    Band Question

I worried about flying too and when I flew I had no problems. It actually kept the hunger away longer. I lost weight while traveling.

    Getting Sleeved This Tuesday

It went great with the Insurance co! Once my doctor's office finally submitted the info (by phone actually!) they gave the authorization right off the bat. I am 5 1/2 months out and am down 53lbs. The weight loss is slower than some, but I am VERY happy with my progress. Good luck!

    Protein Question

I just added up the grams of Protein I'm getting on the liquid diet that I've been put on, 44 grams a day. It's not enough but I'm afraid to add anymore protein because I need to lose weight or the surgery is going to be postponed. Any suggestions?

6 months and only 40 lbsdown

weight loss varies greatly. I am 6 months out and have lost 63 pounds. I get frustrated when I see that someone has lost 100 pounds by their 6 month date. Sorry I don't have any advice for you. We just have to keep on keeping on and we will get there! good luck to you!!
  8. As long as people feel comfortable with the procedure, i would say it doesn't matter if its the RNY or Band. Maybe in the future there will be another procedure even safer and better then lapbanding. Will we lapbanders look at it with the same suspicion as RNY people look at us??? As long as we loose weight and regain our life back I would say, Go Go Go! ( I don't think i am making any sense here )
  9. My honest opinion is that the RNY is a poor choice all around: You have more food restrictions than with the lap-band (due to "dumping"), but yet you can't be sure the weight is really gone for good. Yes, that's right - people CAN regain all the weight a few years after an RNY...if they even reached goal weight in the first place. The lap-band is clearly the safest choice, and many people have been successful with it. The band has an excellent track record in Europe and Australia, where it has been used for years. A lot of people don't look at the long term results...they see the way that bandsters start off slow and assume (wrongly) that it must be a failure if the weight doesn't melt off right away. But even if you're just in a hurry to lose the weight, at any cost, I STILL don't think the RNY is the best choice. If you're just in a hurry to be thin, I suggest researching the Duodenal Switch, NOT the RNY. The DS is a pretty major, risky surgery - like the RNY - but at least it has better long-term weight loss statistics than the RNY. The DS people can eat more foods than the RNY patients (no dumping syndrome) so they also tend to be happier with their post-op diet than the RNY people. See http://www.duodenalswitch.com for details. For those reasons, I feel that the RNY and VBG are both out-dated choices. The RNY has been replaced by the DS and the VBG has been replaced by the lap-band. Of course, if the RNY and VBG are the only options available to someone, I wish them the best, because those surgeries obviously CAN work...but they really aren't the best choices, in my opinion. I feel the only reason that the RNY is so popular is just because it's faster and more profitable for the doctors to do RNYs than to spend the time and effort necessary to perform duodenal switches or lap-band adjustments.
  10. I always find it interesting when they tout how unsuccessful the Lapband is yet they ignore the statistic that at 5 years the average weight loss with the RNY is 50% of excess weight loss. Yep, 50%. There are plenty of RNYers who are thrilled with the band as a choice but for their own reasons decided against is. Not a biggie. But there are others out there who are poorly educated and refuse to acnknowledge that they have no real information about banding, only hearsay and conjecture. It's a very american attitude to sway towards the solution offering instant gratification. Myself, I prefer to look 5, 10, 15 years down the road at where I could end up with either surgery. I personally chose the less invasive route that was not going to compromise my absorption over the long term and that is ADJUSTABLE. The majority of RNYers screaming that loudly are either preop, newly postop or under 2 years postop (really--take a good look at who is spewing this stuff). The FACTS are you can gain ALL YOUR WEIGHT back with ANY bariatric surgery if you're motivated enough. There are groups on yahoogroups with several thousand people who are struggling with this post-RNY issue. Groups like OSSG-hungry come to mind. With all of the surgeries permanent behavioral changes are neccessary to sustain success. There is no magical solution. And honestly? I think for some people it makes them angry to have struggled so hard to come to terms with the RNY--the risks, the extremeness of it, and then to learn about banding. It's a much safer mental place to be in to convince yourself it "doesn't work". Therefore you don't have to acknowledge that you could have made a different decision. Insurances are coming around to covering banding, but for goodness sakes it was only just approved by the FDA two years ago! It's a relatively new procedure and it takes time to convince insurance companies to cover it. How quickly people forget that roughly five years ago it was almost impossible to ge them to cover bypasses. Use your common sense and do your own research. And most importantly--when you read an OPINION take into the consideration where the poster is in their journey and that they may have personal biases. Oh--and by the way I was very successful with the band .

I too was wondering about this. I have several tattoos and quite a bit of weight to lose. Hoping they don't look like crap afterwards!

It's totally normal. Your body is reacting to fast weight loss. Biotin really does work.

    Passing out

I do have problems with this. In June I passed out after standing up too fast. It was 2 weeks after cervical fusion and because of that I ended up in the emergency room. I was referred to a cardiologist and an endocrinologist and had a full work up. For me, my blood pressure runs low as does my heart rate. If I stand up too fast the room turns black and I pass out. My heart is perfectly healthy, I just run with a low heart rate and pressure. This is common following massive weight loss. I had to learn to be careful when standing or sitting from a laying position. I hope you feel better soon.
  14. ((hugs)) Sorry about your miscarriage and happy about your 2 children. If it were me, I would do 2 things now. 1. Go see my WLsurgeon and get them to send me to a nutritionist and a therapist in that order. Start the 6 month documentation with the therapist now. Get to finally working on the eating behaviors that are keeping me heavy and down. Get all of my blood work done to r/o thyroid, endocrine issues and/or underlying medical conditions. 2. Start working on getting an approval for revision to DS and find a surgeon in my network that can do that revision surgery--not all surgeons will or can do revisions to DS or RNY. Honestly, at this present weight and with the problems you had losing to goal with the VSG and if it was me, I'd go nuclear on my weight. DS is THEEEEEEEE most effective wl tool from a malabsorption standpoint--especially given what I think may also be the emotional/psychological eating issues associated with the regain and present weight. BTW, no judgement here. We all deal with emotional/behavioral issues with food relationships that simply MUST be fixed if we want to have any hope of losing and keeping the weight off long term.
  15. I never hit my goal weight either, and I've regained since then. Not sure how much: I'm afraid to look at the scale. I hope it's only 15, but I think it might be closer to 25 or 30. I've gotten addicted to processed carbs again, so I need to go off them, but it's tough. I was near perfect on my diet for a year, but never did any exercise. I think that really prevented me from reaching my goal. I'm feeting very motivated to exercise now; in fact, I'm going tomorrow to get a gym membership. (I do much better at exercise with a gym membership than working out at home.) I'd like to do keto because it's so effective, but since the surgery, my body really does not like it when I eat much fat. Also, there aren't a lot of protein sources I like, so I'm thinking about looking into a more plant based diet. I like the idea of fruits, vegetables, beans, string cheese, Greek yogurt, eggs, and some meat here and there. I should go back to protein shakes, but I drank so many for so long that I'm really tired of them. I think I'll start the Pound of Cure diet and see where it takes me. Anyway, good luck to you! It's tough when it seems that everyone else has been so successful, but tomorrow is another chance at success.

    Muscle issues?

Great job looking into getting the ball rolling! Being obese can cause orthopedic issues as it affects posture, joints, etc... Due to many years of obesity, I have severe ankylosing spondylosis in my entire spine and bilateral posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD). These conditions cause varying levels of pain, my cervical spine being the worst & constant pain. The PTTD requires me to wear braces to prevent pain & allow me to do things I couldn't do without braces. As I lost weight, increased my exercise & worked with a physical therapist, I was able to use less supportive braces. I began with custom AFO's (knee height), then SMO's (just over the ankle bone), until now, just UCBL's (a custom orthotic that comes up a smidge higher on my foot than a regular orthotic. I mention this because, you don't want to do any damage. Please see an orthopedic doctor for a full evaluation.
  18. Hi there. I'm new. I've been researching, considering WLS for the past couple of months. I learned my insurance won't cover, so Mexica may be an option if I move forward. As I complete my health history for one clinic, I am wondering who is going to do surgery on a 60-year-old in poor health? Yet, I understand so many candidates receive surgery because of their health. - I've been hypothyroid for 20 years, which has progressed now to autoimmune thyroid. - I've had several surgeries over the years. Mainly: two cesareans, hysterectomy, hernia repair, gallbladder removal, pacemaker. I also have asthma, and neuropathy in feet due to degenerative disc disease. I've been referred to Mayo Clinic for what my doctor believes are autoimmune-related issues. Has anyone here been denied surgery due to health/age? I am considering WLS to help with health issues after I visit Mayo Clinic. I was told by one reputable clinic in Mexico I would not be a candidate for the sleeve; I'd need a gastric bypass if accepted. Getting this weight off (goal of about 85 lbs.) would help with arthritis and autoimmune, etc. Anyone have similar experience? I look at my application and realize I may just be beyond the scope of consideration. I'd appreciate some feedback. Thank you! I wish you all well in your journey!

    18 weeks post op

You look so much younger love how weight loss can do that to us ! congrats
  20. The sleeve by itself should cause you to loose 50% of excess weight. Assuming the 155 is ideal then the total from 289 is 134 so the sleeve, in the course of a year, should get you down to 222. The rest, other 50% is normal diet and exercise. You will get there. I agree slower is better, to much to fast causes weakness and tears away at Protein and muscle. Mix things up, have a day of no worry splurge then go on a no/low fat low calorie eating string. This helps keep metabolism going and avoiding "starvation mode" stalls. Add some exercise, or different, exercises into mix. If you normally just walk or run, then add in resistance training. If you do resistance change up the types of exercises. This will not only help with metabolism memory but muscle memory problems.
  21. Would you do anything differently if you just decided you will be 210 forever and you will not lose anymore weight? Would you eat more or differently or exercise less or something? I just figure I will eat the same after I reach goal as I do now. I may drop down a little bit more or not... but not quickly in any event. I'm not really on a special diet except for more Protein than before. I guess I could develop increased stomach capacity or hunger... I don't know about that yet. Hope not. Some studies say there is a weight bounce at 3 years. I am trying to stay on track and not just go on some crazy cake eating expedition or something for a month...(Really, I don't even think I could do that now...) I don't feel like I have to hold myself back much at all. Just trying to make healthy and conscious decisions as often as possible.
  22. Get out of the house! You need to be away from the sight and smells of food. Find something to do that will keep your mind off being hungry. Focus on weight loss. You are where you are for a reason. Think about where you want to be and how to get there. Grab a magazine filled with skinny people and think about how they stay that way. Umm, that's all I got right now. Talk to me if you need to!! Do anything but eat that food. It will hurt you in more ways then one.

    Thursday 6/25

This is my first blog but I feel like I really need to do something to change my attitude. I have been on a roller coaster with my weightloss since January. This happens to me everytime I lose weight. I do extremely well for about 3 months and then it all goes to pot. I go for another fill next week as I have not really had any restriction feeling as of yet. I hope the MD will fill me a bit more than he has in the past.
  24. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! I was banded in MX 1/8/08. I am only down 10# I am sooo disappointed. I have has 3-4 fills. I am very sensitive to fills and have even had to be unfilled once because it was too much! I do not have a dr. here in IN where I live per say. There is only one dr. in my area that will do fills in pts. that were banded in MX so I have few choices. I was a surrogate just to get the money to pay for this surgery. I pay cash for all my fills, they are $300 a pop! I do not have it like that. I am a single mom, full time nursing student. The only insurance I have is Medicaid. There is no reason I should not be losing weight. I eat so much less than I used to. I have exercised, not exercised still no budge. I do not know what to do. At this point I want it taken out. The dr. in MX is not much help, nor is the one here. If I am going to be fat at least I should be able to eat the Big Macs and stuff at least then I'd know why I was still fat! My band is 10cc and I think I have 4-5cc in it. That doesn't sound like much but as I said I am very sensitve to fills. I throw up at least every other day if not everyday because food gets stuck. And I have had this fill for at least a month or more. What should I do? Any professionals that could help? I am so frustrated and disgusted with myself. My friend was banded there a few mos. before me and have never had a fill and lost 40+. I am so embarrassed to even tell people I had it because I have not lost. My boyfriend who sees what I eat wonders why I cannot lose as well. I am crying as I write and do not care who knows at this point!:frown::lol::confused:
  25. There also isn't enough Protein in this sample diet that you wrote here. You need at least 60-65 gm per day no matter what. Your body thinks it is starving and is holding onto the weight. Are you still drinking you Protein shakes. I am going on 2 months post op and still have 2 a day. My dietician says that I need them and I have lost 32 lbs in 71/2 weeks. I would beef up on the protein so you body doesn't think it is starving Good Luck
