  1. Hi Wednesday and Sheryl, Thanks for the replies. Apologies for taking so long to answer... I am not in the habit of coming to this site much yet. Wednesday, the blockage I had may not have been a blockage at all... at least that is what I think now. I had a fill of 2ml that I had had for 5 weeks before anything happened. Then just after my period I noticed I was very restricted and I put it down to that. But the restriction didn't subside after about 5 days and my husband was getting very worried. I was only able to drink a small amount of Water each day and I could eat a little but the tenderness I felt when I drank started to get me worried too... and when the froth on my latte hurt to drink I stopped avoiding the issue and I went to the Dr... all my fill was removed and I went for a barium swallow... Luckily all was where it should be and 2 days later I had 1.7ml put back in. On my next visit my Dr thought it would be fine to go back up to 2ml but I was nervous so we agreed on 1.9ml. Then about a week or so later I got my period and pretty much exactly a month after my last drastic change in restriction it happened again! This time it was just a fraction less so seeing I was at 0.1ml less, I guess. This time I just sat with it, enjoyed the weight loss and after about a week... possibly longer, it went back to normal. Now I am almost another month on and waiting to see if it happens again! Cheers Fifi kgs: 108.5 / 86.5 / 60 lbs: 238.7 / 190 / 132

What if I lose too much weight pre-op???

The weight they have for you is the weight they submit to insurance. At least that is what happened with me. I had to be a certain weight pre op before they would do the surgery because my bmi was really high. It all depends on the requirements of your insurance.

    Walk me through this please

I'm five years out, so life is very different now than it was when I was newly post-op. I can maintain my weight now if I stay within 1500-1700 calories a day - and I exercise probably five days a week. I have tons of energy - and I haven't sipped water in quite awhile - I can drink normally. The sipping all day thing is more common in the early weeks after surgery. I'm not sure how many calories I was taking in the first few weeks after surgery - but not many. Maybe 300 or 400 (??). And yes - you do get very tired. It's the trauma from the surgery plus the limited calories that cause it, I think. I was very tired the first few weeks - and it was probably two months before I felt like my old self again. I started walking as soon as I got home from the hospital. At four weeks out, I was cleared for all exercise except for weights. And at eight weeks out, I was cleared for weights. At that time, besides walking, I did mostly yoga and water aerobics. after the first month or two, I ate 600-800 calories a day for most of that first year. After the year mark, it was more like 1000-1200. I finally stopped losing weight at about 20 months out. And as I said I earlier, I can maintain as long as I stay in the 1500-1700 range. But that varies among people - some people can eat more than that, and some less...

    Struggling

Losing only 1 pound per month is extremely slow. Have you had your thyroid checked? How many carbs are you eating? You may need to log your food and make sure that you are not eating more than 1500 calories a day. It's rough sometimes, but it gets easier the longer you do it. Try to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, if it's nothing but walking. Cardio is amazing for weight loss. Keep us updated and feel free to add anything. We want to help and we want you to succeed! <3

Stalls are a normal, natural, and necessary part of the process of losing weight. None of us lose at a constant or steady rate. Our bodies are complex systems, not simple machines. If you intend to lose a significant amount of weight, you will experience stalls. Just follow your program. Embrace the Stall http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall
  8. I`m in so much pain with the band I can`t stand it. I think it`s too tight right now so I may go in and get a slight unfill but then I`m afraid I`ll gain weight. I`ve got the slimies and the foamies and the constant pain when I eat but then sometimes I get through `the wall`and I can eat almost anything. It`s very inconsistant and it`s not even working for me right now. After initial success I haven`t lost any weight in the last couple of months despite the restriction. I`ve been reading about the sleeve and it sounds perfect. There are a couple of questions though. I read somewhere that not everyone gets to goal with the sleeve. Is that right?. (Sorry, my question mark is not working right now. Consider that big accented e my question mark.) Also, this thing about the reduced ghrelin. Isn`t ghrelin necessary for other functions in the body?. So are there disadvantages that come with a reduction in ghrelin?. Anybody know?. And price is an issue as well. If someone could tell me the price for band to sleeve revision I would appreciate it. I need to know how much I have to save up. Thanks

Also..you aren't eating great or exercising. Why would you think you should be losing weight?

    Fed up

I'm so sorry you are miserable. And periods suck! If I were you, I would stay away from the scale. Bodies do what they want, on their own schedules, and we can't really control them -- at least not in the short term. I am sure the pound you gained was water and tissue due to your period. There is no way you actually gained a pound of fat eating the way you are. That weight will come off, I promise, but I can't tell you when! So the scale is going to drive you nuts. The pre-op diet, generally speaking, is to help shrink your liver so that your surgery will be safe. It isn't to lose weight, so don't measure how "well" you are doing by the scale. How well you are doing will be assessed by your surgeon when he or she opens you up! And as long as you stay on track, I can't imagine your surgery will be canceled. Doctors understand that sometimes bodies do weird things -- especially in conjunction with hormonal changes and periods. Hang in there
  11. And what did you give you this year? And another challenge for you all- If you could give your Pre-surgery self a message , what would it be? I would tell me Surgery was not half as bad as I expected. I would say You will lose weight even if you doubt it now. And finally Frustr8 you are a strong woman, you can handle this challenge too!
  12. Hi hope you are having a great New Year's Eve. I had RnY on Dec 10th. Had surgery as much or maybe a little more because of my comorbidities. I have had exactly 3 shots of insulin since Dec 9th. I was taking 5 a day, 6 on Wednesdays. I have lost 25 pounds since I began this journey in October. Whooo whooo! I try to walk everyday. I have a brace on both legs. They don't hold me back too much. I need knee replacement surgery on the one knee. My failure to lose weight for that found me on this journey. I had started it before but lost a lot of weight just going by the diet guidelines and chickened out. So thrilled I commeted to the journey this time. I give myself health and happiness for the new year.

  14. I need help and suggestions. Next week will be 1 year post op for me. I have lost 116lbs and I am very thankful for it, but I am really struggling right now. I was playing soccer 5 nights a week and getting all my protein in and felt great. However during one of my games about 1.5 months ago I twisted my ankle so bad I chipped some bone. I had to stop soccer and working out while it healed in a boot. On top of that my parents came to stay with my husband and I and they are not concerned with healthy eating. They bought lots of junk food and while they were here we either ate out or cooked fried foods. It put in motion the hole I am trying so desperately to dig out of right now. I am getting back to working out now, but my sweet tooth is so strong right now. My question is what do many of you do to curb that craving. I can't do the sugar free stuff as the fake sugars give me migraines. I don't usually dump on sugar. I am asking this group because I know I will get honest feedback. If I tell my family I will get the typical oh no you are too smart to gain the weight back, but it is my biggest fear. This group here are the only people to truly understand the demons we are facing. Please help me.
  15. It ok to indulge every once in awhile but that everyday I was having the same problem I started eating chips and granola and my weight loss slowed to a crawl so I decided to go back to following my diet and I also cleansed my pouch by drinking liquid for 2 days and now I get in at least 100 grams of Protein and all my fluids in and increased my exercise and it's working Be careful, sugar is your trigger food you need to avoid it I'm 9 months out and down 101 pounds Good Luck Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk
  16. Hi, I was banded on April 18. I lost weight right away and have lost a total of 21 pounds. That was the first month. I have not lost any since. My usual diet for the day is breakfeast - Quest Protein bar or 2/3 c cottage cheese or a scramble egg with peppers. lunch I usually eat 3-4 ounces of turkery or chicken breast or 2/3 c cottage cheese. dinner is 3-4 ounces of protein ( pork chop, turkey burger, chicken or fish) and 1/2 c .I even weigh and measure my food.
  17. It happens all throughout the journey. Your body has to get used to the different weight changes. You will start losing again. Make sure you keep up with your caloric consumption. That helps a lot. Best wishes to you.
  18. Hi all!!! I have not been on in a few months. I will be 2 years post op on July 2nd. I was doing well there for a while up until about a month ago. I just seem that I am not motivated any more. I am starting to become addicted to food again and become an emotional eater again. I do not want that. I am trying to get my Water in but not getting as much as I should. I have become lazy. I have gained about 16 lbs. It does not seem like much but my clothes are starting to get tight on my again. Anyone have any suggestions? I belong to Kaiser Permanente now but did not have the surgery with them. Do you think that going to a support group may help me? I will never let my self get as big or even close to what I use to be. I wear a size 10-12 right now but before gaining that 16lbs I was an 8-10. Just need a little bit of encouragement or advise please. Thank you all and have a very blessed night.
  19. Don't feel like a failure! Life is a rollercoaster! I called my lapband doc right away. I was scared to death they would do a complete unfill, but he left it up to me. I decided to take out half of my fill bc my insurance at the time didn't cover my lapband appointments and I was swelling and had a hard time eating. Your doc may or may not want you to have some or all of your Fluid out, but I would hope that if you aren't having any issues then he would leave it alone. I think I was 10 or 11 weeks when I got my partial unfill. I would NOT have gotten an unfill if I could have handled it though. And good for you for wanting to go natural! I saw a midwife too, but I had to see a dr first so they could remove my 'high risk' status for having weight loss surgery. Depending on where you go, you may not have a choice, but my place was really cool about what I wanted. They did do a full nutritional panel (15 vials of blood) on that first appointment though just to make sure I wasn't deficient in any Vitamins or whatnot. I gave birth in a baby/natural friendly hospital. I think as long as you aren't deemed high risk (by the dr's office or your insurance) you should be fine. My lap band never got in the way of my pregnancy whatsoever. Congrats! Feel free to msg me for any questions
  20. I wanted to add a positive account of my 2 weeks post-op, to give pre-op folks some comfort. After minor episodes of mild incision pain and occasional bouts of nausea as my new stomach got used to digestion again over the last 2 weeks, my body is feeling almost completely normal again. I am in awe of its ability to heal itself. - My incisions are 4 very small cuts (belly-button, sternum, left and ride side of torso) which do not hurt at all anymore. I have some itching occasionally, but I understand that this signals healing. - I can drink Water in normal larger sips now (and even if I forget and take a larger gulp, there is no discomfort) - I have almost completely gone off the taste of Protein shakes (can only manage Core Power banana milkshakes even though, as one user pointed out, these are higher in carbs, so I don't drink more than 1 a day). I get most of my protein through my vegetarian puree diet (Beans, tofu, cottage cheese, (no eggs)) and through adding GENEPRO to my 3-daily cups of tea. - I feel fullness/restriction much better now that I'm on purees (compared to when I was on full liquids - I have to guess if I'd had enough Soup as that flows through rather quickly). A couple of times I've eaten my pureed dinner a bit too quickly and have felt nauseous for 15-20 minutes. That's something to remember with the VSG surgery - your body can feel so normal after a while that you 'forget' about the limitations of your new stomach. - I've lost 14 lbs since surgery and 20 lbs since my highest weight. But mentally, I want to focus on healing rather than weight loss at this stage. I know the weight loss will come - it can't not! I see and feel slight changes in my shape already. - I took 4 weeks off work (because luckily, I could) but could have easily gone back to my office job this week. - I walk 2 miles every evening and while I'm not allowed anything more strenuous for another 4 weeks, I did help pack and unpack furniture and other bits while our home was being decorated these last 2 weeks. I also flew to the Caribbean and back (for a convalescing vacation) without any issues. Take comfort from no-complication stories like mine - as miserable as you might feel a day or two after surgery, your body is designed to snap back quicker than you think.

    Help/complication after complication

Dear Anita, Boy that is bad luck. I must say having seen thousands of people with the band, this level of complication I have not seen. The weight gain you have experienced may be due to the frustration and feeling let down by the whole process. I would hope that your Dr is giving some extra TLC. Keep at it and be extra patient until the process gets started. IN the mean time gain some control back in your life by focusing on what you can have control over. I think being active does wonders for your mind set, that includes fresh air. Good luck Bariatric Dietitian Helen Bauzon Welcome to globalgastricbandsolutions.com.au

Pain and fullness after eating very little

I would definitely get into your doctor to have it checked. Not to worry you but you could have a slip. But the good part is, the sooner you catch it, the better chance of it being corrected without surgery. Plus, being on slider foods isn't good for your weight loss either, in fact it could lead to gaining. Best wishes to you. I'll be crossing my fingers everything is ok for you.
  23. Hello everyone, I'm new to the board and haven't been banded yet so thought I'd introduce myself. My name's Amanda, I'm 28 years old, 5'1" (and 1/2. lol) and weigh about 225 lbs. I've struggled with my weight since I was a kid and have steadily been losing the battle since I've had my children. I've watched the seminar video a number of times and had an initial consultation with a banding place here in AZ last year. This is something I've been researching a lot the past couple of years and have made the decision that this is definitely what I want to do. I haven't started the approval process or found a surgeon yet. My husband (who also has a weight problem but is still iffy about this surgery and i'm not pressuring him...much ) has some connections so we're hoping to find the very best surgeon in the area. His insurance also just changed and while LAPBAND is still covered, the requirements have changed so we need to figure all that out again. I just wanted to tell everyone how much I've enjoyed reading through the forum and it really helped me to see that the choice I've made to pursue the band is really the right one. And once I'm banded (hopefully ) I'll be able to provide support to some of you. Hope everyone has a great weekend! Amanda Chomping at the bit to get started!
  24. Brielle - I know exactly how you feel. I am almost 3 weeks postop and I haven't lost any weight in the last two week. It is very frustrating. I am trying hard not to get on the scale everyday but it is really hard because I think that the weight will just melt away. Thankfully, as several people responded, this is something I believe everyone goes through. At least we can take comfort in the fact that we are not alone.

    It's all i think about

It's all I think about too. Already started myself on one protein drink a day, and tons of water. I Only 1 glass of pop a day now. Mine isn't until August, but being very involved with these things. I hope u don't drive my family crazy before surgery, because it's my whole way if thinking already. Even scrutinize everything I'm eating already to prepare. Just from not drinking tons if pop the past 10 days, losing weight. But they go on my first weigh in for surgery. Lots of luck to all!
