    Feeling Unsure

Barb, I too had doubts as my surgery got closer. I think some doubts are normal. It is a major life style change, and one that you can't change your mind when you get tired of doing it. A week before my surgery, I started wondering if I was doing the right thing. I have always been fat, and have tried EVERYTHING under the sun to loose weight. I would always loose 40-50 pounds when I joined Weight Watchers (would you believe I joined 17 times!?!) But always gain it back when I got bored with the diet and quit. Usually gained another 5-10 lbs along with the 40-50 I had lost. Also tired Diet Center, Curves, Redux (the miracle diet pill. One of the side effects was supposed to be erotic dreams. I was really bummed when that didn't happen to me, and I didn't even loose that much weight on it!) Also tired Weigh Down Workshop, NutriSystem, Medifast, Optifast, Jenny Craig, Overeaters Annon., Overeaters Victorious, Slim Fast, etc., etc., etc. But now my health is at stake. As I enter my 60's (OMG that sounds old!) I find that I am (was) pre-diabetic, my blood pressure was creeping up, my cholesterol was up (I was on statin meds for that), I had really bad gastric reflux (on meds for that too), sleep apnea (breathing machine at night), bad arthritis (more meds) and the only thing I could see was more medical problems heading my way. I am (I think) a YOUNG 62, and want to live and enjoy my life for years to come yet. So I decided to commit to this and do it! I am bound and determined to get down to a normal weight and stay there. I wrote to a good friend who had a Roux N Y surgery 6-8 years ago, and asked her if she would do it again if she had it to do over. She said "in a heartbeat!" She has really struggled, and gained some of her weight loss back (lost over 120 lbs and gained 40-50 back). But says she is so much more comfortable and healthy now that she wouldn't go back for anything.I think you need to concentrate on one of the last things you said in your post "You ARE worth the effort!" Best of luck. Keep us all posted on how you are doing!

    Upcoming Surgery

Well, Monday is the big day. I am starting to get a bit antsy but I am looking forward to getting the show on the road. My surgeon, Dr. Goodnight, requires that we go on a 1000 calorie Atkins diet with max of 40g carbs for 10 days prior to surgery to help shrink the liver and make it easier and safer to do the surgery. The first 3 days were horrible but I have adjusted. Starting to miss my carbs though. I am not much of a meat eater so I have eaten some meat and a lot of protein supplements. I thought I would really miss Coke, but surprisingly, I haven't missed it at all. I am a grazer normally but I have been making myself eat regular meals. Amazingly I haven't really been hungry. I elected to do the diet for a full 2 weeks and with only 3 days left, I have lost 13.2 pounds. That's a great feeling. All that protein makes me bloated and constipated, so I am worried about how I am going to manage that with all the protein supplements I will be using. I bought some benefiber and I will be trying that. Hopefully it will help. Cheers to all you sleevers, may we all be successful in this journey.
  5. I have a poll in regards to hunger suppression. I have also created a few questions for those who have been sleeved at least more than a few months. I have been thinking about a revision from band to sleeve for more than awhile now. I keep going back and forth with it. I won?t go into details right now with my band because maybe I?m just being a little selfish with my reasons, but that to me is really important right now. I?m not getting any younger and I just want something that actually will give me what is advertised! Thanks to anyone who is willing to help out a bit? J I?m sure most of these questions have been asked a zillion times, but I?m going to start moving forward with this quickly and would like some ?one-stop-shopping!? LOL Questions: 1) How long have you been sleeved? 2) Who was your surgeon? 3) What were your experiences with your surgeon? 4) Would you recommend your surgeon? 5) How much weight have you lost since your sleeve date? 6) What type of sleeve do you have? 7) Would you recommend the type of sleeve you have? 8) Do you find you still have the necessary level of energy to sustain a good workout? 9) Do you find it difficult to keep the weight off once you have lost it? 10) Do you have trouble eating, such as getting ?stuck?? 11) What is the one things about getting the surgery that you regret? 12) Would you do this surgery again, or would you have made another choice? THANKS TO ALL!!! POLL QUESTION: What is your hunger level NOW in comparison to Pre-Sleeve? I am between 96% hunger cured to 100% hunger cured. I am between 90% hunger cured to 95% hunger cured. I am between 80% hunger cured to 89% hunger cured. I am between 70% hunger cured to 79% hunger cured. I am between 50% hunger cured to 69% hunger cured. I am between 26% hunger cured to 49% hunger cured. I am between 1% hunger cured to 25% hunger cured. I am 0% hunger cured.

  7. MY HUNGER IS GONE. If I go 4-5 hours without putting a little bit of Protein in my stomach - I feel the need to eat (kind of a blood surgar sag / hungry feeling)- but other than that - it's gone. 1) How long have you been sleeved? 3 1/2 months 2) Who was your surgeon? Dr. Nicholson from Plano, TX 3) What were your experiences with your surgeon? HE IS GREAT! 4) Would you recommend your surgeon? ABSOLUTELY! 5) How much weight have you lost since your sleeve date? 63 pounds 6) What type of sleeve do you have? Heck if I know - it works great. 7) Would you recommend the type of sleeve you have? Yes 8) Do you find you still have the necessary level of energy to sustain a good workout? Right now, I am anemic - so I get tired after 15 to 20 minutes. As my Iron levels get back to normal, I will get more stamina 9) Do you find it difficult to keep the weight off once you have lost it? Still losing- not the right person to ask 10) Do you have trouble eating, such as getting stuck? If I eat past the point of being satisfied/full - it is uncomfortable.(Did that once) Nothing has ever gotten stuck. 11) What is the one things about getting the surgery that you regret? Not doing it sooner - but my insurance just started accepting the sleeve - and I wouldn't want any other kind of WLS 12) Would you do this surgery again, or would you have made another choice? Yes, I would do it again. I have no interest in getting banded, having a duodenal switch, or getting a bypass.

    Who’s on Your Call List?

Alex, I never really felt this "urgency" post sleeve. I was super well prepared by my surgeon, nutritionalist, the booklet they sent home and the months reading this forum. Oh, and the FREAKING YEAR I spent in hell trying to decide if I was ready to have the better part of my stomach removed! I was well prepared. This probably sounds nuts, but the worst part for me was the band removal which was 3 months prior to the sleeve. I thought it was a no biggie, but I felt wounded. I had this hole where the port had lived for 10 years. I felt sickly, I felt feverish, I felt scared. I felt absolutely huge and somewhat hopeless. I went back and saw a PA at the surgeons office. He checked me over and we both agreed that it was primarily my emotional grieving. I very much appreciated that they took my worries seriously, checked me out and talked it through. I was fine, I just needed to be sad for a little while. Maybe not everybody needs this, but I credit so much of my success to the support from my surgeon's office.
  10. Hi guys, I was wondering your experiences regarding hair loss. My surgery is in 2 weeks, and one of the BIGGEST things I'm worried about is having hair loss with already thin hair. -- How severe was your hair loss on a scale from 1-10 (10 the worst, and 1 not much at all). -- At what month also did you see a decrease/stoppage of hair loss, and re-growth? I mean did you guys notice your hair feeling back to normal? For those of you who didn't have much hair fall, can you please relate to me what you guys did? May be hard to believe but I am a vegetarian, and I'm just worried if my hair fall will be even more extreme after the surgery because of this? Thank you all!

I'll be glad when I can........

    1. Walk past small children without fear they'll point to me and say to their mothers "She's fat" or something similar. 2. Not worry when I see the entrance requires going thru a turnstile. 3. look at myself in a group picture where I don't overwhelm everyone else by size. 4. feel that I'm not taking up so much room in any situation. 5. attach the seatbelts in any car. 6. attend a dressier event, not feel that I'm over-dressed. 7. look at my feet and they're not puffy. 8. fit in any chair without it killing my hips because its so tight. 9. go to the doctor, get an xray, or anywhere I have to lay down on a table, without struggling to get up by myself. 10. spring out of bed. 11. easily get up off the floor. 12. Easily get myself up and out of a cushy couch. 13. Enter a class or meeting room without first quickly scanning the room for the widest chair or the one without arms, and if nothing will work, quickly decide how to handle this with a minimum of embarrassment. That's all for now, getting late.
  13. Ok so we are always talking about our dates, pre-op diets etc etc that I needed a break for just a minute. So fill in the blank.. I'll be glad when I can........ It can be anything from fitting into your favorite sz 10 jeans to finally getting to ride the roller coaster....comfortably. Let's share and have fun with this. So I'll be glad when I can........

Not losing weight - very frusterated

Surgergirl...Don't flip out....It might just be taking you longer and eating dessert and wine won't make that huge of a difference if it's every once in a while. I had surgery 12/08 and I've almost lost 50 pounds. I have a 10 cc band have it filled 6.25 cc's. My doctor has always said that you should be able to live a normal life with the band, not give up everything....So don't be down on yourself. I know ppl who had the surgery around the same time as me and have lost double what I have, but I don't care. I'm still losing weight, feeling fabulous and not racing!!!! You're doing just fine Im sure, don't doubt yourself, your band will start kicking in soon!!!!

    CLOSE.....VERY CLOSE

One thing to consider is a metabolic test. Everyone's is different. My doctor has me do a 10-minute one where I have to breathe into a machine and it tells me what my rate is. You could use that test to work with your NUT on a detailed plan for you.

    8 weeks

Memily firstly congrats.!!!!! Secondly how much weight have you lost so far? I know everyone's journeys are different, just trying to get a gauge. I'm 13 days post op. Started at 275lb lost 19 lbs in 4 weeks including pre op diet
  17. Remember eating too few calories can also put you into a stall. The body will hold onto every calorie since it's doesn't know when more will come. I wasn't an overeater. I was a disorganized eater. I could wake up at 8, get a cup of coffee around 10 and then not eat anything until 8 -9 pm easily. Then when I did eat it was typically some carb laden meal. Usually a plate of Pasta with some veg and a creme sauce. One of the first things I did when I started trying to get healthy nearly 4 years ago was begin to eat regularly and change the quality of food I ate.

    Skinny Bucket List

Oh man... my list would be too long to imagine, but here are a few things (some of these are mentioned by others earlier in the thread, but what the hell...) 1. Bikini! I so want to wear a bikini... and look good in one. I technically COULD wear one now, but I would look like Jabba the Hut on vacation. 2. Short shorts. I am so envious of girls in the summer wearing flip flops and short shorts... 3. Knee high boots. I have thunder calves and no boots will fit me. And I LOVE boots. 4. I want to be IN the picture, not always trying to be the photographer... or if I must be in the picture, hiding in the back. 5. I want to stop demanding to see every picture right after it was taken, going EWW and forcing people to delete the picture. I even get irritated when people shorter than me try to take my picture, because I know that through sheer laws of physics... the picture will not be taken from the convenient fat girl angle (you know you know the one) 6. I want to be able to travel and feel comfortable and look good... and take vacation pictures that I am in. I would have a hard time proving I have been anywhere as it stands now, since I am never ever in any of the pictures. 7. Enjoy hiking... no huffing and puffing and profuse sweating and praying for death on the way... 8. Be able to shop anywhere and find clothes that fit. I hate being ousted to plus size sections of one or two stores in an entire mall... 9. Get attention! I hate feeling like I am invisible. I swear that it's not just men too, women are more attentive to thinner women as well (like in stores, etc) 10. Not feel irritated and angry whenever I try to dress up. Every party or special even starts off like that, with me mad at the world... 11. Not have to get up early the day after a big night out to nervously sit by Facebook to untag myself in all the pictures! 12. I want to wear something form fitting. No more empire waists, please! 13. I want to be able to run without more things jiggling than should be jiggling 14. I want to wear sky high hooker heels without having to have my feet amputated 30 minutes later 15. I want to feel less self conscious about myself... 16. I want to find jeans that fit me! If they fit my butt, I can't button them. If I can button them, I could fit an entire Bosnian family into the rest of them with me. Ugh. Stupid mafioso gut. 17. I want to feel sexy and attractive 18. I have never required a seatbelt extention but I am really self conscious about sitting on planes and busses because I take up so much space, I feel like I bleed into the seat next to me and I always feel bad for the stranger sitting there when I walk up to take the seat next to them. 19. I want to be able to paint my toenails without effort. 20. I want to not snore anymore! lol Alright... enough for now...

    Skinny Bucket List

I have totally loved reading everyone's skinny bucket lists!! Here are 10 of my to-do's once I reach my goal weight: 1. Fit back into my wedding dress and have a "trash the dress" photo shoot! I totally want to do this: http://www.libbyjamesblog.com/2011/01/13/trash-the-dress/ 2. Go on a float trip (where I live folks get together in large groups, rent canoes, drink adult beverages, and float down the Buffalo River) and wear a bikini and look DAMN GOOD in it! 3. Skip my high school reunion - NOT because I am fat, but because I am just way too busy with my life! 4. I want to fit back into my seven and citizen jeans...and then I want some new pairs! (I just can't see spending the money on designer jeans right now...but when I get down to my goal weight...some new jeans are mine!) 5. Not feel embarrassed when I run into old friends...'cause I will be looking soooo good! 6. Re-energize my love life with my husband 7. Shop, shop, and shop some more! 8. Actually take friends up on their offers to come over to their house to hang out in their pool 9. Wear dresses in the summer heat and not have my thighs stick together...mine don't even rub they just don't separate, it is like they have post-it note glue on them or something 10. When I hit goal...hello tummy-tuck!!!

    Employers and Surgery

E is an fmla requirement that you have at least a certain number of hours with the employer. I think it is 1250? I'm not sure when you started with your job but they may be saying December because you are not yet eligible under the federal law. Fmla is the family medical leave act. The federal government requires all employers over a certain size to comply with this law. I think it is 10 employees minimum. Fmla gives employees the right to apply for job protection due to illness, pregnancy, or to care for a family member with an illness. If you meet the criteria your employer must grant you up to 12 weeks of leave to return to work. The leave can be paid or unpaid according to individual company policy. Short term disability pays your wages upon illness or accident.

    Cross addiction post op?

I wish, 5'5" and still a size 10 in shoes. I guess it's good that my old shoes still fit, but I'd love to be a size 9, makes shoe shopping that much easier.

What I look forward to post-op

Wonderful post, Sandee! At 12 weeks post op (has it really been that long????), I can say I feel awesome. Better than I have in years - not only physically, but mentally. I wake up in the morning and feel good - no headaches, no aches and pains (unless I had a hard workout the day before LOL), and I look forward to what the day has to offer. I no longer feel like I'm trudging thru my life - I'm living it and I'm happy. That's a 180 degree change from 4 months ago. This is an amazing journey - I know that it's not all sunshine and lollipops every day and I have ups as well as downs, but I can tell you the good/great days outnumber the bad ones 10 to 1. I wish you all the success and happiness!

    Complications

Not to take away from the original post, but my program considers bariatric surgery elective as do those from everyone I've spoken to about it at both of the support groups I attend. Regardless of the classification, my insurance covered part of the cost, though I had to pay a great deal out of pocket. All of that said, I'd do it again in a heartbeat, regardless of cost. After getting to the point I am so far (still 19 pounds from my goal) I've been given a new lease on life and even if I were forced to pay hundreds of thousands (instead of just tens) I'd do it again without question. It took me a little longer than SugarFreeMe to get from Obese to Overweight, but then again I started my journey at almost double her weight. I'll never get into the "healthy" category according to the BMI calculators, but without a doubt I definitely feel and act healthy. I'm now able to do many physical things I would never have been able to dream of the last 15 years.
