    Overwhelmed and scared... but hopeful?

It's so strange to be told not to eat vegetables, isn't it? After so many decades of "get your five a day!" But it's not forever. You only have a little room for food, especially at first, and so it's not "no vegetables", it's "vegetables only after protein", and at first there's not room for vegetables. It will get better, and fast. And you'll learn how to re-eat. The best part (though I had sleeve, not bypass) is that things I thought I would be tempted by aren't tempting at all. Last night I went to a birthday party and there was a whole tray of cookies and candies. None of it looked good and the size of the brownies actually made me a little queasy. In the Before Times, I'd have knocked down two or even three brownies. Now? Meh.

Guys who started over 400 lbs.

You're right about where I was when I started (I was 392, 375 when I started the weigh-in process, bounced between 350-400 for ten years). I am almost five weeks out and a week from tomorrow I can start slowly re-incorporating weights back into my life (the barbell is one form of therapy...). Hoping to get down to 240 or so. I was 220 when I was playing rugby and had a flat stomach, so I think 240 some (*cough25cough*) years later is a decent goal for me. Currently in my three-week stall. Sigh. Get going body, I'm feeding you plenty.
  3. Hi EsojLabina. The liver shrinking diet is hard, no doubt about that! I don't think anyone breezes through it without at least a few days of wishing the weeks away. Try distracting yourself - do some DIY, engage in a hobby, go for walks - anything to take your mind off food. Do you mean you're thinking you won't be able to eat like before? Because that is actually true. The upside is your body won't want to eat like before post-bypass, and that's the biggest tool to help change your mindset around food. But honestly, changing your mindset about food needs to begin pre-surgery, and if you have a complex relationship with food like binge-eating disorder or emotional eating, then you really need to see a bariatric psychologist to get on top of that, or the issues will follow you post surgery, and can manifest as depression.

    Not Losing

Is it possible that being too low in the caloric intake scale can actually stall weight loss? I would think at a deficit, no matter how small, weight loss would still happen, but I've read that the body can stop losing and try to maintain bc it thinks it's in trouble. Maybe someone can shed more light on this?
  5. Yup. Totally normal. That feeling for me went away around week 3.

    No weight loss

I'm 10 weeks post-op (RYGB). I gained 10LBS the first week post-op and was almost in tears over it! Slowly, within the coming weeks the weight loss cranked up, until I shot past my weight on surgery day, and just kept going. Now, I've been at the same number for the last 7 days, but I'm tracking everything I consume, and I'm getting my walks in daily, so I know I'm doing right. Typically I'll have 3-4 days of loss followed by a week of "homeostasis" for lack of a better description, where I'm guessing my body is just getting used to the new normal. Keep on doing things by the book, and keep your chin up! Know you've got a lot of friends here and we're all rooting for you!! Please let us know when you make that breakthrough and start shedding

    Moms that do it all

Sit everyone down and have one of those warm, come together, group hug, family meetings. Explain that Mommy will be out of commission for a couple weeks, so everyone needs to come together in one of those typical warm and fuzzy family moments and agree to pitch in to help out. The best way for you to handle the fatigue and irritability are easy: Close the door, lock it, bolt it, put furniture in front of it, set traps, then go too sleep and watch the TV programs you want to watch for a change. If anyone dares knock on the door, you can either snarl and throw out a small animal carcass as warning, or just shout choice profanity. You know your family, use what will work best. Everyone will need to run their part of the house. This may cause the house to spin in circles, but at least it will be getting run. It is unlikely this will cause any lasting harm, but if it does repair costs can be taken out of allowances. The decision making will be easy: "Yes." They'll need to arrange their own play dates, hopefully in the typical PG or PG-13 way they are now. Cleaning up... well... really, how bad can it get in a couple weeks? Besides, dirt and germs only help everyone's immunity to work better and harder. It's a win-win for everyone involved. Oh, so your surgeon says no caffeine? Bast****. Well, if you've taken my advice, you've locked yourself in your bedroom and will be sleeping snarling at anyone that dares interrupt your solitude . Who needs energy for that? Bask in your new found sloth. . You didn't really give us a scorecard on what your family looks like. But I'll bet they'll answer your call for support as best as they can. Your husband will step up. All those adults you are arranging play dates with will step up and do what needs to be done. Or, in typical fashion, they won't. They're your associates, you know how they'll handle things. When your kids ask you to play, you will be kind and not the least bit irritable. Even if your worst fears occur and nothing get's done your home will still survive and everything will be there when you are able to resume everything you do. Regardless what happens, take some time to deal with your needs for a few weeks. Good luck, Tek
  8. I’ve actually been cooking since week 1 po! Just not for myself but for my husband 😁 (now week 7 po) I really enjoy making his food and I was so worried beforehand that I would lose that completely, or feel envious of other people’s food options/portion sizes but I am actually completely unbothered!! At first I would make a tiny and uncomplicated separate dish for myself, but now I am progressing I am more and more able to ‘merge’ our food 😁 I am sure not everyone feels like this, and you never know how you will end up feeling until you get there, but maybe this gives you a little hope! 🤗

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I am at a weight loss stall for 17 days now. I'm 11 weeks po. Any suggestions for what worked for you? I walk 1.5 hours everyday and eat between 700 - 1,000 calories a day.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Similar situation here. No BP MEDS, off Trulicity, off Lipitor. Glucose dropped to 89, A1c to 5.0, triglycerides to 116. All in 6 weeks

    Moms that do it all

I do alot (but so does Mr. and the Kids), so I can't claim to do it all, LOL. But, I can speak about the energy levels: for the first 2-3 weeks I had very little energy and slept ALOT. Still managed to do what I needed to do during awake hours - including going back to work in week 3 - (just much slower and not as well as I would have liked). It did help that I had a desk job, and the fam did not expect me to do more than I could...that and the youngest in the house is a self-sufficient teenager so... Though sometime after the first month, out of nowhere I got some crazy energizer bunny power (despite the fact that I was one of those that subsisted on very, very, low calories) and its been like that ever since. I'm not sure if it was because the lost weight made it easier, or that all the large amounts of crap that I used to eat no longer slugged my system. Whatever the case, from what I have read on here, the lack of energy is temporary (barring any medical issues), and for alot, energy levels increase exponentially as you get further out. Good Luck! ❤️

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

This is me as well. I had VSG October 5th and I'm STARVING. It's not head hunger, either because I'm not exactly craving anything, and nothing even sounds appetizing to me. The problem with me is I'm lacking nutrients and protein (dummy me ordered my supplies late). But apart from that, I barely even want water, milk (lactose-free and fat-free) or broth. I sip them because I have to, but man...blegh. I knew the hunger would come back but I thought it'd be months after surgery, not days. The liquid stage sucks. I'm definitely looking forward to starting purées next week.
  13. I had this too and still get the occasional burning feeling even now at 7 weeks po. It is A LOT less painful now though (thank goodness!). What helped me was holding a heated (not too hot!) cherry pit pillow on my tummy. Maybe that’ll help you too 💕 hope you feel better soon on congrats and your surgery!
  14. Yes, it's normal. You are healing inside and also your nerves were cut, so they have to regenerate. It takes time. You can get a binder or use a pillow to brace yourself. It does get better within a couple of weeks, I promise.

    Regret?

Are you feeling better yet? I'm six weeks post bypass and glad to find your post because I can relate. The list of foods that don't give me nausea is much shorter than the ones that do. The constant nausea is exhausting and depressing.

Very nice indeed @kristieshannon. And I’m not stunned it’s a size 4. You’re very slim. How did the date go? Congrats on the new job, @Dtrain84. What does it entail? Bought this rib knit skirt & top back in winter & finally wore it last week. And surplus it’s navy! The skirt has one of those sneaky high splits that you don’t notice until you sit down & hello. It’s actually higher than the 2nd pxt shows - reaches to a couple of inches below the knicker line.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

October 12th! Today marks day 4 post op. How’s everyone feeling who’s had it done this past week?
  18. "buyers remorse" is very common the first month or so after surgery. I had it as well. But for almost all of us, it goes away and we're really happy with our choice to have surgery. So just hang in there. I'm a Premier Protein hater, too. I used mostly Syntrax and Unjury products (Syntrax only comes in powder - Unjury now has ready-to-drink, but they didn't back when I had surgery). People's tastes are all really different - just experiment and see if you can find a couple you like. I was a presenter for my clinic's pre-op classes for about three years (until COVID struck). EVERY class someone would ask about hair loss. I could count on it. That and loose skin seem to be people's major concerns. And they were mine as well when I was a pre-op and early post-op. But I think I can speak on behalf of most vets here that we would take either or both of those any day of the week over being morbidly obese again. The hair loss is a minor inconvenience that may or may not happen to you. Not everyone loses hair. I lost hair between months 5-9, but the only reason I knew about it was I noticed about twice the normal number of hair strands in my comb after coming out my just-shampooed hair. Looking in the mirror, I couldn't tell. Even if your loss is more significant than mine, for most people (not all - but most), they're the only ones who notice it.

    Food Before and After Photos

Yesterday was 💩. I had planned an entire day of baking earlier this week but was sidelined with having to spend the day at the bank because of fraud. 🙄 I only managed 3 dozen cookies that came out crispy because I didn’t account for the humidity from rain. And I over baked the cinnamon rolls. 😭 That’s ok, later this week I have have time to make up for it. Death by chocolate cookies and chocolate cookies with peanut butter and milk chocolate chips.

    Depression

I keep a simple notebook journal for my feelings and thoughts. I remember when I start to feel depressed so I can go back and take note. I used to use a calendar with happy, sad, angry, blah faces. When I get to two weeks or more I evaluate the extenuating circumstances around me, like major life changes, allergies or menstrual cycle. If it can’t be logically explained I seek out therapy. It sounds like you know what is causing the problem. Food used to help you cope. Therapy will help you find the root of your feelings and name it, and express it in a healthy way instead of overeating. While you are looking for a therapist (try your WL center first, but there’s lots of online options too) try tracking when you feel like binging and all the stuff going on around you. I’m finding Friday nights very tough. Maybe you’ve been struggling for a long time and need medication and more help. Mental health is physical health. Physical health is mental health too.You did the first step of identifying the problem and the second of asking for help. You will figure it out and what works for you. Keep us posted on your progress. I know you can do this!

    Regret and Depression

The worst i ever had pre surgery was mild situational anxiety after surgery i spiralled out of control to the point of contemplating suicide I was hospitalised for my own safety and got councilling. I suffered panic attacks and high anxiety. I spent 6 weeks on my sister couch curled up in a ball not wanting to do anything it was horrible for me and for my family and friends. I feel better now but if given the choice again i would not have the surgery.
  22. Vent away. Better to release your frustrations than hang on to them ❤️ One day at a time. One hour at a time if need be. This time next week you will likely feel incrementally better. This time next year, today likely will feel like a lifetime ago. Good Luck! ❤️

    Just a taste?

I think my plan is a little different in that no foods are expressly forbidden, as long as you're getting enough protein and staying within a reasonable calorie range. I know in my dieting past that cutting out entire groups of food (for example, on keto), would lead to cravings and bingeing, so I've been trying to allow a bite of everything from time to time. For example, I've started going into work once a week on Fridays, and someone ALWAYS brings donuts. The first two weeks, I was completely uninterested. Last week, I thought I'd give it a try, found a maple bar that someone had already cut a piece off, and cut off a tiny square that was about a bite. Ate it, was shocked at how excessively sweet it was, logged 1/10th of a maple bar in my food journal, and moved on. I haven't wanted another taste since. For me personally, if this will be a lifetime change, I need to learn how to manage unhealthy foods in a reasonable way because I'm not sure it's really realistic to be able to avoid them forever. Others are certainly having different experiences and that's totally fine!
  24. I am extremely picky about after tastes and fake sweeteners. I am not tolerating protein shakes that are milky or clear. Both premier protein which everyone seems to rave about. I am told that making your own is much more palatable. Haven't tried it yet. My surgeon is not forcing protein because it takes a few weeks to absolutely deplete and by then I will be on soft foods. I am really down and regretting the surgery. For right now. I feel like I am just too lazy to lose with diet and exercise, so I made myself miserable instead. I am only 3 days post op and I need to give myself time. My bigger fear is losing my hair, hence the protein worries. Ugh. Not a question or a statement. Just needed to vent for a sec. Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Had sleeve surgery 10/13 so three days post op. Day of surgery was the toughest with soreness and getting water in. But each day since then has been huge improvement with both. One thing I am thankful for is the lack of the hunger feeling. I got it a couple of times but realized it was in my brain and not signals from my body. A couple sips of water easily satisfied that urge. I am very excited about the days and weeks that lie ahead!
