    Am I eating too much?

I’m 8 weeks out. Maybe I am pushing it a bit and should cut back a little. Hopefully my dietitian will give me some guidance if they ever get back to me.

    Am I eating too much?

Did your surgeon give an amount of food to eat? Mine & my daughter’s surgeon/plan/team (we each had different doctors) told us to not eat more then 3 oz. I am over 3 years out & I still weight my food at home. When we go out I cut my meat in 1/2 & have about 2 bites of veggies. I know that’s about 3oz. I know from doing my own cooking that adding ham, cheese & tomato to 1 egg is more then 3 oz. Stick with your plan & doctors instructions! Don’t try to eat more just because you can.
  3. Hi everyone! I'm scheduled for my revision on March 21, 2022. I had my original surgery 21 years ago! My sw prior to the first surgery was 375, in the first year I lost 100lbs getting down to 275... my lowest weight since then was 248 due to an illness. I've bounced up and down between 250 and 280 since then. I am a diabetic, have Gerd and was just diagnosed with very slow motility (my pcp says gastroparesis but my surgeon just says slow motility). When I started the process for revision (7months ago) my surgeon didn't think insurance would cover for just weight loss, but with further testing we discovered the digestion issue, his tune changed and surgery was approved! I know a lot has changed with protocols in the last 21 years! I see my surgeon next week for pre-op so I will be asking him a lot, but wanted to find out from anyone who's had the proximal to distal revision as well: What was the recovery like for the distal revision compared to the original surgery? Did you have to spend anytime in the hospital? My surgeon already mentioned he does it outpatient and I should go home same day, which seems crazy to me! I know weight loss can be slower with a revision. How much did you lose and in what timeframe? Any other pieces of advice? I plan on strictly following the food phases that the nutritionist gave me and leaning toward the longest of the time frames she gave me... ie 2-3 weeks post op liquid, 4-8 weeks soft foods etc... I am determined to lose and get to a goal weight of 155-175 which my surgeon said was possible in our initial meeting 8 months ago.
  4. Hi Im a bit worried I am able to eat too much. I have had very little guidance from the dietician since my gastric bypass but have just emailed them for advice. Im concerned that I am able to eat too much for 8 weeks post bypass. Tonight I have had a 2 egg omelette with cheese and ham and plum tomatoes. I ate maybe 1/2 -3/4 of the omelette and 2 tomatoes. Is this too much do you think? I feel full but not uncomfortable.

I'm two days after you. March 24th. I just had my phone medical consult. I have a one week diet of 2 protein shakes and one meal per day. Reminds me of the Slim Fast commercials.
  6. I agree with Catwoman and I am putting my money on the gum, stop chewing for a week and see what happens

    Five Month Post Op Stall

Same thing happened to my surgery buddy, she had a stall at 5 months and has only just starting losing again at the 7 month mark. all normal hang in there, don't give up
  8. I am 7 months out and I still cant tell, I could in the early days say the 3 month mark but now nope I am just guessing when I have had enough and sometimes I think I eat to much but I just don't feel any restriction the way others describe it
  9. I'm 6 weeks out, and I never have been able to drink as much as prescribed. I seem to swallow air, then I have to burp, then I get nauseated... I try, just hard to do...
  10. Congrats! I had the same story, never any pain, felt great right away. I used a charity thrift store, St. Vincent de Paul to get transition clothes as I changed sizes in order to pay $2 or $3 per item rather than $20+ per item while I was losing. It worked out well. I changed sizes about every 20 pounds.

    1st day post op vsg

How are you feeling? Are you still in the hospital? Get up and walk 10 minutes an hour if you can. You'll feel tired for about a week after surgery.

    Five Month Post Op Stall

Oh, and as a big believer in sports, but as a non-fan of running: shake it up in the exercise department! Many think it's all about increasing endurance - you've mentioned doubling your steps - and while that's logical and good, it also puts up higher and higher barriers to 'getting your exercise in'. I accepted that I really hate running. But that it does something good for me. So I've made a deal with myself: I'll end every workout at the gym (which is like 2x a week for me, and that's it besides biking around town) with a 5 minute sprint on the treadmill. If I am not exhausted after 5 minutes, I'll run faster - not longer - next time. Just getting your pulse way up there for a little while tells your body 'hey, better be ready for this'. Just an idea
  13. I had my big pre-op appointment with the nurse and surgeon today. They've made some major improvements to the program. They have a stricter infection control protocol. No shaving for a full week before surgery, using the incentive spirometer more before and after, using special soap the night before and morning of surgery. Pain control is totally different. No more pain pump button. I'll get IV pain meds until the leak test the next morning. Then after that it's Tylenol and Flexeril, with the possibility of something stronger if that combination doesn't work well. I'll be taking Colace twice a day for 30 days to prevent constipation. I get to have small sips of water the day of surgery instead of waiting until the leak test the next morning. I will be limited to an ounce per hour to avoid putting too much pressure on the fresh staple lines. While in the hospital I'll gradually increase the amount of fluid per hour. No Foley catheter for the first day either this time. It was nice with the sleeve because I didn't have to get up every 15 minutes to pee. But they're encouraging even more movement post-op than before so there's that. Also, just one day in the hospital instead of 2. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. You've gotten great advice so far and I don't have any practical advice to add. I would like to say, enjoy the process as much as you can. I know it sounds weird but when I had my sleeve surgery 7 years ago I rushed things and kept thinking about the next step. For my revision to bypass on Tuesday the 1st, I treated myself to new pajama pants to take to the hospital, I bought exciting flavors of protein shakes. My backpack is going to be light... Phone, long charging cord, lip balm, my noise cancelling headphones to help block out some of the hospital noises, my 3 ring binder of surgery info, pajama pants and not much else. I've had 2 endoscopies and another unrelated procedure in the past few months and I did much better with letting myself relax. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Five Month Post Op Stall

Frustratingly, stalls can happen once or multiple times while your losing. They can last for a week to 3 or 4 weeks. If they persist, have a chat with your dietician/nutritionalist to review your diet. Sometimes a small tweak can kick start your loss again. I also think you’ve answered some of your own question by saying you’ve let your food choices slide a little (we’ve probably all done it at some time). Best is to get back on your plan re food choices, portion sizes, etc. I have a small window of calorie intake variation to maintain (don’t check my calories everyday but do random checks) & recently I’ve put on a little weight. I’ve realised, in my attempt to up my protein intake a bit (since my gall was removed I don’t absorb it well) I’ve increased my calories. Increasing my portion size of meat (3oz to 4), throwing in some beans to my lunch salads, etc. & there’s the reason for the weight gain. Though I reduced the amount of vegetables I was eating the calorie difference was not enough to compensate. Can’t believe I didn’t realise. My surgeon’s doctor has put me back on Creons to help with protein absorption & I’m going back to my previous eating habits.

    Severe back pain

I’ve had mid to upper back pain and thigh numbness ever since my surgery 3.5 months ago. I haven’t been taking anything for it, but it is annoying. Im seeing a neurologist about it in a couple of weeks.

    Normal Bites?

By 3 months I was taking pretty normal bites of the things that I eat. I try to remember to chew more and eat slowly. I was surprised by how fast I was able to do so.

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

I had my surgery (sleeve) one month ago and I have lost 30 pounds. I weighed 210 before and now 182. I’m still having trouble with feeling full and knowing when I’m full. I do feel uncomfortable at times after eating but nothing really bad. I try to eat foods that have nutrient value. No rice, pasta or bread. I feel sometimes I can eat more than 3 to 4 ounces. Is that normal?

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

Yeah, a lot of people say that to me. I just contacted my nutritionist again today to give her an update. I also sent her my logs for the last 60 days. So, before changing it up I'll see what she says. Having said that, by the end of the day I feel totally satisfied on the days where I stay close to 800 or under. If I ever feel hungry I do eat more of sensible foods. And if that means going over then I go over. But just based on how much food I can fit in, I normally don't go over 1200. I also stick to 3 meals a day but again, that keeps me satisfied so I'm not even sure how consistent I could be with staying close to 1200 every day.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

I'm surprised your calories are that low so far out. I eat 900-1200 calories and I'm five months out. Some days are even higher. Maybe try to increase calories for a few days/week to see if that shakes something loose?

    Five Month Post Op Stall

I know people have different opinions about calorie counting, but when I hit a stall (and I also had one at 5 months... and have another little one right now) I think it is really important to measure and track your actual calorie intake to ensure you know what you are doing, not just guessing what you are doing or how much you are eating. So, that would be my recommendation - track and see what you are averaging for calories. Sometimes you may need to increase food intake to push past a stall, though if you are going off program, you probably should see where you are now before going for that approach.
  22. Hey y'all! I had my surgery on 2/17, was discharged on 2/18, and back to work on 2/21 (against my doctor's advice). I have been in the gym almost everyday for an hr on the treadmill and I'm down 15lbs so far. My doctor thinks I'm nuts for going back to work so soon, but I sit at a desk all day and I honestly have very little pain. I don't even use the pain meds. My only struggle is eating pureed foods for another week. My doctor skipped the liquid diet and put me straight to pureed foods. My starting weight was 280lbs and 1 week later I'm at 265lbs. I'm excited !! Just curious as to when others started noticing that a smaller wardrobe was needed?

    Five Month Post Op Stall

I feel you. I have read that a few week stall was normal. Most everyone seems to have them. I too went into a LONG stall at about 5 months out from surgery. Had surgery in May and the last time I really lost any good amount of weight was Oct. I stalled, then spoke to my nutritionist in Dec, made some adjustments then lost like 3.7 in January but haven't lost again since! That's like only a 3.7 lb loss in about 5 months!!!! CRAZY!! You MAY be able to explain your stall away because you have been indulging in foods more off plan (chips, diet soda, etc), but I haven't even been doing that! I have not had any other drink but for water since last March! But for the occasional alcoholic drink (like once a month). So yeah, your guess is as good as mine. You can read more about my issues (if you want) in my thread that I have going. Explains more about what has been happening, my exercise routine, etc. Hopefully you will get things moving again soon. Maybe cut out those foods and see if that helps? I also suggest speaking to your nutritionist. They may be able to help you get yourself back on track. Are you tracking your food?

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

Your workout routine is really intense. And that's a good thing. But... if you weren't very active before, it's extremely likely that you are gaining muscle, particularly since you are doing weight/resistance training. While that isn't going to explain away 50-60 lbs, it's probably worth spending a little bit of money (should be under US$50) to get a DEXA scan and see what your body fat percentage is, instead of using the BMI which is horribly inaccurate. Are you doing body measurements? That's probably a better gauge given your activity level than the scale. I still have 30-ish pounds to lose and have been bouncing around (just tiny bumps down every now and then), but I also suspect I have gained muscle since I do weight training four days a week—and the continued shrinking of my midsection despite the traitor scale's refusal to move means that I'm replacing fat with muscle. (I have a DEXA scan scheduled for mid-March to mark six months after surgery.)

Thank you all so much! I am moved by the support 💕 I just made a care.com account and found someone. She responded really fast and we spoke. She is OK with picking me up super early and picking me up after surgery. The hospital is a good drive but she does not mind. Today is my say day 1 of liquids surgery is next week! I hope this thread will help others. I'm new here too lol
