    1500 calorie count

I'm pre-op (for revision). I'd probably gain weight at 1500 calories. Over the past three months, my calorie count has dropped from 1200 to even under 1000 per day. I'm OK with it. I swore off sugar and flour 3 when I started the pre-op dieting. I don't get the cravings I once had although the first month was a b***h. Protein shakes are a game-changer. They weren't around when I had my gastric bypass 30 years ago. I usually substitute 1 meal per day with a protein shake. I've discovered that there are vast differences among the brands. I prefer the taste of the plant-based protein to the whey-based.

Pants Size and Other Bariatric Sites

It's really impossible to know because it depends on how you carry your weight and how it comes off. The first 30 pounds I lost seem to come off my legs and arms and I didn't change in size.
  3. I had RNY around 1990 at St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. I don't recall the surgeon's name. I kept the weight off for five years and gradually regained all I had lost in the following years.

    Six weeks out and scared??

Yup. I am a lil over 6 weeks out (almost 7, actually) and only lost 34.9! I hit a plateau around week 2/3-ish that lasted like 12 days. Now the entire past week I seemed to have stalled again as the scale has not moved. Not sure why I'm having so many stalls so soon when I have a LOT to lose still (not like I'm at the end of my losing stage when I expect to slow), am doing everything right, etc. It sucks when you're doing everything you should be and it's going slow/stall. I get it. I expressed this to my dietician last week and she assured me I was doing everything right and that I was losing a good amount of weight. She was happy with my progress and told me NOT to compare myself to others and what they have or haven't lost. So I guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and see what happens. Sounds like you're doing well too and making similar progress. Congrats!

    May Surgeries - check in!

I am a little over 5 weeks out and I finally hit my stall. I stalled with weight loss all of week 5 and so far into week 6 still at a stall. I have increased my walking to about 3 miles a day total. Preop weight was 302. SW: 281 CW: 257. Hopefully the stall is temporary. Currently eating about 800 calories a day and around 80-85 avg gms of protein daily.

Pants Size and Other Bariatric Sites

That’s a good question! I’m guessing it’s probably different for everyone. I’m down 15lbs due to my pre-op diet (last day - YAY!) and see no difference in my waist size or the fit of my clothes. I’m current 249.5lbs and if I recall the last time I lost weight and had to buy new jeans it was around the 230lbs mark for me.

Why did YOU choose your procedure?

I had gastric sleeve about 2 weeks ago. My stats are similar to yours: I have a lot of weight to lose, I am middle age, I had heartburn, etc. I chose sleeve because it was a safer procedure with less manipulation of the abdominal region. I had 3 cesareans and a hernia repaired over the last several years and I knew I had a lot of scar tissue. Given all of this, I thought that gastric sleeve would be the lesser risk and my surgeon agreed. I am a bit worried about the heartburn returning, but I have post-op pills for it and I also read that the more weight you lose you less of a chance for GERD, so I am hoping for the best. Good luck in your decision!

    3 Month Update

Hello fellow Bariatricals, I am 3 months out and wanted to compare everyone else 3 month weight loss. I have only list 13kg which is 28 pounds. I am not worried, as I am losing and Ive always had a slow metabolism. How were you guys at 3 months post op ( please only give me weight loss from surgery day).
  9. I had a friend who’d had a sleeve & I picked her brain plus I did a lot of research. Originally I had thought I’d just do the band because it was reversible but after the research I was leaning towards a sleeve. I had 31kg I wanted to lose, was almost 54 yrs. Most of my weight was gained when I reached menopause when I put on most of that weight in a year & couldn't shift it. Prior to that I bounced around 60-75kg most of my adult life. My metabolism was really slow too. I killed it from years of skipping meals. (I did that 500 calorie diet for 6 weeks the year before my surgery & barely lost 3kgs.) I had some reflux but had managed it quite successfully for years with dietary changes & only very occasionally needed medication. I enjoyed real food too. Wasn’t a fast food person, not one for pre prepared mass produced meals, only occasionally had a takeaway (no creamy sauces, no deep fried, steamed, grilled, lots of vegetables). My portion sizes were ok - way less than a lot of my friends who often finished my meal. Sure I enjoyed something sweet at night but it would be a couple of sweet biscuits or a cup cake. My biggest battle seemed to be a slow metabolism & then damn hormonal changes. After questioning me about my eating habits, weight gain/loss history & my lifestyle, my surgeon went through each of the surgeries with me, identifying their pros & cons & how they might impact my life. He also wanted to know what I was thinking. He agreed with my choice of the sleeve because I had been managing my reflux with diet already, my lifestyle & history. I’m happy with my sleeve. It was the right choice for me. Good luck with your decision.
  10. Aside from your surgeon’s recommendation for you…………. Which procedure YOU felt was best for you & why? I feel like since I am a foodie-I LOVE real food , I was an emotional eater , I have heart burn often, im over 100lbs overweight, I am over the age of 30( losing weight seems like an impossible task nowadays ), my metabolism is low, I plan on getting pregnant at least once in the future and portion control has been a major issue= Gastric bypass is best for me.

    Sleeve long term

stand alone sleeve isn't that old. It was just becoming popular when I got my RNY six years ago - it was becoming the non-RNY replacement for the lapband. It'd been around longer than that, but I don't think much. if you want longer-term stats, maybe research the DS (duodenal switch). The DS is an old surgery, and it uses a sleeved stomach. In fact, that's where they got the idea for the standalone sleeve. The DS used to be done in two stages (usually - not always). They do a sleeved stomach and then later go back in and bypass the small intestine (now most DS's are done in one surgery). They discovered that a lot of people lost weight with just the phase 1 (sleeved stomach), so they started offering that as a standalone surgery.
  12. Anyone got approved for a revision because of a dilated sleeve? Original surgery in 2012. Gained all weight back. Upper GI shows massively dilated sleeve, hiatal hernia and I have grade B esophagitis but biopsies are negative for inflammation.

    Insurance Medicare

Yes, I'm in Medicare and I just was denied because I don't have an unsuccessful attempt with a medical weight loss program on record. I am about to start a 4 month approved program. Hopefully that will cover it. I saw your post was from April. What have you found out in your case?

    June Surgeries

I am 16 days post surgery. Weight loss going well but I am experiencing excruciating pain nightly. It feels like someone punched me in the stomach. It can take 30 min or more to calm down. Im following the diet, walking. Not sure why. I'm hoping it's just healing process, going to see Dr this week. Has anyone had this?

    Honeymoon Period

I think your body stops losing when you hit a weight it likes. I would think you would keep losing as long as you stick to your plan.
  16. Congrats on your loss so far. 59lbs is great. Have you taken any body measurements? You’re losing weight from all over your body and body measurements can better show that inch loss here, half an inch there as against looking at your entire body as a whole. Years ago I remember reading that dropping 5kg (11lbs) was a dress size. But that’s if your sitting at or near a healthy bmi. Unfortunately, when we carry more weight we have to lose a hell of lot more to drop a clothing size or for weight loss to be really noticeable. As you know muscle weighs more than fat & if you’re building muscle you’ll also be changing your body shape.

    Family Support

So sorry they’re not being supportive. I didn’t tell anyone in my family but my mother & one brother & his wife because I knew they wouldn’t judge & would understand & be supportive. Have you turned it back on them & asked what research they have done & where they got their information? Is it from recognised & legitimate sources? What medical people have they spoken too? Have they looked at all your medical test results & history? How many people who’ve actually had weight loss surgery have they spoken too (they’ll never be able to compete with the number of people on this forum)? Do they understand the reasons why bypass is the better option for you? Do they think you’re not intelligent enough to make a rational, informed & logical decision about your own health? Why can’t they just say they’re concerned but offer support & willingness to be there for you? Honestly, there are risks. But there are risks with all surgeries & they are pretty low for bariatric surgeries. It can be a struggle to get used to how your digestive system works post surgery but you’ll get used to its idiosyncrasies & discover how it works for you. I hope they can see your position & can be encouraging & not negative.

    Struggle

Time goes by quickly, I can hardly believe I’m hitting two years. Stay on plan-you’ll see the benefits rolling in soon, which is super motivational. Some of my really early benefits-before people even noticed I’d lost weight-were getting off BP meds and getting rid of my CPAP. It really does get easier over time.

    Medication & Weight gain

I gained nearly 50 pounds on paroxetine in my 30s. It was awful.
  20. My tipping point was when my weight reached 100 lbs more than when I was 18, and a BMI of 40. Years of constant dieting only caused me to continually gain weight. I was ready to give up and try to be happy with the way I was, it didn’t work, and when I had trouble bending over and getting out of breath going upstairs I knew I needed to do something that was permanent. I had my surgery on 6/28 and am doing great. I wish I hadn’t waited so long.
  21. So this is a bit of an odd one. Has anyone noticed that the weight loss post surgery (I had VSG) is less noticeable compared to when you lost weight before? To explain a little more, I’m almost 14 weeks out and down 59lbs… but I don’t look like I’ve lost that much. Before, a loss of 10-15lbs was noticeable to me both on how I looked in the mirror and how my clothes fit. I do notice a SLIGHT difference through my weekly progress pics now and my clothes are fitting better, but it just doesn’t seem anywhere close to 60lbs. I find this a bit disconcerting on several levels. My goal weight isn’t a must for me, but how I look is. I feel like I’m maybe not losing fat the way I used to in a more balanced way, or that maybe I’m losing more muscle as well that’s contributing to this. I do strength training 4 days a week to keep up muscle building (I used to be a bodybuilder so I have more muscle mass than most) and do cardio 5 days a week for 20 mins. My diet 80-110g of protein and 850-1050 calories.

How much more are you planning to lose??

My likely response: "The only weight I'm really looking to lose in the short term is GETTING YOU OFF MY F*CKING BACK!" To be fair, I have on occasion been accused of being somewhat indelicate and tactless... "He's uncouth. Couth him!!!"
  23. MistySkye

    What was your tipping point?

In the last 5 years I gained around 50lbs - my tipping point was joint & mobility issues. I have been overweight my entire life. High of 270, low of 170. I was 241 when I contacted the surgeon. 245 the day I started the pre-op diet. I have my 50th looming in 2 years. I love to travel, so the last thing I wanted was to not be able to enjoy that. I was having nightmares about getting stuck or not fitting in things. The call had to be made.
  24. I usually wear tight leggings for my cardio workout and later change into loose-fitting joggers before I take a walk in my neighborhood. Yesterday, I was feeling lazy about changing my pants and I realized: I can probably wear leggings in public without anyone saying, "Ew, she should NOT be wearing that," or "Nobody needs to see THAT."* I might be able to pass for just another basic b****! * To be clear, I don't think anyone should say that no matter what someone's weight, but I've heard people say it and it always stopped me from wearing leggings in public.
  25. I am just over 18 months post RNY surgery and am incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity for this tool, and glad I made the decision to do it. Even with everything going on in the world today, I am feelling happier and healthier than I have in a long time. I am 5'10, just turned 43 year old women (41 at time of surgery). Highest weight was 334, day of surgery 292, today I am maintaining right around 160. So many non scale victories, but a few of my favorites: - I have a ton more energy. I used to fall asleep on the couch after work most nights, and weekends I did errands and chores and rarely had the energy for much else. Now, I use my evenings to chores and save my weekends for hiking or other fun activities. - My knees and ankles don't hurt. Before, just walking around the block meant pain, and my knees ached everyday (arthritis). Now, I walk between 1.5-2 miles almost every day and rarely have any pain. I can even do yoga poses like child's pose as I'm gaining flexibility back. - I am out enjoying life more. I have always loved hike, but even when my weight wasn't as high I had a hard time as I was out of shape. Now, I hike most weekends, going 10+ miles and 2K elevation gain without a problem. Last weekend, at the top of a pretty steep hill my heart rate was still below 100! As the world reopens I feel more comfortable going to restaurant's (chairs are so much more comfortable!) and I'm sure other activities will be easier too. - I started a new job in April, and hadn't met anyone in person. We had lunch the other day and I wasn't self conscious and worried that they'd be judging me for my weight. - I can fit into cute and stylish clothes. I'm still figuring out what works on my new body, but I can go into little shops and they actually have things that fit! I'm generally a S top and 8-10 in bottoms. I do have some work to do to clean up my diet. I've slipped a little in the last couple of months and need to get back to eating healthier before it starts impacting my progress. My goal is to not have to hyper focus on food and do regular meal planning with healthy foods and just eat until I am full. Hopefully, coupled with exercise that will help me maintain. Thanks for letting me share. Lori
