  1. You aren't alone. I had my band to sleeve revision July 2015, and 3 days later, I was hungry, and I haven't stopped being hungry since. I can easily eat at least twice as much as I did with the band. There feels like there is no restriction. I did ask my surgeon if he really did the sleeve after removing the band. I also feel like a failure. I've only lost 12 lbs. since the sleeve surgery. Since my heartburn and acid reflux weren't resolved by the sleeve surgery, my surgeon is suggesting the bypass. I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of having my insides rerouted, but have started to consider it. I wish you good luck, and hope that you find a doctor that can help you resolve the issues you are having.
  2. Let me know when you make your decision please. I will be getting a revision from band to sleeve. I can't wait either!!!!

    April/May sleevers!

had a lapband for 6 years, I LOVED my band, I went from 223 to 139 lbs and I maintained around 145 for years ! However, in order to do that I had to keep the band very tight. I couldn't eat anything before noon or after 6 without pain and suffering. When my body had enough I had shoulder pain and chest pain and never just felt full. I was always dehydrated and ended up with kidney stones twice but i was happy to sacrifice because I was a size 6/8 for the first time in my life ! But live long enough that way and it causes problems (severe reflux) and just misery any time you eat or try too. My surgeon started offering the sleeve and after years of "selling" the band to others (with my personal success as a witness) I asked him to revise me to the sleeve because everyone said how wonderful it was. Well for many it is but for me I hate mine. It's not always the same for someone who has had prior surgery so as I type this today, I have gained 20 lbs since the sleeve and it's a fight (that I'm losing) to not gain more. I had many barium swallows over the years that always showed a dilated pouch. Sorry so long, I pasted it from a prior post lol

    lap band erosion

I am so sorry! I hope your removal goes smoothly. Are you revising?
  5. Yes ! You are not alone ! I was banded in 2007 and did great as well. I revised to sleeve in 2013 and I hate it and Iv gained 20 lbs with it and I'm always hungry and it's truly like I never even had surgery at all of any kind. I never imagined that I would even consider any type if malabsorption procedure but I'm scheduled to revise to a mini bypass in less than 2 weeks and I can't wait to put this small detour (sleeve) behind me and get back to losing weight again !

    May 2015 Sleevers?

I just got my surgery date today - May 6th! I am excited and very nervous at the same time. I am having a revision from the lap band, which I've had nothing but problems from. I start my liquid diet on April 22nd for the 2 weeks before surgery!
  7. Go to another surgeon and ask them to check out your sleeve. They can do an xray and tell you from there what your best course of action will be. Find out from your insurance if they will cover a revision, too, and what you need to do to start the process. What is your typical diet? Do you log your calories and intake? What exercise can you do?
  8. This is really great stuff. I am about to have revision from banding (9years). I have been given the option by my surgeon, and am struggling to decide... but the more I read, the more I am leaning towards the bypass. I had issues with heartburn with the band, but they went away when i had my gallbladder removed. So i wasnt sure if it would come back with the sleeve or not. I have also read a number of people who have gone from band to sleeve say they don't have the restriction they were expecting. I think that would be devastating, if after all Ive been through in the last year, to finally decide, and things dont work. Id be interested to hear what, if any, deciding factors swayed anyone else to the bypass instead of the sleeve?
  9. I am bipolar. I have type b where I lean towards depression. I am on 5 different medications for my disease. I have a healthy relationship with my psychiatrist and he was one of my support persons prior and during wls. none of my medications were changed. I have some real lows and we were about to change one of them but I pulled out of it without tweaking my med's. yes you may have a harder time losing wt. but being overweight and doing nothing about it I think, would cause me to be more depressed and out of control. wls is having control of that aspect of your life. it will make you feel better. but don't expect wls to correct your bipolar. or your med's you are on. I wish I could take those medications out of my life but I know I never will be able to. you have to be very compliant with the lap band. if you don't think you can you need to go to another surgery. I have the band but might be revising. I had the band fail, my doctors both pcp and surgeon fail which caused depression so I have failed too. it is very very depressing. I cry when I talk with my husband about what is going on with me. but now I am looking forward to talking with my surgeon and the possibility of revision to a malasorbtion type of surgery. I wish you luck. as long as you put in the work the band is terrific.
  10. I'm also currently in the process of revising to a different surgery from the band. I chose the RNY bypass over the sleeve. Here are my reasons: I've already had to have my band replaced once, so I want to give myself the best chance of success and the least chance of having to have yet ANOTHER surgery. I'm tired of surgery! I know I have metabolic issues from both PCOS and from the limited way the band forced me to eat, so I think I need the metabolic boost of malabsorbtion that the RNY will provide. The sleeve as a stand-alone surgery is still too new to have much information about long-term statistics available. After being burned with the band, I'm very wary about "projected" outcomes, since the band was projected to have similar long-term results as the bypass when I was first banded. After suffering from SEVERE acid reflux with my first band, and having it when my second band started giving me trouble, I don't want to take the risk of having it again. The sleeve is known to cause or worsen acid reflux. I've already experienced choking on stomach acid at night even though I was sleeping upright, and I don't want to do it again.

    April/May sleevers!

When i consulted with dr. Rod about resleeving I was told he doesn't think it's a good idea and recommends the revision to MGB instead, I did a ton of research and have to say I agree, he is doing mine on 4/23.
  12. Band7 I did well with the band, had a revision and has gained 22 pounds since having it. I have had a upper GI and only about 50 percent of my stomach removed. My problem is will do it, trying to decide

    Band to MGB

I did great with the band but revised to sleeve only to find myself steadily gaining more and more weight, I'm revising to MGB on 4/23 and I couldn't be more excited ! Iv read so many great things about it, I'm ready to beat this once and for all !
  14. Adriej

    Just approved

Newnewme, Thank you for that information. I've gotten myself so excited about the possibility of revision I hoped I wouldn't have to go through it all over again..I want to be post op yesterday lol.
  15. I'm not sure about the liquids for some reason Iv never been a big drinker of anything so the band just increased what was already a struggle with the whole don't drink and eat thing and wait 30 mins. I didn't revise only because of reflux, It was managed with Prilosec well enough but more so because of just sick of the whole lifestyle that came with the band. Yes I could have loosened or unfilled but only with weight gain. Iv not had even a slight bit of reflux since removing the band but I also had a hiatal hernia repair during the revision. I had many barium swallows over the years since I worked in the surgeons office, a few dilated pouches that I would refill for about a month to correct but they never fully corrected. My esophagus is still dilated even in my recent X-rays.
  16. @@Band07 Thanks for sharing your story. I've had my band since 2009, and never had any band caused problems. I always try to take notes when someone such as yourself (a lapband veteran) explains their problems/experiences, to try and learn from them. And to prevent any issues of my own! You state you were "always dehydrated"....was this because you physically couldn't take in enough fluids? You asked your surgeon to revise you from band to sleeve BECAUSE of reflux issues? Has the reflux changed since revision? Did your surgeon monitor you, using fluoroscopy, while you had your band? Thanks again for sharing your story, Best wishes

Nervous - Does Anyone Else Feel This Way

Thanks for your kind words, JLMet. Another poster on this site who's also gone through a revision said my experience is neither normal nor acceptable, and I should definitely check back in with my dietician. I'll give her a call tomorrow. In the interim, I'm going to take a page from your book and stop weighing myself every day.
  18. Take this for what it is, just my personal thoughts and experiences but that being said, I had a lapband for 6 years, Iv had the sleeve for a year and a half and I worked for a bariatric surgeon for almost 7 years. I LOVED my band, I went from 223 to 139 lbs and I maintained around 145 for years ! Of the hundreds of patients Iv worked with over the years, very few (maybe 30/40% ) have kept off weight and been successful long term with the band. My surgeon started offering the sleeve and after years of "selling" the band to others (with my personal success as a witness) I asked him to revise me to the sleeve because everyone said how wonderful it was. Well for many it is but for me I hate mine. It's not always the same for someone who has had prior surgery so as I type this today, I have gained almost 20 lbs since the sleeve and it's a fight (that I'm losing) to not gain more. That being said, if I was starting as a virgin patient today; I would choose the sleeve or the mini gastric bypass (which I'm revising too). We didn't know enough about the band in 2007 when I had mine but we now know there are cases of it fusing to the liver or embedding in the stomach wall and the chances are if you go with the band you WILL at some point have a revision. We really don't have all that long term study on the sleeve and while I don't worry and complications, I do think it will be at risk for regain. Do your research, make your own decision but i at least wanted to share my story

    Unsure of what to do...

Thank you so much for your input, everyone! So...after consulting with the surgeons, I've decided to go with the sleeve initially. Perhaps the weight loss alone will improve the acid reflux. My Barrett's will be closely monitored with regular scopes. IF - worst case scenario, i do experience worsening acid, I can be converted to the RNY. I'm comfortable with the sleeve for now...and having it revised in the future might even be an added bonus if I end up one of those people who have severe hunger return after a year or two. So - I pack my bags tonight and have my surgery in the morning!!! :-D

  21. Yes it is possible to resleeve. Regardless of what others will tell you it is possible to restretch you stomach, some people are more likely than others for a lot of reasons. My "sleeve" is very large, my surgeon used a 42 Bougie and had to start with a larger sleeve because of scar tissue. It easily stretched out in just a years time. I have X-rays to prove the size and for me, it wasn't about cutting carbs or increasing exercise. I needed a tool that worked for me as long as I work for it and I don't have that. Be sure though that it is the sleeve that is "broken" and not you before restoring to another surgery. I obsessively researched resleeving for months as well as pouch resets and back to basics before deciding to revise to MGB. I'm scheduled for 4/23. Best of luck for whatever you decide.

    What would you do ?

Thanks guys ! I'm scheduled to revise to MGB on 4/23.
  23. I am also maybe doing a revision with my band. I have gone back and am researching all the surgeries available. I am really liking the ds. my gi doctor who doesn't have anything invested in my wls said that the ds was a very good surgery very successful wt. loss and maintaining the wt. loss with little or no complications. you don't get the dumping with ds. and no reflux as some experience with the sleeve. I have a appointment with my wls early part of may. good luck on your revision. it is a nerve racking decision.
  24. Having had a lap band for 9 years, and it failing quite spectacularly! I have just been approved for revisional surgery. I have been given the option of Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass.... and I am struggling to decide which will be best for me. I understand both have their pro's and con's... Im aware of all the post surgery risks, but Im more concerned / would like to hear from people who have had sleeve / bypass for a number of years... at least 5 years ideally..... I would really appreciate any feedback on the following points that are worrying me: Bypass - Very little / No revisional options... has anyone had anything go wrong after a number of years? Dumping... How often does this actually effect people? Ive heard you get very 'noisy' digestion.. and a lot of wind!! Is this the same for everyone who has had bypass? Sleeve - Given this is relatively 'new' Im very interested in long term satisfaction / issues, if any? Ive heard after a few years the stomach can stretch and revision is likely to maintain restriction? Ive heard people revising from lapband to sleeve, often feel no restriction? it this common? Ive also heard the chances of getting heartburn are high with a sleeve? Are there many people who never had heartburn before surgery, who were effected post surgery? I am naturally a bit nervous having to have surgery again, and would appreciate your feedback. Look forward to any help from anyone. Thanks!

    Just approved

Hello all can I ask how the revision process went for you all? Did you have to start the process over. I am tired of dealing with being stuck, vomiting, heart burn and off and on port pain. I have a consult with the PA on Tuesday. I can't remember if my last appointment with her was a defill or a fill. My first thought was to just get thing thing out then I researched and hope to be approved for a VSG revision.
