Are you following a Paleo Diet?

To say we should eat like a caveman is like saying we should feed our pets all raw diets because their wolf ancestor do. It's theories like that that keep those of us in the veterinary field in business...mostly due to serious GI infections, recurrent diarrhea, perforated intestines and my least favorite, impacted colons. I'm not saying that the paleo diet contains unhealthy elements, it's just that it seems incomplete. Paleolithic man was basically limited to eating what was locally available. A caveman living in Europe ate differently than one living in Northern Africa or Asia. And where is horse listed on the paleo menu?....this was a big food source for some Stone Age tribes. And they didn't eat dairy because they hadn't domesticated animals yet, not necessarily because it was bad for them. Like someone else said, it's basically a marketing ploy like so many other fad diets. And to say you eat "mostly" paleo or paleo X% of the time is like a "vegetarian" saying they only eat chicken once or twice a month.
  2. Just add what you like. I start with Isopure unflavored - 26gms Protein, add anywhere from a whole to half cup of FAGE 0% greek yogurt 23 -12gms protein. Maybe a ¼ cup of Water to help blend. Then toss in anything you want. tbsp almond butter, a dash of cacao(chocolate) powder, some fruit, some chopped spinach. It's a big protein boost to start the day and takes the pressure off the rest of the day. My big meals are Breakfast and lunch because I am most active those times of day so if my calories go a little higher I am more likely to burn them off. Most evenings my dinner is a small vegtable salad with black Beans and an egg as my protein or Soup with a half a scoop of Isopure added. I've never been an evening/late night snacker. I might have a cup of tea or some fruit in the evening but often I don't have anything. I don't know if it's because I am a vegetarian or not but my calories tend to be a lot lower than most people's are at 6 months. I still get in between 700 - 900 calories a day. I don't think Larabars are really high in protein. I think at most they have between 9 -11gms of protein. I just keep those and nuts(typcally almonds or pistachios) in the car for on the go days so I don't turn to fast food. French Fries are my weakness. This was another thing I started doing pre WLS.
  3. I supplement with shakes for multiple reasons. I'm not a morning person and it's easier for me to make a shake in the morning. I made them before WLS and they were always some vairation of Protein powder+greek yogurt that I would add fruit, veg or nut butter to. Since I am vegetarian, protein shakes definitely help me get in extra protein. Prior to WLS my own person protein goal was 50gms or more. Now I aim for 70+. I doubt I would hit that w/o a shake a day. I've never been a bar person. many have things I can't eat such as artificial colorings, sugars and stevia. They are add too many carbs to my diet and I already have to watch that because of where my food proten comes from (mostly Beans and green veg). The bar that I do like and can eat like Larabars and Lenny & Larry's taste too good. Especially the cookie like bars. I don't buy them because I caould easily see myself over eating them. I keep 1 -2 Larabars in the car in case of emergencies, but I don't make them a part of my routine. However I am a homecook. I never had a problem getting in the kitchen and experimenting. It's what got me throught the all liquid phase and it's how I keep my Protein drinks from not being boring. I also knew from previous weight loss attemptd tht I don't lose if I eat too many carbs and I *really* don't lose eating heavily processed foods.

    Soft Foods

I ate refried Beans on my soft food days. I would drink mainly Protein shakes and just the 1-2 oz of refried beans each day. I waited until after the puree foods stage to eat the more actual chewing required foods. My puree stage was only about a week or two. My center suggested yogurt as well, but I didn't like it too much since most of it has a bunch of carbs. Here's a list my doc/nut give to patients. Strained Soups broth and lowfat cream based soups (try stirring jar baby food meats into your Soup to increase protein) Lite-low fat strained yogurt of plain greek yogurt protein fortified strained hot cerials like cream of wheat or cream of rice low fat 1% cottage cheese or ricotta cheese protein fortified cooked and mashed or pureed potatoes and non gas-forming veggies like carrots, squash, green beans, or peas. mashed black, pinto or navy beans lowfat, fat free or vegetarian refried beans or hummus protein fortified sugar free and low fat or fat free pudding **They say to fortify these foods with protein try adding unflavored Protein powder OR add 2 tbsp of non-fat dry milk (the milk adds about 5 g of protein)
  6. In all honesty, my dad, probably same generation? Would have said, this is what's being made, eat it or not, your choice. It's what their parents did, some even born during depression years when if you had anything to eat, it was a blessing. Having said that, I have vegetarian sibs, one veg child, one super clean eater, one only organic, free range etc.. So, I do the best I can, but sometimes, all it takes is asking, could you set aside some sauce only for the vegetarian, sauce and organic or free range etc... And it works out. The other option is bringing your own version and not missing out on quality family time. I see my sibs about once a year, and it always saddens and disappoints me, when the one who is strictly organic refuses to come, possibly because something was prepared incorrectly. Part of the problem was so many family functions revolve around food, because let's face it, everyone has busy work, school, athletics, etc... But everyone needs to eat, and feed our relationships too. Good luck to you, you are right in that it gets easier the longer you are on your path to health!
  7. I think this part was easy for me. I'm a vegetarian with food allergies. Unless I was out with only vegetarians I was always odd man out. I was never tempted to eat the foods I'm allergic to because my allergy reaction was anaphylaxis. I learned long ago to either not eat or bring my own. I also became quite adept at informing people beforehand. I'd say something like "I'd love to come & spend time with you all but I can't have ____. I don't want to put you out. Do you mind if I bring my own?" If the family was having lasagna, you could have done a ricotta bake. Similar flavors so you wouldn't feel deprived. Sometimes people would ask what I could eat and make it for me, but I never expected that. I always made sure people knew it was their company that I valued the most.
  8. You can eat carbs. You can even eat breads & such in moderation. I have a long way to go so I personally avoid breàds, pastas, etc... However I do eat a lot of carbs because I a vegetarian and most of my plant based Proteins also contain carbs. I still eat out at restaurants and the like, but at home I cool mostly from scratch. I had a lot of questions pre-op and I did a lot of research in my own as well as discussed things with my nutritionist.

    What's everyone eating?

Today I had coffee with a scoop of Protein powder for breakfast lunch was a Hilary's black bean & adzuki burger with a bit of shredded cheese topped with a sunny side up egg & salsa dinner was 1 cup of homemade cabbage & white bean Soup. I added half a scoop of unflavored Protein Powder to the broth. I'm 6mths in & a vegetarian. According to myfitnesspal my calories for today are 741, carbs 41 & protein 92. Sunday is my lazy day so I eat light.

    Craving junk food!

Thanks gowalking but I liken my new nutrition to that of a vegetarian. I can get down things like collard greens, cabbage, green Beans, and oh Boston Markets seasoned Spinach (to die) but theyve gotta be cooked to mush. Vegetarians dont eat solid Proteins eithers. Oh and I love Peanut Butter. I do understand about the siders tho. But when I was able to eat solid proteins ie chicken beef fish, I lost nothing at all. I attribute 95% of my weightloss to not being able to tolerate these solid proteins.

Still Attend Support Group Meetings as a Vet?

@@MichiganChic - I'm only 6 mths in, but I also view the support groups as a sort of pay it forward. I remember in my pre-op stage I liked hearing from Vets. I also think since I took a somewhat unusual approach to bariatric diets because of being a vegetarian with food allergies that It may be helpful to any other people on vegetarian diets to know that it can be done. meat eaters don't realize it but listening people talk sometimes all your hear is "meat, meat, meat." If you don't know any better this can be discouraging. I just happen to be the heard headed person who never takes "No" for an answer.

"picky eaters" - my pet peeve

I will admit that I'm somewhat of a picky eater, but it's not because I just don't like whatever it is that I'm picky about. There's certain textures and flavors that simply make me gag, to the point of vomiting. It's a little hard to force yourself to eat something when it can literally make you vomit. Fish, for example, I can only eat if it has a firmer texture and doesn't taste like fish, because "fishy" flavors make me gag. Shrimp and other seafood/shellfish is an absolute no-go, due to the flavor and the texture (like old Jello that's been allowed to sit uncovered in the refrigerator and develop a hard film on it). Anything with a thicker layer of fat on it or a greasy texture is a no-go, due to the texture of the fat (thicker bacon, rib-eye steak, chicharrones, some sausages, etc.). I am better about it than I used to be, though. I now eat some types of Beans, mushrooms, and ground meats, and those were no-gos a few years ago. Vegetables are generally pretty safe for me, to the point where I've actually considered becoming a vegetarian.

"picky eaters" - my pet peeve

My pet peeve is people who call someone a "picky eater". I have multiple food allergies. You better believe I read labels and don't eat or drink everything put in front of me. I probably would be considered a "delicate eater". I also have a bit of a tactile issue with certain textures and cooking methods even when they make little sense. The biggest oxymoron? Carrots. I will eat them raw or very lightly steamed. Cooked the make me gag. The exception? Carrot cake. But here's the thing, you'd be surprised at hows fat finds you. I have been vegetarian for 15 years. I gained from a combination of illness and an over reliance on carbs. Even adjusting my eating couldn't reverse the damage that chronic conditions and years of bad eating had done.
  14. Yup, I did. I am a vegetarian and I missed my veggies. I started adding spinach to my smoothies in week 1. The best part is, it may help you not become constipated.

    So losing...

It depends on how much you needed to lose overall and how close to goal you are now. Perhaps the doctor was asking if you are meeting all your Protein and Fluid goals. I make it a point to hit at a minimum 70gms of protein and to get in 64 ounce of fluid or more. For me most of my fluids come from Water and the rest from Protein shakes. I am vegetarian so it's easy for me to follow protein first then vegetables. I also work out 5 -6 times a week. I was sleeved 9/18 and have lost 75lbs. I think I''m probably average for weight loss. Keep in mind some people are slow losers, just like some are fast losers.

    Constipation

@@Tauruslady5 - That is true only for added fiber, particularly fiber like psyllium. If you are eating high fiber foods you won't have that problem. I am a vegetarian. I eat A LOT of Beans as part of my Protein. I also eat a far amount of green, leafy veg. I get in 64 ounces of Fluid regularly. I am as regular as clockwork. To the OP. You can try a variety of things. Colace, ducolax, prune, epsom salt in grapefruit juice, benefiber, milk of magnesium. There have been loads of suggestions in this thread and many, many threads on this board. My doctor was more proactive and started me on a 30 day course of colace day 1 in the hospital. I had my first BM on the 3rd day home and have been regular ever since. I haven't need to use anything to keep me regular. Once normal functions returned I was right as rain.
  19. I am vegetarian as well. As you can imagine being a vegetarian with severe food allergies can be a bit of a challenge on a bariatric diet. Nonetheless it can be done.
  20. Hi all, thanks for the continued thoughts. I'm very much encouraged by your experiences. I definitely will log for at least 6 months, and will probably keep track of Protein for ever, as I am a vegetarian. (I don't know how I marked this "answered" -- I'm new on this forum and must have pushed the wrong button.) I'll keep reading every response, and following this forum. It's so enlightening and encouraging.
  21. First of all I talked to my nutritionist. I wanted to make sure she was aware that I was vegetarian and allergic to artificial sweeteners and stevia. I think did my homework. I spent 2 weeks reading and searching for Protein powders. I didn't eat jello or popsicles. The first 2 weeks I was on full liquids. I did a lot of FAGE 0% greek yogurt. I would mix it in the nutra bullet with Protein powder. I finally settled on Isopure unflavored. It's 100% whey isolate. No coloring's or sugars added. I also added cacao powder or ½ tbsp almond butter to my shakes. I also used vegetable broth. I pureed black Beans, strained the skins and thinned it out with veg broth. I drank organic Kefir. In the hospital I was given Pro-Source no carb. I mixed that with herbal tea first thing in the morning. I did use CVS whey protein powder for a bit. It has sucrolose in it. (Generic splenda) I didn't have too much of a reaction to it, but I switched to the Isopure since that mixes with hot or cold. I drank mostly water. Some very diluted apple juice. I found that I did better with lots of ice.

Bandista I am so sorry for your loss. Good to deal with it without food I am learning to deal with stress better and not eat my way into a coma. I had the best thing ever today, after the bad Chinese food incident, I ate very lite today and had a liquid lunch Protein shake. tonight I made a blackbean burger with an egg on it. it was so good. can't believe I am eating vegetarian.. lol but honestly it was better than most burgers and full of flavor and protein .
  23. Hi Janex43, i had my revision from band to sleeve done last Oct. i know exactly what you mean with regards to the band. My life pre sleeve was non existent as i was just simply too embarrassed to go out to eat and try and eat something when i knew that id be disrupting everyone by rushing off to the bathroom. There wasn't a day that went by without me hurling up some food. Post sleeve it has been a learning curve, don't get me wrong, i have had to rush to the bathroom, but that is because i was trying to work out what my sleeve would accept and its not anywhere near as bad as the band! I Love, Love, Love my sleeve!! I cannot eat meat or dairy, i cannot eat corn in any form and i now have GERD, but put all these small things aside, i can go out and have dinner with friends and family - i just now select foods that are vegetarian or seafood! I just finally feel normal! I wish you all the best with your weight loss journey xox

Super Nurses With Sleeves (Support Group)

@@LDAF Greetings! I'm an RN living in PA and works in Baltimore Maryland, about an hour south. For soft foods, soup was my friend and vegetarian chili. Also cheese sticks were great buddies! If you are a fish fan, tilapia and salmon are great. I fried mine in a pan with olive oil, lemon, and a touch of salt and pepper. The oil helps the plumbing out... If you can't tolerate the oil, I'm sure Pam would work fine. Looks like you have made great progress.

Solaray Cal-Mag Citrate with Vitamin D 2:1 Ratio - 180 vegetarian capsules (1,000 mg Calcium Citrate 400IU Vitamin D) is $10.49 at allstarhealth.com, $11.33 at VitaminShoppe.com, and really cheap at Whole foods - which is where I buy it. I don't remember the exact price, just that I thought "Hey, that's not bad at all for 180 capsules".
