    Not losing

If you dont stop obsessing for every pound now, you are going to be sorely upset when you go a few weeks and lose nothing. Peaks and valleys for weightloss, never a constant loss. Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App
  2. Hi Everyone. My name is Cindy and I am waiting for my primary insurance to send their denial letter so my surgery can be scheduled. My primary insurance will not pay, but my secondary insurance will pay. Plus secondary insurance does not do pre-authorization letters. So, as soon as the denial letter is received from the primary insurance we can schedule my surgery. My surgeon said it will most likely be mid-May. I have thought of myself as being overweight most of my life. Looking back on it, I was a twig when I graduated from high school. It's just that those who were around me were so petite. I had one successful pregnancy 30 years ago and was never able to lose the excess weight I gained then. Over the years I have tried every diet, sensible and fad, that I could find with varying results. But every time I lost weight on a "diet" I would put it back on and then some when the "diet" was over or I got sick of it. Over the last 3-5 years my weight has been steadily creeping up and I am so tired of being tired and out of breath all the time. I want to be able to do things with my grand-children but I am not able to do much of anything for more than a few minutes at a time before I need to rest. I am winded just walking up one flight of stairs to our bedroom so I avoid having to up and down as much as possible. I started my surgical weight loss journey about 5 months ago. It took longer for me to decide this was really what I needed to do than it has to do all the prerequisite visits, tests, and screenings. I really wanted to get the gastric sleeve but it is excluded by my insurance, so I will be getting the by-pass instead. The reason I wanted the sleeve was to avoid the malabsorbsion (sp?) and to be able to continue taking my anti-inflammatories for my osteo-arthritis. However, I have made peace with having the bypass and having to make the commitment to be really careful to get the proper nutrients and supplements to keep my healthy; because that is what this is all about anyway. I want my life back. I am sick of living a half life. In February I joined a gym and hired a personal trainer. I have not lost any weight, though my body composition has improved, I have more lean and less fat than I did when I started exercising. The best thing about doing this is that I have found something that I love to do. I can't believe I would ever say that I love going to the gym and working out with a trainer. It is fantastic and I am really looking forward to the improvements I will see after I begin working out again after I am healed from the surgery. I am sure the that the walking that I will be doing during the healing process will get me ready for even more intense work outs than I have been able to do to this point. My husband had this same surgery 14 1/2 years ago. He never had the kind of support that is available today and is amazed at the amount of pre-surgical preparation and information that I am getting. He lost about 80 pounds when he had his surgery and over the years had put some of it back on. But since I have started my journey he has been using the things that I have been learning and has lost nearly 15 pounds since December. He is nearing his lowest post-surgical weight. I think he is even more excited about me having this surgery than I am. He is being very supportive. When I told my family back in January that I was considering having surgery they were all very supportive. My best friend, who is more like a sister than merely a friend, decided that it was time for her to have bariatric surgery as well. She had not heard of the gastric sleeve before, so as soon as I told her about it she started researching it for herself. Last month she flew to Mexico and had it done. When I talked with her several days ago she had lost a total of 29 pounds (including the pre-surgery weight loss). Anyway, I feel like I have a great support system in place. And I am SOOOO ready to make this change in my life and to make it a permanent change. It's funny, I have never felt so certain about, or committed to, any of my previous weight loss attempts. This is my year for change.

    Dizziness

OMG girl me too. Its aweful isn't it. It was low when I went for my post op appt Monday and I felt very jittery today so I went to my local md. and my bp was regular. (they even took it 3 xs) and the average was low. I wasn't anemic, I did ask for a B12 shot and he said most people who have these kind of surgerys will need them . and I have not started exercising so I know for me it can't be that yet. I told him Im suppose to eat the size of my fist and he looked at my fist and said you are probably starving yourself, eat alittle more. Its definitely a balance of eating the proteins versus the carbs. I have contacted a nutritionst so hopefully that will help me. Someone else mentioned the low blood sugar. because we do eat more proteins then carbs sometimes, go to your local md as suggested, there shouldn't be a charge to just check your bp. Let us know what you find out!

    Incision Pain

Once I stopped the pain pills I didn't even start taking Tylenol. The pain wasn't bad at all, just tender enough to let me know it was there. I was driving and back at work after two weeks.

    Incision Pain

I was off the pain pills by the second week. It was still tender for about a month.

    Pre-Op Diet

I was on a two week, modified atkins type program. All I had to do was keep under 40 carbs, which was super easy. I enjoyed wine and cheese and steak the entire time LOL I lost ten pounds, but was not required to lose anything. Many do the preop just to get your liver in better shape. It has nothing to do with weight loss with some docs.

    Pre-Op Diet

I had a two week pre-op diet of only liquids. It was the hardest thing ever!!! I had to get in 3-4 Protein shakes a day and 64oz of Water. I was allowed to eat sugar free Jello, pudding and crystal lights and Soup. I lost 12 or 14lbs. I did cheat also but it was on grilled chicken and broccoli! @ Badkness beer is not in your future. You can just forget about alcohol altogether for at least the next 6 months if not longer. The point of the pre-op diet is to not only jump start rapid weight loss but to also shrink your liver so it its easier to handle during surgery. If it's too big they will just sew you right up and be done without doing anything to your stomach and this will be all for not. After surgery the carbonation of beer will make you sick. Besides you will only be drinking 4oz at a time anyway. Start cutting down now!!

  9. 1. Not to let the scales become my center of life 2. Focus on becoming healthy by doing the following a) Getting Lapband Excercising - will work up to 5 days a week. Right now, making it a goal to exercise 3 x's per week c) Making better choices, but not beat myself up if I make the wrong choice, realizing I'm only human. 3. Work on paying off my debt. I will do this by not using my credit cards in 2007. 4. Work on having a better relationship with my teenage children. I will do this by spending more quality time with them. 5. I also want to make it a habit to read my daily scriptures. I will do this by keeping them in my car so I will remember to read them. 6. I want to work at being a better employee at work. I will do this by spending less time on the internet. These are just a few of my goals, and I will update them as I think of more.

    Vitamins

Everything you need for your first week of post op diet. I'd just take your food list to the store with you. Start trying different Protein shakes to find one you like now, otherwise you may be stuck with a yucky one after surgery.

    Hitting the gym

I was in the gym 2 weeks out. Kept it at the elliptical, treadmill, 5 lb weights and resistance bands.
  13. I am beyond annoyed and frustrated with my surgeon's office , I saw them last Thursday and was told they would submit everything either Friday or Saturday well I called the insurance Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and each time I was told they didn't receive anything I keep calling the office and they either say the case manager is in a meeting or out of the office well they finally called me back yesterday and said she submitted Wednesday night I was like ok I'll call to check Friday and guess what today insurance told me they have not received anything and that they usually see it in the system within an hour of receiving anything, so wth is going on??! why do they schedule my surgery and pre op appointment if they can't do their damn job, I know is not the doctors fault but this people are so inconsiderate I'm 3 weeks from what they scheduled and don't need this added stress ugh... Frustrated with surgeon's office....

I'd be frustrated too! I agree with Susan. I would call and leave a message with whoever I needed to asking why your paperwork is not being submitted when you were told a week ago that it was going to. Ask if there is anything you can do to get the ball rolling, or who the correct person to contact would be to get the job done... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. I was stuck at 300.4 pounds for .... litterally 14 weeks. Not kidding, once in a while it would go up a little and I think once i was 300.2 but I could not get to 299. I was eating right and exercising at the gym 5 - 6 times (hr each time) a week. I had just hit a plateau I could not get past, but to sit above that 300 pound mark just about drove me nuts. Anyway, I went and saw my Dr, she did not think I needed a fill, went the the nutritionist and had all my daily food and exercise journal with me. She said everything looked great, wouldn't change a thing with my eating. She suggested I change up my exercise. She suggest a weight lifting class "body pump" I changed gyms and started body pump and with in a week I saw 299. Sooner or later it had to give, but i think the weight class is what did it. She said after losing 130 pounds my body was just saying "no more" "this is not who you are" and that I just had to fight my way through it. I wish the 2nd 100 would come off as easily as the first 100 did. I eat healthy and exercise regularly but I notice I am a little more lax when it comes to snacking etc. I think I feel so good about the weight I've lost that once in a while I can still convince myself it is ok to have something that I probably shouldn't. I have never totally deprived my self but I did used to be tougher on my self and I can tell the difference. Just keep up the battle, like I said, eventually.... it's got to give as long as there is a colorie deficit! Best of Luck!

  17. Sorry, should've explained myself more. That's my surgery date. I don't want to reschedule so I'm really trying to lose the lbs. unfortunately I've been stuck since last week and I'm cutting it close. ☹️ Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. Avoid carbs like the plague - no sugars and no starches, and you will be less hungry. Make sure the shakes have 1/3 the RDA of Vitamins and minerals, or take a good Multivitamin.

    What do you tell people?

Before surgery I told my work that I was "having surgery" on x date and needed a couple weeks off. My co-workers are hyper-aware of the law (most of them are lawyers!) and knew better than to ask beyond that. I told my very closest friends and immediate family that I was having surgery, and the type of surgery, only a week before. I didn't want to give people time to get nervous or negative! Everyone was great and very supportive. After surgery, when people ask me how I am losing weight, I tell them I am eating high protein and low carb, journaling everything on MFP, and that I had weight loss surgery, specifically the sleeve. I am a private person too, and it is hard for me to talk about, but I kind of want people to be aware of this option and to help dispel the myths about weight loss surgery. So I grit my teeth and force myself to talk about it! So far virtually everyone has been positive and interested in a good way. I had one person tell me that I "cheated" but I expected it from her - she's a bitch who is always saying mean things to me and others. So I rolled my eyes and moved on.
  20. I know this topic has come up a gazillion times, but here we go again. I met with my surgeon last week, and he gave me the option of doing either surgery. I had assumed RnY because I occasionally have mild reflux and I'm quite large (BMI > 50). The doctor said my reflux is so mild, that it doesn't preclude sleeve surgery. I don't have diabetes, or any of the standard comorbidities that would typically push someone towards RnY. For me, advantages of sleeve are being able to use NSAIDs if needed, maintaining my pyloric valve, no surgery on my intestines, lower complication rate, less malabsorption. Advantages of RnY: greater average weight loss in first year (though it seems to even out by year 3 according to my reading), potential negative reinforcement of eating sweets (dumping syndrome). The Vitamin protocols for both are the same with my program, and our bariatrics specialist says that the risk of malnutrition is very low if you are compliant with Vitamins (<3% for compliant folks, while they typically see closer to 15% of patients with issues). Take your vitamins, folks! For me, it comes down to am I willing to take a higher risk of complications for the possibility of greater weight loss? I'm in this to be healthy and active, not skinny or attractive. It's a tough call to make. Especially when the end result, what happens 3, 5, 15 years down the line, all comes down to how I use the tool that I am given. What were the key things that you thought about when making your choice?

    Searching for wisdom

bigdaddy - scroll down the strings in the mens room and you will find a few threads regarding working out / lifting that have some good stuff in them. Personally, I am at the gym 5am at least 5 days a week and do 60 minutes on the treadmill and then around 20 minutes lifting. On Wednesday nights, I play tennis indoors and Thursday nights softball.
  22. How are doing doing since your surgery? I had my surgery done at EMMC in Bangor. I go for my 6 week check up on Tuesday and hope to have a fill. The last 2 weeks I have not lost any weight. Give us an update.
  23. Already started my journey and I meet with my surgeon on the 30th to talk all about the surgery...but today has been a bad day. Went to go get dressed for the day and I noticed that I have so many new stretch marks all over my stomach that I'm in so much pain! For gaining 100 lbs in one year I'm so uncomfortable... I've been on prednisone for 3 years and the weight gain is so bad. I have been so strong about this because I know its the medication but going to my moms today.... I broke down. I am so looking forward to the surgery. . I want to just be comfortable and have a day where I go to put on a T-shirt I bought last week and have it fit!! Feel like I'm moving in slow motion!!!!

    Cant Stop Burping!

Good to know it's not just me & my body bing weird. I had to have my priming saline removed at week two post op because the burping progressed to severe chest pain. Couldn't even deal with pressure from a sports bra. Doc says most likely my stomach swelled inside the band make things worse. Been kinda Bah-Hum-Buggie since he removed that saline. Haven't been staying full since my purée diet was falling straight through. It's subsided some since I started soft solids but still not staying full/content. Haven't thought about smoking since I quit for my surgery and I've been thinking about them for days to avoid eating more than I should. Need to hang on till I can get a fill & keeping myself busy. Harder to do since husband is traveling a lot this month & it's just me & the kiddos. One. Which is a cranky teen boy

    I have a few questions..

I was banded in 2008 and by 2011 my body pretty much said "screw you I hate this thing" and I had to be completely u filled. I gained back all the weight I lost (about 80lbs over 2 years). I decided to go to gastric bypass and because I wanted it done right away I went to Mexico and paid for it. I was in the hospital for 3 days came home a couple days later and was back to work (desk job) feeling pretty good. I did have some complications from my surgery that was related to the long long travel home and being in birth control which put me at higher risk for a clot and I ended up with a pulmonary embolism. So that wasn't much fun but it was a trifecta of things that ended with me having one. I had my bypass Oct 3, 2014 and now just over 7 months later I have lost 100lbs and I feel fantastic. Despite my complications from it my only regret - not doing it sooner. All the best in your decision. I do not miss that band one bit. Bypass life is much better.
