    This surgery is bullshit...

You may be one of the unlucky ones whose hunger doesn't go away with surgery. And I will say that your surgeon's idea that you must stay on 800 cal a day to lose weight flies in the face of scienc. Stand back, I'm going to use MATH! If you were maintaining your (heavy) weight by eating, say, 3500 calories a day, then that's your maintenance for that weight. So now, if you are eating 800 calories, you are in a deficit of 2700 calories a day, which means you'd lose three quarters of a pound per day on average. If you're eating 1200 calories, you're in a deficit of 2300 calories a day, which means you'd lose two thirds of a pound per day on average. Yes, different macros (protein, carbs, fat, alcohol) do work differently in your body, but ultimately your body is bound, like everyone's, to the calories in-calories out equation. I suspect what happened to you is twofold: 1. You're in a lengthy stall (search up "three-week stall", it happens to almost all of us, it's incredibly frustrating, it's not always at 3 weeks, and it can last a month for some people). It's because your body has depleted its glycogen and is probably somewhat dehydrated (it's hard to drink enough right after surgery), and your fluid balance is adjusting itself. 2. You're frustrated and not tracking what you eat. Unfortunately, this is something that has to be done. You can't fix your diet if you don't know what your diet is. And that means, at least for me, pre-prepping meals and weighing things out. I just pop a tray in the microwave a few times a day and have it all specced out. I use MyMacros+ for tracking. One of the big culprits is cooking oil/fat. How many people measure the oil they put in a pan to cook their, say, chicken breast? Nobody except bariatric patients—everyone else just sploops some oil in a pan until it looks right. I actually have a bar jigger on the counter so I can measure in 1/2 ounces and full ounces. Track your food. Literally track your food. If you find you're not losing weight on 800 cal a day, spend a week eating 1000 cal a day to see if it'll shock your system. I am at about 1400-1500 cal a day a little short of three months post-op, because I work physical work and am very active (gym, running, hiking, etc.) and need the calories to be able to function. But I still track each and every day. The surgery isn't bullshit. If it were possible to just severely restrict calories without it, nobody would get the surgery. But there are thousands of people here, myself included, who found success with the surgery that wouldn't have been possible without it.

    Can't wait

That’s weird that you already had your pre-op appointment a month ago but no surgery date scheduled. Most of the time the surgery date gets scheduled first then the pre-op appointment gets scheduled. I knew when my surgery date 4 months prior which was scheduled on 11/01/2021. The end of September I was given my pre-op appointment 2 weeks before my surgery date. My pre-op and surgery appointments were done by the scheduling department at the hospital I was having my surgery done. What’s concerning is that is you stated your doctor is so busy. So if he is so busy did his office schedule your pre-op appointment or did the hospital? Can you call your doctor’s office and talk with one of the staff about your surgery to see what is happening. You really need to start getting some answers of when your surgery is happening. Hang in there.
  3. strictures, when they happen, are almost always during the first three months post-surgery - although I agree I'd probably let my clinic know what's going on just in case (they CAN happen later, but it's pretty rare - and you really can't keep anything down at all - not just meats (I had two of them - I couldn't even keep fluids down after about a week))

    This surgery is bullshit...

Husky mama mentioned using the Baritastic app. I’ve been using this app since I started the required weight loss program prior to my surgery. BTW my gastric sleeve surgery was 11/01/21. I love using this app. I found out there is a timer. My nutritionist suggested that when eating there should be at least 20 seconds between each bite. That means put your fork down and chew your bites thoroughly then swallow. There are exceptions to the rule with foods such as scrambled eggs, yogurt etc. With that said this will help slow down your eating. The question is are you eating too fast and finishing your meals in less than 20 to 30 minutes. If you have a scale go back and start weighing your food again. Finally if your weighing yourself everyday day you’re not going to see changes. Pick a specific day and time to weigh yourself. Then weigh yourself once a week on the that specific day you chose and you may see some progress. I wish you the best and please don’t give up. You’ve gotten a lot of good advice and I hope you will read them use these to help you succeed with your weight loss. Keep us updated on your progress as all of us want to continue to support you. 🙏🙏🙏
  5. I was on the milk diet 3 pints of semi skimmed milk and no added sugar 2/50 gram post of yoghurt juice and tea and coffee for 2 weeks but I was ok on it didn't feel hungry and still don't 12 week out of surgery and 45ls down
  6. I had a revision on 11/5 due to GERD and regain due to my thyroid. I noticed the difference immediately. However the past few days I noticed slight discomfort but nothing like before. I’m a little concerned because it’s been 3 weeks and I’m only down 13 pounds.

I was cleared after a week to go to soft including chicken. The only things I didnt get sick on were the protein pretty much in the beginning. I just was careful on amounts and still am because I would get so ill. GL

    Liquid diet

Protein shakes and powders for protein goals. There are MANY brands, so experiment. Drink 3-4 a day or as your clinician prescribed. Sugar-free popsicles and sugar-free jello for treats. Broth for variety and flavor. Protein water if you need additional protein. Water, water, water. Drink 64 oz a day or more. You can add flavor packets to your water, such as Snapple, Wylers, Crush, Hawaiian Punch, Crystal Light. (I buy them at the dollar store.) The first week is the hardest because you are feeling withdrawal symptoms. The second week is easier.

    Question

To break a stall you may have to heat MORE. It's counter-intuitive, but your metabolism may have gone into "starvation mode" hanging on to as much as possible. You may still lose inches during a stall and your body will eventually catch up. To speed up the process, try increasing your daily calorie consumption to 1000-1200 for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

    This surgery is bullshit...

Everyone has covered the mental aspects, so I won't repeat. But I'm curious... 1. Do you feel restriction when you eat? At six weeks out, it should be very apparent. What happens if you overeat? 2. What kind of food are you eating? Are you following an eating plan? Or just eating whatever? 3. Do you eat meals? Graze? Both? What is your style of eating? 4. Are you hungry all the time? Or do you eat out of boredom, as a coping mechanism, etc? The folks on this site are super-knowlegeable and might be able to help you figure out what's going on if you provide more information.
  11. Didn't cancel cuz I didn't want to go through with it but I did cancel a week into my Pre-Op diet because I was in the middle of my semester. I realized I wouldn't be able to manage both so now finally going through the procedure in my break time. And definitely sounds like a panic ridden cancellation. May be you can reevaluate why you wanted this procedure and what is stopping you from getting it - Like your fears and hesitations. Hope you can find a way through it and make the best possible decision for yourself.
  12. Hi, I'm 3 weeks post-op (Mini gastric bypass) and I'm in need of some WLS buddies. I have a couple very supportive people and a handful of generally supportive people in my corner but I still feel pretty alone in this. My friends are happy when I'm excited about something and generally sympathetic at some of my struggles but it's not the same as someone who has or is going through it ya know? Someone who could be just as excited as I am when reintroducing a food back into your diet (today was cheese!!!!!) or someone who can understand when you talk about going from being hungry All The Time to now looking at the time and being like oh **** I need to eat! The support group in my area/through my surgeons office meets twice a month and I haven't had a chance to attend a meeting. And I searched on here to see if there was a chat room or discord server or something with no luck. Anyone else feeling like this?
  13. Omg I wished you posted this before my surgery on 11/8. I did a week of liver shrinking diet and loss 15 lbs. Completed all the necessary procedures too and went to my surgery appointment. However….. I was on time but have been having second thoughts the night before and I even had a consultation with my therapist friend (free counseling session 😂) I spent at least 2 hours with my friend and talked about my reservations. She even advised me to cancel or reschedule because of my reservations. I had my consultation with my surgeon on 10/11 and the surgery date on 11/8 was offered. Off course I took it cos I’m overwhelmed but in reality I should have waited for more time but what’s my excuse? Food relationship and the holiday parties and meals. However, after getting my behavioral health evaluation and preop, I was ready. I was so happy with the result of the liver shrinking diet cos in my head look, I can do it without the surgery but I only did the diet because I have a goal date which is the surgery date. I even chatted with my parents about my decision. My dad didn’t want me to get the surgery but my mom was encouraging since she knows how many times I failed doing different diet and exercise program after program. So, day of surgery came. I checked in 30 minutes earlier and I was sent to pre-surgery department. My check in appointment was at 9:00 and surgery at 11:00. I changed to my hospital gown and got comfortable. It’s funny that every commercial was Taco Bell. However, each time I checked the clock I was panicking inside. My surgeon and his team was late and my surgery was pushed until 1:00 PM. In my head, it’s my chance to cancel it and the universe was telling me to cancel it. I wished I listened to the voice inside me but I’m glad I didn’t. I’m glad I did the surgery because I don’t trust myself and if I canceled, I will probably go back to my unhealthy lifestyle. Today is my day 21 post opt and I lose another 20 lbs. It’s totally life changing and tracking my intakes help. I found myself now drinking more water a day to stay hydrated and planning more my meals. I don’t see my surgery as an excuse for weight loss but a tool to help me get back to the healthy side.

    This surgery is bullshit...

I had a chat with my preop team about the LSG I had on 11/8. My preop provider says if patients are using the surgery as an excuse to lose weight faster, they will fail. It’s a process, a tool to help with weight loss. Even with my behavioral health evaluation for the surgery, I expressed that this is a tool for me and not a magic wand to lose weight in a blink of an eye. So far, I’m 20 lbs lighter after 21 days. My post opt week 4 starts tomorrow and it’s a learning process. I don’t count my calorie intake but I record all my intakes including water and clear liquids. I wish you the best of luck and maybe get a weight loss therapist.

    This surgery is bullshit...

800 calories long term is unrealistic. I stalled like everyone else and as soon as I was able to eat 1000-1200 calories I started losing the weight because my body was no longer in starvation mode. Try switching it up, try new exercises and see if that helps. I was 210 on my surgery date and am now 170 and my surgery was 9 weeks ago. But I realized I like everyone else who is starving themselves on here that didn’t work for me. Eating a balanced diet that yes Includes carbs has worked for me. What may work for another won’t necessarily work for you and no doctors don’t always know what they’re doing. My doctor didn’t even tell me about so many things that I eventually learned on my own or even on here talking to others. I’m sorry you’re having a rough time and for anyone being judgmental you clearly needed the surgery right so don’t go around bashing anyone else. Just cause you had it easier or your situation worked better. You don’t know what someone is going through and what they’re doing. You y very well could be an ongoing health issue they need to look into. Best of luck.
  16. Yes I did! I cancelled in May, the day before the surgery. A few friends I had told close to the surgery date reacted much differently and I let those worries, thoughts and opinions affect my attitude and eventually my decision. I was scared and had worries I didn’t before. The next week I was so angry at the choice I made, letting that affect my choice that I decided to reschedule and I had the surgery in June. Best decision I made.

    Liquid diet

I start mine on Wednesday for 2 weeks as well! All I get is protein shakes and clear fluids. Let's do it together!! I was supposed to have done all this last month and I was so psyched and happy to get started on the diet. Now I'm just angry and stressed out with all the delays and ruined holidays. (I also have to quarantine 2 weeks before surgery and 2 weeks after.) Plus I've gained 6lbs. since last month.
  18. Reading all the cases of fatigue and exhaustion worry me. Having to quarantine 2 weeks before, 2 weeks after, getting only protein shakes and clear liquids only for the 2 weeks of pre-surg. diet, not being able to go workout at the gym, or swim, or be outside because the weather is terrible. No holidays with family--second year in a row--and having been waiting for 6 months since being cleared for surgery has already depressed me. I don't think I can take months of feeling horrible and exhausted afterward. I feel like I've already lost a year of my life because of all the unnecessary and even bogus bs. The program I'm in throws in everything but the kitchen sink, charges from the patient obscenely for it, and leaves the patient twisting in the wind unendingly. ugh.

    Liquid diet

I did my 2-week pre-op liquid diet twice: the first time the surgery was cancelled the night before (Covid); the second time was right before my actual surgery. I was elated to be on the liquid diet both times because it brought me that much closer to my visions of a better life!

How did u do 2 weeks of a liquid diet I start mine Wed until surgery Sent from my SM-A426U using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I love this thread!! Can anyone else also eat a food only once? I no longer crave or like sweet things (yoghurt, over night coats, honey, etc). I also immediately stop eating if I dont love the taste of something. I wish I could say it’s because of discipline or at least a conscious decision but it’s not. The moment I taste something that I either dont like or just dont care for that much I immediately lose my appetite. That’s completely new!!! The strangest thing I noticed though is that I can’t eat things more than once in a row. For example: I made bean soup and had so much left over that I planned on eating it throughout the next week. The first time I had it it tasted so so good. The second time it made me naseous (so I stopped) and the third time just the smell alone made me nearly 🤢. Same thing with other foods. Oh! And I HATE garlic!!! So weird! Used to love it and put it in pretty much anything. My sense of smell also seems heightened and sensitive. So much has changed!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I got my surgery end of September and stopped losing weight for three weeks. It was agonizing!! On top of that I couldnt use the bathroom and felt super nauseous. I regretted my surgery and cried and felt very sorry for myself. Once I was able to use the bathroom (talked to my nutritionist about what to do) everything turned out just fine. I’m only (almost) 9 weeks out but the last four weeks I’ve been losing 3-4lbs per week. What I’m saying is: don’t give up. Don’t stress out. Trust the process and follow your diet. This will work (I’m also trying to keep that in mind for next time when I stall 🙃)

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Checking in. I will be 2 weeks post op tomorrow. On Wednesday my surgeon cleared me to start soft food. I have been eating fish that I grill and I have been using my Instapot to pressure cook some things. I am not interested in puréed. I can live on apple sauce and fish for a long time. Weight loss has stopped at 30 pounds in 3 weeks which I am fine with. I haven’t lost much post op but I lost so much Pre-op I am not surprised. The Dermabond is finally starting to come off my incisions. No problems so far tolerating food. I am slowing sampling different things. I am avoiding sugar. I so far have nothing but positives to say about my experience. For me this isn’t about a number on a scale. This is about my health and I already feel more energetic and am not longer using my CPAP.
  24. I hope everything goes well next week for you I did have doubts the morning of surgery and when I got to the hospital the surgeon came and seen me and said that he needed someone else to do the surgery if he couldn't get anyone he couldn't do it so I thought if he doesn't do it I'm not coming back but he ho 10 minutes later he come back and said are you ready of course I said yep let's do it now I'm 12 weeks out and 45lbs down and glad I had it done

    This surgery is bullshit...

Sorry to hear things have been rough. Tracking calories does not work for me, I’ve learned from other eating plans that it makes me obsessive, and is not sustainable for me. Perhaps talking with a nutritionist about what you are eating each day might help? I follow the rules of 60 or more grams of protein each day, no added sugar, 5 g or less fat per serving, and eat until I am satisfied. No more. During the work week, I eat the same thing every day from breakfast until afternoon snack. Dinners are healthy and usually involve some form of chicken or turkey. I know this might not work for everyone, but it makes it easy for me and my weight loss has been great. Ultimately, each person is different, and what works for me and my program may not work best for you. I hope you find something that works for you, and allows you to use your new tool to the fullest!
