  1. The dumping keeps me honest, but I have found that some things don't cause me to dump. It's not a good feeling when you're all sweaty, your stomach hurts and you have gas that you can't trust 100%. I find though, that eating anything super greasy is way worse. i try to avoid anything greasy and anything with a lot of sugar in it (super vanilla-y things really hurt my stomach). It's really not as bad as people think, but you have to absolutely stop when you're full because any sort of over-full feeling is so horrible feeling. I truly avoid that with all my might. even if I have 2 bites left on my plate, it stays there because i'd rather waste that bit of food than hate myself for the next hour and feel sick. Honestly, I chose the bypass over the sleeve because of the heartburn and the potential to gain weight back easier (from my understanding/observation) but def talk with your doctor about this. I'm sure you'll figure out what's best for you.
  2. There's a WLS YouTuber (My Level 10 Life) who swears by Better Help (she's actually paid to promote them, but she swears that she gets asked to promote a lot of things and only promotes things she really believes in), but I'm skeptical of it and I'm almost certain my insurance wouldn't cover any of that. I can try asking my surgery center for a recommendation. I didn't ask them because I wanted to get someone in-network for my insurance, but at this point, I think I'd rather pay out of pocket for something that actually helps. I have a high deductible that I haven't met yet, so I'm paying out of pocket right now, anyway. Maybe I could ask the therapist who did my pre-surgery eval for a recommendation. I've actually thought about going to him because I liked him and I could tell he knows a lot about WLS, but it seems weird (and maybe a conflict of interest) to see the person who did my eval. I agree about not liking homework! That's another thing that annoyed me about the first one -- he was big on homework, and it was all really generic, nothing that he came up with specifically to help me. I had told him that my biggest struggle was that I felt like my surgery and weight loss is taking over my life and I have no time or energy left for anything else, and then he comes up with some busy work for me to do.

    Strength after sleeve?

I’m almost 4 months post op. I did weight lifting and cardio at home prior to surgery. A month ago I decided to join a CrossFit gym. I’m the month that I’ve been doing CrossFit, I’ve become noticeably faster (took over 2 minutes off my fastest mile time) and have been able to physically see some muscle definition. I’ve also been able to lift heavier than I did before surgery. Overall, I’d say it did take me some time to get back into the swing of things but I’ve definitely had some positive changes with my strength, endurance, and mental health.
  4. Thank you so much for your helpful reply! I also had a psych eval for surgery approval and I actually really liked the therapist. I could tell he knew a lot about weight loss surgery. I think he said that he offers post-surgery counseling, but it seems like it would be awkward and maybe a conflict of interest. But I've been thinking about going to him if I give up on the current one. I realize that there will be a lot of talking about feelings and stuff with any therapist, but what's frustrating to me is that neither of these therapists seems to make any effort to relate any of my feelings to food/eating, even though I explicitly said these are the issues I want to address. But maybe if I can articulate this better to the therapist, she will understand what I'm looking for.

    Just So Proud

Thank you 🥰🥰 it’s not even just about the weight loss either - I didn’t do this because I hated my body or because I was unhappy with how I look. It’s just amazing how much better I feel, how strong I feel, how much better I sleep and am able to live my life! It’s an absolute game changer!

    Strength after sleeve?

Just had my my one month check up yesterday, which I was actually at 7 weeks out from surgery, and they told me I could not lift weights, or even use the bands, until after 3 months. They said in the beginning they just want me to concentrate on cardio then I can worry about toning and strengthening after 3 months. Now that was just my plan/surgeon. I know others here who were able to lift a month out. It all depends on your doc so definitely ask those questions. And of course they will tell you a guideline they like to follow but it will ultimately come down to how you feel afterwards. If all goes well then yeah, it goes according to plan. But if you end up being someone who runs into issues then it could be longer and not according to plan, ya know? I started going to the gym regularly about a month and a half before my surgery. And was surprised at what I could do right out the gate after not having been at the gym in years. I would like to get back to it when I can. Despite the weight I lost since surgery, I do not feel as thought I lost much muscle/strength. If given the green light, I feel like I could jump right back into the gym and be lifting the same weight/reps/sets that I was before. It may even be easier since I've dropped almost 35lbs since then. Of course my situation doesn't even compare to yours as I was not competitive nor was I in the shape that you were physically. LOL Either way, discuss this all with your surgeon. At least then you'll get an idea at what to expect. On a side note, strongman competitions on TV used to be one of my most favorite things to watch on TV years ago. It used to come on regularly every week. I haven't seen it on air in over 10 years. Wish it would come back on again. Best of luck to you.
  8. Hello all I am 16 days post op from gastric sleeve. I lost 10 pounds quickly the first 5 days after surgery and have been at the same weight for 11 days now. 😥 I have been following my program: meeting water goals, starting supplements when I was supposed to and following the food plan. I know that stalls are to be expected, but darn it if it isn’t frustrating! When will it end? I am putting it out into the universe that I want to bust through this wall! How long did your stall last and was it right after surgery for you as well? On the positive side: I am already off of 3 of my 4 blood pressure meds, feel good, and have been sleeping great. I’m trying to focus on these great healthy wins and not the numbers on the scale. Thanks to all for the support an insights offered on this site. I appreciate it greatly!
  9. Hi, I've been stalking (in a nice way) you all for tidbits and insights in what to expect and a time-line of events. This is my 3rd attempt to get weight loss surgery throughout my adult life. The first 2 attempts got my hopes up and then boom, insurance denied. So I work for walmart and saw something about thier Center of Excellence and weight loss coverage and thought I'd give it another shot. So because of covid I wouldn't have to go from Cincinnati to Cleveland to have this done, which is the closest center to me. I have an exemption they call it. So they found me a dr in cincy. I have an appointment 7-16. Communication between myself and insurance is basically a new experience for me. I don't typically see drs. Or had anything major happen to me in years. I have a letter that says I have a prior authorization but they have to agree on the cost. Anyone gone through this? I want to believe it's finally going to happen yet still apprehensive.
  10. Hello all, I just need a spot to share my happiness since I don’t talk a lot about wls with many of people (it’s not a secret, I just haven’t made it a central point of my personality!) I’m about 3 months (3 months 1 week) post op for sleeve, about to go in for my 3 month checkup, and I’ve officially lost 60 pounds, which is also half way to my goal 🥰 It was tough getting started in the beginning, and I struggled to know how to eat had how much to eat properly. I’ve even had some setbacks gaining a pound or 2 here or there. But I set this goal for myself and I met it - I’m so happy. I am forever grateful for this journey, this opportunity, and this community along the way! Good luck to everyone and enjoy your day!
  11. Just to be a downer on this yucky, cold, rainy day, I’ve got a weird non-scale FAIL: We thought we would go and do some do-gooding yesterday and donate some blood, but was informed that I do not meet the minimum weight requirement for my height to donate…and was unceremoniously turned away ☹️ I didn’t know that was even a thing.

    Hair Loss & Highlights??

I've continued to have my hair highlights since my surgery and weight loss. I've lost a lot of hair in the past few months. My stylist actually said that the highlights coat the hair shaft and makes my hair thicker so it doesn't look so thin. Definitely didn't cause any additional hair loss.

    Having a tough time

You've lost so much weight!!! That's something to be super proud of, definitely take a minute to pat yourself on the back and celebrate your accomplishment. I'm sorry you're going through this. 115 is a really low goal. Most bariatric patients don't get to such a low BMI. Maybe work on losing the 30 lbs you need to for skin surgery and set your final goal a little higher so you don't feel so disheartened? As for losing more weight right now, don't do anything drastic; just focus on the basics, like eating good food; veggies and lean protein. Try using an app like MyFitnessPal or Baritastic to track your calories. Don't beat yourself up for gaining weight during the pandemic - it happened to a LOT of people!! Wishing you the best!
  14. I had my WLS/Rou-y on May 15, 2018, and I now have excess skin near my stomach, thighs, hips, and arms. I'm supposed to be losing more weight toward my surgery to get rid of the excess skin on my stomach because I keep getting rashes, infections, and fungus in the area to the point I have open sores so Medicaid is deeming it medically necessary and deciding to cover it. I'm having a hard time because I hit a weight plateau during the pandemic and gained 13 pounds (I was supposed to lose at least 30) and I'm nowhere near my goal. I don't know what to do with myself and I'm highly disappointed. I do need someone to vent to right now.

    lipo lift

I've heard about it but I'll let you know if I go ahead with getting it or not. They told me I still have to lose more weight just to get any kind of surgery to remove or tighten up my excess skin. They told me I need to be at least 180 for them to do anything for me so I've been working on it.
  16. I had my WLS on May 15, 2018, and I am struggling with my emotions and sadness. My great uncle died and my grandmother is going to need open-heart surgery again. She is not in the greatest health and she's always my main support. I don't know what I'd do if she died. I don't want the same thing that happened to my great uncle to happen to her. Because he died of heart complications recently and it's made me scared of my grandmother getting open-heart surgery for the 3rd time. I need someone I can contact and meet up with who lives in Northern California preferably in Sacramento that has had Gastric Bypass and has kept the weight off for a long time/is successful. I feel like I have nobody to lean on. I recently gained 13 pounds due to all the stress of all this. I REALLY want to get back on track but I've been so distraught I don't know what to do with myself!

    June Surgeries

Today marked my one month sleeve-versary! I’ve lost from 1-3 inches throughout my body. The scale has been stuck for a while for me. My nutritionist told me I’m not getting in enough protein so it’ll be hard to support fat loss. I like focusing on fat loss instead of weight loss. My greatest struggle is getting enough fiber to support healthy bowels. I get bloated sometimes. Still navigating through learning my hunger and full cues. My scars are almost invisible! I’m so impressed with the overall surgery. I’m looking forward to more consistent results. Hope you all are doing well!
  18. I was on Depo about 20 years before I had surgery, and I gained weight like crazy on that! I finally got off it a few months later since I was scared my weight would keep going up. It may be different after you have surgery, though. I was post-menopausal when I had my bypass, so of course no need for birth control. Hopefully someone will be able to answer this for you...

    Walking shoes recommendations

I agree with catwoman7 and Arimi, Brooks and Saucony make excellent walking shoes but everyone's needs are a little different. If you can find a running/ walking shoe store that offers free fittings, I'd recommend it. I had a shoe fitting years ago and they were able to identify my gait, pronation, and high arch. Wherever you go, I'd make sure they offer a good return policy. Also, your feet may shrink as you lose weight and your once great shoes may not offer the right support anymore. Good luck!

    Lost my bum

My butt has always been big, even at my smallest weight. I've lost 162 so far and it is still big, but at the bottom where it meets my legs it is loose and saggy. Sometimes when sit on the toilet it feels like I'm sitting on wadded up toilet paper or something, but it's the skin bunching up! I am also having tailbone pain when I sit too long.. I still hope to lose at least another 40 pounds, so I imagine it will only get worse. [emoji2368] Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I chose the Loop DS because my BMI was so high (69.9), and my surgeon said it was the most powerful operation. I was paying out of packet, so I knew this was my only shot and I wanted to give myself the best chance to lose as much weight as possible. I'm very happy I chose this surgery! LGBTQIA?

Weight loss is weight loss, of course, but there are things that LGBTQ+ people may have to deal with that don't really have parallels in the straight community. As an example: The bear movement among gay men was started in direct response to body-shaming of fat gay men by lean gay men. It was truly awful—gay bars, which were the only safe spaces, started putting what were called "cow catchers" out front—poles set narrowly together, so that only people with lean body types could pass through without turning their bodies or hitching. If you couldn't pass through without turning or hitching, you couldn't go in. So the fat hairy gay men created their own safe spaces (440 Castro in SF and Rockbar in NYC are examples) and their own community. But flash forward thirty years or so and now the bear community has its own judgmental labels and body shaming. Oh, he's not fat enough to be a bear. Oh, he's not hairy enough to be a bear, he's just a chub. Oh, he thinks he's a cub but he's just a skinny old otter. Someone who is gay and identifies as a bear (hi!) who then loses the weight may lose his community, which makes compliance just that much harder. Or he could lose his relationship, because maybe his partner is only into big bears. I'm fortunate in that I don't think I'll have that problem, but it's an example of a situation that only gay men face. There could be situations particular to lesbian women, to trans people (who face issues getting quality medical care even when not obese), for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community. Does it warrant its own forum? I don't know. Maybe, because if you're a member of the LGBTQ+ community and you're searching for answers to your problems, finding a "safe space", or at least a collection of LGBTQ+ WLS issues all in one place, could be a really good thing. I just don't know how much traffic it would see.
  23. I'm considering having my tubes tied followed by weight loss surgery, performed laparoscopically, back to back, on the same day. I was planning on having RNY until the physicians assistant told me my surgeon may not agree to tubal ligation followed by RNY. I may have to switch to tubal ligation followed by a gastric sleeve. A couple of weeks ago I was scheduled for the Nexplanon birth control implant. I realized at my age, (early 40s) I'm ready for something permanent. I'd tried to get my tubes tied in my mid and late 20s but was turned down by two OB/GYNs. In over a month I have a consult with a great OB/GYN and later with my surgeon. I'm sure I'll get some clarity after those visits but I'd like a perspective from someone who's had this specific surgery or another combo like WLS+ gallbladder removal. How long were you out of work or when did you start to feel like yourself again? Did you have any side effects related to the tubal part of the surgery? Anything you wished you'd known before surgery?
  24. Jayali, I can think of three reasons why you are feeling so depressed and tired: post partum depression, carrying for an infant while holding down a job, and lack of vitamins and minerals. You need to get with the program. Take your supplements religiously and eat according to your food plan. I recommend that seek treatment for your addictions: medication and food. This may mean joining a 12-step program such as Overeaters Anonymous, AA, or NA. Avoid all sugar, artificial sweeteners, and flour. These are the things that trigger most of us. Otherwise, you will defeat your surgery and regain all that you've lost. If you've been prescribed a CPAP machine, find a mask that suits you, and use the CPAP every night. Getting enough sleep can make all the difference in the world. There are non-addictive sleeping pills that are very effective, such as Lunesta. I recommend reading Weight Loss Surgery Does Not Cure Food Addiction by Connie Stapleton and How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works, by Matthew Weiner. Please return to your obstetrician and bariatric surgeon and get help.

    PPI

I took proton pump meds for 20 years before surgery. When I told my voice doc I wanted to get off them, he asked whether I'd ever considered weight loss surgery. Up until then I hadn't, so that was the start of my journey. It's good to get off the proton pump meds because they can cause bone density problems. Since my surgery a little over a month ago, the surgeon has me on omeprazole 40 mg. I think he wants me to take them for six months. The idea is to protect the vulnerable spots while they are healing.
