    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Update: I'll be on 2 weeks optifast starting Monday. Pre-op testing a week prior, then the green light. I'll have one week vacation followed by one week of computer-based training at work (as opppsed to field work), which is why I planned this when I did. Self pay questions

I did self pay in the Washington, DC area. I got a sleeve. I consulted with 3 places. I wound up going with a good program that was $19k (give or take) for the whole package, but it varied from hospital to hospital. If I had gone with the "big name" hospital in DC, I would have paid at least $26k for the same procedure (roughly, their communication sucked and I suspect my quoted number wasn't very accurate. I don't recall what the 3rd price option was. Price wasn't my driving factor - I liked the practice I went to best after the consults - but it was an added bonus. I don't remember what the bypass prices were. Anyway, the amount covered most things except additional pre-op testing like the endoscopy, chest x-ray, etc. I'd be careful about pre-op bloodwork. I wound up having to pay more than I should have if I had gone to LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics myself with the lab orders instead of getting them done at the hospital where my surgeon is based. The agreement included the surgeon fees, hospital stay for a routine procedure (up to two nights), anesthesia, all the random testing they do as a patient (i.e., bloodwork and such while admitted), food (haha more like broth and water), and follow up appts for a certain timeframe (I think a year, maybe 2?) It was all laid out in my self pay agreement. Honestly, it is the best $19k I have ever spent.

    Still pain at incision site

I'm sorry you're going through this for so long. You'll get varied responses here. I never had any pain and never took any of the pain medication. But others, obviously, have. It probably is "normal" like your surgeon said and if you need a pain pill, take one. It shouldn't be too terribly much longer before it settles down, like at the 4 week mark.

    Recovery time

For me its day 8 post op and I've noticed a huge pick up in energy levels. You'll be fine to live normally after a week with one caveat : if you deviate off the diet plan and are out and about you are not going to be in good shape. If you start dumping and are not home to lie down and rest you will not be able to function. So there is your choice, go back to work but take no chsnces with food. For me the golden ticket is fruit smoothie with protein powder. I've learnt my lesson Sent from my SM-G973F using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. Hi All, Denis from Ireland here. 8 days out from surgery. 322 pounds at the weigh in to gauge the anaesthetic and 308 pounds at at a weigh in yday. Some notes: had huge buyers remorse in hospital on day 2. I was a day late being released as my tummy wouldn't tolerate the cubitan. Was stessing but the overnight nurse was brilliant and calmed me down saying everybody is different. She was right day 3 was a huge day went home lunchtime day 4. I am a bit behind food wise i.e this morning is day 8 and soft food causes dumping. Let me clarify soft fiod that is not pureed e.g a dash of onion, or another example a mushroom soup with thyne and other flavours. Its not worh it. Key to the kingdom are freshfruit smooyhies with all the added protein powder you need for the day. Still get hunger pangs but if I consume my smothie as above I am ok Sent from my SM-G973F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Still pain at incision site

Hope you get some different responses to this I’m 3dsys post op and it’s definitely been a challenge can’t imagine 3 weeks.
  9. I thought this exact thought for literally decades (I'm in my 60s). I can't even tell you how many times I lost weight - sometimes as much as 50 or 60 lbs - just to gain it all back again a few months later. And I had over 200 lbs to lose. How on earth was I ever going to lose 200 lbs if I couldn't even keep 50 lbs off? Yet I'd try again...and again...and again. And yes - that 3-5% figure you heard is what I've read as well. Without surgical intervention, supposedly only about 3-5% of people can lose a lot of weight - and keep it off (although honestly, I'm surprised it's that high). Unfortunately, I wasn't one of the 3-5%. It took me 40 years to come to that conclusion. yes - you absolutely can regain all of your weight after having weight loss surgery. But your odds of losing a ton of weight and keeping it off are MUCH better than they are without surgery. I never, ever, in a million years could have lost those 200 lbs without surgery. And I wouldn't be sitting here almost seven years later, still managing to keep almost all of it off (like many of us, I did have a rebound during year 3. Most people seem to regain 10-20 lbs after hitting their lowest weight). This surgery has honestly been a miracle for me. It's not that I didn't have to work at it - I did - hard - but I never could have done this without surgery.
  10. Hey everyone I was wondering how long everyone had pain at the site where they took the part of your stomach out. I’m now 3 weeks out and still having very sharp pain. I still cannot bend down or anything. Just hoping it will feel better soon. The doctor said it’s normal but I just want others opinions.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Good luck to everyone having surgery tomorrow! I've got my final pre-op with the surgeon tomorrow. I'm expecting to get my pre-surgery diet instructions. I'm not nervous... I'm anxious to get to surgery day. It's been a long 9 month process of jumping through hoops with very low expectations of insurance approving my revision. Now that they have, I just want to get on to the next stage. I am ready for this stage. I'm all in. It's hard because my partner is having a sleeve bypass 1 month after I have my revision and she's in a much different mindset than I am. She's like "after the liquid phase, well be able to have whatever we want, just a bite or two" and I'm like "nope, I'm making healthy choices, I've been through this before, it truly is just a tool that will help you start those healthy habits so they stick long term" My 50th birthday is two weeks after my surgery and she thinks I can have a bite of ice cream cake. I'm like, no. So we are having some of my favorite foods that she makes and my birthday cake Friday night. Still gonna have a bigger party actually on my birthday with family and friends but that's just to celebrate and the food won't be an issue for me. Wow lol that was a lot! I'm overdue for a session with my therapist. Lol
  12. It gets better and better! I was so excited when I went from a 2x to non-plus sizes and could shop anywhere instead of a few retailers. I am a couple of weeks shy of one year post-op (March 18) and down to my goal. I love clothes shopping now and proudly heading to the size small section! I went from an 18-20 to a 4-6. Enjoy your journey!!!
  13. So I’ve been in preop phase for 8 months in prep for bypass. Long story short I switched doctors after 6 months with old doc. I love the new doctor and almost ready for surgery, just took some time to get all records from old dr. Now my husband is on board and he’s seeing new doctor to go through WLS as well. We went to our first support group meeting last night and now I’m very confused and I think he is too. We now have this mindset that “we can do this”. He hasn’t been one to read or research much as I do, and he was amazed at all the lifestyle changes and tools you use to rewire your head and to be successful. He says well if we can learn that now I think we can totally do this! He bragged on how far I had already come and changes I’d made and he said I really think we can do this. I’ve kinda had that feeling all along but then again here I am 8 months in and only 25lbs down. Tell me this is normal or tell me something, anything? Isn’t it only like 3-5% of people can actually lose the weight and keep it off without surgery? I’m just so at a loss on what to do now….
  14. check with your clinic. That could be symptomatic for a stricture, and you're still in the "window" for one (they almost always occur, when they're going to occur, between one and three months post-surgery (they're very rare after you hit the three month mark) they occur in about 5% of bypass patients. And they're an easy fix (I had two - at four weeks out and again at about eight weeks out)
  15. Thanks for the feedback. Yeah it doesn’t seem normal but I honestly don’t look up a lot of forums or ask for help. I like the weight falling off and amazingly I don’t really have a lack of energy despite never really eating anything. I work out at the gym three times a week. I mainly drink water through the day and one cup of oikos yogurt and that’s it
  16. I am almost three months postop and I have not been able to eat anything more than foods like yogurt or applesauce consistency. I have tried eating soft vegetables very well chewed up chicken tilapia etc and I throw up afterwards. Is this normal? I read about people eating eggs and soft foods but I can barely stomach a little yogurt or applesauce. I have my 3 month visit in less than two weeks any suggestions or thoughts on what I can do or say? Thanks

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi All, I have my surgery scheduled for March 15 and am about 2 weeks into my liquid+1 meal preop diet. But I'm struggling to lose weight even though I'm following the surgeon's guidelines. I'm super nervous they will postpone my surgery if I haven't met their weight loss goals for pre-op. Has this happened to anyone, any advice is welcomed?

I started the second week of pre-op diet yesterday which means only liquids. It’s actually not that bad because I’m full of liquid all the time. My mind tries to tell me that I want something to eat, but I’m truly not stomach hungry. I guess that’s good since the post-op diet is liquids for awhile, too.

It depends on what type of job you have. A desk job would be easier to go back to work sooner than a physically demanding factory line job. For the most part you'll feel fine, just tired maybe for the first part of a week.

Hello and welcome, I would never have begun the pre op diet earlier than needed its brutal. Everybody on these forums has a different diet given to them and a liquid diet seems to be voted the worst. My pre op was 3 weeks of only non starchy vegetables and nothing else and I cursed it and couldn't wait for it to end. The first 4 days of any pre op diet are truly the worst and then hunger pangs dissipate somewhat. Keep talking to the wonderful people in the forum and read the back pages, it really helped me. Good luck
  23. Hello IM NEW HERE. I have my surgery 03/21/22. Very excited and nervous at the same time. I suppose to start my liquid diet next Monday it I started it today just so I can get use to it by next week lol any advice on that. It was a struggle for me today I love food lol.

2 weeks post op & Stomach bloated....

Thank you who mentioned swelling can be for 6-7 weeks. Oddly, my huge emergency C section scar is invisible. I had this 1985 but was from belly button almost to under breasts and inch wide. Hmmm great if never surfaced again although at 61 who cares right? 😂
