    September Surgery Buddies!!

Hey I dont have a thyroid problem nor do I know much about it but the fatty liver thing is quite common for obese people. Fortunately the liver recovers incredibly well and fast so that the more you lose and eat healthy the better it will get! I’m so jealous you’re so close to your goal weight! Thats amazing!!! I’m literally half way. 80lbs down, 80lbs more to go!
  2. Hello all, I just discover this forum, it is great to have a group of people sharing experiences, I found that no matter how much I thought I read about the surgery, it is different when you are living it. I had my surgery on 2/3/22 my weight was 253 I was loosing weight fast but yesterday and today I slowed down, I am 235 today but not complaining. I am having issues drinking the recommended amount of water and since today I can have non clear liquids, I will have some oatmeal for breakfast, I am excited, the complication so far is that maybe one of the medicines gave me an allergy my face was all red and it was painful but that is going away now, I started working from home yesterday and sitting for long periods hurts my incisions I have to remember to stand up more often, but that was one of the contributing factors to my weigh. Good luck to all of you who are going trough this, a friend of mine who had the same surgery keeps reminding me that it will get better soon.
  3. I had RNY surgery in 2005. Once I was able to eat soft foods, I threw up a few times. 1st was getting used to eating eggs. The next few times was my brain, mouth and stomach not adhering to the fact that my stomach was small (eating too much) and eating too fast. Once I retrained my brain, it has been fine. I might get the dumps every once in awhile but that's because I ate some ice cream or something very sweet. Don't take too much heed on people who have the horror stories. They are usually the ones not following the rules and have not accepted the reason they gained weight in the 1st place. You will do great, make the right food choices and decide how to proceed with your weight loss journey.

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

I'm six months out. I have spit up food once in all that time. Something just did NOT agree with me, but I figured it out fast and stopped eating so while I was miserable for a bit, it passed and then I felt fine. After that, I avoided the culprit and haven't fun into another situation like that. No other vomiting or spitting up. Of course it varies from person to person and you can't predict how your body will react, but it isn't guaranteed that you'll have a lot of problems.

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

I had sleeve, but I think the issues are similar. 1) Throwing up after surgery isn't nearly as unpleasant as before surgery. 2) I have been nauseous a lot and have thrown up a number of times after taking my multivitamin, so I take it at night and then have a snack, like a protein bar or cheese. 3) When I eat too much or too fast or the food is really dry I might throw up but very rarely, like right after surgery I had some chicken from a take out place and the first time it was fine, but then I tried to heat up the leftovers and it was not so good. 4) I am more nauseous and vomit more than most people I know who have had surgery. I'm five months out and it's getting better.

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

This has not been my experience. At first (say the first three months) I had to be quite careful about how much I ate. I only vomited once or twice, and it was entirely due to my eating too much, too fast. Now weighing out food and eating more slowly has become second nature, and I simply don't have that issue.
  7. I had a further thought about this: years ago, I spent a few months doing intermittent fasting. I would have days when I would not eat until dinner. On those days, I was absolutely freezing, whereas on the days I didn't fast, I was only my normal level of cold. I wonder if it has something to do with not eating? I thought about this today when I didn't get to breakfast and then I had to go out, and then someone came over, and in the end, I didn't eat real food until after 1pm. I was very cold today!
  8. I vomit when my stomach says no thanks. For me this typically means I ate too fast but sometimes if it's just something that doesn't agree, and often these are things I shouldn't have eaten anyway like a few bites of rice or ice cream. But for the most part there aren't specific food types that disagree with me, just eating too quickly. The loud stomach noises are just your new normal. The hiccups, chest pressure, runny nose are all good indicators of just fullness.
  9. lizonaplane

How to tell if something doesn't agree with me?

The stomach sounds are normal. Most sleevers don't dump; that's more common with bypass, and even then it's only about 30% of people. When something doesn't agree with me, I have diarrhea or vomiting. The diarrhea is often from sugar alcohols or too much coffee. The vomiting is usually from my vitamin or sometimes eating too fast. You're not going to "ruin" your surgery by eating something that doesn't agree with you.

    My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22

First issue! I am about 10 days post op and I drank my protein shake too fast today. I am absolutely miserable!! Stomach ache and cramps are sooo bad. I called my doctors office and they told me I am ok and that it’s my new stomach not liking how fast I consumed the protein shake. This is awful! LESSON LEARNED!! Lol
  11. Organic chemicals, toxins, and hormones are all stored in your fat cells. When you lose weight they get dumped in your body, fast. This may be what you're experiencing. https://www.popsci.com/when-you-lose-weight-your-fat-cells-release-more-than-just-fat/

    PNW Recommendations?

Yep, it is! I actually had 3 procedures done in one shot: Tummy Tuck, Arm Lift and Breast Lift. It all depends on your surgeon, and what their policies are on how long they want their patients under and basically how fast they work with or without help, etc. Im in Canada so I can’t really help in terms of recommendations nor pricing, but I will say that plastics is a game changer and am excited for you! Good Luck and keep us posted!! ❤️

    Sandwiches and chips

9 days is scary early for this. I'm 11 days and had my first tablespoon of fat free cottage cheese, chewed to nothing, just now. Many people see surgery as a good place to turn many things in their lives around which is wonderful. But it's for fat loss, nothing else. You can eat "dirty" (hate that word) and do fine. I lost a huge amount of weight and kept it off for 5 years until an unforeseen life event by eating bunless fast food burgers on a salad. It doesn't all have to be tofu and chia pudding. If that's not you it's not you. I'd dump the bread though unless you genuinely love it. Even when I was eating full tilt I used to get lettuce wrapped 5 Guys. Sometimes two of them. Bread and fries were never my bag. But if you really love bread, eat it sometimes. However, not optional: water, protein, vitamins and not drinking during and after you eat. Otherwise this is your life, enjoy it.

    Food Before and After Photos

Really value and appreciate what each of you have said here. Thank you for your perspectives! I balance and evaluate the nutrition, how clothing fits/the mirror and how I feel. I, too, could not maintain the lowest weight at 113. Unrealistic. I was too gaunt. Then, it was 118. Then, 122. I feel my best at 125 pounds. Very realistic. However, when it began to creep up to 130 this winter (adjusting to a new climate) - that was unacceptable! Sooooo a combination of re-grouping my strategy, getting back to a regular routine after many major life changes along with intermittent fasting - this week, I'm at 128. I do look forward to working on the remaining 3 pounds by the end of the month. I know this is not the fashion post - but I believe it is good to remind ourselves, like Silly Kitty said - the mirror speaks volumes. Another very important tool to our health and well being. We all know some fluctuations are normal. But aren't you glad our conversation with ourselves has changed? And, we do care now. Not obsess, just vigilant. I went for years before my sleeve tool - once allowing my weight to pile on and upwards to 298! I am so proud of all of us that we can dialogue and have this honest conversation. This week at 128. I never dreamed I'd ever wear stretch pants, wear tall slender boots and a belted jacket... It just spurs me on to reach my 125 goal in a healthful and satisfying manner. Red cabbage and date salad tonight.
  15. In 2012 I had lab-band surgery. My body hated the band from the start; nothing but problems. I lost about 82 pounds with the band but mainly only due to being unable to eat and vomiting. I developed acid reflux so bad that I slept sitting up for three years. I visited my doctor in 2017 and told him I could not deal with it anymore. He suggested converting to VSG. At the time, the surgery was not known for its acid reflux issues. I was converted in Dec 2017. Acid reflux left, and for one year, I felt normal. However, immediately after the conversion surgery, I never felt restriction. I felt I could eat normally. One year after the conversion, reflux returned. Now with a hernia, gastritis, and GERD. My bariatric doctor had passed away, so I went to a gastro doctor to have an EGD done. He sent me to a surgeon who suggested converting to RNY. I did not want to have a third surgery, so I put it off for another year as I thought the medications they prescribed would help. They didn't work. We just kept increasing the dosage. Fast-forward to this year, and I visited a new bariatric doctor who just completed another EGD on me this past Monday. All the same, issues are still there but now Barretts Esospogus. Insurance is denying the repairs as they were caused by bariatric surgery, which is ridiculous. I am a vocalist and truly worried about esophagus cancer as my lining has already been severely damaged. I will probably have to self-pay for the three-part surgery, and I am not happy about that. I am curious has anyone else had to have all three surgeries? If so, I would like to hear your stories and success. As I mentioned, I lost with the band. However, I gained most of the weight back after the band was removed and had to wait for the VSG conversion. I never really lost weight at all the sleeve. If you had all three surgeries, did you improve with acid reflux, gastritis, GERD, and were you losing any weight? Did any of you have Barretts Esophagus? I will know my fate next Friday, Feb. 11th

If you use the exercise app it will automatically consider it exercise no matter how fast you go but for it to just record it on its own as exercise you have tO walk faster. You may find if you have to park far out from a destination and your in a hurry that you will get a random minute or two recorded for example. I don’t know if it just goes by how fast your steps are or if it uses heart rate??
  17. This is very interesting and is a current issue that I have been battling for two years to have covered by my insurance company. I had lab-band done in 2013. Starting weight was 317 and got down to 222 pounds. However, I suffered from extreme acid reflux, causing me to sleep sitting up for three years. I was vomiting acid and sick every meal. When I spoke to my doctor about this, he immediately suggested conversion to VSG. While awaiting the approval for the VSG conversion, they made me do it in two parts. One surgery to remove the band, wait six months for the stomach to reshape itself, and then complete the VSG surgery. I gained 50 pounds back of my lost weight. I had the conversion done in December 2016. Everything went well. Acid was gone. However, I never felt restricted at all. I never really lost weight. Fast forward one year to 2017, and the acid returned. In 2019, after having severe complications from acid reflux and developing a nightly cough, I called my doctor only to find out that he had passed away. I decided to see an upper GI doctor who did an EGD and found me with Hernia, GERD, and Esophagus damage. He sent me to a surgeon specializing in throat cancer and bariatric issues. Submitted to have surgery was denied. We have been battling this for almost two years. I went this past week to another bariatric doctor familiar with my deceased doctor's work and also completed an EGD himself on me this past Monday. Same thing, Hernia, GERD, and now they believe I have Barretts Esophagus. They submitted to the insurance to repair and again denied. Insurance says these complications came from bariatric surgery and did not cover even if medically necessary; My new doctor is also a lawyer (go figure); he is completing a peer-to-peer next week to try to have them complete the repair one final time. If approved, I will only need to pay for the bypass conversion. So fingers crossed. I feel as if my insurance company would rather me die of esophagus cancer than keep me from dying from cancer. It is truly sad.

LOL. I'm usually the one venting to my parents! My apple watch didn't have me going fast enough to get "exercise" minutes, but I can't really work up steam. I might try going into the hallways outside my apartment, but not on the phone!

That’s exactly what I do. My husband usually checks in with me from work when he is eating his lunch and my mom calls at some point to vent about something most days and with both of them I answer the phone And get to walking. According to Apple Watch I am going fast enough to get exercise minutes in and I usually get around 45 on average per day.
  20. I’m so happy for you I wanted to cry! I have a seven year old and feel the same way about doing things with him. He told me it’s not fun to play catch with me anymore since now I’m fast and can catch him. I love capturing him and smothering him with kisses!

    Diet

Are you still in contact with your dietician? They’re always the best place to start. Go back to tracking & measuring your food if you don’t do this anymore. It’s easy to get complacent & less vigilant & eyeballing isn’t always accurate. I do random checks now to make sure I’m not over estimating portion sizes 😉. Ensure you’re still hitting your protein & fluid goals too. I do that every day. How many calories you should be aiming for will depend on many things like age, gender, level of activity, etc. i eat about 1300 calories. As for portion size I always consider the recommended portion size as a starting point. Sometimes I eat less, some times I can eat the recommended serving size. It depends on what I’m eating, how hungry I am & sometimes what my tummy is up for. For e.g. I can always eat more vegetables & today I could only eat about 3/4 of my usual serve of porridge. As for your food choices, again that is very individual. You need to work out a way of eating that best suits your lifestyle & is sustainable. For me that means prepping most of what I eat myself. I keep my meals fairly ‘clean’. Lowish fat, lowish carbs, no bread, pasta or rice & low sugar (usually 10g added sugar or less). No highly processed foods. No fast food & very rarely takeaway (maybe 5 times in almost three years - braised chicken, cashews & vegetables or steamed gyoza). I aim for 2 serves of meat, 3 or 4 serves of vegetables, 1 or 2 serves of fruit, 2 or 3 serves of dairy, 2 serves of multi or whole grain carbs. It’s been working for me but your needs & prefernces may be totally different.

OMG - you ladies are killing me! I just made a dull beef veggie soup that hardly compares to any of these golden pocket beauties!!! I'm dying for a bite. I dropped 3 pounds (probably salt and sugar weight) since fasting 2 meals a day since last post. I plan to continue through the weekend.

    Eating too fast maybe?

It could be reactive hypoglycemia, but you said you've checked your blood sugar. It could be a form of dumping (are you eating things that are higher in sugar or fat when this happens?), it could be that you are eating too fast. I would keep track of when this happens and see if you can identify what the common factors are. Also... definitely try to reach out to your doctor.
  25. I had my op October 2021, Doing great, the weight loss is coming off. 5 and a half stone so far, I feel so much better and able to move more, I am happier thats for sure! However I do have a question......Just recently when I eat, straight after I get all hot, sweaty and shaky and have palpitations almost like a diabetic Hypo(low blood sugar) . However I checked my blood sugar, and it is normal. Am I eating too fast? I have no other symptoms. This is just weird!!! Love & Light
