Need Some Counsel, Courage And Encouragement
traceyinflorida replied to SkinnyAnnie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is completely normal to be nervous and even to have second thoughts. Personally, I was going to do this two years ago and then changed my mind. I finally had the surgery a little over two months ago. I was so scared. But now my only regret is that I did not do it two years ago. I cannot even begin to describe the wonderful feeling of finally being free of the constant spector of food, how great it feels to be gaining control of my health and getting back into shape. As for the bad stories you read, you need to remember that often times people post because they are looking for help or support for a problem they are having. The ones who breeze through surgery and recovery don't always put that on the message board, unless asked. Here is a link to a recent thread of the all the good recovery stories. I hope it helps to balance things out for you a bit as you weigh your options. http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/47767-anyone-have-a-relatively-easy-recovery-story/ -
Decided on the sleeve but still have a couple questions
BeardedItalian48 replied to mikeross's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello------ I can only speak of what I know. I know that I am glad of going to Mexico Dr. Aceves and paying HALF what the states cost. I know that the care I got there was far far superior to any hospital I have ever been in. Now regarding calories and muscle building, to maintain muscle while working out you must have protein as you stated...to me I still have a stomach not as large so again to me it would seem that if I wanted to build I would ingest protien...like before. I am no expert. Regarding the cancer of the stomach...I too am predisposed for cancer, however, I am losing the weight and doing other things for my HEALTH. I refuse to allow the thought you threw out to enter. The way I figure it is HEY I am doing better weighing less.... -
Good for you for the pre-op weight loss! I lost 99 pounds (from 397 to 298) during my six-month, insurance-required diet program. It set me up for a successful surgery and post-op life. At first, I was worried that I wouldn't have as much success after the surgery, but I have. I've lost another 65 pounds since the surgery 3 months ago! Good luck as you continue your journey!

August Sleeves?!
MacSleever replied to gettinMeBack's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was August 1st. Have lost over 40 lbs so far. Pre-op weight: 297. DOS: 283. I don't weigh myself often because I am used to avoiding scales. I have my 2-month post-op meeting on October 1st. Been on soft proteins and looking forward to eating more solid food. -
During my pre-op testing for my sleeve surgery they found huge gall stones in my gall bladder. So the surgeon removed it and did a hernia repair at the same time as my sleeve. It would have only been a matter of time for me to have a gall bladder attack although I had none prior. I have known a few people to have it out at the same time... So I can't tell you the difference in recovery but I can tell you I had absolutely no problems with recovery from the "triple" surgery. I think it progressed as well as a sleeve gastrectomy alone. I am sorry you have to undergo another surgery, it is not uncommon after weight loss surgery, I know many people who have it within a year or so after the sleeve. Good luck

I lost 60 lbs in the 5 months before surgery. I knew I would just gain it all back without the surgery. I want to lose at least 75 more pounds. I love reading the success stories and find them very encouraging. I had surgery on 1/16/17, and I have not lost anything since. I am so afraid this will not work. I am 68, and have a bad back, so exercising is not easy. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Need Some Counsel, Courage And Encouragement
altagirl replied to SkinnyAnnie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I keep going through "sticker shock" as well. I think about all the things I can do with the $$ for my daughter. It is very hard for me to do something for myself - and when I mention my weight to friends they say "you are not that overweight" This is true compared to most people we know have WLS. I dress in a way that disguises my weight well but I am a complete apple and am pre-diabetic. I guess I don't have much to offer except I can relate to what you are feeling. -
Any Ladies At 5'5"? What's Your Story?
JLOR replied to jhansen71's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I too am 5'5" and am considering surgery. I'm currently at 195 and would love to be at 150...135...heck why not dream about 125. lol Seriously though if I was 150 I would be happy. Today, I exercise 5 times a week walking/jogging for an hour, but I am not doing well with dieting, so the weight stays on. I go today for my first appointment. So we shall see! -

I totally agree. I had an appointment at my gym to go over the weight equipment and meet with the trainers there yesterday. As luck would have it I was called to jury duty and it ran past the time of my appointment. I keep trying to make this stinkin' appointment and something always gets in the way. This will be my goal in to do by the end of the month for sure. Going on vacation next week so it will have to wait (again). -

Jhannsen I would incorporate weight training. By gaining more muscle you will burn more fat -
Hey everyone. I've been lurking for a few months. Thought I'd finally post since I had my surgery on 6/10/13. I had a revision from a band that I have had since 2008. I loved my band too, but after losing 123 lbs, it slipped last year. I gained 65 lbs back in about 10 months. I started having so many complications, EXTREME acid reflux being one. I feel hopeful that now ill be able to get this weight off me once and for all, but I'm still feeling some kind of way. Maybe it's the "starting all over again" feeling. Ugh! But anyway, so far so good, I'm keeping up with my daily liquids intake like I should. Just wished I was further along already.

Yes! I think we all did, because what weight loss program, diet, etc, have we not done that DID work? We are use to them not working. Plus, this is a big deal- surgery. It makes you think, "what I am doing this for?" Another failure? Everytime I would doubt myself I would get on this forum and read all of the sucess and I realized all of these people can't be wrong. I am a food addict. I was very worried that I wouldn't be able to stop eating when I was full so I didn't think this would work for me. I eat differently, I have new habits, I haven't had a diet coke since pre-op, I have lost 43 lbs and am making real changes in eating habits and am much more active.

I AM SO COLD ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!. I live in central Alabama so our summer this year was not extremely hot although the humidity was bad. I cannot stand for any element of cold air to blow on my skin. I am stocking up on the cuddl duds and use the heck out of my heated throw. But in all honesty, I am14.5 months post op and I am miserable. I could not wear all the cute summer clothes I bought because of this. we went to the beach in July and sitting in the sun on a warm sunny day felt like pure bliss to me. I hate this and really hope it will resolve itself. I look like freak wearing winter sweaters and leggings under my pants. Please pray for me. I have lost all the weight I needed to but I cannot live with this cold intolerance. it certainly has not gotten better over the summer months.....it has gotten worse if anything. I am so tired ALL the time. I can sleep 8 to 10 hrs and still do not feel refreshed. Most days I come home and take at least an hour nap after work. seeing an endocrinologist in a few weeks to get a complete work up on my thyroid because I do have an under active thyroid and take thyroid medicine for it. last check up I was slightly anemic....so I take Iron. I take a women's multi Vitamin, Calcium with extra d, sublingual b12, and Biotin on top of regular medication.

Back to liquids for most of the day....
songsmith replied to Margie122's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The important thing is that you're getting back on track. I'm not sure since I've never been a regular size but I suspect this is what people who don't have a weight problem do. They Celebrate, they look at the scale, say "oops I gained a bit there. Time to watch what I eat for a couple of days!" So don't be mad at yourself. You're acting like a thin person! That extra will come right off. -
Hi Everyone. I was banded on 2/13/09 in Fairfax, VA. I went to www.ALAGSA.com. My doctor was Dr. Eleariny. I live in Southern Maryland. I am 37 years old, married with 2 children. I want to be healthy and to be able to enjoy my children and someday - grandchildren. My starting weight was 226pds. My current goal weight is 160pds. Looking forward to meeting new friends for support throughout my process. Thanks - Karen

I'm having surgery on Thursday and I feel like I am going to be some weird case and it won't work. I'll still be able to eat food and not lose weight. Anyone else feel like that?

It's so u fair, Cuz there is so much more work to be done after you get the surgery to maintain a goal weight. I think some will understand and those that don't know the procedure and what it is will never respect the process.

Back to liquids for most of the day....
BLERDgirl replied to Margie122's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I understand the concern over the weight gain, but why not try a more balanced approach going forward? Do you good log? Try planning a snack in your schedule so those random bites here and there don't catch up yo you again? Also t coming up with non food ways of celebrating. Don't let this one misstep throw you back into yo-yo dieting. -
Banded 07/02...Waiting for my first fill... and HUNGRY!!!
Nuali replied to Susie Girl 75's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My doc waits 8 weeks post op to do the first fill. I was like you, very hungry and kind of worried about weight gain. Hang in there. You really do need the healing time before your first fill. It will come soon enough!! I had my first fill last Thursday and WOW! I already have restriction. So, hang in there. Nuali -
What do you tell ppl at work?
dodlbug replied to silhouette's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I told them exactly what I was doing. I've been thinking about doing this for a decade. I'm not embarrassed by it. Everyone knows I'm fat. I've tried to lose weight before and gained it all back. I want something where it isn't going to happen again. Let them think what they're going to think. If you are comfortable with your decision you should be able to tell them the truth. I finally had my official first consult with my Dr. last week, and talked with the insurance liasion about a week before that. Both are saying that Aetna has gotten very strict about the 2 year history. I've decided to do the 3-month program, much of which I have to pay for out of pocket. My Dr. warned me, though, that Aetna may still not approve me because of the lack of history. I am going to try putting together a photo portfolio and essay like I read here that some others have done. My BMI is over 42, I don't have any co-morbidities, and the only medical history I have is last year's physical, which has me at just under 40 BMI. I also can get my kids' birth certificates (2004 and 2007) that show me at over 40 BMI at the times of their birth, but that may not be acceptable as gain during pregnancy is expected and doesn't show a 'normal' state, weight-wise. I had a birth center birth and a home birth, so no hospital or doctor records there. Any ideas on what I might be able to do to improve my chances of approval? If it's a lost cause, then I want to know now before I have to pay for the 3-month program so I can start working on possible ways to self-pay. His office is also having a contest right now for a free surgery - which, of course, I entered. I'll find out later today if I'm a semifinalist. Here's hoping!

Hi there CurvyCat, My surgeon told me that Aetna is a breeze to deal with, but never mentioned that they might want a two year weight history. Aetna approved me for the three month plan. When all was said and done, they did ask for the two year history showing my weight. Well, I called my doctor and he sent me 5 years worth of history (it took them a few days, but wow, they sent some really detailed information)!! I faxed it to my surgeon's office on Dec. 11th and here I am still waiting. I just wish I would have known this during the three month wait because I could have requested my weight history from my doctor so it could have been sent it in along with all of my other paperwork for surgery approval. I hope that the 5 year history will be good enough!! I will post as soon as I know anything!! Good Luck!!

You've lost weight, take pride in it. The average weight loss per week with the band 6 weeks post-op is 1-2lbs a week. Are you tracking your calories? Measuring everything? What type of exercise are you doing?

Hi Everyone! I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem- when I am sitting either on a sofa, soft or hard chair, desk chair at work my butt starts to hurt. Doesn't matter if it's 5 min or an hour it hurts so much sometimes I have to shift myself so I'm more sitting on my hip. I had my sleeve done March 16 2015. Starting weight 221. I now weigh 130 ???? This has been going on for about 2 months now. No pain in my thighs or legs. Pain doesn't shoot anywhere else. Just at the fleshy buttocks area. I have to admit I'm not as fleshy back there as before my surgery. I'm wondering if I'm getting this because I'm not as big back there anymore. It's just frustrating especially at my desk at work having to shift from one hip to the other. Thanks!

Complications are pushing back my banding date.....I think
MaidMarion posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am now getting concerned that some health issues unrelated to my weight are going to push back my banding date. I have been without a sense of smell for just over 10 weeks. Because of this I can not taste anything. It started after I sprayed Round Up and then came down with a sinus infection. I went to my PCP and he was totally thrown. I have had two rounds of antibiotics and a round of steroids which I really hate because they make me cry....a lot. Now I have gone to an ear nose and throat specialist. He wants to do an MRI on my brain to just rule out a brain tumor. Now honestly I in no way think it is a tumor but he says he can't comfortably say that. So now on top of having some expensive spinal decompression done this month.....totally worth it as I am 100% better I now have to pay out of pocket for an MRI! :cursing: I am due to be banded July 14th. I liked the date as I think it should be lucky but I am beginning to wonder if higher powers are really against me having this done. Money is about to become a very big issue. On the plus side as of this morning I have lost 42 lbs since March 6 and most of that has come since Easter. If there is a possibility I will never taste again I don't really see any reason to be banded but I was so ready to have it done. Sadly though I have absolutely no urge to eat.....even while taking steroids. I actually find the act of eating horribly depressing. I am just at a loss right now and I needed to talk about it I suppose. Everyone around here just acts like I should be thrilled to be losing weight so easily but honestly I would so much rather be able to taste at least a single bite than not anything at all. I can not tell you how many times I have heard....oh I wish that would happen to me so I wouldn't want to eat.
