    When the lights go out

Awesome awesome awesome words! I, too, have seen the switch flip in people's eyes when I talk about the fact that I am going to get banded. They do not understand the road ahead of me. They think the weight is going to melt off by magic. They do not realize that I am still going to have to deal with pain in my ankles as I begin my walking routine, or that I will still have cravings (head hunger) to overcome, or that I will possibly have limits and no longer be able to handle a few of the foods that I love, or that I will have to be in and out of the doctors office for fills (and maybe unfills), or deal with being "stuck" or "sliming" or "pbing". I have just basically quit telling people unless they ask, which means that someone gossip has passed the word along.

    Help

Benson, I posted the following response to this question on your other thread as well, but I just found this one so I will post it here, too: Well, what do you think happens when you lose weight? Your skin is loose. A few people do not need plastic surgery. But then again, you do not HAVE to have PS, you can just wear girdles if need be. There is no way to tighten SKIN. You can tighten underlying muscle with exercise, and that may make skin look better. Some people gained their weight evenly all over their bodies and didn't stretch their skin too much in one area. No one can predict what will happen after you have lost the weight. I know I will need PS, no way to avoid it with 200lbs to lose. With a BMI of 38, you might not need much, but only time will tell. But you know what? I'm not going to worry about that now. What's the point? Would I stay fat just to avoid possible PS? That would be idiotic. I have already told myself that when I get within about 40 lbs of whatever goal I decide, I have to be there for at least one year before I get PS. I want to see what my body will do on it's own. Then that gives me a year to investigate surgeons and save money. Just work on the now. The Band is the first step in a long journey.

    Keto/Low Carb

I don't think it makes a difference, in the end so long as you have a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. Though it *may* take a little longer this far out. In maintenance, I had a couple times when I gained like 5-6 lbs after a period of eating too much or a period of decreased activity. The first time this happened was maybe 11 mnths post op and it took me a week to lose it. The last time it happened, it took me almost 2 months (at almost 2 yrs post op). It was much easier to go low cal before than it is now, probably cuz I'm used to eating more now? Anyhoo, its not impossible, Keto/low carb or not. Good Luck!

    Not enough restriction?

Good point, TjiunaPlication, about putting work in. Reading this forum, the ones who focus on the protein first and rarely eat white carbs loose the most weight. Of course we would all figure that..but some who have VSG seem to have trouble eating any junk food..they must eat only good stuff or they feel sick. Sometimes it can be scary if it is too easy to cheat. But anyone can make the most of their powerfull tool or consume around their power tool. Sarah, I hope you can have a barium test and resolve your most disappointing problem. We send our support and regards.

    Who DOESN'T Get Approved?

I can't imagine why that would rule you out. When you decide on a weight loss center that's going to help you find your package deal in Mexico, (that's the route I'm taking) they send you a form to fill out. Be as honest as you can so that the surgeon can help you the very best possible way. Believe me, they have probably seen it all. The doctor I have, has done over 2,500 surgeries. Find one with experience. Good luck to you!

    Week 1 - weigh-in

That is great cknorte, keep up the good work. I'm so proud of you. I just found out I have to lose 10 pounds on a supervised diet before my surger so I'm joining weight watchers next week. I hope those 10 pounds come off fast, but to me now ten pounds seems like a 100. lol

    slow weight loss

Sorry! That has to be very frustrating. When I lost w the lapband my weight loss was very slow. I did eventually end up losing 110 pounds but it took me over 3 years. I think with the sleeve and plication the body thinks it's starving and tries to retain everything, fluid and food. You've gotten good advice. Even though you might be losing slower - you are losing. 2 pounds per week! Just think in less than a year you will have lost 100 pounds! Take care, genepha

    slow weight loss

Hey there! Yes, the first few weeks after GPS - my weight loss dropped to about 1 or 2 lbs per week. But important question for the original poster - are you able to eat much less than prior to the surgery? If yes - than I wouldn't worry. Take that 1 or 2 lbs per week and after several months, and much weight will come off. I just hit 5 months and I am 41 lbs lighter! I am happy about that although I was a bit miffed during the first two months, but I would much rather have the weight come off at a more "normal rate." I know we all spent a lot of money - but try to stay positive and look at the long term, k? As long as you are able to have a small appetite and are exercising a bit - I think you are on the right track! Best wishes!
  9. Just hit my 8 weeks post op! But I'm getting nervous because I'm starting to feel hunger again. And starting to eat 3 meals, small Of course, a day. I'm so nervous to gain any weight. I feel as though I've already stretched my Pouch bc I have made some bad choices in my diet. Help! Did anyone else feel like this?

    new poster sick

@chris1985 hey dude/aka newbie!!! I agree @Diana_in_Philly - eating too fast is very bad. you must slllllow it down. chew into small bites, THEN swallow. No gulping allowed!! (people have been shot for less!!) use small (baby) utensils, that will help FORCE you to eat slowly. put utensil down between bites. then start again with eating. DON'T drink any water while you are eating anything! don't drink 30 minutes before you eat, then wait 30 minutes after you eat til you drink. find a support group in your area. (doc should help you/or office) maybe you could make a friend, then you can help each other. this board is very helpful, informative. continue to ask your questions, you'll there are bariatric books with recipes too. one example is Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies lots of information on various web sites!! KNOWLEDGE is POWER!! Good luck - kathy

    Scared?

I was afraid of that. Other times I lost weight, my stomach would go first. I'll definitely be doing the squat challenge

Hello all I haven't posted any questions on here but I have been reading for several months!! My paper work was submitted to my insurance, and I find out that they didn't approve it because I have to have 12 months of attempted weight loss but the dr who was going to do the vsg said bcbs only requires 3 months. So now I'm sad I was hoping to be scheduling my surgery. I've had an active membership at curves for 14 months and a 6 month doctor supervised diet so is there not anyway for my 14 months of working out to be my proof of attempted weight loss? Or do I have to do another 6 months of dieting and waiting? Any advice would help!!

    First Denial

My insurance is great west - the letter from the insurance company i lacked the following: weight loss ; diet program for at least 6 mths within 2 yrs, monthly clinical from healthcare professional, trial of a behavior modification program, psychologial eval for this type of surgery, endocrine eval for obesity & post operative follow0up plan monthly for 6 months. I did have a psychologial eval for this so don't know what that is about.

    Does anyone know...

Hi Laura, Insurance is regulated by the states so the rules will vary depending on where you live. AS A RULE, though, group insurance provided by an employer cannot discriminate according to the employees' state of health. If you get a job you will be eligible for the employer's policy according to the terms of that policy. With individual insurance, though, all bets are off. The state of New Jersey has guaranteed-issue individual coverage, but not all states do. If your state underwrites individual plans according to health factors (like height and weight, prior conditions, etc.) you may not be eligible. THAT SAID: I firmly believe the existence of a Lap-Band should be considered like any other implant--it is not a medical condition and if you've lost weight, you may not any longer be morbidly obese (a category which may render one uninsurable, indeed). If anyone is denied insurance SOLELY for the reason of having a lap-band, I'd strongly suggest consulting a lawyer. There is no reason at all to think that the presence of a band will result in further health problems down the line, which would, theoretically, be the reason for denial.

    I'm BACK, & Banded !

Thanks. My Target size is 32-34. I was as big as 44-46. hieght is 5'10". My goal weight is 190-210. Right now its at 275 (lowest its been in 10 years). give or take 10lbs i've been hanging around the 300lbs mark. my Dad has 13 brothers and 3 sisters. I could pass for a brother to 7 of the boys just by when---- our hair line went up, our belt size grew , our hands started to hurt in the mornings and our ankles and knees began to give us grief. In a few years i have another 80lbs to look foward to comming around my waist. ALL of my Moms family is huge. the smallest one in her family is around 400lbs. So I have a lot of "genetics" going against me. But one of MY biggest problems is the size of meals i can eat. I'm the guy at the buffet bar that they dont want to see. (I've molested many buffet bars). 20 years ago I was a pro-bodybuilder. I know nutrition and I know how to exersize. And niether one of those two facts could stop my wieght gain. so now when i get start to hit the gym again in stead of a protien shake + Breakfast + a protien bar and then a snack, i'll be pleanty full with my drink. My goal isnt to have the body i did then (be nice) but the past is the past. I want to try to head of the diabeties and other things that run in my family, I Just want half the energy i did and the ability to run down into my field or fly upstairs in my house without getting so short winded my wife thinks i need medical attention, or feel like my chest is going to explode. when and if we have kids to be able to run and play with them and I want the extra years I'll gain by loosing the wieght to spend with my wife. so there it is. No this wasnt a rant against your question alex  . I just figured I'd lay it out there.

    I'm BACK, & Banded !

Hey Dog, congratulations!! Glad to hear things went smoothly and that you're already reaping the rewards of your travail. But I have to ask--how tall are you? My husband wears a 40 waist in pants and he may need to lose about 15 lbs. How much weight do you want to lose, and what size are you aiming for? Just curious--people are all different shapes and sizes I realize, but 38 sounds to me like a perfectly normal pants size.

    Goal weight?

the doc told me i should be about 130 and thats my goal weight i am 5 2
  18. You and I had surgery at the same time Mine was 9-28-2010 I get disappointed too because I see people who had surgery about the same time or after and they've lost a ton of weight. The thing to remember is that everybody's journey is different. You are going to gain and lose weight. You shouldn't beat yourself up over it and pick yourself up and start again. You're getting fills which means that you want it to work. Let the past be the past and move forward. You'll get there! Julia

    paperwork question

my md's office did almost everything..i was just pushy and kept in contact with my insurance casemgr. i did not have have any supervised wt loss sessions..each insurance is different. most require a psych visit, documenation that shows you have tried many other methods and either succeeded and gained back frequently or were not able to lose the weight, dietitian visit, and my md dr Keith mcEwen in Noblesville, IN included an exercise physiologist, though it was not required. to me, picking the right surgeon was crucial! I would think your md's office will work on this. you can contact your insurance company and ask them what the stipulations are for you. deb
  20. I have never been a "Normal" weight in my life, and I have had a lot of people asking me what I want to get down to after my surgery. I honestly don't know. When I search average I see things anywhere from 135 to 162. I told one person I was thinking 150 and she said there would be nothing left of me,,, really???? I think she was a nay sayer because she went on to say why are you doing things, you have lost so much already and look great. I am like, look great at 225 pounds??? I am 5 foot three, I started this journey at 271, I am down to 220 and my surgery is tomorrow, any any ideas of what "normal" is?

    Average Weight???

I just go by my BMI range for my height and gender. I remember being 135 before I started gaining a lot. I also remember being excessively thin. I just think I look better on the heavier side, so I went for the safe 24.9 BMI. Once I get there, I'll see how I feel - whether or not I will lose a few more or try to gain a little back. I also need to remember that some of that weight will be loose skin, even though it doesn't seem it will be THAT bad... I do intend to get it resolved, so who knows how I'll feel?

    Stuck

Well count me as a another person who was sleeved in June and has hit a stall. I'm ok with it because it seems my body/skin is catching up to my weight loss since surgery. I was a little worried because I lost it so fast that my skin was getting pretty droopy and without losing this past week I'm noticing it start to tighten up. Just think, we are taking in so few calories our bodies can't hang onto it forever... if bodies could hang on to weight when they don't take in enough calories than there would be no such thing as a anorexia.

    Stuck

I only lost 26 pounds since the day I had surgery - but then again when I weighed myself 6 days after surgery I was up 6 pounds so it's 32 pounds. I'm 5 weeks out. I think our bodies also need to get to used to the "new stages". I am behind most people on the food stages, I just hit pureed phase Monday and I'm not doing as well with it because I guess I got used to liquids and Pureed is a little harder on my body. I'm suppose to hit soft foods come Sunday and it's causing me anxiety. Good luck, it will come off though, I promise you, and trust me as positive as I try to sound, I still cuss under my breath when I read the scale and see no drop. Since this morning the scale was moved out a bit (my husband likes to stub his toe on it in the bathroom - or my son moves it) I internally blame it on it being out of whack. Of course, there are days I am tempted to reweigh myself throughout the day, after a heavy exercise, but when I do I am normally frustrated because I seem to gain a pound after lots of exercise. I need to just weigh myself after the first morning piddle or throw away the scale or hide it. The thing I normally do when I have this issue is measure myself. Seeing the inches melt when I measure myself makes me feel so much better.

    Stuck

I am 5 weeks out and I'm doing one egg, a Protein Shake, with a little Isopure thrown in, 1.5 ounces of tuna and maybe a sugarf-free pudding and 1/2 cup of skim milk and I'm hitting about 400-450 calories a day and I been the same for a week. I have been walking 1-2 miles a day, water walking 1-2 hours a day and lifting weights or doing the gazelle. Yesterday I did the Firm interval training (not at the same impact as on the dvd) and I did not do the stomach exercises, plus swimming and I was up a pound today. I also am having issues going potty, though I started back on metamucil. It happens, not happy about it, I'm hoping that in the next day or two I'll experience the nice 3 pound drop that I have been getting accustomed to. I usually stay the same a few days, and then struggle up and down a pound then I have a significant 3 pound drop then go back to the same old same old. It seems my body is doing the same darn thing it was doing pre-surgery when I was on on the high protein- low carb. Eventually my body is going to have to let go because there is no natural way for me to maintain my weight on less than 460 calories a day.
