What is a realistic WL monthly target?

Everyone is right, there is no exact answer. If you follow your surgeon's plan, work with the nutritionist, and exercise you will lose weight and inches. And gain so much more! Checkout the NSV thread, it is my favorite -
Anyone get banded with a BMI below 40?
jms462001 replied to bennigancat's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Mine was around 37. I have osteoarthritis and spinal problems. I have been very happy. It worked well for me and I found it very easy to lose weight consistently for the first time in my life! -
I've been thinking about Weight Loss Surgery for a long time, but could not seriously pursue it until my husband concurred, which was last fall. We attended an informational seminar in Palm Springs CA over the winter and began looking for a surgeon then. We were in CA for the winter, but moving to WA state at the end of April. My medical insurance is Medicare/Tricare for Life, so I had to use a "Center of Excellence". I was able to make an appointment with Dr. Jeffrey Hunter at Virginia Mason Clinic in Federal Way WA. We met with him on May 3, 2007 and he thoroughly discussed the pros and cons of both bypass and lapband surgery. He told me that he would want me to lose 10% of my body weight prior to surgery. I weighed in at 325 that day. I started a 1000-1200 calorie diet the next day. I lost about 2 lb. a week for the first three weeks. Then the weight loss stalled and so did my enthusiasm. In a short time, I had regained the 7 lb. I was supposed to have a second appointment with Dr. Hunter in early June, but his nurse, Stephen called me early that week and told me that I didn't need to come in until I'd lost the weight. So the next day I started on a 350-500 calorie diet. Its been three weeks and I've now lost 20 lb. Last week, after several phone calls to report my weight loss thus far, Stephen called me back with a surgery date of July 20. I will have to go in about 10 days prior to that for pre-op appointments with Dr. Hunter, the dietician and the anesthesia department. :ranger:

how much fill is in your VG 11 cm band
14Tweety replied to yankeefan's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks BeacheeGirl! I was wondering how long it might take to get any restriction. When I rec'd the first fill, I felt it imemdiately, but then by the following week it was gone. Sigh. Does anyone know why it takes a while to sometimes kick in or tighten? Also, this may sound dumb, but what happens if you get your band totally filled and you lose weight and shrink your tummy, thereby losing restriction? What happens then? Do you need a smaller band? This is all SO confusing...and a teensy bit frustrating.... THANKS for the info!! -Heather -
There is not much I can add to Jack's post but to say do NOT worry about how many cc's you have in your band. At one point I had 12cc's in my 10cc band. Mind you I was a little too tight but it wasn't like I couldn't eat or drink. So you have plenty of room to go, and sometimes you would be surprised how the difference of even the smallest of fills can make between feeling hungry and feeling like you are at that ever ellusive "sweet spot" people keep talking about. And congrats on all the hard work you are putting into working with your band rather than just relying solely on the band to lose weight. When your band does finally get adjusted right I think you will be set to soar.

Anyone get banded with a BMI below 40?
TxMomof4 replied to bennigancat's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was right where bennigancat and Dawn were before I had a tummy tuck and lipo. I thought that was going to solve all my problems, WRONG! I am 5'1"and I was at 218 when I had those surgeries.Yes I would do that again, (4 c-sections) because my stomach was nasty! After a year I had gained back 38lbs that I had lost. From 218 to 175 to 193 almost two years later. My sweet sweet husband tells me "Go get the band!" So I did. I was 193 the day I met the surgeon. I am self pay because of my stupid insurance. Today I am at 151 and I am so glad I did it. It has been 5 months and it has been awesome! I would totally do it again! I have 15 pounds till my own goal. My surgeon told me I was the perfect candidate because I was still young enough (42) bless his heart and I didnt have any health issues. I hope this helps! D -
Nov 2010 bandsters
MustangKitten replied to vickieolv's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just got banded on 11/29, I am going through the stage right now where I wonder if this will work for me. I know it will work if I put the work into it like the exercise part but I am so afraid of falling into all my bad habits. I felt myself get that way this past weekend. The stress comes and all I want to do is grab a bowl of icecream or some chips. I have always been guilty of mindless eating and I caught myself doing it this weekend when I was fixing the kids plates. Luckily I caught myself before I ate more than a bite or two but I need to stop. I have never been one too keen on exercise which is one reason why I am in the position that I am but I keep wondering to myself, will I ever be gung-ho about exercise the way some of these veteran bandsters on here are? I don't have a scale at home yet so I don't know if I have lost any weight this week. I don't think I have since I don't feel like I have. I go for my post-op appointment next Thursday and my first fill is scheduled after Christmas. Sorry to be a downer today. -
Banded on the 18th of November, just filled today. A total of 6.5cc in a 14cc band. Only on liquids atm but I can say I can't chug Water like I had been Ended up losing 5 more lbs since surgery, so I'm pretty happy about that. First Holiday season I lost weight

Hello August All Stars 08, We are approaching our third band-aversary in three months. I'm getting reflective and wanted to reach out to the support group that helped us get through the most difficult period, our first year. I am guilty of not keeping our site active and supporting each other. My band journey is still very positive. I had complications with my port cord about 6 months ago and needed to have the cord repaired in a 30 minute procedure. I noticed a lot less restriction. The nurse couldn't get any fluid out of my band. The doctor did a fluoroscope and saw the cord was damaged with no explanation how it happened. I gained about 12 pounds before the port was repaired. I am back on track with decent restriction. 30 minutes every day on the treadmill. I am down about 60 lbs total and working to ad to that number. I still love my band and would do it again without question. On a personal note, I turned 51, my dear wife survived a cancer scare last year, my oldest son graduated college last week. I wish everyone good health and continued success with your band journey. Sincerely, Gary B

Okay..so I got the surgery done June 9th....I have lost about 11lbs since then. I know weight loss is super slow but hey iths something. I have been doing zumba about 3-4 times a week, counting calories (about 1200 a day), and I have 8.3 in my band. I was wondering of someone would like to share their blog or food diary to see what I'm doing wrong. If i eat slow enough and take small bites, it can go eat with no problem and feel full faster...but not exactly feel full longer...what am I doing wrong??? Any type of help would be greatly appreciated. p.s. Has anyone gone through a slow weight loss but finally it's turned around?? I need some hope ....also has anyones Dr' prescribed any diet pills with Lapband?

Why Isn't Anything Happening
CharlottClaxton replied to Ryanband07's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I too went thru that stage where I didn't lose anything. But don't let it get to you. Go heavey on the protiens and exercise. And drink plenty of water. Remember with the band surgery you don't lose as fast. it's a more natural weight lose. Don't give up. I almost did myself because I expected too much from myself. -
I felt the same way. It will be okay. The weight loss will start taking the panic away. I think we do have to mourn the loss of the old way we ate. We had a strong relationship with food and it is different now. I so want to gorge sometimes I would use food to calm down. Now I have to look deeper inside of myself. I am still so glad I did it, but it has not always been easy. You,ll be fine...

Well, my husband thinks I am "throwing money" at my problem by getting the band. I want to be free from my compulsion to over eat. As a type 1 diabetic, my endo is all for the band. It will bring down my A1c, my weight, my lipids, my blood pressure. Of course, hubby thinks I should "just eat less and exercise more". Why is it that thin people think fat people don't know what to do to lose weight! I only need to lose about 70 lbs. I have been successful losing weight in the past, but it always comes back and then some. The thing is, I can afford to self pay. I want to do it. How do I convince my skinny husband?

Question For Bandsters At Or Near Goal Weight
healthy and happy replied to Caribear's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well I cant speak for everyone but I can tell you how I feel about it- GOOD!. I have heard of ppl still seeing themselves as fat even after they lose weight and others not being happy after losing, but I can tell you now I am one happy camper. I wouldnt consider myself "thin" yet, but I am smaller than I have ever been in my adult life and it sure does feel good. The energy level, the appearance, the ability to do things I really couldnt before are all a part of that happiness. Just keep your attitude in check and be happy with every pound you lose. Have realistic expectations. Happy New Year! -
Specifically for those who had been overweight their whole lives... I've been thinking about this for a long time, and I just have to ask. Have you had any problems emotionally dealing with being "thin" for the first time? I've been obese or morbidly obese for my whole adult life and most of my childhood, and I just can't wrap my head around what it would feel like to be a normal weight. I'm ready to be healthy, but I've never known what it was like to not be the "fat girl"...

Pictures, Scales And Mirrors!! Oh My!!!
HolliJ replied to smellslikecoffee's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Wow, I totally just realized reading your post that I already reached my original goal weight of 155lbs (from 263). Nearing the end, I had extended it, but didn't really register the fact that when I started this journey, my goal was 155. Now my goal is like... 130. We'll see, lol! I weigh myself everyday. When I'm on an "off-time" and eating poorly, I may not. And yes, I have put weight back on.... since the beginning of the year, I put on 10lbs (stress from covering someone's maternity leave and doubling my responsibilities at work). In the past week, I've taken off 9lbs of that. I'll lose the next pound and then continue on with losing weight. I try to be better, become healthier, and lose more weight (even though people tell me I shouldn't).... but I feel good now. I hit a point where I became very confident and outgoing - I felt attractive (and boy has there been a response to that). Since I put on weight, I lost that a bit, and I'm trying to re-gain it. We always worry about those small little pounds and how quickly we want them gone, especially when you've reached or gotten close to your goal weight. The thing that always grounds me is that I still have the rest of my life to improve myself. I'm only 29 years old. In one month, I will have been banded 3 years. And in that time, I've lost 110lbs.... which is great and incredible! But if you were to break it down and figure out how much weekly weight loss I had.....less than a pound a week spread out. Sometimes it was more, sometimes less, sometimes none, and sometimes I gained. But in the end, I'm no longer overweight. -
But Dr. Oz had a show stating taking a shower in cold water help you lose weight. And I know for a fact cold water is good foe you hair.

Thanks! I'm just taking it day by day. That weight loss definitely helped to keep me motivated.

New here from NYC. I don't know what to say!
hungry4help replied to Thundercat's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
hi andre... welcome. i'm relatively new to this site and to being banded myself. actually just had surgery on monday, so i'm not even a week out. so far so good. the soreness is subsiding and i'm headed out soon for another walk. i'm in nyc too and might head over to central park or to the historical society. as for finding a doctor. checkout the sites for nyu (thinforlife.med.nyu.edu) and for lennox hill (LHH/MMIBS :: Home). others here have highly recc'ed dr. murian and dr. fielding at nyu. i met with dr. kruian, but ultimately went with dr. roslin over at lennox hill. as you embark on your own research, you'll find that bariatric surgeons are a relatively small community in nyc and many have worked with and for one another at some point in their career. i went with roslin and lennox hill partly because of his experience and his straightforward style. also, i appreciated that his office was convenient for me to get to from my home and my office. plus, several friends of mine had other procedures at lennox hill and i liked that it was a somewhat smaller hospital and very focused on patient care. at any rate, do yourself a favor and comparison shop. you're making a lifetime purchase, commitment and quite possibly forming a lifetime relationship with your medical team. also, pick-up "weight loss surgery for dummies." it's a helpful primer and will help you think of and ask the right questions. good luck with your decision and your quest for a healthier lifestyle. -
