    Pre-Op Struggling

Hi All New to the forum. I am post op and one day away from starting puree. I am a professional chef and I wanted to just answer your question from my experience thus far. I too was going nuts after day 3 but then I think I figured out why. The main problem with the pre-op and post-op liquid diets is they are antithetical to the way we eat from a taste perspective. We may be getting nutrients and protein and, sure, it's weird to drink all of your food but the biggest unaddressed issue is that most societies don't eat sweet over savory. With a regular diet we may eat a sweet thing for breakfast but mostly it is three savory meals punctuated by little moments of sweet. A dessert, a cookie etc. With this diet all the nutrients comes from things that are way sweet and we might punctuate it with savory. This may be the very thing driving you mad. Now, I will preface this by saying, check with your doctor first. My doctor approved the following. Rather than all sweet shakes I was able to buy unflavored Whey Protein Isolate. I bought a good quality with a high dissolve/absorption ability. I then was able to go to the store and find broth that was better than your Swanson chicken broth. I recommend, if you can find it, Zoup Chicken Broth or Bone Broth (bone broth has more protein which you will want to get as much as you can), Target's brand of Miso, Ramen or Pho starter broth. These are clear, low in calories and packed with flavor. Heat a cup of these to about 140ºF or lower. Any hotter and it does weird things to the powder. Add one scoop, stir till dissolved and give the cup another 30 sec of heat up in the microwave. You get everything you get in the shakes, clear liquid broth and tons of allowable flavor. My second recommendation is to look into a company called Unjury. They make a protein powder chicken soup that tastes like Mrs. Grass. They also do a Southwest Chilli flavor but I am actually regretting having bought that since it is just OK. Anyway, talk to your doctor and try it. I found that getting back to mostly savory punctuated by sweet was my saving grace.

    Water Consumption

    1) you've hit the infamous three week stall. Happens to probably 90% of us. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. It'll eventually break and you'll be on your way again. It usually lasts 1-3 weeks (that "gain" is likely just water weight) 2) yes - fluids go right through you. Some people have a hard time getting them down, but I never did. I didn't drink any differently than I did before surgery. Your stomach will tell you if you're going too fast.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I tried Chicken at 2 weeks plus but dud not go well. Threw it all up felt awful I think it's called dumping It scared the life out of me. But Tried it at just over 3 weeks was fine really enjoyed it. My nutrition lady said don't have anything dry always make sure it's moist it helps it slide down. Xxx

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Yes as body was in shock after surgery so the loss was more but it will level out so I’ve been told and you’ll find the following week you will lose more to make up for it, if you know what I mean.

Did you taste buds change immediately?

I got the first signal mine had "changed" about a week in while I was still on liquids. Anything artificially sweetened (to include protein shakes, Propel, Mio, etc) began tasting like gross, bitter chemicals to me and I couldn't even begin to choke them down. I have been basically drinking plain water, and occasionally some juice and water that has been diluted like 4-1 water/juice just for some fruit flavor, and later, plain white milk, which I HATED before my surgery but that first small glass of skim milk tasted so fresh and nourishing after a week of water.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Is there a 3 week stall? I was wondering 😉
  8. Dear All i have 3 weeks post op. Two Questions for the community: 1- I have started losing a lot of weight in the first two weeks and now have actually gained some even though my food intake is still in the liquid phase. Is this normal, read a lot and its apparently normal. 2- Water consumption, is it normal that fluids flow right through me, i am to gulp a lot of water circa a 500 ml bottle at once and not feel any pain. I just had a 200 ml Protein Shake, 7 oz , of liquid alongside 6 oz(170ml) of light very liquid Soup and about 400ml(13.5 oz)of water and nothing no pain no feeling of vomiting no pain....is that normal?

    May Surgeries - check in!

I’ll be 5 months post Surgery tomorrow. .8 shy of 60lbs lost…which when I first talked to my surgeon I said I’d be happy just losing 60lbs. I am comfortable in my body again, but the weight loss will continue. New goal - get to a “healthy” BMI. I made it thru a 2 week vacation at Walt Disney World …where I didn’t lose, came home up a measly 0.6lbs. Lost 8.2 in the 3 weeks since I got home. So that’s a positive. The trip did not derail my progress.
  11. I haven't had that happen to me in over 20 years. It happened a couple of times back then but since then it's always been delivered to me discretely, rolled up and covered by the attendendant's hand as she/he passes it to me. It's important to tell the attendant at the door upon entering. Sometimes they can hand you one just then. Otherwise it will be delivered to your seat before they come around to make sure all belts are fastened. I've flown Delta, American, United, Southwest, and international flights with no issues over getting an extender discretely. Once on Royal Air Moroc I was bumped into Business Class (from my fully occupied three-across row} because they couldn't find one for me. (Score!)

    Stalling

What they said Stick to the post surgery plan. Make SURE you are getting plenty of water and protein. Water and protein are essential to losing fat rather than lean muscle. During the first two months post surgery, I found it best to weigh just once a week. I still had bloating and the healing process encourages fluid retention. That will cause stalls too. You're doing fine. All the best!

    Stalling

I had my Gastric Bypass surgery on October 6th. I was experiencing the three-week stall myself - just couldn't lose an ounce. Stepped on the scale this a.m. and I am down 2 lbs 4 oz! I knew about the stall and I just kept with the plan. It's now broken and I'm losing weight again! If I can encourage you in any way, I hope you just stick with the plan. Leave the scale alone for a week or two. You will be happy when you see that you've broken the stall! 😀
  15. it's the infamous three week stall. Happens to about 90% of us. If you do a search on this site for the "three week stall" (it's so common it even has a name), you'll find over 17,000 posts on it. And no, I am NOT kidding. just stick to your plan and stay off the scale. And know that it'll eventually break and you'll be on your way again. It typically lasts 1-3 weeks.

  17. When I had surgery I was so large that only my surgeon had a scale on which I could weigh. As a result I could only weigh myself at monthly follow-up appointments. This turned out to be a blessing in several ways: Like most everyone else I'm sure I had stalls but I never saw them; I was forced to trust my plan; I was never tempted to "change it up" because of a number on a scale; Once I got to a weight that allowed me to weigh on a home scale I weighed myself several times that first day. Hey, it was the first time I could do such a thing in 20 years. The novelty wore off in a week or two and I stopped weighing at home. I had learned I could trust my plan. At my monthly follow-up appointments I also realized my surgeon didn't focus on weight. In fact, the only time we talked about my weight was when I brought it up. He was interested in how I was doing on the plan, how I was doing mentally, if there were any concerns. I took his cue and have since focused on the same things over the years. I only weigh in at my annual physicals with my PCP. Bottom line: I didn't know about my stalls, never got depressed behind them, so never had to break either stall or stall depression. I just kept plugging away at my plan. Get off the scale, it is not your friend. Good luck, Tek
  18. Hey Guys I’m just about 3 weeks post op and I think I’m already stalling. Could this even be possible, I was on a nice decent down, I had the gastric sleeve on October 7th. I’m just worried because I’m considered smaller client before surgery… this is a real stall already.
  19. I had the gastric bypass on Oct 12. Ive lost 10lbs since then & havent lost anymore. I feel like I might be doing something wrong? I’ve read so much about people not meeting Protein goals due to feeling full/restriction, which I dont feel. I’m currently able to eat 3-4oz meals & I feel like maybe its too much? Like I shouldnt be able to eat so much, so soon after surgery. I’m eating slowly, taking time between each bite & I wait the 30 mns after my meal to drink Water. However, I don’t feel any restriction and I don’t feel full(I dont feel hungry either, but I eat to reach my protein goals). Should I be able to eat this much so soon out of surgery? Am I eating too much & that’s why I haven't lost any more weight? Is there something I should do differently? *I was cleared to eat eggs, flaky fish, & tuna. & I eat every 3-4hrs, & once I meet my protein goal, I focus on my water & don’t eat more. For reference

    3 Weeks Post Op

Some go back to work after a week, other two weeks or more. I took 4 weeks. We recover differently so it really is up to how you feel. You could try going back part time or with reduced hours if your work allows you. Though is sounds like you may have picked up a bug as you wondered. If you feel worse contact your medical team. Leaks are rare but if you are vomiting &/or have diarrhoea, cold sweats, a fever seek medical help ASAP. Changes to your taste & sometimes your sense of smell is common. A lot of it is reaction to the anaesthetic but it can also be ketosis. It’s temporary but certainly can make drinking or eating challenging: things just taste bleah! I sometimes find water heavy to drink so I add other fluids to my intake as well. All liquids contribute to your goal. I let sparkling water go flat before drinking & drink green tea. I used to also drink a high protein yoghurt smoothie & diluted my protein shakes (doubled the water added). Hope you feel better soon.

The first couple days weren’t fun but by a week after I was feeling great. My birthday was 12 days after my VSG with HH repair and I was laughing, spending time with family, driving and doing all my normal things. I could’ve easily gone back to work 3 weeks post op but took extended time off to have screws removed from my knee 45 days after my VSG so was out of work for a total of about 8 weeks.

    VLCD

My preop diet starts on the 3rd of November for 3 weeks. I have given it lots of thought while I waited. I am allowed veg, milk and yogurt. My go to, will be Thai soups and salads. I have bought in lots of water noodles as they are only 4 cals a packet. I like them better than courgetti. They do fill you up. When I get fed up of those I will have soups - carrot and coriander, mushroom and onion are favourite's . Then there is vegetable curries with cauliflower rice. I have had a lot of time on these pages and will use all the knowledge I have picked up. Onwards and downwards
  24. Hi all, How did everyone feel their 3rd week post op? How soon did people get back to work, part time or full time? I tried going back to work this wee after 2 weeks off. I could barely last half a day and one day was very ill and didn't clock in at all. I don't know if I caught a stomach bug from one of my family members or if I tried something that triggered it. Also, all week my mouth tastes metallic. I thought maybe it was ketosis until I was sick for a day. I had a LOT of acid. I was really surprised at what I had to come up for the low amount of liquid and food I'm getting. My water intake this week has been terrible and I think it's the taste in my mouth just making me uninterested. I'm on Pepcid Complete and started taking a broken up Nexium. I also have 2 tums a few times a day but not a fan because I don't want to cause kidney stones. I had a low fever the day I wasn't able to keep much down. No pain other than where I know stitches are. Wondering if this is common or an issue. Trying to avoid the... "I tried something I shouldn't have" convo with the doctors office. Thank you!
