    Everything makes me queasy!

I'm 6 weeks out from RNY and dealing with regular vomiting. There's not really any rhyme or reason to it. Something I ate easily yesterday makes me vomit today. Water sometimes. My pills/vitamins sometimes. My family knows now if I say get out of my way, I mean now, as I dive for the bathroom or the sink. My RD told me that some of us are just lucky... lol... and it will pass eventually. Eating slower (glacial pace, chewing a teeny bite a gazillion times) and taking smaller than small bites helps. I actually made it all the way through the day yesterday, until my bedtime pills got stuck on the way down. Hang in there... if it carries on much longer, I'm going to follow up with my clinic again. I suggest you consider the same.

Not a happy, cheary post, be warned

Hi all, I'm feeling much better today. I've done some simple things like decide to not make the greens for the table. Just putting away the cups, floral foam, and scratch collecting greens off the to do list helped a lot! I've made the executive decision to make a turkey early on Xmas eve, that way the men in the house can A. Lift it! and B. Eat their own dinner and finally C. I can take some down to my daughter. She, being 38 weeks pregnant has been given 12 hour call on both Xmas eve and Xmas day (not sure they thought that one through) and her husband has decided to go to him families traditional Xmas eve party 2 hours away. I said no way to her coming home to an empty house even if all she's doing is eating and going to sleep, so I'm spending the night there for support and just in case someone decides to be a Christmas baby! Feeling much more relaxed today. I'm trying to decide if I'm up to 7 hours in the car tomorrow to go have some face time with Dad, something that would heal us both! Just not sure I'm up to it, and I know there is no way to talk anyone into driving me! I know he'd understand, and be upset if I jeopardize my health, but he's also 97 and grieving as well. I wish we had transporters!

Its so funny, I had some jeans I bought that were way small and I put them aside. I guess I waited 2 weeks too long because when I pulled them out yesterday they looked like circus pants!

When's A Good Time To Exercise

The best time for me to exercise is in the morning. I wake up at 630a and make breakfast. Send the kids off to school and by 9am I'm dropping my youngest off at hourly care for 2 hours. I usually start my walk around 930a. I walk 2 miles outside and then I go back and pick up my kiddo. I prefer to walk outside, we do have a treadmill in the garage but it's too boring. When I had 1 kid I used to workout at night after my husband got home from work. Mornings work best for me. I walk 2 miles, 3 times a week.

    The Scale...my New Obsession

Why are you upset? Do you actually think you have gained 7 lbs of fat? 1 lb = 3500 calories. 7 lbs = 24,500 calories. Did you eat 24,500 calories one of those days? Of course you didn't! So what else weighs a pound? How about 2 glasses of Water? Bingo. There are 14 glasses of water hiding in your body. And you can lose ALL of them in three and a half hours just by sweating and peeing. Please calm down. You're doing fine! Case in point: yesterday, I lost 4 lbs between 6am and 11am. I'm not excited OR upset by this, because I know it is WATER weight. Most people will probably tell you to stop weighing yourself every day, and switch to once a week, or even to stop weighing yourself entirely. I would tell you to weigh yourself MORE often, so you will see the water phenomenon for yourself, and no longer find it so upsetting. The amount of water in your body tissues fluctuates constantly, depending on many metabolic processes. In most people, it's a few pounds EVERY DAY, and they aren't aware of it because they don't strip down and weigh themselves hourly. But whether you know it or not, you're gaining and losing pounds of water all day long. Try to keep the numbers in perspective, and be proud of your accomplishments. You ARE losing fat, it just takes a little bit longer for the results to show up on the scale. Best wishes on your journey!
  6. Definitely would be interested in hearing about how Jenny C. works out for you. Soon after being de-banded, I went to WW and quit after the first week and gaining five pounds. Points plan just gives me a little too MUCH freedom. I did have success with Jenny Craig after I had my son -- 16 years ago!!!!!!! So, I've thought about it. And, hey, it worked for Kirstie Alley. As she says on the cover of this week's People magazine, "If I can do it, anyone can." Arrgh. Elizabeth
  7. What an experience it is having the band out. I can finally taste and enjoy my food. No soda for 3 yrs, or eating and drinking at the same meal. I feel so good to be able to honestly feel full because I had a balanced meal. Of course I have been celebrating by having all of the foods I have missed also, but enough is enough and after trying to do WW on my own all week and failing, I realize I need help so I went to Jenny Craig. My thinking was, I'll just use them to get off the 1st 15 lbs, then i'll go to WW. After seeing how warm and sincere the people are at the center I went to, I joined for a yr and made a committment to get to 165 lbs. I'm at my all time high of 229 now. Wish me luck. I am happy with my decision. Karel

    Till band do us part!

Well, I definitely cannot give you any professional advice. Please let me say that up front, just what I have observed. I have seen wonderful sucess stories going in and out our doors each day though. I have attended a couple of support group sessions here at the office and will be attending one tonight. It seems everyone varies quite a bit on when they lose though. Some patients lose quite a bit at first, others don't. Some patients really start losing after their first fill and others it may take a few. The loss seems to happen for everyone but at different times. I would have to say at this practice I have seen a lot of patients lose six to eight pounds every six weeks during the first year as an average. Hope that helps a little. I would not hesitate to call your surgeon's office with any questions you may have about what to expect during this post op stage. Do you have a support group? Honestly, that is where I have learned the most on what to expect. Leslie
  9. One of the things that the class I am taking requires is that I document my journey daily in some way. They of course suggest that I write, but others have video rerecorded what was going on. I've decided to do this. First of all I hate my hand writing and secondly keeping it on my PC allows me to make changes in my history. I want to capture the raw emotion of what I am feeling without being able to process through it at a later date and then altering the history in any way. I think I've made a good start at doing so that in my first entry. Please put up any editing, grammar, or spelling mistakes I might make and PLEASE feel free to respond if you want to. I need your help, rather it be encouragement or criticism. So here it goes. Yesterday I start my first day of real exercise. I used my stationary bike and rode for 6 minutes after Breakfast and lunch. This excited me as I actually followed through to some degree. I had actually planned to start this weeks ago and my plan was to ride for 30 minutes. But I must focus on the small steps. It taken me years to get where I am at, how can I expect to start at anywhere near a medium level on my first day! I think fear of the failure to reach a high level or medium level is what kept me from trying earlier. I need to lose this fear if I am to walk through this journey. As I look back at my past, this has been the reason that I have failed so many diets. This is the reason I've quit almost everything in my life. I am a classic underachiever, if I can't do it perfectly it's not worth doing and I quit. Today I will change that and I will try to meet yesterday's "achievement". I will try to do that 3rd period of exercise after dinner and I will not look at it as a defeat if a should not. Each day I will sets reasonable goals for myself. I will give myself positive message as much as possible. I will forgive myself and try again when I fail. These are things that I had learned to do when I first got sober 33 years ago. How the have I forgotten them! Today is a new day and I pray that I will make the changes that I need to prolong my life.

    Thinkin' about this

Hello Barbara: Welcome to LBT! You will find plenty of resources and information on this web-site. I guess the first place to start is with insurance. Does your insurance, presuming you have insurance cover WLS? If yes, then is Dr. Virginia part of the insurance network? If you don't have insurance, do you have the funding necessary to pay for the expense of the WLS with Dr. Virginia? Any type of WLS requires life-style changes, which do not occur over night. Rather it evolves over time with the help of medical technology, whether it be banding or by-pass. In that regards, you have to ask yourself are you ready for that??? I have to wonder if you are ready for a change via WLS, because you sound somewhat hesitant about giving up some of your favorite foods. The Band is a tool that requires a lot of discipline and work. I personally have never found anything easy about Banding. I work it every day by the food choices I make, the daily calories I consume and the exercise I partake in 5X a week. However, I find it to be an effective tool if I am willing to work it. Are you ready for that? If you are, then the results will amaze you. If you are not ready for that, then keep doing your research and talk to other people who have had WLS. Best of luck with your journey!

    counting calories????

Well the nutritionist told me to eat between 700-900 a day, I have on had two fills and I am starving. I work out 5 times a week burning 400-500 calories a session. Thats why I wanted to know if anyone else is deducting amount burned from their intake.

    thinking about it

I am a nurse too, I used to do 7-12 hour shifts in a row and then I was off for a week. So I relate to your question. If you read through the forum you'll find a wealth of information. Eating at regular hours is not really an issue, you can always grab a piece of cheese or a Protein bar if you are hungry. Weight loss will significantly improve comorbidities. sleep apnea seems to go away from what most here write. Diabetes typically goes into remission, labs improve. Most of all being a nurse and walking around for 12 hours is MUCH easier after weight loss! Research, read, study, find everything you can. Research various WLS types, doctors, obesity studies, the works. Leave nothing out. Just know what you are getting into so you can be prepared to get this done. ANY WLS type is going to be tough, it's hard losing weight. I can't do it the traditional way, it's just too hard. No self control.... call it what you will. I still can't do it. Banding is hard but it's the kind of hard we can do, our population. It makes weight loss possible for the first time ever. I understand your issues related to food/meals/nursing. If I can help please let me know.
  13. Hi, all! My name is Julie, and I'm having lap-band surgery. (Hi, Julie...) I've been overweight all my life, but in the past few years it's been creeping up on me. And then I had a baby a year ago, and things went downhill fast. My mother is on dialysis as a result of Type 2 diabetes, and she can't walk unassisted. Having a young child has made me realize what I missed out on as a kid with my mom (and what she's missing out on now), and I want to make changes now rather than wait for my health to take a nose dive. I also want to be able to crawl around and run after my son, while I can still keep up with him! I'm working with Dr. Michael Snyder in Denver, and I've just about done with all my pre-op appointments - one last visit to my primary care doctor next week and I can schedule my surgery! I'm self-pay, thanks to working at a small business and having an exclusion on our group coverage for bariatric surgery, so once my husband and I get our Christmas bonuses I'll be able to set the date. I'm shooting for mid-January - huzzah! So, hello everyone! I'm glad to be here!

    The Pre-Op Diet

Every doctor is different so you will want to follow what they tell you to do but for me, I did 4 weeks low carb, high protien then 2 weeks full liquid protien shakes. I lost about 15 pounds. It was rough but well worth it. Doc said my liver looked great!
  15. Well, I did it. I went to see the surgeon to discuss LB. He thinks I am a. Excellent candidate for it... The office staff was very nice in answering questions. I have a physical and appt for RD scheduled next week. Provided insurance approves everything my surgery could be as early as the end of August. I have looked forward to this for over 5 years. Why am I so scared? Fear of failure?? Like all other attempts to loss weight. Fear of surgery? What if Something goes wrong. I am not telling my family I am doing this (obviously hubby knows... Not kids, my mom or anyone else) No one can "I told you so" if it doesn't work. Are these normal feelings?
  16. I had to stay in hospital a few more days because the drain was still producing fluid and the xrays were in conclusive but got the all clear today. I'm so excited to start my new life and so grateful to be given this chance to get my health back. I have no scales around so have no idea what i weigh and for the first time in my life i don't care! I know that after a week of hardly any food (first four days was nil by mouth) i can't help but lose and it will be all downhill from here. Well apart from a few bumps in the road and hold ups but at least i know from experience after reading here that i can expect that and not to worry, it's normal. I don't have any pain and feel amazing, i have more energy than before surgery. I'm going to catch up on all the posts i missed and i'll be back with all the questions!

    See you all

In a couple of weeks! Leaving tomorrow on a mission trip. Will be back on the 17th. Then start my pre-op diet on the following Tuesday! I am almost looking forward to it!!
  19. Hi everyone! I have been reading the different posts on the site for a couple of weeks now. It has really been a wealth of knowledge, and has answered so many of my questions. I thank all of you for that. I have been thinking about having this surgery for about a year now. I am having my surgery in Atlanta, Georgia with Dr. Christopher Hart. My scheduled surgery date is September 16th. I have one more test to go through tomorrow night (Sleep Study) and I will have all of the testing out of the way. The waiting is just so difficult. I am ready to get started. I am very happy I found this site. It is nice to know that someone out there is going through or has been through the same thing.

    6 wk post op - down 30lbs ( wohooo )

My surgery was April 8th. I am down 29 lbs thus far. Next week is my one month appointment. Today I told my self I am going to make 60 grams of protein. I just drank the nastiest protein drink mix with the Gosh awful EAS AdvanEDGE shake. I ate some yogurt (15 grams). I am at 42g and I did that ricotta bake in the cupcake pans so I am thinking one of those will put me at 50-52. Wish me luck!
  21. My 'three week stall' hit at 2.5 weeks and didn't lose an ounce- the scale actually went up twice- for 2 weeks. Then I dropped 5lbs over night. Just try and keep your protein high and keep your fluid intake up and the scale will go. BTW- I had lost 26lbs when mine hit and I'm currently in another stall and have been since Christmas. It sucks- but it's all part of the process
  22. Hi everybody! My surgeon suggested that I go to this website as it's a great source of information, support, etc. I only ust started this particular journey last week, with my first visit with my surgeon, nutritionist, and insurance advocate (called a Navigator). I haven't completely decided whether or not to have the surgery and to be honest, I'm not sure what's holding me back. I spoke with my therapist about it yesterday and we determined that I'm probably afraid of the change it will bring about. Most people don't handle change well and I'm no different. It takes me a little while to get acclimated and for the change to become a new normal. So, I think a lot of my fear is based on the fear of not feeling "comfortable" within myself. Don't know if that makes any sense. Anyway, I look forward to reading through as many posts as I can and being an active member of this site. Jodi

    Losing Motivation

It looks like you are doing wonderfully! :tongue2: 10 pounds in 1 or 2 months is awesome! Remember, even though we want it gone fast 1-2 lbs per week is normal and healthy... Keep in mind, this is not a diet, its a lifestyle! (I just started the process but I could imagine it getting annoying if you focus just on bland food) Add stuff to your food. Don't be too afraid! What do you think is missing? Add spices to your foods. With onion, garlic, salt, pepper lemon or lime wine Cream sauces- with skim milk. salsa ginger pickles hot/sweet peppers easy ideas- frozen meals (lean cuizine/smart ones has some tastey low calorie stuff); subway sandwiches (veggie delight with pickles); turkey and low fat/fat free cheese rolled up with lettuce; tuna with mustard and pickles (lol I love pickles can you tell-gives it tons of flavor); egg whites with salsa... I was told by my doctor that I pretty much can eat other foods then just low calorie after my full food phase BUT its all about portion control and moderation. So if I decide to have a higher calorie meal, I will just be sure to compensate with exercise or watch the other meals... and just have a smaller portion of it. I would think that if you look at this as a strict diet, you will give up. But look at it as a lifestyle and allow yourself to have other foods as a TREAT once in a while, then you will feel more satisfied. Be good all week then allow yourself one or two meals/snacks on the weekend that you normally wouldn't have, as a reward... But remember moderation and portion. Sorry it was so long! Good Luck!
  24. I'm just venting here. I had VSG on 11/12/12. Did really well the first 6 weeks. Once I went back to work in January, it's like the genie said "Poof! No more weight loss for you!" I have struggled and struggled. I am at my breaking point now. I have even avoided the message boards here for weeks because I get even more depressed reading about everyone's success. Nothing I try seems to work for me anymore. I am exercising like I should. I am eating what I should, and avoiding what I shouldn't be eating. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get beyond that one hash mark on the scale. I have an appointment with the surgeon next week and I really don't want to go to it. I feel like a complete failure when it comes to this surgery. I have lost 42 lbs. so far, but that was all before January. Since then - nothing! Granted, I haven't gained any either, but I still feel like a complete failure. I was religiously logging my food on MFP, but found that if I did that, all I did was make myself feel hungry and deprived so I had to let up on being so obsessive about that. Now, I just don't know what to do. I am about ready to resign myself to the fact that I am just going to be this way the rest of my life.
  25. The day of surgery 1/08/13 my bmi was 39.. I weight 234.. I'm 5ft 2in.. My weight 6 weeks later is 209.. My surgeon want me to get down to 130lbs. I haven't been that weight since I was 14 and I'm now 40. But I know I can do it cuz it gets easier as each day goes by! Good luck to everyone on this journey
