    Helllpp Im Starvin!!!

my dietitian has me on full liquids, I see my surgeon and my dietitian tomorrow, I want to ask my surgeon just what the deal is. To me ( don't forget I'm a retired commercial roofer) I can understand about how important the healing is and how we all have different tolerances that we need to learn (SLOWLY) I just want to know, is it, that if I were to try a small bite of puree chicken and didn't have any problem, Is it that I have to be on Clear, one week, full liquid one week, then start mushies? Or does a food like (just for example chicken puree again) chicken irratate my GI track and should never pass my lips until at least week three? I already know we are all different, just wondering are these the rules for the people that might wolf down a big bite and forget and get stuck or if you start before those three weeks you WILL get stuck. I hope I got this point across?? My hunger is much better after listening to my dietitian and having the milk, and greek yogurt unjury Protein shakes, but like right now, I'm beyond starving (thats how I feel this second) half hour ago I was fine. Come on purees!!! I can't wait until I can have them! Oh yeah, I'm on day 8 tomorrow.
  2. 3 more days. So ready for this. Not nervous at all. Only had to do 5 days of pre op liquid and am able to have veggies and yogurt. Feel very fortunate about that. Stocked up on muscle milk shakes as 20 grams of protein in each shake. Got my vitamins and am registered at the hospital. Tuesday can't come soon enough. HUGE thank u to this forum. It's been the best support system ever.

Aside from sf jello I cant think of anything that's not dairy, ie yogurt, pudding, cream of wheat etc.

    Working away from home

I travel for work a lot and my husband likes to eat out a lot. Honestly, I have no problem aside from getting these giant portions that I cannot eat. I choose the best choices for me and take the rest to go. I can usually get another 2 meals out of it (maybe more). tip: if your meal comes with a salad, get the dressing on the side otherwise you're in for a soggy mess and inedible as a leftover. When I'm out of town/staying in a hotel, I try to get a room with a refrigerator and microwave. That way I can pay for 1 meal that lasts me and I save on expenses. You didn't mention at what point in this process you are, your profile says pre-op, so I'll also provide a tip related to those special liquid or soft diets. When I was in pre-op and/or freshly post-op, I took items I could eat with me. EX: I had protein shakes with me (either ready made or ones I could mix easily in a shaker, as long as I knew I'd have access to milk). I kept protein bars with me and if I had a way to refrigerate things, I took string cheese, yogurt or cottage cheese with me.
  5. That is also a problem, I hate yogurt and cottage cheese. I ate broccoli and cheese soup tonight and I think I ate 6 small spoonfuls before that painful gas bubble hit. It sucks I just wish I could eat without it being painful.

    My Story So Far (Long)

I hope things get better for you... I was very dizzy and weak until I started incorporating some more calories.. I would add peanut butter and banana to a protein smoothie or mash a banana into my yogurt... I think the leg pain should be checked by your surgeon or PCP... My prayers and best wishes go out to you!! Please update us when you can...

    Post Op Diet

Yogurt is a good thing to take to work. Also, you can take a potato and microwave it. Creamy soups are good too if you don't mind opening a can and microwaving them. I take my magic bullet blender. Its really small and its very convenient for things like work. Good luck.

    7 Days to go!!!!

Everyone on this site can relate! It's the hardest part of the process. My doctor allowed pureed soups, low fat yogurt, sugar free ice pops, fruit smoothies and sugar free jello. Good luck!

Any photos of "plated" food portions?

At your stage, best thing to do is measure your portions. Never eyeball, or you might find your portions creep up which can slow your losses. 3 Tablespoons at the absolute max for your stage of purees, or up to 4 ounces of more liquidy foods like yogurt or soup. Hope this helps!
  11. I love to read all the posts this has been quite a journey...my surgeon is strict as heck..I started out 268 07/06/2011 and am at 220 09/12/2011 but he would like for me to be at 210...eating enough protein is challenging for me...the super sweet Nectar did not work...so I love the unflavored Unjury...mix with my yogurt, or in milk to get my liquid...watch the milk intake as it can make you constipated:~( The one Nectar that I really love is the Caribbean Cooler great in water and avail on Amazon for the best price I have seen:~) Keep up all the great work!!

    Puree need more protein

I too pureed everything. Being a vegetarian it was a bit of a challenge. I found that CVS whey powder had 26 grams of Protein. So every morning I started with a shake made with unsweetened almond milk and a scoop of almond butter. It was a nice boost to start the day, clocking on at 31 grams of protein. I also used prosource noncarb Liquid Protein. I'd but the neutral flavor and add it to herbal tea. Moving onto food, I made a soft scrambled egg with a tiny bit of shredded cheese and a tsp of 0% plain greek yogurt. Once a week I made Soups using Beans or root veg like squash or sweet potato, spinach and corresponding protein powders. I mixed salsa with greek yogurt, or mashed a bit of fresh fruit and had that with greek yogurt. I also had plain veg broth at night as a treat if I made my protein goal throughout the day. Even now I prefer to start my day with a Protein Shake. I usually woke out in the mornings and the big protein boost give me enough energy to work out but isn't too heavy on my stomach that I get sick.

    New feeling

As far as the protein shakes go, try Unflavored Unjury protein powder you can add it to any food or drink. I had to get it because i couldnt stand the thought of drinking another shake! Unjury is what my surgeon recommended and alot of others. Unflavored is 90 cal, zero carbs and 25g protein. I gladly add that to my mashed potatoes, yogurt, etc to get the protein in, anything but the shakes!
  14. I am 8 days post op and yesterday was my first day on solids and I felt hungry all day. But I am only allowed soft proteins right now such as cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, eggs, mashed beans(pinto or black) and cheese. Try some of those when you eat instead of applesauce or pudding so you are getting your protein in and it will stay with you longer. I think yesterday I just felt hungry b.c I knew it was the first day in 3 weeks I was able to 'eat' something. Congrats on the 19 pounds, that is awesome!!! Keep me posted on how you are doing since we are only 2 days apart! We can do this together!!!
  15. I eat a packet of tuna for lunch or a yogurt. Then later I will eat a piece of string cheese or one of the 100 calorie cottage cheese. I also still drink shakes from Costco. They have 30 grams of protein in one shake.

    protein drink before or after

I eat carbs before my workout and drink a protein shake after. I'll eat a yogurt or a pancake before my workout because I need the quick energy and the protein after is for recovery. So far so good. Protein shakes are way too heavy to drink before a workout IMO.

    This is hard....

You have to build up to it. Getting in both my Protein and fluids was a challenge fore me at first until I figured out how to do both. I was most successful starting the day with a high Protein shake. One scoop of either CVS whey protein + a half to a whole cup of Fage 0% greek yogurt using ¼ cup of Water and lots of ice gets me 30 - 40gms of protein. Using the ice and water works towards my fluids and keeps the shake from being too thick. The yogurt and water keep it from being sickly sweet. Even in the very beginning I could drink this in under 2 hours. This means I had the rest of the day to get in the rest of my protein and time to drink some water without feeling like I'm drinking all day.
  18. I use mihealth to log everything that I eat. It keeps track of my calories and nutrition and gives me a summary daily. I don't do well with out it, it is SO easy to slip in a couple hundred calories accidentally. I'm doing about 1100 calories a day. I need over 60 grams protein a day. I usually eat eggs for breakfast (so easy to make a big batch and portion for the week). I have a protein drink after I exercise (odwalla or bolthouse), salmon or homemade white chili for dinner and a protein bar as a snack. I'm not hungry very often and I'm getting 70+ grams of protein. I have had to stop doing all liquid calories (oragne juice is my bad) except my post workout protein drink. Nuts are a great snack too and I buy the little packs and carry them with me. I dont leave the house without a protein bar and bottle of water, ever. A couple sugar free jolly ranchers cover me when I have a sweet attack. Carbs (yogurt, oatmeal, etc) tend to trigger hunger for me so I'm very low carb.
  19. I think maybe you are eating too many "liquids" (oatmeal and yogurt are liquids) anything you have to eat with a spoon is a liquid and passes thru band quick, therefore being hungrier later- try a solid protein- like a protein bar or egg or something.I'm struggling with the amt of calories i need myself!( see my "ughhh so frustrated" topic lol
  20. I was told to use the same diet as the first two week fast. I've been eating a ton of applesauce. I can't wait for this month to end so I can eat some regular food. I miss the chewing sensation. I also miss hot food, the broth totally doesn't count. I can eat applesauce, yogurt (which is too sweet after surgery for me), and chicken broth. I'm allergic to oatmeal, but other patients can have oatmeal. I dislike the texture of jell-o, so that was out for me too.

    Pre-op diet - pantry necessities

I love the suggestions so far. I would add, do not over-buy. I am still doing this. A single Healthy Choice Soup is 3-4 or more servings for me post-op. I have more than a months supply in my pantry now. If you buy perishables, watch the expiration date. I threw out a bunch of yogurts for that reason as they expired before I could eat them. I have a bunch of Protein shakes that I will probably not use, as I've moved on and some I just can't stand anymore. As to baby food, applesauce with no sugar added was a friend of mine. I liked the ones with additional fruits, but watch for no added sugar. My blender was a better friend than buying a baby food alternative. Follow your Drs lists. Each Dr will have a slightly different program and progression. Be sure to let us know how this goes for you!!!

    Greek yogurt equals yum!

I don't mind the Greek yogurts but Chobani is the only brand I can't swallow. YUCKO! Glad you're enjoying it! Chobani is the only brand my son will eat in Greek yogurt...go figure?

    Greek yogurt equals yum!

How did you go in for Fage and end up with yoplait?? I've been looking at the Fage website tonight and they have a couple of doable recipes.. This one for hummus looks good. I've been going and buying pre made Greek yogurt hummus but I might give this a try.. http://www.fageusa.com/plainkitchen/recipes/crushed-spicy-hummus-with-yogurt-spiced-baked-pita-chips/

    Need new Breakfast Ideas

Ok..I know you don't like greek yogurt. I don't either. I actually hate it. It tastes awful...BUT....I have made something with greek yogurt that is so delicious whenever I eat it I feel like I'm eating some kind of dessert. Take a 1oz packet of plain Quaker instant oatmeal and make it. Make sure it sits in the hot Water long enough to get sort of thick, Then get the brand Fage no fat yogurt a small 6oz. container. Mix it up really well so it is really creamy consistency. Slice some bananas into the hot oatmeal and then put the greek yogurt in there. Mix it all together. It is really good. I know it sounds atrocious but really it is good. If you try it I want to know what you think!!! And if you hate it...tell me!!!!
  25. So I went to my 2 month follow up today and the doctor is concerned about the things I have been eating for Breakfast, he wants me to get more Protein. I did explain to him that my stomach is a bit more temperamental in the morning. I have been eating cream of wheat or yogurt and he thinks I should be eating more protein rich foods. Half of an english muffin with Peanut Butter on it works for my stomach well but I can't eat that every day and I doubt my doctor wants me eating half of an english muffin. I cannot eat eggs, my stomach doesn't like them or breakfast sausage at this point. Bacon works but again I can't eat that every day. I do not like greek yogurt or cottage cheese. Any ideas? perhaps someone will mention something I didn't think of.
