    May Surgeries - check in!

No calorie goals were outlined for me in my program until I got to the regular food stage. Then my binder info says to keep my calories UNDER 1,000 a day UNTIL I reach my goal weight. I told the dietician last week that I get around 600-800 a day depending on what I'm eating. She said that was fine and as time goes on I will reach closer to the 1,000 limit. So based on what she told me, sounds like you're plan is similar to mine and you're doing the right thing. Everyone's plan is different.
  2. Okay, so it seems this can happen as part of the natural ebb and flow of weight loss surgery then. I definitely agree with hormones as well, as I know the weight loss does throw things off until our bodies level out. If it continues for a longer period I’ll definitely call my doc but I feel great otherwise so I guess I’ll enjoy this pace while it lasts!
  3. I know this may sound ridiculous but in the past two weeks I’m experiencing rapid loss of about a lb a day, and I feel like it should be slowing down. Is it possible I’m not getting enough protein? I didn’t go through all of this just to wreck my body further and I want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to be as healthy as possible. Is this just normal? From weeks 3-5 my loss slowed down a bit so maybe this is the normal cycle? I had sleeve if that makes a difference. I do drink all my water and I’m measuring out my food. I walk 5 days a week. If not normal I’m ready to call my doc. Crazy how unpredictable the body is!

    July 2021 Surgery People!

My highest weight was 290. I’ve tried to lose weight over the past year. I started the process at 282 and went into surgery at 263. As of this morning I’ve lost 5 lbs. How about you? Would love to continue to compare notes. So far this morning my burning is better just backing off a little

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I’m same Sue, we’ll get there, I’m sure😊 my hospital co-ordinator called yesterday and said I was doing ok.. just to focus on the fluids getting in just now. It’s very difficult to drink all the fluids but we can only drink what we can, and reach the next stage 🙏 I’m so glad we are so near each other operation wise too, we can compare notes and help each other through. Do you mind me asking what weight you were to make you think of the surgery in the first place? 😊 x

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I didn’t have much pain just the trapped air…. The same about the sensation as I swallow 😢 I weighed myself before leaving the hospital and gained the nurse said it’s the IV…. I was like OMG lol How many days are you? X

    July 2021 Surgery People!

For me the pain hasn’t really been an issue. I had otc liquid Tylenol the morning of the 3rd and nothing since. My biggest issue has been the burning sensation when drinking my water or protein shake. It doesn’t seem to matter how small the sip- it still burns. The good news about that is between sips it does settle down. I’ve already lost 4 pounds. Don’t be surprised if you actually gain a few pounds after surgery. It’s just the IV fluids. You’ll lose it quickly

    Scared shtless

Touch base with your dietitian and let him/her know how you are feeling. It’s normal to have doubts and fears! Your support team is there for you anytime! After my surgery I dealt with head hunger pretty bad and found that hot/warm liquids helped satisfy the cravings. I drank a lot of Swanson Chicken Bone Broth, Better Than Bullion beef flavor, and cinnamon tea. Soon after I did develop actual hunger and my stomach would growl. I still struggle with this (I’m five months post-op) and when I could move to puréed foods I would eat foods mixed really well in my food processor. I can still only eat about two ounces at a time and if I feel the need for a snack I eat green olives, boiled eggs, or dill pickles. Try to avoid sugary fruits or too many sweet potatoes. This can slow your weight loss progress. I still only incorporate small amounts of carbs (steamed broccoli, green beans, spinach, etc), dairy, or berries. Be sure you are getting lots of protein and taking your multivitamins, B vitamins, iron, biotin, and calcium. You need to supplement your diet with these since you can’t get everything you need with food. You are going to be okay!!! Take it one day at a time and I know you will be very happy with your results. You can also always reach out to people on this forum for support! 💕

    Miscarriage

About three months ago I had a miscarriage after a ivf pregnancy. Since then my Lapland has become soooo tight. I was at a good place with my band. I was able to gain or lose weight. In the last 3 months I lost 33lbs. I weigh now 187. Im greatful for the weightloss but its torture. Anyone have experience with this? Can I still get back to myhappy place without touching the band?

Pants Size and Other Bariatric Sites

I think the story that 10lb equates to a dress size refers to when you’re at or near your healthy BMI range. I remember when I’d lost my first 14kg (30lbs) my clothes were just looser. There were a couple of things I could wear that were a size smaller (from my multi size wardrobe) but they were a looser cut. Also we all carry out weight differently & we may notice a top is looser first but not the bottom or vice verses. My butt seemed to get smaller first & I had a lot of baggy ass pants that still fitted me around the waist. Now a couple of kg can put me up or down a size.

it depends on your weight. When I weighed almost 400 lbs, I had to drop a lot of weight to go down a size. Now I'll drop a size if I lose 10 lbs (if that...)
  12. btw - after the first couple of months, I don't think you really lose weight much faster than you would without the surgery. The difference is, whatever you're doing actually WORKS this time (as long as you follow the rules, that is). You're not fighting biology the whole time like you were before.
  13. the average WLS patient seems to lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first MONTH, so at 6 weeks out, you're totally normal. Of course, you will always find outliers to that 15-25 lb range, but they're outliers. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people's expectations are shaped by shows like "My 600 lb Life", but you have to remember that those people start out with MUCH higher BMI's than the average WLS patient. I lost 16 lbs the first month, and 28 lbs at the two-month mark. I only record monthly weights in my spreadsheet so I don't know where exactly I was at six weeks out, but I was probably about 23-24 lbs down at that point. And I ended up losing all of my excess weight, over 200 lbs. So you've got nothing to worry about. In the end, it's your level of commitment to the program that's going to make the biggest difference.

    Dilated Sleeve

Besides having gained weight back, what other symptoms did you have? I have only gained about 10 lbs back. But I feel like the acid reflux is getting so much worse. I DO NOT want to resort to PPIs!

    Caffeine

My surgeon allowed 2 cups a day.But I'm a hard core coffee drinker (think like 2 pots a day), so I decided to quit coffee during pre op. It wasn't pleasant lol but I don't want anything to hurt my weight loss. Since surgery , I definitely feel like I have more energy (could be all the protein), and I've learned that what I enjoyed a lot about coffee was the habit of drinking a warm cup of liquid...so I started subbing with some peppermint/chai/chamomile tea. 1500 calorie count

I'm pre-op (for revision). I'd probably gain weight at 1500 calories. Over the past three months, my calorie count has dropped from 1200 to even under 1000 per day. I'm OK with it. I swore off sugar and flour 3 when I started the pre-op dieting. I don't get the cravings I once had although the first month was a b***h. Protein shakes are a game-changer. They weren't around when I had my gastric bypass 30 years ago. I usually substitute 1 meal per day with a protein shake. I've discovered that there are vast differences among the brands. I prefer the taste of the plant-based protein to the whey-based.

It's really impossible to know because it depends on how you carry your weight and how it comes off. The first 30 pounds I lost seem to come off my legs and arms and I didn't change in size.
  18. I had RNY around 1990 at St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. I don't recall the surgeon's name. I kept the weight off for five years and gradually regained all I had lost in the following years.

    Six weeks out and scared??

Yup. I am a lil over 6 weeks out (almost 7, actually) and only lost 34.9! I hit a plateau around week 2/3-ish that lasted like 12 days. Now the entire past week I seemed to have stalled again as the scale has not moved. Not sure why I'm having so many stalls so soon when I have a LOT to lose still (not like I'm at the end of my losing stage when I expect to slow), am doing everything right, etc. It sucks when you're doing everything you should be and it's going slow/stall. I get it. I expressed this to my dietician last week and she assured me I was doing everything right and that I was losing a good amount of weight. She was happy with my progress and told me NOT to compare myself to others and what they have or haven't lost. So I guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and see what happens. Sounds like you're doing well too and making similar progress. Congrats!

    May Surgeries - check in!

I am a little over 5 weeks out and I finally hit my stall. I stalled with weight loss all of week 5 and so far into week 6 still at a stall. I have increased my walking to about 3 miles a day total. Preop weight was 302. SW: 281 CW: 257. Hopefully the stall is temporary. Currently eating about 800 calories a day and around 80-85 avg gms of protein daily.

Pants Size and Other Bariatric Sites

That’s a good question! I’m guessing it’s probably different for everyone. I’m down 15lbs due to my pre-op diet (last day - YAY!) and see no difference in my waist size or the fit of my clothes. I’m current 249.5lbs and if I recall the last time I lost weight and had to buy new jeans it was around the 230lbs mark for me.

Why did YOU choose your procedure?

I had gastric sleeve about 2 weeks ago. My stats are similar to yours: I have a lot of weight to lose, I am middle age, I had heartburn, etc. I chose sleeve because it was a safer procedure with less manipulation of the abdominal region. I had 3 cesareans and a hernia repaired over the last several years and I knew I had a lot of scar tissue. Given all of this, I thought that gastric sleeve would be the lesser risk and my surgeon agreed. I am a bit worried about the heartburn returning, but I have post-op pills for it and I also read that the more weight you lose you less of a chance for GERD, so I am hoping for the best. Good luck in your decision!

    3 Month Update

Hello fellow Bariatricals, I am 3 months out and wanted to compare everyone else 3 month weight loss. I have only list 13kg which is 28 pounds. I am not worried, as I am losing and Ive always had a slow metabolism. How were you guys at 3 months post op ( please only give me weight loss from surgery day).
  24. I had a friend who’d had a sleeve & I picked her brain plus I did a lot of research. Originally I had thought I’d just do the band because it was reversible but after the research I was leaning towards a sleeve. I had 31kg I wanted to lose, was almost 54 yrs. Most of my weight was gained when I reached menopause when I put on most of that weight in a year & couldn't shift it. Prior to that I bounced around 60-75kg most of my adult life. My metabolism was really slow too. I killed it from years of skipping meals. (I did that 500 calorie diet for 6 weeks the year before my surgery & barely lost 3kgs.) I had some reflux but had managed it quite successfully for years with dietary changes & only very occasionally needed medication. I enjoyed real food too. Wasn’t a fast food person, not one for pre prepared mass produced meals, only occasionally had a takeaway (no creamy sauces, no deep fried, steamed, grilled, lots of vegetables). My portion sizes were ok - way less than a lot of my friends who often finished my meal. Sure I enjoyed something sweet at night but it would be a couple of sweet biscuits or a cup cake. My biggest battle seemed to be a slow metabolism & then damn hormonal changes. After questioning me about my eating habits, weight gain/loss history & my lifestyle, my surgeon went through each of the surgeries with me, identifying their pros & cons & how they might impact my life. He also wanted to know what I was thinking. He agreed with my choice of the sleeve because I had been managing my reflux with diet already, my lifestyle & history. I’m happy with my sleeve. It was the right choice for me. Good luck with your decision.
  25. Aside from your surgeon’s recommendation for you…………. Which procedure YOU felt was best for you & why? I feel like since I am a foodie-I LOVE real food , I was an emotional eater , I have heart burn often, im over 100lbs overweight, I am over the age of 30( losing weight seems like an impossible task nowadays ), my metabolism is low, I plan on getting pregnant at least once in the future and portion control has been a major issue= Gastric bypass is best for me.
