    First Denial

My insurance is great west - the letter from the insurance company i lacked the following: weight loss ; diet program for at least 6 mths within 2 yrs, monthly clinical from healthcare professional, trial of a behavior modification program, psychologial eval for this type of surgery, endocrine eval for obesity & post operative follow0up plan monthly for 6 months. I did have a psychologial eval for this so don't know what that is about.

    Does anyone know...

Hi Laura, Insurance is regulated by the states so the rules will vary depending on where you live. AS A RULE, though, group insurance provided by an employer cannot discriminate according to the employees' state of health. If you get a job you will be eligible for the employer's policy according to the terms of that policy. With individual insurance, though, all bets are off. The state of New Jersey has guaranteed-issue individual coverage, but not all states do. If your state underwrites individual plans according to health factors (like height and weight, prior conditions, etc.) you may not be eligible. THAT SAID: I firmly believe the existence of a Lap-Band should be considered like any other implant--it is not a medical condition and if you've lost weight, you may not any longer be morbidly obese (a category which may render one uninsurable, indeed). If anyone is denied insurance SOLELY for the reason of having a lap-band, I'd strongly suggest consulting a lawyer. There is no reason at all to think that the presence of a band will result in further health problems down the line, which would, theoretically, be the reason for denial.

    I'm BACK, & Banded !

Thanks. My Target size is 32-34. I was as big as 44-46. hieght is 5'10". My goal weight is 190-210. Right now its at 275 (lowest its been in 10 years). give or take 10lbs i've been hanging around the 300lbs mark. my Dad has 13 brothers and 3 sisters. I could pass for a brother to 7 of the boys just by when---- our hair line went up, our belt size grew , our hands started to hurt in the mornings and our ankles and knees began to give us grief. In a few years i have another 80lbs to look foward to comming around my waist. ALL of my Moms family is huge. the smallest one in her family is around 400lbs. So I have a lot of "genetics" going against me. But one of MY biggest problems is the size of meals i can eat. I'm the guy at the buffet bar that they dont want to see. (I've molested many buffet bars). 20 years ago I was a pro-bodybuilder. I know nutrition and I know how to exersize. And niether one of those two facts could stop my wieght gain. so now when i get start to hit the gym again in stead of a protien shake + Breakfast + a protien bar and then a snack, i'll be pleanty full with my drink. My goal isnt to have the body i did then (be nice) but the past is the past. I want to try to head of the diabeties and other things that run in my family, I Just want half the energy i did and the ability to run down into my field or fly upstairs in my house without getting so short winded my wife thinks i need medical attention, or feel like my chest is going to explode. when and if we have kids to be able to run and play with them and I want the extra years I'll gain by loosing the wieght to spend with my wife. so there it is. No this wasnt a rant against your question alex  . I just figured I'd lay it out there.

    I'm BACK, & Banded !

Hey Dog, congratulations!! Glad to hear things went smoothly and that you're already reaping the rewards of your travail. But I have to ask--how tall are you? My husband wears a 40 waist in pants and he may need to lose about 15 lbs. How much weight do you want to lose, and what size are you aiming for? Just curious--people are all different shapes and sizes I realize, but 38 sounds to me like a perfectly normal pants size.

    Goal weight?

  6. You and I had surgery at the same time Mine was 9-28-2010 I get disappointed too because I see people who had surgery about the same time or after and they've lost a ton of weight. The thing to remember is that everybody's journey is different. You are going to gain and lose weight. You shouldn't beat yourself up over it and pick yourself up and start again. You're getting fills which means that you want it to work. Let the past be the past and move forward. You'll get there! Julia

    paperwork question

my md's office did almost everything..i was just pushy and kept in contact with my insurance casemgr. i did not have have any supervised wt loss sessions..each insurance is different. most require a psych visit, documenation that shows you have tried many other methods and either succeeded and gained back frequently or were not able to lose the weight, dietitian visit, and my md dr Keith mcEwen in Noblesville, IN included an exercise physiologist, though it was not required. to me, picking the right surgeon was crucial! I would think your md's office will work on this. you can contact your insurance company and ask them what the stipulations are for you. deb
  8. I have never been a "Normal" weight in my life, and I have had a lot of people asking me what I want to get down to after my surgery. I honestly don't know. When I search average I see things anywhere from 135 to 162. I told one person I was thinking 150 and she said there would be nothing left of me,,, really???? I think she was a nay sayer because she went on to say why are you doing things, you have lost so much already and look great. I am like, look great at 225 pounds??? I am 5 foot three, I started this journey at 271, I am down to 220 and my surgery is tomorrow, any any ideas of what "normal" is?

    Average Weight???

I just go by my BMI range for my height and gender. I remember being 135 before I started gaining a lot. I also remember being excessively thin. I just think I look better on the heavier side, so I went for the safe 24.9 BMI. Once I get there, I'll see how I feel - whether or not I will lose a few more or try to gain a little back. I also need to remember that some of that weight will be loose skin, even though it doesn't seem it will be THAT bad... I do intend to get it resolved, so who knows how I'll feel?

    Stuck

Well count me as a another person who was sleeved in June and has hit a stall. I'm ok with it because it seems my body/skin is catching up to my weight loss since surgery. I was a little worried because I lost it so fast that my skin was getting pretty droopy and without losing this past week I'm noticing it start to tighten up. Just think, we are taking in so few calories our bodies can't hang onto it forever... if bodies could hang on to weight when they don't take in enough calories than there would be no such thing as a anorexia.

    Stuck

I only lost 26 pounds since the day I had surgery - but then again when I weighed myself 6 days after surgery I was up 6 pounds so it's 32 pounds. I'm 5 weeks out. I think our bodies also need to get to used to the "new stages". I am behind most people on the food stages, I just hit pureed phase Monday and I'm not doing as well with it because I guess I got used to liquids and Pureed is a little harder on my body. I'm suppose to hit soft foods come Sunday and it's causing me anxiety. Good luck, it will come off though, I promise you, and trust me as positive as I try to sound, I still cuss under my breath when I read the scale and see no drop. Since this morning the scale was moved out a bit (my husband likes to stub his toe on it in the bathroom - or my son moves it) I internally blame it on it being out of whack. Of course, there are days I am tempted to reweigh myself throughout the day, after a heavy exercise, but when I do I am normally frustrated because I seem to gain a pound after lots of exercise. I need to just weigh myself after the first morning piddle or throw away the scale or hide it. The thing I normally do when I have this issue is measure myself. Seeing the inches melt when I measure myself makes me feel so much better.

    Stuck

I am 5 weeks out and I'm doing one egg, a Protein Shake, with a little Isopure thrown in, 1.5 ounces of tuna and maybe a sugarf-free pudding and 1/2 cup of skim milk and I'm hitting about 400-450 calories a day and I been the same for a week. I have been walking 1-2 miles a day, water walking 1-2 hours a day and lifting weights or doing the gazelle. Yesterday I did the Firm interval training (not at the same impact as on the dvd) and I did not do the stomach exercises, plus swimming and I was up a pound today. I also am having issues going potty, though I started back on metamucil. It happens, not happy about it, I'm hoping that in the next day or two I'll experience the nice 3 pound drop that I have been getting accustomed to. I usually stay the same a few days, and then struggle up and down a pound then I have a significant 3 pound drop then go back to the same old same old. It seems my body is doing the same darn thing it was doing pre-surgery when I was on on the high protein- low carb. Eventually my body is going to have to let go because there is no natural way for me to maintain my weight on less than 460 calories a day.

    Countdown to a new me!

That's good news! My knees and back have been hurting worse and worse the last month or so. Not sure why but losing weight will surely help!
  14. For me they used the starting weight. What took it so long was someone trying to use the weight loss as going under BMI. My surgeons office fought for me stating the whole goal is to go under BMI and it was me being good on the diet they put me on that made that happen. Finally they gave in! That and my height difference. I have my pre op visit on Monday 12-19-16 but have no idea what will happen with that and the liver shrink diet. Hoping it's not a long process of waiting for the surgery and weeks of liquids. Ugh Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. Hi everyone, I am new to this site and I thank God it is here. I was banded on 5-29-09. and it has been a roller coaster ride. My first 2 weeks I lost 18 pounds and was very excited! Then the third week I have gained 4 pounds back and I am scared to death that I have done something wrong. I have to admit that I am having a hard time making myself stop eating when I feel "satisfied". I am working on it but it is the hardest thing I have ever done. Also, the last couple of days I have had a lot of indigestion and not sure why. Another thing since my surgery I can not burp? What is up with that? Any words of encouragement would be helpful. Thanks:wink2:

Kimmy.. I feel you.. go back to some of my old posts two months out and I swear people on the board were talking me off the ledge. I dont eat very much at all.. REALLY and my weight loss is slow. Im only down about 37 1lbs in 3 months but at least its down. Hang in there.. I know you must be disappointed but I wouldnt be surprised if you dropped 30 more in July since you are working out with a trainer and all. To be down 30 in two months is good. An average of 15lbs a month though you really only lost the first month. Keep up with your Water and exercise and I bet the lbs will start to melt away. It helped when my sister reminded me that I have always been a slow weight loser. When I was on Atkins, following it to a T without cheating, I was a slow loser. I used to think that I had some "metobolic resistence to weight loss".. Some Atkins term. Im just a slow loser. Hang in there.. Im pulling for you!
  17. the surgery itself is not bad, the only time i got sick was waking up the next morning (from anesthesia), but NO pain. good doctor... Dr. Ortiz I dropped 30 pounds within a month and haven't lost a pound since. I haven't felt restriction lately - and i'm starting to wonder if i busted a stitch or something... It has only been like 2 months for me so i guess if i keep losing ill be glad i did it, but if i don't lose anything else it will be the biggest $$$ mistake of my life!!! Highest weight 252 (November 2010) Surgery weight 234 (April 20 2011) Plication w. Dr. Ortiz Current weight 204 (June 17, 2011) nice to meet you guys! kim
  18. Hi everyone! My name is Krysta. I'm 27 years old and I'm new to this forum. My surgery is scheduled for 12/2/13 and I'm pretty nervous and excited at the same time. Like many people here, I've struggled with my weight for almost all of my life and it was this year that I've been at my heaviest (I'm currently 5'6 and 258lbs). I work out 3-4 days a week but I am an emotional eater. I currently am in therapy to help with this. I'm just really ready for 2014 to be my best year yet! I am currently in graduate school and will be graduating December 2014 and I am hoping by that time I'll be feeling and looking amazing
  19. Hello All. I am 8 weeks out from my surgery and down 30 pounds. I hit a stall my third week. I am doing everything by the book, food, water, iron, protien....Problem is, I started to bloat at week 4, and they said the surgeon said this is normal, especially with the higher temps. I increased the water from 64 oz. to 80-100 oz., and did see abit of difference in water retention, but the swelling is still there. Mostly in my calves and top of my feet. Here's the other thing, and pardon me for being graphic and giving TMI, but I have had my period since June 17th. My surgery was on May 31st. I am 47 years old, (PRE-SURGERY WEIGHT:379)and my periods were like clockwork before the surgery. Maybe Menopause? I can't seem to get an answer. I went to my regular doctor for the swelloing and she is afraid to give me anything for it (Lasix) because she does not want to knock my system out of whack. This last week, my period has been so heavy, it's a wonder I am not passing out. But I feel fine.Already had the pap and all that pre-surgery, so I am not worried there. Has anyone, my age or any age, had this problem post surgery? I just read that fat has lots of hormones, and when I dropped 30lbs., my estrogen went nuts. Help!!!!!!! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also, has anyone else hit a 5 week stall? I am about to go crazy. Eaing like a bird and not losing weight. Thanks all.

    Ketosis

I don't get along with the ketosis concept, but as the OPs doc suggested, it may accelerate the weight loss. For me, it's not worth the downsides to get to goal in six months rather than seven, assuming that it works as advertised. We are malnourished enough as it is with the limited volume and high protein requirements without adding the ultra low carb restriction to it as well. If I were starting out heavier and needed every trick in the book to get to goal, then it might be worthwhile. At this point, I seem to work better with a reasonable amount of complex carb in my diet, burning more calories with longer and more intense workouts, than when keeping lower carb. But we are all different in how we respond to these things - try the low carb/ketosis diet and see how it works, but don't be afraid to go to a more balanced diet if it doesn't do much for you.
  21. I know it seems long but right now I have no interest in eating. I want to lose weight. I am not craving anything and I feel great. This is the first time in my life I have not been hungry. I figure that I want to give my stomach time to heal properly. The food will always be there. I'm in no rush. When I left my 1 week post op visit. My doctor said to me it's up to you now. You can make it or break it. I told him I was going to makebik. I don't want to let him down!

    What's up with this insurance?

Weight Watchers won't count as a medically supervised diet, and shouldn't count, because it's not medically supervised. Medically supervised means that you are going to a physician for the sole purpose of weight management, in which case you will have a lot of medical paperwork to back you up (even when the physician refers you to a dietician). A lot of people think having gone to the doctor in the last 6 months, and have a record with their weight on it, will satisfy this requirement but unfortunately they find it does not. In fact, believe many insurance companies look for specific coding related to treatment of morbid/obesity. I understand what you're going through. You've made up your mind and want an instant reward. I don't know too many people who haven't been there in some way or another. I was very glad when I learned I didn't need the 6 mos (assumed I would), but looking back -- it's really not a bad requirement to have in place.

    Your top ten reasons

Hi Everybody! This board is an inspiration for me and although I do not regualarly post, I read often. Here are my top ten reasons to loose the weight: 10. To be able to shop for clothes in places other than Lane Bryant and Avenue or the "Women's Department". 9. To be able to dress with confidence. 8. To build my self-esteem. 7. To not have to take blood pressure meds for the rest of my life. 6. To not get Type II Diabetes like my Big Mama did. 5. To not get heart disease like my grandfather did. 4. To wear a swim suit on vacation. 3. To be a better example to the students I serve. 2. To improve my quality of life. 1. To be a better steward of this temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells!
