    Sipping Water

I had DS. I’m 11 days post op. the first two days I was throwing up old blood, which is normal. I had the nurses give me those chuck bags to throw up in. I didn’t really “drink”. I ate ice cubes, slept at a recline on a couch (legs propped up), walked around my hotel room, used the bathroom a lot, and just slept! Take your nausea meds and pain killer. It helps! Try to stay positive and think about how healthy you’re becoming or what you want to do when you lose x amount of weight. On day 3 of post op, my dr prescheduled 2 IV bags. They were very helpful! That night I was able to sip 2 oz of broth or soup an hour and have an ice cube. Now I can drink about 10 Oz of bone broth in an hour or two. I recommend getting Swanson bone broth sipping cups. So yummy after all the sweets drinks. I dislike all these protein drinks and my stomach gets so bloated from them. So I mix a scoop of unflavored whey protein in my Greek yogurts. I’m still struggling to get the recommended amount of protein and water in. But I feel better now that I’m getting at least 40 Oz of water plus some liquid foods. I walk about 2 miles a day. Sometimes one mile in the AM and a mile in the PM. I always sip water, and I mean tiny sips, thru my walks. One thing I highly wish my DR told me was to use benefiber or miralax pre op and post op. I was constipated these last few weeks! Im talking pebbles type of BM after 2 WLS of nothing. Ive been mixing miralax in my morning tea and used fleet suppositories and that has been helping me finally. But goodness, I wish I was on benefiber preop. Also, I’ve taken gas-x three times since surgery and it has helped! Hallelujah! I hope you feel better quickly!

How much more are you planning to lose??

There’s a world of difference between supportive comments & intrusive or critical ones. I’ve never quite understood how some people think it’s ok to comment on your weight & tell you what they think you should weigh or should do. And do you find they tend to do it when there’s an audience? 🤷🏻‍♀️ The reverse was, I also was a little bemused by people who didn’t comment at all. I mean I was almost half the size I had been. But then I realised they were the ones who felt my weight was a personal thing & it wasn’t their place to comment or they saw me for who I was not what I weighed. Consequently I began to respect those people more. After my weight settled, I noticed those ‘well meaning’ acquaintances who repeatedly told me I was too thin weren’t saying anything at all. I think it just took them time to readjust how they saw me. Hopefully this will happen for you too. PS - love a bit of sarcastic humour: lighter than air, baby weight. 😂😂😂 That should have made them rethink their desire to comment.

How much more are you planning to lose??

I think sometimes it makes other people insecure about their own weight when someone near them loses. Sort of this realization....omg, she's lost weight. Am I the fattest person in the room now? omg...she's nearly my size...and she looks really good....does she look better than me? I think this is particularly true among younger single people, but it can also be an issue with middle aged farts and beyond. No feeling worse...than when your friend has been feeling insecure about her weight/wrinkles/hairloss/age related woes/etc.....and her freaking husband notices you've lost weight. Ugh. "Damn, your friend looks good!" He doesn't mean to be an asshat...but it's a knife in both of your hearts and you just feel rotten about it.

    Periods and bleeding

Yep, as others have said totally normal. I have an iud and prior to surgery I never had a period. It came back sporadically during weight loss initially- seems to be leveling off and hopefully going away again. Just another one of the joys of womanhood I guess.

How much more are you planning to lose??

I made a joke to my husband a few weeks ago that I wanted one work day where nobody make a comment about my body or weight. Still waiting on that day! I know it’s short term so I’m happy that this is just the current stage. Still annoying in the moment though. Part of this is just my circumstance as well- I’ve worked at my current job for almost 15 years, and I’m in a very visible position so like 350 people who work in the same facility as me know me personally. That’s a lot of people to have make the same comment over and over again.

    Plus sized spray tan???

I had a malignant melanoma about five years ago so I am not supposed to go into the sun anymore which when I was heavier I always wore long pants so it didn’t much matter that I was ghostly. As I am losing weight I am starting to wear shorts and my pasty white legs are hard to miss in south FLORIDA where everyone else is golden bronze. I am starting to look into spray tanning but I am just wondering if there are any things to consider or tips and tricks to doing this with a plus sized body? The salon near me has mystic tan booth if that makes a difference. I am pretty sure my larger bust is going to be my biggest challenge but are there others??

What to expect at surgeon appointment?

They way mine was set up was 6 months with my first visit being with the surgeon to discuss everything and then everything in between. I saw the surgeon or his NP at every visit for the next 6 months. In between I saw the dietitian, a cardiologist (with additional testing that I now see every 6 months for a congenital heart defect I never knew about!), a pulmonologist (with additional testing and eventual clearance), a physical therapist (for clearance), a psychologist (for clearance), and had to attend at least one support group meeting before being cleared for surgery. At my initial appointment with my surgeon we went over diet history, the kinds of surgery and which one I’d prefer and what he suggested, my weight and health history, and any questions I may have.

How much more are you planning to lose??

I've been thinking about this a lot and I just started my weight loss less than a month ago. I have come to the conclusion that I will answer unwanted weight questions with another question to put the onus back on the person and hopefully make them realize that they are asking an intrusive question. So, if anyone (who is not closely acquainted to me) asks....'How much more weight you going to lose?' or 'How much have you lost?' I will respond with a very serious 'Why do you ask?' because my weight is no one else's business.... and no one has the right to comment on my body anymore.

How much more are you planning to lose??

it's annoying, but it eventually ends. Pretty much everyone now has either already seen me at a normal weight or else never knew me when I was obese.
  11. My appointment with the surgeon himself, we just went over the surgery. He mentioned which type he'd recommend given my weight and co-morbidities. Then he went over what the surgery itself involved and asked if I had any other questions. Was very short and to the point. Now, that same day I also spoke with a nurse and dietician. The nurse asked some more probing questions about my acid reflux and ended up ordering an endoscopy since I was self-pay (and therefore couldn't afford revision if I got sleeve and it made things worse). We also went over pre and post-op expectations, as well as what to expect during the hospital stay.
  12. Ugh it’s terrible isn’t it. I still haven’t lost weight and I’m approaching 3 weeks but hopefully we’ll see something soon!

How much more are you planning to lose??

Ok I know I’m being petty but I’m feeling petty today so here goes. So far I’ve lost 150 lbs and I’ve decided this is how the comments from coworkers/acquaintances goes: 1-50 lbs: nothing 50-100 lbs: have you lost weight? Keep it up! 100-125 lbs: wow you are looking great what’s your secret? 125+ lbs: said in a disbelieving voice “how much more weight are you planning to lose? Aren’t you done yet? I know that this is a problem that is great to have in the sense that a year ago I would have given anything to be this weight so please don’t take it that I’m not happy about losing or that I feel like people shouldn’t comment. But I’m still overweight, and regardless of if I was a normal weight or overweight or heck if I was obese I am getting tired of people making comments like I don’t have the autonomy to determine my own goal weight. And realistically it’s been so long since I was a normal size I honestly have no idea what my true goal would be because I will know it when I get there (hopefully!) I tend to make a lot of jokes so I’ve just started saying really implausible amounts (I want to lose 200 lbs more and be lighter than air, I want to hit my birth weight of 9 lbs again and get back into my going home from the hospital outfit, etc) but in my head all I can think of is please stop commenting on my body for five minutes thanks. anyway this is a first world problem I am well aware, and I know I’m just being salty but here I am.
  14. I am in the same boat. Almost 3 weeks out and have been stuck at the same weight for 10 days.
  15. I went on a long vacation around 4 months post op. It wasn’t too early (for me). I had absolutely no problem finding food and drinks at local markets. There were plenty of protein options, but I wasn’t in Japan. I would expect most of the protein from eggs, fish and tofu. By that time I had a lot of extra energy I was walking for exercise, the burden of excess weight was being removed and I looked better than ever. All of those things increased my excitement towards the trip. However, if you experience any major complications after surgery (not that you will, most people don’t) then reschedule when you feel better.

What to expect at surgeon appointment?

Impossible to say. They're all different. They might measure you, take pix, weight. They will talk about your history with diets. They will talk about your comorbidities. They will talk about your surgical options. They will all have a different list of what they require. The good ones will require you see a therapist, a dietician, and attend a support group meeting. They will offer access to things like exercise classes and healthy cooking classes geared to bariatric patients. You'll likely need a lot of medical tests. Blood panel, upper GI, chest xrays, ekg, presurgical stuff. Typically, you get a date after you do all or most of your prereqs. Wishing you the best.

    eating more, feeling hungry

When you say that you don't have period anymore, what do you mean? Are you truly postmenopausal? (have not had a period in over a year) Average age of true menopause is about 51 (in the US, at least). I'm 49 and I'm all over the place skipping periods, then starting up again with a vengeance. This perimenopause thing is the pits. LOL. I absolutely get crazy hungry and crave everything right before my period is due. And my weight will often tick up 3 pounds and make me nervous. But it'll come right down after I get my period because, weirdly, when I have my period my appetite plummets. Evolutionary biologists believe this whole phenominon of binging before menstruating might have been a defense mechanism against predators smelling blood. Menstrual apes will stick around home and roam less, eat less....and will eat a lot beforehand so they don't have to forage as much. Keeps them downwind of the cheetahs maybe? Heck if I know, but it's an interesting theory as to why we get the muchies. Keep in mind that estrogen is stored in fat...and a big weight loss will cause elevation in estrogen. So, the weight loss itself could be causing hormonal symptoms like you're describing. You might not need HRT, but it's not a bad idea to see what your doctor recommends. But yep...you're not the only one who is a bottomless pit right before menstruation. (or what your body percieves is going to be menstruation) Best wishes!

Struggling with out of control eating

I totally agree with creekimp. You're at the point where a lot of people start backsliding and need extra support. The first few months or the first year most of us are pretty gungho about all this, but once we're in maintenance or at least close to it, the rapid weight loss ends, we're tired, and the thrill of rapid weight loss is gone. That's when the hard work begins - to either keep going or stay where we're at without starting to head backwards. Lots of us have found therapists to be very helpful. Find one if you need to....you've put a lot into this and don't want to go back to where you were before!!

    Period changes after vsg

yes. Lots of women report mood swings and screwed-up menstrual cycles the first few weeks (or months) after surgery. It eventually settles down and stabilizes. It's supposedly due to excess estrogen being released. Estrogen is stored in fat cells, and it's released during rapid weight loss. As I said, it'll eventually stabilize and go back to normal - but it takes a few weeks (or months)
  20. So hard to decide! Just want to add that there is a small chance of complications, too. I had nausea and vomiting for weeks which prevented me from eating and drinking like I should have been. I wasn’t able to work for 8 weeks. Hopefully you will have an easier time, but teaching is demanding, so give yourself plenty of time to recover, gain back your stamina, and get accustomed to new ways of eating and taking supplements. GL!

    Honeymoon Period

I think it depends on how far out from your original surgery you had your revision. For me, my revision was 8 months after my sleeve due to GERD that was causing intractable hiccups. Because I was still in the weight loss phase I continued to lose pretty steadily until the end of February this year (14 months from my sleeve surgery) when I hit 155lbs which is where I’m maintaining now.
  22. Like a lot of you said, week 2 the weight has slowed down. I’m down a total of 12.5lbs in 10 days. Day 9 and 10 so far have been the hardest. I’ve kept to my plan 100% and yesterday and today I’ve had a massive headache, have been shaky and my tummy is painful. Been drinking tons of water. Hoping the next 4 days fly by cause this sucks! 😂

    Honeymoon Period

I was revised in February and so far I've lost 28 pounds. I would like to lose another 20-25. The weight, though not flying off, is pretty steady at coming off in ounces. I stall every now and again but it lasts maybe a week. I initially didn't like the RNY but I really appreciate it now. I definitely have restriction and it is very easy to not go overboard otherwise I'll be in agony and I'm against that! I am in a caloric deficit for sure but I'm wondering if my body will get used to the tiny amount I'm taking in and just stop losing.

    Periods and bleeding

I had my heavy period a week before surgery. Then again three days post op. It was a full heavy period, which surprised me. However, I hope it'll regulate in a few months. When I lose weight I expect to be a little off. Plus with a major surgery, it will take time to balance out.

Nutritionist was NO help at all

Yes she is not listening to you, I would try to get another one. I don’t think mine is terribly bright either, but it also their education and training is out of date. I do think you need to follow the guidelines as far as water goes. The #1 cause of re-hospitalization is dehydration. Maybe you could just drink an ounce of liquid every 10 minutes and that will help you tolerate it better. I wouldn’t worry about loosing to much weight, it’s normal, it’s also normal that you will gain some back after a year or two, so just let it happen. As far as dairy goes our bodies don’t really need dairy, but you do need the protein it provides. Have you tried ISOPURE PROTEIN POWDER (0 carbs)? You can put it on or in anything, one scoop is 29 grams of protein, you can spread out through the day. Even if you just sprinkle some on whatever your eating will give you extra protein. I have problems with constipation too and it is perfectly safe to put MiraLAX in some water everyday which will eventually keep things moving.
