3 weeks post-revision and terrified
Butterflyeffect replied to LG202108's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am assuming you are only a few weeks out from surgery (sorry couldn’t see your surgery date anywhere), in which case I felt weak and dizzy until I was able to eat between 600 to 700 calories a day, but I was told by my doctor not to exercise, except for walking, until the 3 month mark. Your body is still healing and just needs time. As you can eat more, it should get better. The only advice I can give is to track everything you are eating, if you aren’t already, to make sure you are getting enough protein, hitting your water target and taking your vitamins. Good luck and look forward to hearing about your revision journey. -
My bmi was 29 13 wks ago (band revision) and I lost about 16 lbs the 1st 10 wks. The lower u weigh, the slower u will lose. Not sure 39 is considered a lo bmi, btw. Btw, I'm now 13 wks and have lost 18 total lbs. Wow. I'm embarrassed to even write that, seeing the massice amts people lose on this site.

What do you tell ppl at work?
DecemberSleeve replied to silhouette's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am a lapband survivor too - and I think that is a reason why I have chosen not to tell anyone about my sleeve revision. It was kind of embarrassing to face the people who knew I had the lap-band when I regained weight after the slippage and unfill. I don't want to deal with any scrutiny or questions this time. When asking for the time off, I chose to be vague about needing medical care and needing to be out of the office. I do not feel anyone is entitled to more detailed info about my health than that. After all, if I was having a gynecologic surgery or hemorrhoids removed, I probably wouldn't want to tell the people at work details about those kinds of surgeries either, so people should know better than to pry. If people ask about the weight loss I'll just say that I am eating smaller portions and being more active (which is true after surgery for most of us after all). I had my sleeve revision Dec 29th and I am returning to work tomorrow (Jan 3rd). I do feel ready for it, thank goodness (the first two days after surgery were really tough but I felt significantly better after that and each day has been better since). My job isn't extremely physical though, and I was fortunate enough to not have any complications that made recovery slower. -
Is My Potential Surgeon Right

So I have been taking all of your words to heart....Absorbing....listening...thinking. I decided to go to Dr. Keshishian's website at around 7:30 pm last night...I kept reading about revisions and his name kept coming up. I filled out the form on his site...including the copies of my insurance card and writing about my experience...my sense of failure. It's unfortunate that there is a lot of negativity when it comes to a person asking about a second surgical procedure..... At 7:50 pm -- on a Sunday night -- my phone rang. Guess who? Dr. Keshishian himself. I cried. He asked why I was crying....I told him that I felt like a failure but had also heard he is one of the best at revisions. He told me "It's not your fault"....explained the statistics and gave me more hope that I could ever imagined. We talked for about 15 minutes and he then said I would hear from someone in his ofc in a couple of days. If this is ANY indication of what kind of man Dr. K is -- and if I am blessed to get a surgery approved by TriCare -- I will get my life back. So instead of "no", "you can't", "it's your fault", the information I received from one of the top revision doctors in the country was positive, caring and factual. Soo.... Never say never...Always have hope and do not go quietly into the good night. I've annoyed a lot of people in my life by me being an overachiever...and this will be no different. I will bust my butt to make it happen and stay with it. God bless those of you who gave me his name. He is less than 45 miles from my home so I can go there easily. Fingers crossed. May all your dreams come true. M -
Is My Potential Surgeon Right
APRPro4U replied to APRPro4U's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi Vic, Thx for your input. It is genuinely appreciated. The reason I mention my education & successes is because many doctors (and some other professionals) talk down to obese patients. There is SOME TIMES (this is not an overarching statement) a sense that fat = stupid. We all know that is not true. With my JD, I am at least as educated as my -- no longer -- doctor so being honest and explaining his lack of expertise with revisions would have been accepted had he been forthright. My insurance will pay for a revision because there seems to be at least two indicators that there was a problem with the original. Further, the insurance I have now was not the one I had 9 years ago. Regarding ethics, while my former doctor might have some, I will be reporting him tomorrow to TriCare Prime. He is NOT allowed to ask for $500 to $3,500 in addition to the fee the insurance gives him for the surgery. That IS unethical and against the guidelines of many insurance policies. Second, I pride myself on my soft skills and I would NEVER talk to a client about my financial issues. It's simply inappropriate. If he is not getting enough from TriCare or other insurance companies, he shouldn't accept them. That's a simple business decision. I continue to enjoy the give and take of information here even when I disagree. This is truly social media at its best. M -
Is My Potential Surgeon Right
MelindaH replied to APRPro4U's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi APR, Hon, I agree with the previous poster that your surgical options are few. And I reallly am sorry that good medicine dictates that. However, I would get a second or even third opinion until you are satisfied that you are being told the truth. I totally agree with you that the MD discussing his payment by your insurance company is totally over the top and inappropriate. That is what a insurance specialist is for. He, individually, and/ or his practice signed a contract with Tri-Care or whatever insurance you have to provide safe medical services for patients regardless of your stature in life. If your insurance is tricare call them and ask them where the revision specialists are. I do know and have been told that the weight loss with the band is considerably slower than with the other procedures. But it will not lose the weight for me. I have to follow the program and exercise. I have not done that this week well but tomorrow is a new day and I am still preop. You are right there is probably more to your story than we know at this time. I sense that there is a lot of pain and am only suggesting counseling as I have benefitted from it enormously over my life. I sincerely wish you all the best. Melinda -
I will be the first to start

I would run my friend Sue used him and almost died, he left a sponge in her. I think Tijuana is perfectly safe but after almost losing her it opened my eyes to making sure I pick the right doctor and a well equipped facility. I just was denied for the third time by insurance and so I have in my mind struck out and have to look at Mexico. I am going to go about this in a different way then how I started before. My life is very important and so here is how I am now going to do my research. 1. If I am paying out of my pocket then I want a real hospital not a clinic like my friend had. 2. I want my own private room and bathroom. If I have to share then what other corners are they cutting. 3. I want to see an ICU where I am going. You know some of these clinics say they have an ICU when it is really the OR. Not good if it is in use when your in trouble. 4. I want a doctor who only does 3-4 surgeries a day. 5. I know everyone has complications so I want the coordinator to be truthful not fill me with a line of BS that is not true to get my money. 6. I want a doctor who is going to do the right procedure for me and not what I think I want. If I need a by-pass and not a sleeve then be truthful. Don't do the bypass for more money do it me and my quality of life after. I can only afford to do this once I cant afford a revision. The doctor your talking about has a hate. I just want a good doctor with a real hospital and I want real results for my real hard earned dollars. -

How do I join the revisionistas group?

I'm having trouble getting real feedback on what to expect from a VSG to RNY revision. I'm thinking this group my be helpful? -
I think that the band slip rate is much higher than the doctors tell you. I have connected with many bandsters via YouTube and FaceBook, and way too many of us have had lap band slips and needed revision surgery. I had a slip that required revision surgery, and I am pretty good at following the rules. However, I kept my band after the slip (and simply had it repositioned) because I love my lap band. The one thing that has helped tremendously is having a doctor that does fills under fluroscopy - that way you have a better chance of not being too tight (band filled too much), which can lead to a slip. My doctor got a fluro machine after my first slip, and I no longer get fills without fluro. Good luck!

I Was All Ready To Go...now Scared And Confused.

I had a band to sleeve revision with Dr. Aceves in June 2011. I do not regret my decision one bit. Weeks before surgery I had an upper GI done here in the states in which I emailed all this to Dr. Aceves prior to surgery. The day before surgery Dr. Aceves did another one to check out my band and they made sure my bad was completely deflated. I was warned in advance that in most cases they can do the revision in 1 surgery but if Dr. Aceves feels that the band has done to much damage he will not move forward and do the sleeve. I know someone personally that this happened to. Leaks can happen with any doctor. Leaks are more common in revision patients too since the scar tissue is not strong in the area where the band was removed. The band leaves a mess behind since this device has pretty much become a part of your stomach. These are the risks that you take going into surgery, and there are risks involoved with any surgery. I could have gone to a doc here in the states. I chose Dr. A because of his experience and very low complication rate. I knew that with the band I was more at risk for leaks so I wanted to make sure that I chose the most skilled surgeon there was. In the event that you would get a leaks weeks after surgery, why don't you ask Nina at Dr. Aceves office if there are any doctors in your area that Dr. Aceves would recommend that would agree to care for you post op. Otherwise if you don't feel comfortable with that, then I would suggest just going with the doc in your hometown. Either way, you really have to go with your gut feeling and do what you believe is the best option for you. Best of luck to you either way! -
Hi all! I've had the lapband since 2008. I'm hoping for a revision to the bypass. Does anyone who has had gerd with the band and have had the bypass still get severe heartburn?

I did not use almanza, I hear he is a great surgeon but does many in one day and I've heard the hospital is not the best. Please search him and Jerusalem hospital on here to get first hand experience. My dr's were cheaper then him and the hospital is top notch and so was the hotel. I guess my point is, there is other options priced as good or better then almanza. Revision 1/31/13 by Dr Cabrera and Venezuela in MX

Greeting, everyone! Long story short, my first band was placed in 2008 when I was 260lbs. I lost 90lbs, was miserable physically, and had it removed because it slipped in April 2013 weighing about 180lbs. 2nd band was placed in August of 2013, and removed (again, slip) in March 2016, weighing 190lbs. After that band was removed I couldn't stop gaining weight and found out I was severely hypothyroid. Since then my TSH levels are normal (taking Synthroid) and I am 250lbs and not responding to diet/exercise. For example, on a one month strict no carb diet, I gained 10lbs. So a year after my 2nd band removal I am traveling to Tijuana to have a revision surgery (even if there is no band/port it's still a revision) to try the sleeve! It's with ALOBariatrics, Dr. Alejandro Lopez. What I'd like to know: Has anyone used Dr. Lopez recently? How was your experience? Does anyone know how being hypothyroid will hamper my weight loss chances this time around? Has anyone gone to Mexico by themselves? Was it difficult? Has anyone been successful in financing their flight with their medical loan? Is there anything I might be missing/need to know? Thanks, you guys!

Converting from band to Sleeve on August 13!

I had revision surgery in 8-11 -
I decided to go to support group tonight. I love my support group but my band dr. does not do sleeves. He does a lot of RNY and bands. Last I heard, he was going to start doing sleeves soon, cause people are requesting them. I sure didn't want to be his first one even though he is a great surgeon. I am going to tell them while I was in Arizona I started having band problems again and just decided I was sick of all the band problems and decided it was time for a revision. Every time I got on an airplane, my band tightened up and I was miserable for several days. I was doing a lot of flying right around that time too. I am sure everyone is going to be shocked. I have been going to that support group for over 2 years and we have all gotten to be a pretty close group.

Calling card for Mexico to the US
mandems mom replied to mandems mom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I went through Belite for surgery with Dr. Rod in Tijuana last week so I can't comment on experience in Juarez but what I can tell is that the Juarez hospital is much nicer and more modern than Tijuana, but that's about the only positive difference. Juarez is NOT safe which is why you're taken straight from the border to the hospital and encouraged not to leave the hospital. Many people on here have had positive experiences with the surgery themselves and no incidences getting to/from the border. I, personally, didn't want the added stress of "what if" when I was already so nervous about the surgery. My husband came with me and enjoyed the fact that he was able to go out and get and walk around. He went to different cafes and restaurants close by and never felt unsafe. But, again, the hospital in Tijuana is dated compared to Juarez, although it is full service and the operating room used the modern equipment. So far my recovery has been as expected. Mild pain, some hunger pangs, and sleepless nights trying to get comfortable. Nothing major to report and I was a band removal with revision to sleeve so your surgery will be easier. -
Doing real good. Posted details in my blog and a brief vlog update. Links in signature below. Thanks for Asking! How did the revision go for you?
-
I had lapband for four years. Was revised 18 days ago to the sleeve. My band was a pain. I threw up a lot. I constaly needed fills and unfills. I did get to goal, but it was very unhealthy. My port bugged me the entire time too. Being only 18 days out I like being sleeved way more. No port, no fills or unfills. No puking. Its awesome
-
I'm revising from the band to sleeve in May. Had I known about the sleeve back then I would have never gotten the band. Lisa was dead on with all the band complications as those are all the same issues I have plus being on a liquid diet after getting fills/unfills. Every month when I went for a fill I had to schedule them a month out. I could never get in when I needed to. The maintence of the band is a pain and not worth it IMO. Also it will take several fills for you to get restriction so all the weight you loose those first months are all on your own! Useless! Can you tell I don't have a good relationship with my band? Lol Also the band is marketed as being reversible but the damage that it can do to you is not. Just not worth it to me! Good luck with whatever way you decide.
-
I'm curious, do you have sliming/productive-burping/food "stuck" with the sleeve just like the band? I know you have to eat slow and watch your portions, but I really don't want to go the rest of my life with the same symptoms my band is giving me! I will be grateful for any info you revisions can give me!
-
If there is still restriction then there is no need to revise. 2000+ calories seems like a lot unless your doing some serious bodybuilding. I'm almost a year out and what I've realized is the the sleeve can't fail me, but I can certainly fail my sleeve. Back to basics. Maybe even counseling if you haven't addressed the issues that caused over eating before surgery? Whatever you choose, good luck!
