I'm wondering if anyone would share their experience regarding the follow-up appointment they had one month after surgery. I am getting anxious because I lost a significant amount of weight in the week leading up to the surgery and the two weeks after as I was taking in mostly liquids and very few calories those weeks. I have definitely kept portions much smaller for the most part, but I still find myself hungry (I call it "real meal" hungry) at least once a day. For example, I can eat an egg or a protein shake for breakfast and a can of tuna for lunch, but by dinner I'm having a harder time controlling portions. With this pattern I've put on most of the initial weight I lost while I was on liquids. I'm only down a net of 2 pounds. My doctor doesn't put anything in the band until 2 months out from surgery. I know weightloss is supposed to be slow and steady, but I'm kinda worried that they will be condescending about such a small number. I'm also concerned about having another month where I'm not supposed to eat more than 1/2 a cup of food 3 times a day with no snacking when the band hasn't been restricted at all yet. At any rate, I'd love to hear from anyone willing to share their experience.

My surgeon's PA told me over a year ago that I would have to quit smoking to get the band. I quit Oct. 1, 2009 but I use an electronic cigarette. After a week of this Optifast diet I would kill for a regular cigarette and a scrambled egg! It must be about oral fixations for me!!!

Hi. I'm new to this forum but would love someone that I could communicate with regularly. I was banded 11/24/09 in South Carolina. I'm 35, married, no kids....lots of pets! I'm a veterinarian with a weight loss goal of 100 pounds. Having some trouble being excited about this liquid phase! Ready to get on with it! Will someone mentor me? Thanks! sara -

Hi everybody, I am a first time poster, but I've been lurking on these forums for weeks and I can't express how helpful I have found everyone to be. My name is Julie, and I am 29 years old. I have been thinking about weight loss surgery for a number of years, and recently made the decision to get sleeved. I started my pre op diet in October, and have been working with my surgeon's nutritionist monthly. I just received dates for all of my testing, so for the first time, this is all starting to feel real. I have my second appointment with the surgeon next week, and will finish all of the testing the second week of February. I'm guessing I'm on track for a late March surgery date. I can't wait! I'd love to hear from people who are at the same stage as me or who have/had similar stats. My husband is incredibly supportive of my decision to so this, but I don't have anyone else in my 'real life' who even remotely understands what I'm about to go through. My progress so far... I lost 5 pounds during month 1 of my supervised diet, and 7 in month 2. As is par for the course for me when I diet on my own, the loss has really stalled in month 3. I've been averaging 950-1100 calories per day, 60-80 grams of Protein. I started swapping out one meal per day for a premier Protein shake about 2 weeks ago. I don't get much exercise but try to hit my fitbit steps goal most days of the week. I haven't figured out how to set up a profile yet, so for now, here are my stats. (I'm only 5'2".) HW 230 SW 228 CW 212 GW 130 (This is my goal, not the doc's. I'm anxious to ask him about this at the next appointment.)

I am pretty sure you are not supposed to use anything with an "oily" base on the Dermabond glue they used until the incision is well healed-at least a couple of weeks. I was never told this by my MX surgeon but when my son had a bad cut near his eye they glued it together and I was warned not to use anything like Neosporin as it would soften/dissolve the glue. This might be adding to your "leaky" problem if the glue is trying to dissolve. Hope this helps some. Also, my dermotologist reccomends only Bacitracin ointment. She says Neosporin can be very irritating to sensitive skin Lisa

Thanks for the input! I was wondering if you go to a "Center of Excellence" site that they may require 6 weeks? I am goingto go anyway and tell him that I don't have restriction at all-zero-and I am starting to gain which I totally don't want!

non-parishable foods/snacks during work?
wcdaniels replied to berkeleycurves's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The tuna packs are a great idea. They're so packed with Protein. I have 4 ounces of tuna for lunch almost every day. The Quest bars are also a great idea. I have one every day for Breakfast, but be aware that they don't work for everyone. Some people find they are too dense, and a few people have reported that they spike their blood sugar. Some people find they stall when they have protein bars. i also keep beef Jerky at work, and have an ounce daily for my morning snack. I also keep some almonds, and I'll have a few in the afternoon if I fell I need something. -
anybody else have issues 2 months out?
Kremmell785 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So as I type this I am on day 2 of being in the hospital. I can't consume anything by mouth without vomiting for the past week. I had surgery Nov 25, 2013 and minus a few typical bumps in the road at the very beginning, I have been doing great. Now they have no idea what's wrong. anyone else experience anything similar? -
I have had diarrhea gas and bloating for over a week now Dr. said I could stop the actigal as diarrhea is a side effect, but no change after 5 days Possible causes seem to be... A bug like e coli or salmonella ... but 10 days? I am eating something I cant tolerate .... not sure what I am eating badly ... not chewing enough? But that would come and go Read news article this week that said the sleeve helps produce a positive change in the gut biome... so maybe this is just a phase? Any advice.... besides immodium and hydration

Does anyone feel like they are "starving"?
*susan* replied to 2b4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can honestly say hunger is no longer an issue for me. Since getting my sleeve, I have not once said I am starving. I crave things, but that is head hunger, not real physical hunger. I am pretty good about eating my three regular meals on a relatively consistent schedule, so I think that helps too. 2b4me, you are correct, you are physically unable to eat the quantities of food you did pre-sleeve. Which, is wonderful! -
I just finished Week 1 with one more week to go before surgery. I have heard that after surgery you won't even want food for a few days.....so.....I just keep thinking about that every time I think I am going to lose my mind. lol

Does anyone feel like they are "starving"?
Timetofly replied to 2b4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am going to be sleeved on Feb 8th and the worry that keeps going through my head is will I be able to eat enough to work out and not feel crappy or weak. I am an advid exerciser (have been for years despite my weight) and I will definately have a difficult time if I can't eat OR exercise. Has anyone had a problem with this? I know for the first few weeks before I can get enought protein it might be a problem but I am talking about long term... -
Increased Restriction After Abdominoplasty
BayougirlMrsS replied to mary murphy-dematteo's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Hey.... i wish my PS had left at least some of my fill in. He removed it all. He said that he had a bad experience with a patient that refused to let him remove the fill..... she couldn't eat are drink and got dehydrated and had to be put in the hospital. Said that the extra swelling caused the band to be tight. I'm having conflicts about filling it again. I really want to, but kind of enjoying the ability to eat "normal" again. Not over-eating by any means.... but i did eat a piece of toast this weekend.....OMG... was it good. I have gained 3lbs..in the 6 weeks i have had no fill... but i don't think that's too bad. -
Has anyone had a port incision drain for a long time? I am baout 3 months out and it is still draining.
ElfiePoo replied to Rchavez101's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That doesn't sound right. I'd get yourself to the doctor pronto. I had a c-section with my youngest son and was much heavier than I am now and it cut right through the fattest part of the abdomen. They put a drain in because they wanted to make sure it healed from the inside out but that drain was still gone and I was healed within 2 *weeks*. . -
RNY: can you FIT water IN? And HOW?
Bingcherry replied to meyouus's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was just converted from band to RNY this past Tuesday. I'm definitely having a lot of trouble getting all my Fluid in. I just cannot sit here and drink all day long. I've probably been doing 45-50 oz per day. I am still only on Clear liquids so I count everything, even the sf popsicles. I can tell if I'm drinking too quickly, I start belching so I stop for a little bit and then continue on. I"m so glad that I have the next 6 weeks off of work so I can master the fluid intake. -
Had revision surgery almost two weeks ago and I am completely amazed at how easy it has been. Have walked quite a bit, came back to my business one week after and am so thankful everything has gone so well. I have had some troubles with the Proteins so now am shaking Greek yogurt with every kind of cream Soup I can find and heating it up. I finally decided the Protein chemical taste was making me slightly nauseous since I previously cooked and ate mostly fresh, not processed, foods.

On the Path to VSG...Hopefully Best Decision
Someday160 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am a life long dieter...read a journal I wrote when I was 8 and even then I was talking to myself about losing weight. I've been a pauing member/meeting attender with WW for numerous years and although I love the program, I still struggle with portion control, emotional eating and general grazing. I see a therapist to help with the emotional aspects...and that has helped. I do WW and that has helped...especially with improving overall healthy food selections. But......highest weight of 273 led me to a WLS Seminar in December 2010. I am lucky to live near a Bariatric Center of Excellence. Went for my first consultation a week later. My insurance covers the VSG and I passed the "exceeds a BMI of 40" test with flying colors. Now I am faithfully following the WW program while I navigate the insurance approval. My therapist wrote my psych evaluation and I attended a WLS Support Group Meeting. I plan to continue to attend those as continue towards surgery. I have even purchased all the stuff for the two week preop diet (got to shrink that liver!). I've lost almost 7 pounds since the seminar. I'm looking forward to having the surgery and moving on. I want to decrease the grehlins, enfirce portion control, continue WW, and WLS support group meetings. I'm hoping this site will be a great source for ongoing support and advice as well. Bring on the VSG! -
no weight loss after initial liquid diet
dredre14 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was sleeved on march 4th and lost 11 pounds 1 week post surgery. Since then I have only lost 3lbs. I follow my diet and get as much water as I can. The only thing is that I am NOT getting the 70 80 grams of protein that I should be getting a day. The only protein I'm getting is from my food I am NOT taking any protein drinks because they seem to make me very sick and I'm not sure if this is contributing to the lack of weight loss. Has anyone else had any of these types of problems? -
Personal Trainer...yay Or Nay?
Purdy in Pink replied to topgun's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also have hated to excersize, thought as long as i felt good, looked good, I didnt need to excersize. When i was at my 6 month check up w/ my dr, (after he scolded me for not excersizing) he explained it to me in a way that i finally get it. He said, even tho you look and feel good, when you were "bigger" your fat supported your bones, when you lose that fat, you no longer have anything to support your bones. You HAVE to excersize to keep those bones supported. Plain and simple, and I finally got it! Now i excersize 3 to 5 days a week here at home. I have a "Treadmill" and a "Total Gym System" I've been thinking of seeing a personal trainer to make sure I'm doing it right, but i havent done it quite yet. -
I am doing the 21 Day Fix Program through BeachBody.com. There is a different workout for every day of the week, and they are fantastic! There is even an extreme version once you are ready. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I had no idea why my shoulder hurt. People on this site filled me in on the gas/shoulder issue (thanks). It took a few weeks for it to go away completely for me. I would say it was the worst 3-6 days after surgery. I took pain relievers, gas strips, walked and used a heating pad. It does go away. Believe it or not, it was the worst part for me. Hope this helps.

New here, old there....here's to new beginnings!
Purrplelover replied to slikchik10's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
How was healing with the sleeve compared to the lap band. I am in the same boat and being sleeved soon. This is the one thing that is really making me nervous. I was up and shopping two days post op with the band, and now I fear that I won't be able to do anything for a week after sleeving.
