  1. I went to a seminar and the Dr. said that at one point that he would have said "it will last forever". However, now he hesitates to say this because there have been a couple cases recently from those who were banded over 10 years ago in Australia/Europe that have had to have it replaced. IMO, it is no big deal if you have to have surgery many years down the road. I have to have revision surgery on a port flip bc it came unstitched from my muscle. Things like this just happen, but the good results from the band outweigh potential complications.

Fleur de Lis TT 20th of March

I honestly don't know what the right answer is, but I had a traditional abdominoplasty and lower body lift 1/9/15. I've been struggling since then with a seroma, and it has stretched out my skin, so I have a smaller pannus again, which will require a revision in the future. I think our skin has stretched out so much due to obesity, that it stretches back out again really easily.
  3. Thank you donnie for getting back to me, since I originally started this post, I have come to my senses, spoke with my coordinator who spoke with the surgeon. He says he always states the outside number of months and I should be fine to have my revision anytime in Nov, so I pushed the envelope and am going to be in San Diego the last week of Oct and have decided to have the surgery then, Oct 29th to be exact, as I have chosen a surgeon in TJ. I'm so glad everything worked out for you, I just can't imagine 90% of your band in your stomach. I guess I should be thankful that mine was just to the exterior.

before lapband failure - 180 lbs

    From the album: Random Photos

metabolic lapband failure was happening - fall 2011 I was 180 lbs here and seemed to be forever stuck. Then the weight all creeped back on until I hit 212 lbs the day of my VSG revision
  5. Sorry, I have not been able to get on the forum for some reason. I am doing great. And yes, I was on full liquids after day 2 and it makes it much more tolerable. I don't think you are doing anything wrong, just make sure the consistency of what you have is liquid enough to sip through a straw (without the straw, they are not allowed.) Tomorrow marks two weeks and I believe I have lost 10 pounds. I didn't weigh on my home scale before I went in, so I could be a pound or two off. I don't care, I tried on a pair of pants today that are a half size smaller and they fit. I've been wearing 18 - 1/2W and almost breaking out of them, but the 18 misses now fits (remember I was a revision and had not gained all my weight back from the band.) I kept all my small clothes in anticipation of this surgery. I have not had a problem with nauseau, but certain smells will set me off. I had to tell my coworker her perfume was making me ill. She does apply too heavily, I will have to teach her how to properly apply perfume. Today, I tried to eat a half cup of cottage cheese which I finished in about 30 minutes. I should have taken it a little slower, because I felt like I could toss it. Luckily, we have a jogging path around a lake at work, so I got up and did two laps which helped. I'm glad you are over your nausea, there is nothing worse. Friday is two weeks and I can start pureed foods, also it is my followup day with the doctor. So far, so good. I am very happy in the way my new stomach lets me know when I have had enough. With the band, you get a terrible pain in the middle of your chest, I have not experienced that with the sleeve (although I am not on solids, so we will see.) __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com
  6. My second time was also harder even though I knew what to expect. But before you know it, you will be 6 months post-revision. Hang in there.
  7. My insurance company has an exclusion on gastric surgeries. The state of Utah allows employers to pick and choose what procedures will be covered and not covered. I thought there may be an exception for me since its not a new surgery. The insurance gal at my doc's office doesn't seem to really wanting to dig into this deeper and help me at all. She also is assuming they won't pay for the removal if I want to have it taken out and no revision. I'm still gaining weight and throwing up every day and they are telling me I'm stuck with this band! Does anyone know if this can be appealed?? Help!
  8. Well, this groups isn't very active- but thought I would post that I was finally able to get my sleeve done. It was quite a long journey as I was revised from a VBG by Dr. Sifers 13 yrs ago who has since died in 2005 under a whole spew of lawsuits and medical malpractice suits. Nobody in KC wanted to touch me because they were afraid of what they would find. They wouldn't tell me that to my face, but after enough attempts locally I could take a hint. I had surgery with Dr. Stewart out of Denton, TX and while I think he is a skilled surgeon- his bedside manner could use a HUGE improvement. He also had me staying in a doctor owned surgical facility down there and I was NOT impressed on so many levels. The admin staff were all great but can't say the same for their hospital staff- with the exception of the pre-op nurses and anesthesiologist. The nurses didn't wear gloves most of the time even when drawing blood, would take forever to give me pain med when it was well past the time for me to have it and the list goes on. He operates out of another hospital and although I don't ever expect to be back there for surgery, I would stay at the other hospital he operates out of (Baylor). Half the time when you call his office you get the answering machine during business hours even on days he doesn't have patient visits. You will have a really hard time getting answers to questions on anything regarding your surgery without waiting several days. So, his business practices are a bit to be desired but I'm grateful I haven't had any complications so far. I'm only 11 days out and lost 27# which is great but it is slowing down considerably now which I expected. I go back to work July 11th and my PCP will be doing most if not all of my post-op / follow up care.

    Day of surgery

Hey there Losing4life, Just a note on the shoulder gas pain. I was just told by the nurse after my total revision of band that if you put heat on the shoulder the pain will go away faster. I am thankful that I have not had that gas pain this time around. good luck! This band really does work!

From Lap Band To Gastric Bypass

I'm sorry about your weight re-gain, but most surgeons don't like to do revision surgery at the same time as band removal anyway, because they want the area to heal completely first. I'm sure someone will jump in and ask you why you haven't considered revising to the sleeve (which often isn't covered by health insurance), so I'll skip along and tell you that I personally know of 2 bandsters who revised to gastric bypass. One had some complications from the surgery but is now recovered and doing fine. The other had no complications and is also doing fine and happy about her revision. Both revised due to slow or disappointing weight loss with the band. Interestingly, they're both finding weight loss to be slow even with the bypass, which makes me wonder if something else is going on in their body to "fight" the bariatric procedure.

From Lap Band To Gastric Bypass

Thank you for your reply. I had really bad anxiety right after getting the band, They told me it was from the med Reglan that they gave me. I lost 75 lbs the first year, had my galbladder out and after that I just started gaining the weight back. I have gained almost all of the wight back now and the band seems to be getting more and more uncomfortable. As with mlliemac, I never found the green zone again. I am just starting the process and don't know if there's even a chance for a revision. I have had my band for 6 yrs.

    Need some advise

I had the same path of band, sleeve, then conversion to bypass in March. I didn’t have any trouble with insurance, but I have Medicare and a supplement. I also had three different surgeons. The first two were in Mexico for the band and then Las Vegas for the sleeve so I had no follow up as well. I explained to my surgeon that I didn’t really use the sleeve properly due to stress in my life. I also had GERD which probably helped with the approval. Good luck to you, I hope that you are able to get your revision.
  14. I wanted to see if anyone has had a problem with insurance approving revision surgery. I feel like an absolute failure. I had a band placed in 2010 and had to have it removed because of complications and converted to a sleeve in 2015. For some reason my body just didn’t let me lose the weight as easily as I did with the band. I’ve put back all the weight since then. Im going to see my surgeon on Monday. When I called to make the appointment the lady told me that I may have a hard time with approval since I hadn’t continued to follow up with the office. I went to all my scheduled appointments and was never told I needed to continue checking in. Im just trying to mentally prepare for my appointment. Im afraid they will tell me there is nothing they can do to help me get healthier. I just feel defeated.

Need help with appeal letter to BCBS Michigan

Wellmark - BCBS in Iowa isn't covering yet either, but they are due to revise their policy this month.....I am patiently (not) waiting.....and stalking the website daily!!!!!
  16. It's crazy that they didn't suggest a revision when they removed your lap band. In most of the things I've read and watched, that seems to be the case.

    Pain, upper left abdomen

HI am 13 days post op revision and woke up yesterday morning with a sharp pain under my left breast in my ribs. It hurts more when I take a deep breath. I am going to check with my Dr, in the morning. I am hoping it is just a muscle or something. Good luck.
  21. I am scheduled December 12th to have my lap band removed and revision to RNY. I leave in May for Europe for wine cruise in Bordeaux France and then an additional 3 weeks in Spain and Portugal. I would like to enjoy some wine and tastes of on the various foods we will be served. I will be traveling with 2 other couples. I need help understanding where I will be in 6 months. Can I eat and drink just about anything within the small servings guidelines? Being able to keep up with the other couples and being sick and tired of being so heavy and out of shape is my driving me to do this now. The other issue I have is that my mom is being referred to hospice. She is 95 and not sure if she has days or weeks left. How long will it take me to recover from surgery so I can get back to visiting her. She lives near me. Thanks in advance for any comments.

    Dr. Aceves

I am having him do my revision surgery from band to sleeve. He is a very good doctor. I know somebody who knows him personally and you will be in good hands. In my opinion, he would be the only doc in Mexico that I would recommend. He has a great deal of experience, and the hospital he works out of is wonderful . I know several people who have gone to him and they all loved him, his staff, and the hospital.
  23. D If you could get the band out here it would cost you less to have the sleeve done in TJ. But for $6300. it would be worth just doing it that way. Patti is one of my Dr's coordinators, so you would have my Dr. They just moved into their new hospital this week. I went to a temp hosp last week. I would recomend them highly. I have went to him twice and had great experience both times. So why don't you want to go back to your original surgeon? They will give you a special rate for the revision, at least mine did. Unless you did not like him. Yes I flew into San Diego and then they picked me up at the airport. It is only about a 20 minute drive to Tijuana, that is where I went. I went when airfare was expensive, it cost me $447 but I had no choice the band had to come out now! I just got an airfare alert and it is $139 roundtrip again. That is what I paid in March. I don't think of the sleeve as being radical, I think of it as being practical. It makes you eat the amout you SHOULD be eating! WHich overeating is why all of us here!! I have progressed to mushies and it tells you when you are done, just a hint of pain in the chest are. I love that it monitors it for you. I can eat 4-5 bites right now and that is it! I'm doing great, in fact I'm going back to work tomorrow! Don't know if I will make a whole day or not, time will tell. Good luck with your decision, Bernadette
  24. Hello! I'm officially in the revision family! Everything went well and I arrived home earlier today. Your posts helped so much because from the time I was out of recovery, I walked every hallway that I could every 3 hours. It really helped with the pain and gas. Well, I'm seven pounds heavier than when I went in but...has to be fluid from the IV ' I only drank 30ml at a time! Just following up.
  25. A couple of things - I am a bypass person by the way. You say you don’t want the bypass due to cost (that is reasonable! I was mostly self-fund and it is tough - but worth every cent)), the malabsorption and dumping. Malabsorption and dumping are really a much smaller deal than people seem to imply. Re the malabsorption, I take a 10c vitamin pill every day and a 15c folic acid tablet. That really isn’t a big deal! And the dumping? Well, I had it initially, and it was a real help for me to change how I eat. I don’t know what your eating habits are like, but I was obese because I ate way way way too many sweets, as comfort or habit. A couple of episodes of dumping early on made even the thought of sweets very unappealing - so I stuck absolutely to my programme and got to goal weight in 6 months. The dumping has passed and I wish it hadn’t - not it is just willpower and I know that isn’t my strong suit!! I am only telling you things because I would encourage you to do the thing that is best for your health. Those “problems” with a bypass are really small in the scheme of things. And there are a lot of people end up having a revision from VSG to bypass - often reflux related. So maybe try and be a bit open to the idea of a different surgery even if it is your second choice? A bypass will help you get thinner (on average) quicker (on average) and any side effects you have are entirely manageable - and reflux will be dealt with, so you’ll no longer be quietly damaging your insides.
