Food costs now vs post op...

I am lucky to eat most my meals at work and they usually have some type of meat that I can eat. If not there is soup and the good old favorite cottage cheese. If I buy any food for days off/snack it is usually Greek yogurt. I am bad about not getting in enough protein so I have to start buying drinks and bars to help.
  2. I often buy cheese and yogurt on sale and freeze them. I first cut the cheese in 1-2 ounce chunks so it is easy to grap the right amount. I am currently making my own Jerky, just shy of 5 lbs worth. It has to marinate overnight so I will let you know tomorrow how this receipe is Of course that stays good a long time. I paid $22.00 for the meat when it was one sale. I will put into bags for a quick snack. I make my own popsicles when I can. From SF koolaid. I buy chinese food in the quart size and split it to freeze for a great lunch or dinner. I love the Happy family, it has crab, shrimp, pork, beef and chicken with veggies. I buy farm fresh eggs, which are more expensive but they are larger and stay good over a month. I also make hard boiled eggs for a quick snack or lunch. I love ground burger with just salt and pepper on it. So I brown 5-6 lbs at a time and put into tupperware bowls for a quick meal. I also portion off 1 lb for my Hubby's food. It is so nice to have it all browned and you can quick make a casserole, tacos, chili or sp. I always have cooked frozed shrimp in the freezer. So easy and I love shrimp anytime of the day. And a Great source of Protein. Also buy almonds when they are on sale. I have froze them in the past as well. Measure out small bagies with an ounce or two. You can Freeze almost everything and sure does save on groceries. I have a 31 one thermal bag that I always have in the car. Keeps things cold or warm, love that thing. He is all my marinating beef for the jerky! What are you tips?
  3. Hi @@RaginCajun, thanks for the kind words! I have not experimented with Protein bars yet. I remember back in my monster eating days, that I would look for the ones with the most calories so they would fill me up the best. I guess I view them more as a source of calories than of protein. Weird, huh? So I still get all my protein from a morning shake, and then meat, Beans, nuts, cheese, and yogurt. Hey, good luck with your program! Let me know if you have any more questions....

    Bailey Bariatrics in Owasso

I can eat some yogurt I just have to really space put the dairy products. Ya I am finding out there are tons of other suggestions for bariatric patients. I will figure it out.
  6. I was traveling for business early in the week since I flew I did not have a cooler option. I was able to stop at a convenience store and get a light yogurt and P3 by Lunchables. I love the grilled nuggets at Chik-fil-A. The kid's meal is a perfect size. I get either fresh fruit or no sugar added cinnamon applesauce as the side and a diet lemonade. Wendy's has a grilled chicken sandwich but I skip the roll and don't get a side. You can get Wendy's chili. Wendy's has a few salads with grilled chicken or with the chili. It looks like McD's has some grilled chicken sandwiches or grilled chicken on salad. Boston Market has some good options. Arby's has a lot of sandwiches. On the kid's menu they have a turkey cheese sandwich and GoGo squeeze applesauce for a side. They have a roast turkey salad. I have no problem just eating the meat/cheese, lettuce, tomato off of a sandwich and dumping the rest. Same with a burger. In your case I would pack a cooler. Even if the rest of the family wants McD's you know you have something you like and won't lead you into temptation. But regular bread and basic hamburger rolls have never been my downfall so it is easy for me to not eat it. If bread and rolls is a weak spot for you you may want to go with the grilled nuggets, Boston Market chicken (hold the cornbread) or salads. I have never asked but the restaurant may be willing to put the guts of the sandwich in a box and hold the bread/roll and thus avoid the temptation.
  7. how much water do you all use and how much protein when you make fuzzy navel? i put a scoop in with my yogurt but want to try drinking it with water, don't want to waste it by experimenting either lol
  8. Had my surgery May 26, Started pureed yesterday, Hate It!. I would just rather not eat. I do not like the feel, texture, taste of mushy food. I am really having a hard time. I would much rather stay on Protein shakes, and greek yogurt than put mushy in my mouth, then not being able to wash it down is even worse. Ok, I have had my whine, on with the plan. I know it will get better. I thought that getting water in was tough. Seems that each stage has its ups and downs.

    Bailey Bariatrics in Owasso

Sorry you're having trouble. At the beginning, I did protein shakes, soups, refried beans. The first month I could barely eat or drink anything, so now I have to make up for the protein that I didn't get in the beginning. To be honest, I googled other bariatric programs and ate stuff off of their menus. I found that Bailey has the toughest/strictest food menus. Can you eat Greek yogurt?

    Fast Food Staples

I avoid fast food like the plague, but my husband and I do a lot of traveling and sometimes there just isn't a choice. If I have to eat it, I like the Jack in the Box chicken fajita pita (I'll have maybe one bite of the pita at the end but just eat the insides). KFC has a BBQ pulled chicken sandwich which I'll have without the bun. Taco Bell al fresco chicken taco, no tortilla. Definitely Panera salads with grilled chicken. Panera actually has a number of pretty good choices. They have a new lentil quinoa bowl that is very filling and more than two servings. Also for breakfast, their power oatmeal with quinoa and pecans. Lots of protein there. If I have to have gas station food (yikes!), some of them have the cheese & veggie or cheese & fruit trays that sometimes come with nuts. Those aren't bad at all. Or I'll grab a hard-boiled egg, or yogurt and some nuts, or some turkey jerky. I always keep a Premier Protein Crunch Bar in my purse in case of a dire emergency. 15 grams of protein and it will tide me over for hours until we get to where we're going. And if we're going out to a restaurant, I always, always go online and figure out what I'm going to eat before we get there. So glad we live in the Internet age where that's possible! I try to make most of my food at home so I know exactly what's going into it, but sometimes it's just not possible. It's nice to have strategies in place in case of emergency.

    Woo Hoo!

Almost nothing! LOL! I eat 1 or 2 times a day. So far I've had yogurt, canned chicken with a little low fat mayo and pepper, refried beans with cheddar cheese and taco sauce, scrambled egg, a pureed egg with mustard...stuff like that...I've tried to get creative and make it interesting where I can. Right now I'm craving pizza soooo, I'm going to use low carb pizza sauce, a little browned and finely chopped hamburger meat with some skim mozzarella cheese...sort of a mock pizza...now prior to surgery it was protein shakes 2 to 3 times a day and then a sensible meal...
  12. I only had to be on clears for two days. The first day of that, I was still in the clinic and only had ice chips, a little water, and I think one sugar free popsicle. The next day I had a little Vitamin Water Zero, a few spoonfuls of broth, and i think like two tiny bites of jello. If you are like me, you just aren't going to be able to handle much of anything that first day or two. Water is the main concern. I wouldn't worry about protein much at all. Beyond those first two days, I still really only had popsicles, chicken broth, and water. Tried drinking a little protein shake maybe 3-4 days post-op. Then I really started working on getting more protein aroudn the 4 or 5 day mark. By that point I was allowed protein shakes and drinkable yogurt in addition to strained soups.

Pudding, yogurt, cottage cheese, re fried beans - like others have said, since I eat so little, I repeat a lot of things that I enjoy.

    Day 8

It is really odd to me how different every Dr. is. I was sleeved on 6/2. Day 1-2 Clear Liquids, Day 3-6 yogurt, cream of wheat, day 7-13 Soft egg, refried Beans, cottage cheese, week 3-4 is moving to some solids like deli meat and other things. I never knew I would love refried beans as much as I do right now.

    Soft food suggestions?

Cottage cheese and yogurt (even though the counted as full liquids) were my goto. Refried Beans with melted cheese. Ricotta bake. The second week of soft foods when I was allowed, I added salmon, tuna, and tilapia. What foods are allowed on your NUTs program. I just went by her list and tried different foods that were allowed that appealed to me.
  16. Lol thanks! This definitely put a smile on my face even though a lot of what you just said kind of scares the crap out of me! I LOVE myself some dunkies and or marylous! I recently started doing the sugar free shots not swirls and skim milk or sugar free creamer at home.. (They have me starting to get ready for what life's going to be like after surgery) everything I a huge change. I'm doing pretty good so far. Can I express how proud I am of myself for a moment? 1. I drank Mountain Dew faithfully for 12 years I'm talking 24 packs in a day! I've been Mountain Dew clean for almost 4-5 months now! I drink only Water and one coffee a day! Forced myself! I can't imagine it any other way now! 2. I have been a smoker since I was 6 years old (discussing I know! I have older nephews so if I smokes with them they knew I couldn't snitch on them!) I couldn't inhale until I was 8 but either way.. I'm 30 now.. I haven't had a cigarette in a week now!!! I don't even really care! That's the shocking part! I think I'm to concerned with my eating to think about smoking lol 3. I used to lay in bed and feel sorry for myself not move at all. Hence being almost 400lbs at one point I've been moving more even little things I have stairs that lead up to the bathroom... I so ten push-ups off the stairs before I can pee lmao and I have three kids all under 5 so.. Enough said there. I do jump and jacks with my 4 year old ( or what I consider to be jump and jacks ) I have cheated on this diet a little bit but when I've cheated it's been two extra pieces of celery or an extra scoop of low fat Greek yogurt.. Not an extra bowl of Pasta with extra sauce and bacon and chicken like used to. I'm proud of me Thank you for listening to my rant and thanks for all the advice!! I'm going crazy over here cuz I don't even know if they are going to give me a date yet! I'm still waiting! All I know is they put me on this diet and she said it's what I will be on for the rest of my life after surgery basically (minus the time I'm on the liquid diet) I just want a date now! I need to know!! I think I'm more nervous not knowing if I will get a date... I need this! I need to live and stick around for my kids!

    Repeatedly overeating

My surgeon and nutritionist suggested low fat too, but I think as more of a "general rule". I mean, you have to be able to use your brain. They probably put things in absolutes in your instructions because they expect that most patients aren't going to read nutrition labels. But if you use your brain and see that the low fat version is full of sugar and has just as many calories as the low fat version, then there is no reason to choose the low fat version. I read labels. I eat low fat string cheese and low fat greek yogurt, because when I compare them to the full fat versions, they are better nutritionally all the way down the list. But that isn't the case for everything. Guidelines are good, but we have to be allowed to use our brains as well.

    Tiredness and Regret

Hey, Kimmie I was also sleeved on 5/18. It is great to find others on my same timeline. My experience has been different from yours as I could handle liquids fairly quickly. I just had a lot of pain from my incisions. I did notice that as long as I am getting at least 80 grams of Protein in a day my energy stays up. It doesn't seem to be the calories as much as it is the protein in my personal opinion because I am still trying to get up to 800 calories a day (and failing most day) but energy is good. When I was on full liquids I stuck with Protein drinks (Premier like most people) and Unjury's chicken flavor (nice change of pace). As I moved to soft foods I have had to work at getting in the protein so I still have at least one Premier shake in the morning. I also have been living on the Dannon Oikios Triple Zeros yogurt (15g protein) for Snacks. These seem to go down easy and taste good to me. I did notice that I have a big drop in energy mid-afternoon if I am not doing a protein rich snack. Keep me posted on how your doing.
  19. Thank you ALL for your responses???? No, my Dr. Just said they were some examples of what I can eat. Like scrambled egg, mash potatoes, refried Beans, greek yogurt, pureed veggies/fruit. I never feel like I'm starving because I'm drinking all day but I dont feel any restriction. Should I worry? Will I start feeling it once I'm on pureed?

    Protein?

I'm always changing my Protein drinks up. My program calls for 60-90 grams just from drinks, in addition to food. For a few weeks I was drinking two Premier Protein drinks daily to meet the minimum. This week I've started making drinks again using frozen fruit, yogurt, milk and Protein powder (either unflavored, banana or orange depending on what flavor I'm going for). In the first few weeks post-surgery I found that I had to drink them really slowly, but as time has passes it has gotten easier. I can drink the Premier Protein shakes the fastest, I think because they are the thinnest. I've also found it easiest to get all the protein in when I'm on a schedule.
  21. Blended Soups, yogurt, refried Beans blended and thinned out with chicken broth, blenderized chicken and veggies thinned with broth, sugar free pudding thinned out, Jello... pretty much anything can be made to work. Just blend it and add broth or milk to thin it out.
  22. What do you eat that you eat only protein? Wow - I am impressed that you can drink 100 ounces of Water. I don't come close to that. You eat only protein... that must be very challenging. What are your typical lunch and dinners like?I really, really force the fluids. It helps that my two toddlers have me up every day at 6AM, so I get a very early start. My daily menu is extremely boring! By saying, "I only eat protein," what I mean is, I have not incorporated in any type of vegetables or fruit, or even healthy grains of any kind, yet. I'm 10 weeks out and have no food texture restrictions now, but here's how a day typically looks Breakfast - egg whites with shredded low fat cheese, or a Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurt or cottage cheese (or any combination of those things, depending on how hungry I am/time of month.) Mid-morning snack - Babybel Mozzarella mini cheese (or two) Lunch - any of these things: steamed shrimp, StarKist tuna pouch, grilled chicken, grilled salmon Mid-day snack (if I need one) - another Greek yogurt or cottage cheese dinner - usually fish/seafood or chicken again, similar to lunch. Lump crab meat, shrimp, salmon, tuna ... I'm a creature of habit, so eating the same things for an extended period of time does not bother me. I know at some point it will, but for now, that's how I'm eating. I'm ever conscious that we have a honeymoon phase, and I'm taking full advantage of it. Right now, I am eating 90-100g of protein every day. Again, something I know I won't sustain forever. But, honeymoon phase. Oh got it. You eat incidental carbs and fat, just don't add them to your diet. That makes much more sense! Thanks for sharing. You eat very similarly to the way I did when j was in the losing phase except I still incorporated Protein Shake supplements because I couldn't eat enough to get my goal protein number without them.
  23. I am just on the other side of that, 9 days postop. The 14 day preop diet was the hardest diet i have ever done, and like all of us, I've done them all! I just kept telling myself that it would make my surgery safer and help me to adjust afterward. Both are true. Also, my nutritionist told me she would rather have me eat more of what was on my diet than flip out and go off the rails with cake or something. Check with your NUT to see if that is allowed, but it did really help me to be able to grab more yogurt or applesauce or protein shake if I needed to. Also...drink your water! It really does help fill you up. You can do this!
  24. I have been on the puréed diet since Saturday and have been having issues finding the right thing to eat too! I have had chicken, yogurt, cottage cheese, soup with unflavored protein powder and vegetables puréed with enchilada sauce. It's ok but boring! Good luck finding something!
  25. My doctor only gave me a few options. Fruit cocktail, low fat yogurt, mash and baked Beans, fish stew and mash, custard and weetabix, all puréed or blended of course. I was gonna ask for some more tips too cause this isn't much of a choice. Day 2 for me on purée foods and I must stay it bloody hurts and is uncomfortable. Feels like it's stuck in my chest. I rarely eat, I never feel hungry and I can't feel restriction just feel uncomfortable And that tends to make me stop. Any advice out there!
