    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi! April 19 vsg here! Very nervous about the 2 week pre op diet and managing that while returning to work after 2 years working at home. Wondering how long most of you are taking off from work after your procedure?
  2. I thought the same but it is much easier than I thought. I think you do have to allow yourself to have what you crave every now and then other wise you will drive yourself crazy and binge. For example I allow myself a coke and chocolate every other day (small portions) and last week I wanted it everyday but this week I have have only fleeting thoughts about consuming those foods/drinks and not had any. once you get into the habit of making better choices it gets easier.
  3. I wish i could break up with food. I'm almost 2 weeks post RYGBP and i find myself having cravings that ive never had before. Im craving all kinds of unhealthy food like french fries, fast food, pasta, candy, etc. i did not have these cravings pre op and it was always fairly easy to avoid these types of pitfalls. Im not saying i ate perfectly pre op but portion control was my biggest downfall, not necessarily what was being consumed. i haven't lost my taste for anything apparently. I haven't given in and tried all things i want because im still so soon post op but i hope this stops quickly because its really hard to have a protein shake when all i want are french fries. Anybody know of french fry flavored protein shakes? Lol how long did it take for people's taste to change?

    January sleevers

I'm 5 weeks out as of yesterday and I have protein shakes in the morning and afternoon (Fairlife also), then a Light & Fit yogurt for snack mid morning (80 cal, 12g protein). For lunch and dinner, I've eaten a variety of things... Started with flaky types of fish and over the last week have tried different kinds of meat. I successfully ate pulled pork, shredded chicken, and 2 tiny beef meatballs. I added sugar-free BBQ sauce if it seemed like it might be too dry. I ate some canned green beans and zucchini. I eat unsweetened apple sauce every once in awhile. Today for lunch, I had 2 oz of turkey deli meat, a slice of fresh mozzarella cheese, and 5 cheez it crackers (chewed well). Tonight I plan to have some kind of seafood with peas and carrots. My husband grilled some chicken last night and it was tougher than what I had been eating and I didn't enjoy having to chew each bite a gazillion times to make it soft. So I'm sticking with the softer meats for a bit. I haven't had any issues or tummy trouble at all thank goodness! I am going to stay away from any raw vegetables like lettuce for awhile as I heard those can be harder to digest?

    Emotions on high post op?

Hey! I'm 2 weeks post op and I def feel this. I think there's a big hormonal change, like I didn't get my period this month either. I am in and out of a weird daze/depression and I miss feeling normal. I think it'll go away as we heal and our routines become more normal but I definitely feel like my emotions are off. I'm not even particularly happy. I've lost like 19 lbs post op and don't really care because I dont feel physically good. But, I just need to keep telling myself that this is a temporary state. At some point,, I believe it becomes normal again. What type of feelings/emotions are you experiencing? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. So I’m almost 5 weeks post op, I’m down 41lbs including my 2 week pre-op. I have moved to soft foods stage 4 in my plan. Egg salad, scrambled eggs, cheese sticks, chili, still eating soups and I have now added fluke, and cod to the menu. I’m able to take in about 3-4oz of the fish, 2 scrambled eggs, a cup of soup(doesn’t matter which type, also not eating chix if chix soup and so on) I drink a protein shake almost every day(fair life 150 cal 30g protein) and I’m now back at the gym treadmill 30-40 min both incline and non inclined and I started with the weights(not heavy) I feel my stomach is probably healed at this point as my acid reflux has gone away since eating some real food. I do take an acid reducer in the morning as prescribed by my Dr. Also getting in my b12, multi and calcium vitamins almost regularly. Is anyone else eating anything else?? When can I eat a salad? I do get about 64 oz of water and tea how is everyone else doing???
  7. Hello everyone! I am a 32 year old woman currently about 3 weeks post op and honestly, I am just really emotional. I feel as if there is a lot of feelings surfacing since the surgery. Anybody else feel the same way?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So, we're in about the same boat. I'm down 83lbs in 3 months and 10 days. Still going in the right direction, even if slowing down. Hitting between 6500 and 9000 steps per day at this point ... that about an hour of walking daily after work. Mixing in band exercises while at the office and while walking. The diet is still fairly clean, especially during the work week.... though I did allow myself a piece of toast today. Only lost 1.8 lbs this week, but a loss is a loss. I had ...probably an unrealistic goal, to reach -100 by my March 17 doctor appointment. Looking like it will be closer to -90. Which of course is still fantastic! Wearing clothes that I haven't been able to wear in a while. Need to break down and buy a couple pairs of salvation army pants soon... as it is I have to wear shorts under my pants to keep them up! Lol. I'm thinking about starting some weight training soon. I know there are different camps on this idea but I want to counter some of the loose skin by building some tone. I'll likely see the scale slow even further but I need to realize that the redistribution of weight is there. Looking forward to the next -17!
  9. I understand your struggle I am 3 weeks post op I tried to take Bariatric Fushion chewables they were the worst things ever. I also decided at that point just to stick to pills so I ordered Bariatric Fushion multivitamin 1 a day. I will just have to add a calcium chew along with it. It has been hard for me to drink protein shakes I believe it is a mental thing. I tried last week and it came right back up. I will try again in a couple of days. I didn’t like premier either you should try fairlife they are not thick like protein shakes and don’t have that nasty after taste.

    Fruits

I wasn't allowed to eat fruit that had skins or seeds for the first few weeks (strawberries definitely have seeds) - but like others have said, check with your plan. Plans can vary...

    After Surgery

Congrats on getting your surgery date. Whoo hoo! What people eat at each phase depends on the plan their surgeon & dietician put them on. Most seem to be on purées for weeks 3 & 4. Think baby food, thick gloopy liquids. You can purée most proteins with gravy, broth, stock, milk, etc. to get the solid food liquidy enough. But you may find your tummy is a bit fussy & your tastebuds can be sensitive making things taste pretty awful so it can be a bit hit & miss but it passes. I blended up tinned salmon & tuna but it was disgusting. Eggs were good - scrambled, poached, or mashed boiled with Mayo. I also made slow cooked soups with meat & vegetables & blended well. I could have yoghurt which I ate every day & instant rolled oats made extra milky. But don’t worry if you struggle moving to the next food phase. Some need a couple extra days on the previous stage. We all heal & recover differently. Have a chat with your surgeon about what to expect post surgery & what you should be aware of or watch for with your surgery. Generally generally you can expect gas pain (they inflate your abdomen during surgery so they can see the operating field). It distends your tummy & stretches muscles & then has to escape your body - walking a little often helps as does Gas X - but it could take up to a week to dissipate. Surgical pain is generally managed with meds & many find by day 4 it’s greatly diminished to just general discomfort. Remember no NSAIDS. You may be swollen & have difficulty swallowing fir a couple of days. You may have diarrhoea &/or constipation. You won’t be able to lift anything over 10lbs +/- for a couple of weeks. You may not be hungry or interested in eating. You may be nauseous again meds help so ask for some if you need them. Sip slowly & sip often - stay hydrated. Take it easy & listen to your body. If it says rest, rest. Try some electrolyte drinks to give you a boost of energy if you feel you need it. Don’t be afraid to contact your medical team if you don’t feel well, pain persist or isn’t managed by your prescribed pain meds. It all gets way easier as you progress. All the best.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Late to this group and got operated in September 2021. Starting weight was 330 lbs (152 kg) and the current weight is 264 lbs (120 kg) and down to waist size 44 from 50, which is good. In the middle of a long stall (around 5 weeks where I have not lost weight and gained and lost a few 100 grms). I do have some improvement areas and not a big fan of running or protein shakes, though I try to make some of it up with eggs and chicken but not enough I would guess. waiting for my 6 month post-op blood tests. I still believe I am another 70-80 lbs away from where I would like to be and hopefully the weight loss will start back sooner rather than later, but I am a bit worried with the length of the stall. DO look forward to hearing more positive outcomes to help inspire myself. Cheers

    Am I eating too much?

At 8 weeks I wasn’t eating 1/2 cup. Two scrambled eggs would take three days to eat. But we are different & there are a lot of different plans some which encourage you to eat more than what I did. Hopefully your dietician will get back to you with more specifics around portion size, etc. which will best suit you. You do need to work at eating more slowly & taking small bites. Use smaller cutlery (I used a teaspoon for ages). Put your cutlery down between bites & wait a couple of minutes before taking the next. Distract yourself if needed. Have a conversation with your family between bites. Read a page, wait for an ad break, play a game of solitaire or sudoku online, listen to a song between bites or whatever. I still take ages to eat 30 - 60 minutes is usual depending upon what I’m eating. Remember it takes time for that message you’re full or had enough to get through & often by the time you feel full you’ve eaten more & are actually more than full. All the best.

    5'6" 217lbs getting sleeve surgery

I am 5'6" and weighed in at 214 on the day of my sugery 2 1/2 weeks ago. I, too, was skinnier when I was younger. Over the past 5 years or so, I gained weight and could NOT lose any weight no matter what I tried. After the gastric sleeve 2 1/2 weeks ago, I am already down to 198. This is such a gift! It's not easy, but it's so worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat. This is changing my life!!!!![emoji173][emoji173][emoji173][emoji173] I know, you too, will love it!!!!!![emoji173][emoji173][emoji173][emoji173] Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    After Surgery

Hey everyone, I have some exciting news, I got approved for gastric bypass this past Monday and, my surgery date is next month on the 22nd. I was just wondering what kinds of exercises that you guys have done and that you've had success in achieving also, I do have PCOS so I was just wondering for my fellow cysters how much weight have you guys lost in 2-12 months and what was your weight loss each month. I was also wondering what types of food did you guys eat after 2 weeks like what could you guys tolerate and, very lastly what can I expect before, during, and after my surgery?
  20. Not shaving my legs for a week? Yikes. I’d be booking in for waxing the week before. 😆. I had to use an anti bacterial wash the night before my surgery too & wash my hair with it. Bit drying on the skin & then couldn't moisturise. Didn’t have to with my gall removal 2yrs later though 🤷🏻‍♀️ Sounds like you’re doing well so far - congrats.

    Food Woes

Hello, I had Gastric Bypass on November 23, 2021. I've lost 55 lbs since then and I'm quite proud of that... Is that a normal amount to lose? I've been walking every day and doing yoga when I can... I bought an elliptical but I dont use it as often as I would like.... I keep plateauing. I lost 5 lbs two weeks ago while I was traveling and then now im plateauing again My mom says its because I'm eating English muffin (up to one per day) with cream cheese.... or quesadilla... She says im not getting good enough protein in. I still can't eat many things without vomiting still so I feel I dont have many options. What do you eat? I do also have shrimp sometimes after work or scallops... I can eat out having like kungpao chicken... broth soup... mussels/clams.... but at home I am having a hard time determining good food. 😕 Thank you B
