountable but part of me wonders if others have almost given in as well.

    June Surgeries

Hello, baripals! I'm a 56-year-old woman with a BMI of 50 & I'm having my RNY gastric bypass tomorrow, JUNE 30TH. Eek! I am so, SO excited. I'm 5'4" & currently weigh 275.5lbs but my start weight before the pre-op liquid diet was 290lbs. While I have severe sleep apnea & a family history of ovarian cancer, I do not have high blood pressure nor diabetes. My only medication is for recurring major episodes of depression & dysthymia following a childhood & adolescence of psychological & sexual abuse. I have always used food to stuff down negative emotions & stresses & have been learning, through therapy, to find other means to express myself & vent my feelings. I'm really looking forward to changing my lifestyle & getting fit & healthy for myself & my family (hubby & two sons, 21 & 19, & future daughter-in-law, 21). If you'd like to connect with me (& I'd certainly like that), you can find all of my socials pinned in the banner of my YouTube channel & find my email on the channel's About page. I wish everyone success with their surgeries & new lives. Blessings to you all for great health & happiness!

    Too much weight lost

I dropped down to 118 at one point, which was too thin for my comfort. I added more fat and carbs and that took care of itself! I still didn't eat junk food, my extra fat/carbs was in the form of granola, sweet potatoes, nuts, avocado, etc. I've always been very carb-sensitive, so reducing or adding carbs works really well to throttle my weight loss up or down.

    June 2021- calling all Vets!

I am also 7 years out from my VSG. I had some significant regain for a couple of years but have since turned it around and am currently a couple of pounds from my lowest weight. Even with the weight regain, I am grateful for my surgery since most of my health issues have resolved or improved. I am also finding it easier to lose weight since I still have less stomach capacity and reduced appetite.

    Too much weight lost

If you feel skeletal, perhaps you need to build up muscle? I don’t know your height or body type but maybe you lost too much muscle during your weight loss. Talk to your doctor of course, but I don’t think it’s usually a good idea to put on fat purposely. I did that when people told me I was too thin (at 104 lbs) and proceeded to gain 60 pounds! I’m currently back to 104 and my bones are too prominent for my taste but this time I will either get used to it or build up muscle to improve my figure.
  25. I had my gastric sleeve 8/2011. I began at 290 lbs. I have hit my plateau at 180 pds but then began losing again. I am now down to 129 lbs. I feel as if I have lost too much weight. I am eating all day as of yesterday. I take Periactin, a appetite increasing pill. I am drinking ensure and protein shakes also. Has this happened to anyone else? I have had to have iron transfusions due to anemia and malabsorption. I am at a loss for ideas on what I can do to gain weight. I feel like a skeleton.
