    Resleeve

I had been obsessively looking into being resleeved as well as mine is very large and misshapen as evident in my x-rays, I've now decided to revise to the MGB, I've done a ton of research and while I NEVER imagined even considering a malabsorption procedure, it really sounds very promising. There is a small group on here if you would like more information. However, if you are dead set of resleeving, IMHO, Dr. Wilhelmy in Mexico was by far the best I found for the job. Best of luck to you!
  2. This is a quote from the MGB forum that someone was nice enough to share with me. She said her doc talked her into the MGB and these are the reasons that he gave her ... I thought that because a restriction only procedure had worked so well for me before it would again. His points were. 1) if you have a band your stomach will be damaged so they would have to make the pouch slightly larger because of scar tissue therefore you will probably be able to eat more 2) your body is not shocked by just going on a low cal diet again, it's used to it 3) it's reversible 4) they don't bypas as much of the intestines so malabsorption is not as high (this was my main reason I didn't want it) 4) usually a couple of good Multivitamins a day is all the supplements you need, with traditional rny it's more 5) probably won't suffer with as many extreme reactions to sugar/ fat as rny. 6) if you have a bypas then you have no where else to go, no more surgery, if you have a sleeve and it doenst work you will need to revise again anyway (especially relevant if you are self pay like me!) It was this post that really led me to researching the procedure. I'm not saying you might not do amazing with a sleeve, I just wish that I had someone to tell me both sides of it before I made my decision. Best of luck!!
  3. I too was banded and very successful but ended up with a dilated esophagus. I revised to the sleeve and while yes, it's nice to not feel stuck or PB any more of have that terrible pain after eating (I kept my band very tight) I've gained 10 lbs since my surgery. I'm constantly hungry and I can eat very large portions. Removing the band was like opening a flood gate for me and my "sleeve" is bigger and easily stretched due to the scar tissue that was left behind. I have x-rays to show how misshapen it is. I'm not pursuing a revision to the MGB, I wish I had never sleeved at all to be honest and I wouldn't be facing a 3rd surgery. In my research I've found those who did well with the band struggle more with the sleeve while those who were unable to lose with the band do pretty good. I NEVER imagined I would consider a malabsorption procedure but after reading about the long term success of the MGB, I'm sold.

    Help please :(

Do you know, did they revise your sleeve as well? Or just do the bypass portion and leave the sleeve as it was?
  5. I am relatively new here. Sorry that this is so long. I am starting the process of revision. I met with my surgeon who is great and told him that I wanted the band removed and probably convert to sleeve. I was extremely successful with the band and lost 100% of my excess body weight about 8 years ago and maintained for 3 years. I had two babies and due to severe morning sickness had to take 1/2 the Fluid out my band for each. For the first pregnancy I gained a ton of weight (70lbs) but lost all of it but 20lbs within a year before I got pregnant again. After the second baby (3 years ago) I have not been able to lose weight at all. I am now almost up to my pre-surgery weight. I have been struggling with the past 2 years with fills - my upper GI showed mild enlarged esophagus which returned to normal when fill was removed. Bottom line I realize now that the only way that the band worked for me so well was when it was extremely tight and it controlled my hunger. I don't think that this was o healthily and I don't think I can do this anymore without irritating and enlarging my esophagus. I prefer the sleeve over the bypass because I think restriction works well for me. I asked my surgeon about the esophagus problem and he said that it was being caused by the band and should not be a problem with the sleeve since my enlargement is very mild. I had an endoscopy and the GI doctor said the same thing - that I am in good shape and there is no reason for me not to have the surgery. Can someone explain to me why you do not get an enlarged esophagus with the sleeve? I do not understand the mechanics and I don't have another appointment with the surgeon for a month. Also can someone explain what it feels like to be full with the sleeve? With the band I got a painful feeling. When my esophagus was enlarging I was able to eat a lot and it sort of felt like it was in my throat. Does this happen with the sleeve? I am worried that I am "used" to the feeling of food in my throat and the sleeve will not work for me. I am probably being neurotic here! I want to state also that I completely trust my surgeon and he is world renowned at a top teaching hospital in NY. I just want to understand how this works! The surgeon said the sleeve is the way to go for me over the bypass. Thanks!

  7. I find this topic so interesting because a few years ago I was wanting to revise but keep my band because I felt I needed it to keep on track, like I'd need it to maintain the weight loss. I couldn't find anything about it, and even the surgeon's PA couldn't even answer. Then I wound up having so many problems with my band that I can't wait to get it out. I've regained all but about five pounds and just this morning got my surgery date for revision. I'm very excited about what's to come, but also very nervous, not just about the surgery but about maintaining. I'm so scared that I'll fail....again!! My surgeon assures me the band failed and my body found a way around it....sure hoping this body can't outsmart the bypass.

what's the longest with the band

I know this is an old thread but thought maybe people are still interested. I was interested enough to click on it. I'm at 8 years, 2 months. I lost 15 pounds below goal weight in 14 months and maintained for several years. I eventually gained back 50 pounds. Then I lost 45 pounds and now I've gained back 20. I'm in process to get the band removed and a revision to gastric sleeve. My band is too tight even when unfilled. Most foods won't go through even after sitting in the pouch for hours. I was able to gain weight because I found certain, unhealthy foods (cheetos, cookies) would pass through. Thus the revision. My diet has been horrible since banding because even Water won't go through a lot of the time. The sleeve will let me eat a variety of healthy foods.
  9. Hi all, I've been a long time lurker of this site but haven't posted in years (or ever!). I live in Melbourne, Doncaster to be precise and I had lap band surgery in 2006. It was revised due to a slip in 2008, then revised again in August last year for the same reason. The revision band ended up getting infected and two weeks after the surgery I was hospitalised for 9 days and on IV antibiotics. I came out of hospital but went back in again 10 days later and in October had to have the band removed as the infection had returned. I'm now looking at other options and I've researched and discussed with my surgeon and a new surgeon who he referred me to, about the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. Bypass is looking like the best option for me as I will have a lot of scar tissue from having 3 X bands and 1 X infection so the risk of leaks with the sleeve are quite high in my case. I am seeing Mr Paul Burton who operates at the Alfred hospital, has anyone here been a patient of his before? I'd love to hear your experience if you've been a patient of his, or if you've had a similar background to mine with multiple lap bands then revised to a bypass. I'd love to stick around and be part of this group as I navigate my way through my next surgery and hopefully new and improved health!
  10. Getting nervous about my band to sleeve revision. I only lost about 45-50lbs with my lap band and I am extremely worried that I will fail with the sleeve as well. Has anyone had a similar situation? ????
  11. I'm still getting anxiety about eating with the sleeve. Sometimes at work after lunch I get a stomach ache after. I'm scared to go to a restaurant. I have a dinner to attend in May and I'm nervous. I was revised on 2/4. I want to get past this so I can start going out again
  12. I had my initial nutrition consultation with my surgeon's nurse and coordinator today, and she thinks that my insurance SHOULD approve me for a revision/conversion from lap-band to RNY with only a letter of medical necessity from my PCP, a psych eval, and the nutrition consult, instead of having to jump through all the hoops again for approval. Now whether the insurance will agree with her, we'll just have to wait and see, lol. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. If everything gets approved, hopefully I'll be having surgery around the beginning of June. If not, it could be several more months, since I'd have to do 90 days of dietitian appointments. So now, I've got my psych eval on Saturday, and I've got to continue nagging my new PCP to cough up the letter. Hopefully, we can get everything submitted around the beginning of next week, and then it's just a matter of waiting.

"picky eaters" - my pet peeve

What is interesting to me about your remark is comparing the "culture" of those two different forums. I too started out on the other but as you know rarely post there anymore. At some point, a few months post op, i realized that there were more people here that were inspiring to me... I chose a strategy to pick a handful of people who were "similiar" to me - revised from band, lots of weight to lose - and were successful. I focused on listening to THEM. i found the other forum friendlier at times but not as inspiring or useful. Now, since I am not known there very well, when I do drop in I have a high probability of ticking someone off or tangling with a certain guy which i find fascinating. It is like the "culture" is just enough different that I manage to rub people wrong pretty predictably. I do understand why vets don't hang around. There are several who are a year or two further out than me who are in somewhat contact, but really don't want to read posts about the 3 week stall anymore. somewhere along the line, the tipping point is reached and they just stop altogether.
  14. I had a revision from lapband to sleeve. The pain was less for me believe it or not on this one. The only difference really is they are cutting scar tissue from the band that it left. And maybe adjusting stuff where band was. I had my surgery in mexico and I was walking 30mins after I came out of recovery. Exspect gas pain. Sucks

    Tomorrow!

Thanks msspicey for the kind thoughts! Well one week ago today, i was about to be taken in to the OR. The week had many ups and downs, but mainly ups. The first 2 days were really hard. I'm a revision patient so the pain was much worse this time for me than with the band. When you hear "a little better each day", believe that. Had to sty 2 nights and have a drain, again because of the revision. Today I start blenderized food, all liquids prior. Also need to start the 30/60 rule as well. Just wanted to update. I see my surgeon on Thursday and decided not to weigh myself till then. All in all, going very well....
  16. I had the same regurgitation issues you mentioned. I got my band in 2010 and was revised to sleeve this past October. The sleeve has been a breeze. I really enjoy not having that port. As for insurance, my revision was covered due to the acid reflux problems without meeting BMI requirements. Each insurance is different though. I do not regret my decision at all. I liked my band, but had extreme anxiety about eating around others for fear of getting stuck. The sleeve has opened a new world.

Band to sleeve in one procedure

I was banded in 2010. Was revised to sleeve in one operation in October. The surgery took at bit longer than a straight sleeve because of scarring, but the recovery wasn't bad at all! I love the sleeve. I feel like a normal person again!

What is Your Goal Weight at 5'5

I am 5'4 and my goal weight was 170, my surgeon said 155...i am currently 165 [with a revised goal of 160]
  19. My sleeve never worked, Iv gained almost 15 lbs since my revision a year and half ago, I have xray pics to prove my "sleeve" is large and misshapen due to the damage from my band and my surgeon using a 42 Bougie. I'm revising to MGB.

    Connecticut Sleevers?

By the way - I just revised my goal from 115 to 132. I talked to my trainer and my primary care doctor and they said I would be too thin at 115, especially since I'm exercising like crazy and am gaining a lot of muscle. 132 would put me at the very edge of normal on the BMI table. But for plastic surgery, I'm told that you only need to be a 30 BMI.
  21. That's prob a benefit for sure, I kept mine very tight right up till the day of surgery. My revision was in Ohio.
  22. I was banded in 2008. Had the revision surgery on 2/4. I had minimal scar tissue, the doc said my band had started to slip and I had a small hiatel hernia he repaired. The recovery/ healing process went very smooth and I was expecting worse since it was all done in 1 surgery but was pleasantly suprised
  23. Iv read lots of stories from others who revised from band to sleeve and did very well, I just wasn't one of them. For me after living with the band for 6 years removing it was like opening the flood gates, my hunger increased and I had very little portion restriction. I know now that my surgeon used a 42 Bougie and I had a lot of scar tissue so my "sleeve" has always been large and misshapen so since my revision Iv actually gained almost 15 lbs
  24. What was the problem with the sleeve? I am revising from band to sleeve. The band was a nightmare for me and all I have done is gain weight since I have had it done! Now I am nervous about the sleeve, since you had problems with it!
  25. Oh that's great ! It says a lot that you are returning to him, that makes me feel even better! I was banded also, I did very well until I revised to the sleeve and Iv struggled ever since, it didn't work for me at all I'm revising from sleeve to MGB.
