  1. What a coincedence, I was just going to post a thread that was going to be titled ' Old Habits Die Hard'... I'm about 3 weeks post op and have not been filled at all yet and wont be until the 20th- so my appetite is back and I emailed my nurse and she told me to eat a lowfat diet until fill time such as Weight Watchers...hehe...After failing at 'Weight Watchers' 9 times in a 3 month perion my family Doc referred me for Lap-Band so I'm a little 'burnt-out' if you will, from WW. I had an ice cream sand. of my husbands last night because I had a 'bad day' .I REALLY wanted to work out but for some reason my pain level was horrible yesterday. ( I, too found that jumping right back into excersise helped speed my healing immensly- I think those muscles NEED that activity to heal) so I at the bad food- granted it was 160 calories and 5 g of fat it was still high in carbs and sugars and a 'no-no' and Ice cream is a 'trigger food' for me. I think the main reason we slip back into bad habits is becasue it is the instant gratification that takes care of why we want to eat the shit to begin with. But what's MORE important is I really didnt feel terrible guilt for eating it- and I think thats a huge step in the right direction, as in the past the guilt would haunt me and make me feel worse. Pick up, move on, and we are all here because we were strong enough to change!!! and no one is perfect and we all mess up!!! But we are all strong enough to persevere!!!!!

  3. Please don't take this the wrong way, but if there's one thing you'll here on this site perhaps more than any other it's this: don't compare yourself to others. There's nothing good that can come of it. Even if you found someone that was your exact same starting weight, height, and even had surgery the same day, there are still way too many other variables that could impact your progression. Just some examples: age, physical fitness, %body fat, basal metabolism, diet, bougie size, surgical complications, etc. Honestly, it sounds like you're doing fine. If you're not happy with your loss so far, talk with your bariatric team. They may have suggestions for you such as increasing the amount and type of exercise and/or changes to your diet. Best of luck!

One year after surgery, 155 lbs, size 8-10.

I decided to look over the photos and when I clicked on these pictures, I really am inspired by your weight loss in a year. I am almost at the same weight that you were before surgery. I am going to have my sleeve on Dec. 2. and I hope by next year at this time I will be down to a similar size and weight as you. Your pictures are so nice, you look great, Now I am going to look to see if you posted on "Tell your story". Thank you!!
  5. I'm 4.5 months out from my surgery and at 5'2" I've lost 65 pounds so far. I've gone down from a size 22/20 jeans to a size 14 or in some cases even size 12. To put in perspective, my older sister who had the same surgery (RNY) a few years ago, also 5'2, had lost 45 pounds at the point I'm at. This shows how different weight loss is individually. In my case a lot is probably from nutritional issues and losing weight too quickly. That's an ongoing issue my team is still trying to work out. It's hard to get enough nutrition when you are full for the day after literally one bite of something in the morning.

Submitted to Cigna now the wait begins

I'm really interested in how long it takes you... As i have cigna also... May I be so bold to ask your BMW and co-morbidites? Gosh, I must be getting rude, am kind of (in a very round about way) asking someone their weight!

Submitted to Cigna now the wait begins

Thank you for sharing your experience with Cigna. Still waiting. I called them yesterday and they said it was with the nurse for review and that something should be faxed to the doctor by Wednesday. We did follow all their guidelines. I even did a full 90 days with the NUT. I did not loose weight however. Fingers crossed.

    Gallbladder

HAHAHA! Gall Bladder issues are VERY common with rapid weight loss. (Mine was already gone). But there are some medical treatments during your BIG weight loss, if you don't remove it prophilactically (sp)
  9. I thought I'd write about my journey for the older folks out there considering this surgery. Last Nov I turned 71 and after regaining 50 pounds I had lost two years ago (the story of my life) I could see that if I didn't do something drastic I would spend my remaining years in a wheel chair. So off to a bariatric seminar I went. I was encouraged by all that I saw there and decided to take the plunge. I survived the two week starvation diet with out murdering my husband or eating the furniture and had my surgery on Feb. 4th. I started my journey at 298.5. The surgery was interesting I guess. As they put in the gas to blow me up, the gas hit my vagus nerve and my body slowed way down. 40 heartbeats a minute. They backed off the gas and did chest compressions to get me stabilized. Then contacted the cardiologist who told them to go for it so they compleated the surgery and then sent me to the cath lab for a heart cath. That came back normal. Surgeon said I gave them quite a scare. I wouldn't know as I woke up in the ICU and don't remember a thing about even going to the OR. Let me tell you, I used Tennova at Turkey Creek as my hospital and the care was outstanding both in the ICU and the bariatric wing. I couldn't have asked for better. Woke up only to walk far enough to get them to take the catheter out. My surgeon checks for leaks during surgery so I would drink as soon as I woke up. Yayyyyy. I could drink easily and like the very cold the best. I had no nausea or pain when still. When I tried to get up that was another story. Seems like when they blew me up they also disturbed the scar tissue from my mastectomies of 9 years ago and that gave me fits for about a week. The actual surgery part was a breeze. I have had no problem meeting my carb, Protein and Fluid goals daily. I can drink normally but not as much as fast. I'm on liquids for 4 weeks on then on to purees. I am so looking forward to some refried beans!!! So for you older folks considering this--go for it. I'm a two time cancer surviver and figured I had nothing but fat to lose and everything to gain. I'd do this again in a heartbeat. Oh, and I'm down 23 lbs. from the start of my pre op so that part is going well, too. Chris
  10. I was banded in 2008. Weighed in at 223lbs, by 2010 I was down to 162lbs. Didn't make goal, but was feeling great and very happy with the loss I had so far. In 2011 I was pregnant with my first child and up to 174lbs a gain of 12lbs, my pregnancy went well, I gained close to 20lbs and lost it in 2 weeks after giving birth. Suddenly without warning my band got so tight I had reflux and could not get much food in. I decided an adjustment was in order and I had my band adjusted (unfill) I thought I was doing great and felt happy that I had lost the baby weight. Slowly I started gaining weight again. It was tough and it didn't seem like I had control over my eating, the band or anything else. 1.5 years after giving birth I had gained 23lbs and felt that something needed to be done. I went to the doctor and adjusted my band once again (filled). Did not see much improvement. But began to get reflux, stuck episodes and feeling sick all the time. Once again needed an adjustment to take fluid out. 5.5 years out of Lapband surgery I finally feel it's time to go back to basics. Would like the help of other lap banders old and new.
  11. Are there any dating services special for plus size people? I have looked through many services and whenever I told someone my weight, they said no thanks. It's very frustrating going through all this trouble and would be so easy to just meet someone who likes big girls. I'm not looking for a man, I got one that I love dearly, but my sister needs a man and she can't handle any more rejection and heart ache!
  12. La_madam

Are there any good dating services?

Where do you live, I have a brother who is looking for a nice woman, weight is not an issue with him. He has just lost over 100 lbs himself so he knows the struggle. He is the greatest man and very handsome too.I do not understand why he can not find himself a good woman. He has a good job, makes good money, loves kids. Has a good tender heart. If I was single he would be my kind of man!
  13. So, my weight loss has been VERY slow and I've been working my tushy off trying to get rid of this weight. Last fill, I finally felt some restriction and then it went away after about 2wks. Then, I started to gain. The doctor asked if I was getting anything stuck and I told him no and that I want to get to the point where there are certain things that I cannot eat.... I think that helped because he put a whole 2cc in my band....for a total of 8 cc in a 9cc band. I'm a lil nervous because what if this doesn't work and I only have 1 more cc to be full!?!?!?! Anyone else with similar experiences? Words of encouragement appreciated!!! I REALLY want this to work!!!

Are there any january dates out there? What are u doing to get ready?
  16. Consider the percentages...at 20 lbs you have lost more than 10% of your body weight. If I were to lose 20 lbs it would only be less than 6% of my body weight. :nonod:
  17. To love myself more!! Once I started gaining weight I could care less about myself. I treated my body horribly. Newly sleeved 2/29 I'm taking this as a new chance to love me and treat my body as so.
  18. In August I had my last fill of .3 ccs, bringing me to 7.1 total. I felt green for a long time. Then, in December I started to throw up frequently and I had awful acid reflux in the middle of the night. I would wake up choking on acid, gross. So last week I went back to my doctor and he removed .25 ccs. Now I feel like I made a mistake because I'm hungry earlier during the day and later at night than I have been. I'm also able to eat easier, I feel like I'm not restricted enough. Does anyone know if they are able to put in .1 cc? Anyone else have this experience? I definitely don't want to throw up often and have esophageal issues, but I don't want to gain weight either. Help! (I posted this in the basics forum first, sorry if it's a repeat for you.)

    People change

Just wait until you're 187 (your goal weight?)...everyone will talk to you then, lol. I am more open to conversation now than when I was fat, so that could be part of the reason. As you lose weight, you gain confidence. Of course, I am 100% sure that the men that hit on me now would never have given me the time of day 100 pounds ago, so I don't entirely dismiss the fact that people are more interested in being friendly with people who are not overweight. Kind of blunt, but I also tend to think sometimes it is true.

    start preop diet= losing mind

Orchid, I'm not sure where you are at in your dietary process but when I was able to eat real food, I found Buffalo (Bison) burger really good. It is low in fat and higher in Protein than most other red meat. You just can't cook it to pieces so to speak because it is so lean it tends to dry out quickly when cooking. Anyway, it is something a little different and is great in chili in which the Beans also provide additional protein. Good luck on your weight loss journey!
  21. *Update* I went in yesterday morning at 9am to see Dr.Provost. He tried with 2 needles to hit the port, but no luck. So he sent me across the street to the hospital where I had my surgery, to do the fill under flouroscopy ($100 by the way! ). I went over and as soon as they had a machine available they called him over. I was glad to see that when Dr.Provost came he brought his PA Chrystyna with him. I was glad at this point to see friendly, familiar faces, seeing as I was extremely worried at this point. And cold, that hospital was freezing! So after seeing my port on xray, its not perfect but maybe not completely terrible either. My port is sort of angled upwards, it is not laying flat as it should be, but it is not flipped over either, so no surgery to correct it is planned at this time. They still hope that it will lay down as more swelling goes down and I lose more weight. Dr and PA were there to see exactly how it is facing and how to manipulate it to flatten it out and get the fill done. So I got the fill, I am very, very sore and bruised! My tummy looks like I got hit with a baseball! :frown: The Dr wants to do my next fill in a little over 2 weeks. Wish me luck! I am feeling a little more restriction, now then I did. But no issues swallowing or vomiting! Yea! Thats a good thing.

    A little confused

Good reply Elfiepoo, and congratulations on your non-scale victories. Don''t forget about exercise, the muscle we may be adding weighs more than fat, so the scales can't show us that change. Also a very good point is that my reason for the surgery was more to be sure I could keep it off once lost not to lose weight quicker. The early weight loss does help to remind us of how much better things can be if we lose weight and I know I'm needing a reminder to keep on track.

    A little confused

I remember not losing any weight for 2 weeks after my surgery but then, slowly but surely it started coming off 2-3 lbs a week. Hang in there it will happen.
  24. Down 35 lbs. since surgery which is 19% of my excess weight. Feeling a little stronger every day. Although I must admit that I thought I would bounce back much faster (age 43). On the soft foods for another week and then I'm unleashed on the world of food choices. Determined to make better choices for my body and give it the Protein that it needs FIRST. I also joined a gym so that I can take advantage of this "honeymoon" period with my appetite being practically nothing and hoping that will help boost my losses each week. Just out of curiosity, what was your average weight loss per week?

    five year weight history.....

I had BCBS of LA. I gave a 5 year weight history also. I think if you were consistently overweight then that is probably enough. It is showing a patter of moving upward and not slowly down. The person who would know more, though, is the insurance people at your surgeon's office. I can assure you they have submitted someone from your insurance company before, and will probably know about what you will need to qualify. They knew right away at my surgeon's office exactly how long it would take form my approval with what I gave them. Bottom line is, don't worry about it. Send what you have, because you can't change the past weight history.Good luck.
