I'm wondering if there is any sort of 'rule of thumb' with stalling or not. How far out were you if you experienced a stall in weight loss? Are lower BMI's more likely to experience onw that higher BMIs??

You are a lot like me. But apart of the reason we gain weight is due to NOT EATING. You will hear it sd over and over this WLS not brain surgey. Eating is very important

It is very hard to do but PUT AWAY THE SCALES! At least for a few days. Then, what I've learned is that (if you're really sticking to the low-cal program) your body has begun to hang on to every calorie because it thinks it's starving. That is quite common. Honestly this sounds counterintuitive but eat more calories for a couple of days. I promise you it will tell your body that you aren't starving it and your body will then allow you to realize a weight loss again. It is really how it works. The other way to do it, if you don't trust what I'm telling you, is to increase your exercise by a lot. But when you're eating very little and your body is hanging onto everything you eat, it's in starvation mode. If you increase your exercise (which will work for seeing a loss) but you aren't taking in enough Protein, it can be very hard on your muscles, including your heart. I'm no medical professional so go ask the medical pros in your life. If they say I'm wrong, then it's because they haven't had enough experience to understand the phenomenon.

I am out 25 days. I was down 17 lbs but gained back 3lbs in the last two days. Go figure, the last two days I actually started jogging again (2.5 miles) and I gain weight. Oh well, I'm sure it won't last:confused1:

who was sleeved Monday Feb 3rd? I want updates!
beme2013 replied to gohelpyourself's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sleeved on 2/4 and feeling really good. I have a hematoma above my large incision causing pain but otherwise good.No nausea or vomiting, sipping well. I am not hungry at all! I've been staying with my parents the last few days and they've been eating hoagies cheesesteaks, donoughts, etc and I'm not even interested. I haven't had a bowl movement but am passing gas. I'm down 16 lbs since I started my 3 day pre-diet on 2/1. I'm 5'9' starting weight was 252. This week is Clear liquids for me , so I've been drinking Propel, Water, tea with honey, Jello, and broth. I'm drinking The Original Protein XL shot 28 grams. It's really good. Next week will be full liquids like pudding, yogurt, Protein shakes, etc. I'm really excited! -
At my first appointment I met with the surgeon and he discussed the differences between lap band, sleeve, rny and we decided on the type I wanted...they also took vitals and weight and the doctor did a short exam. Then I met with the insurance coordinator who went through my insurance requirements. My insurance required 12 months of visits with the nut. A week later I saw the nut and saw her once a month for 12 months. During that I also had my 2 mental health evaluations. At my last appt they gave me a date and sent everything to my insurance.

The important thing to remember is this is a lifestyle change that will get better over time aND before you know it the weight will be dropping because we will be consuming food and nutrients and protein aND we'll feel great about it!! Newbie: sleeved on June 20th! So much fear already!
KristenLe replied to Mjohnson4631's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@Mjohnson4631 We all have that fear of failing. Don't worry - you will lose weight. Many actually gain weight immediately after surgery from the fluids, stress of surgery, and swelling. Just stay with your plan and ignore the scale right now! Congrats on your pre-op loss - you're off to a great start! -
New to Group- have so many questions
KansasDelta replied to saltykisses's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome! I think it may vary by insurance. I know mine (SmartHealth) actually wouldn't approve you as is since your BMI is "too low". They require a BMI of 35 with co-morbidities, or 40 or higher for no-cormobidities. I would recommend calling your insurance company directly to see what all they require. I wasn't required to have any medically-supervised weight loss, but there were several people in my class who had to do 3-6 months. Good luck! -
Hello, I am new to this, but I am glad I found this group. A little about myself, I have been struggling with my weight since high school. I am 36 years old I have 3 beautiful girls, ages 19,12 and 20 months old. My breaking point happened when I became pregnant (birth control failed) I was already unhealthy and having several issues. My worse nightmare came true, my health issues made me go into early labor, my daughter was born at six months weighing 1lb 11oz. She is my miracle baby and is doing wonderful I have truly been blessed????. After seeing my baby fight for her life in the NICU the guilt kicked in and has not left me I blame myself for putting her through so much. Since then I have gained more weight and been on so many diets, I recently found out my insurance will cover weight loss surgery, but I needed to complete 3 months of different appointments. Well next week I have 2 appointments left and then they can send everything to my insurance. I really hope I get approved, I want to live and see my gets grow. I really haven't told anybody but my close family because the one so call friend of mine thinks that I am taking the easy way out. I have done my research and know that this is nothing easy. With that being said I have kept to myself a lot lately. I do not talk to anybody but my family. I am nervous but I know I need this. I need a change in my life. I am so ready wish I could have the surgery tomorrow lol.

Newbie waiting on approval
Fatdiva14 replied to 619Raf's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome. I totally agree with everyone, even though I haven't gotten the "easy way out" mantra thrown at me. However I sometimes criticize myself for not being able to loose weight the ""normal" way. Giving my son a life with a healthy mother is what I've decided to choose and I think my turning point was when my weight continued to tip the scale and several health issues began to stack against me. Two years ago when I found out I had hypertension should have been the wake up call, but with sleep apnea and diabetes side by side, the wake up call became a bullhorn tearing out my eardrums. So here I am, proud and ready that I've made the decision to become healthy for me and no one else...so I guess that is the easy way out for me, and the hard part will follow ! -
yes thank god im able to eat puree foods but im just having trouble on what to eat. i think what has helped me a lot is that im making sure im getting in 10,000 steps daily no matter what that helped with the gas situation as well as the losing weight

Questions for people 5+ years post-op
B-52 replied to ilikecake2much's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm not 5 years, but over 4.... Restrictive??? Diet??? those are 2 words I do not use. How about "New Lifestyle"? I have had lap band surgery,,,yes it restricts the amount of food, portion sizes, I can eat.....does it bother me? No, because it also took care of my hunger, and my tastes have changed to where a lot of things...MANY things, do not appeal to me anymore. I have no desire, no cravings. Also, the Lap band has made certain foods difficult to eat, so i gave them up entirely rather than gamble....looking back, all the foods, or most, where not that good for me in the first place. And if I was on a diet they would be "Red Flag" foods like cakes, breads, rice, etc, etc. Over 4 years later, I take a day like any other day...perfectly normal, don't even think about the fact I had weight loss surgery....all those lessons I learned early on have now become not just a habit, but it is who I am and what I do instinctively Sure, every now and then I will drink Water too fast, or swallow something too large or too quickly...but it is nothing more than a little reminder....not the sky is falling!! You may read many posts from people who are struggling...but if you can read between the lines you can see why they are struggling..."Have not seen their Dr in over a year" for one example.....and the majority of them are from people who are new to this... Granted, there are legitimate unavoidable problems with this surgery, some dangerous....just as there is with anything in life. But I am at a "Normal" weight, in excellent health ( was not always so) and I have more self-esteem, motivation, and energy than I ever have.... Would I trade this off??? Not a chance!!! -
Peptic duodenitis & history of stomach ulcers?
MariaC6 replied to MariaC6's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi JRT Mom, my first set of ulcers were related to H Pylori. This time around they tested for H Pylori but it was negative. I don’t use a lot of NSAIDS so I’m not really sure what the culprit is. I had my gallbladder removed shortly after I was told I had Ulcers in 2011 (sludge). The MRICP revealed no pancreatic or duct complications but it did reveal I have Hepatic Steatosis (non alcoholic fatty liver disease). In 43 and so finding this out was a shock & that is why I have really decided I need to do something about my weight. I’ve already been told my cholesterol was high and was diagnosed with Hashimotos Hypothyroid about 2 years ago. I will definitely make an appointment with my gastroenterologist to discuss bariatric surgery and to get his input. -

Its Offical Im In A Stall
SpecialK1960 replied to 2ndtimesacharm's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Try not weighing everyday. It is sort of like the watched pot that never boils. And do not underestimate the weight you are carrying as a result of 4 days with no BM. As much as you are excercising you should hopefully stay pretty regular. I would not go much longer before taking something that might get you "moving again." Good luck and remember often after a plateau there is a big drop that has been hiding for a while. -
Hello my name is Lorrie and have just found out about the gastric sleeve Fri. by my Dr. so reading all I can about it before going to 1st meeting. My sister had a gastric bypass many years ago and after watching what she went through I never wanted any thing to do with weight loss surgery. I now am at a point in my life that I want be healthier to enjoy life!
-
I announced on Facebook today that I am planning on having gastric bypass. I am an honest person, and transparent as far as my thoughts and feelings, so I wanted everyone to know what was happening before I started losing massive amounts of weight. Everyone has been very supportive in their responses thus far but it has left me feeling exposed and vulnerable. Bring on the anxiety. On a positive note, I've lost 2 more pounds and have gone down 2 pant sizes since starting this journey. [emoji1373]

havent lost in 2 1/2 months 10 months post op
GradyCat replied to cheesy_and_vsg's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
A couple of thoughts pop into my head. One is you may actually be at your set weight. Was your goal realistic? Do you feel healthy and happy at the weight you're at? The second thought is that you said you follow what your nutritionist recommended on "most" days. While we can't be perfect, what are you doing on the other days? Sometimes, believe it or not, we are getting too FEW calories that is keeping us from losing weight. I know that sounds counterintuitive, but it happens. Is your weight lifting adding muscle weight so that even though you're losing inches and re-shaping, the scale isn't reflecting it? Keep in mind that the scale is only one measurement tool. Have you been tracking your inches lost and shape? By the way, you look GREAT! Good luck with your continued WLS journey. -
I just started resistance training with 3 lb barbells. Strengthening your arms will help fill in upper arms some. You won't bulk up like weight lifter. Some great YouTube videos on upper arm strength training. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Just curious, why did you get denied? Is it because of your weight? I am just curious cause I am 5'4" and weigh 249 and have 1 comorbity. I am hoping I weigh enough. I guess I will find out next week...... Jennifer

My surgery is in the morning :) 12/31/12.
Instyle98 replied to DisplayName's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Of course it's okay to sleep. While laying around in bed all of the time is not good, you do need rest in order to heal. The pain medication should also help you sleep. It certainly makes me sleepy. I don't normally sleep for long periods of time anyway, but if I'm tired and need to lay down for a nap, I do. I just make sure when I'm up I stay on my feet for a while, moving around. I'm sure you've read this all over the forum, but while you don't want to gain a bunch of weight while you're healing, don't be surprised if you lose very little or none at all. Your body is trying to heal itself, plus you need protein to heal. You will experience swelling, bloating, etc. But that should resolve itself once you have healed. I forgot to mention that my surgeon gives a Scopolamine Patch prior to going to the O.R. to help with nausea too. I don't know if all surgeons do this, but it does seem to help with that. They pretty much covered all of their bases with preventative measures before and during surgery. You can do this and remember the pain and discomfort is only temporary. -
I Can't Stop Cleaning!!
Suziecat replied to Shelleymb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, it is like having a baby. And how well you take care of that baby will dictate your weight loss. Your baby is the tool. Good Luck and if you want more to clean, my door is always open. -
Thus far, I have been to the 3 hour seminar by the surgeon where he outlined everything and answered questions. He said he only does a sleeve for patients with a BMI over 60. I am only a 39.4, but my family physician is driving hard for the sleeve because with the roux en Y I can't take my time release medications that I need. So she called his office and they are going to leave it up to the insurance company to make the call. The insurance just took out their regulation for a 6 month doctor supervised diet because they realize at this point its a waste of time. So now I have to have 2 appt. with a psychologist and 2 with their dietitian. Those appointments are booked for September. Then I also have to have 2 months with the CPAP machine for sleep apnea which I didn't know I had. Turns out the doctor read the results wrong when I had the test done 3 years ago and told me it was negative. Now she's really embarrassed and is worked extra hard to help me get this pushed through. The other link to success in this is support at home and I definitely have that. I used to have a husband who would run out to the store and buy pies, chips, chocolate, etc. everytime I would announce, "I've just lost 7 lbs." He constantly sabotaged me. My new husband listens to me and goes out of his way to find the things I need and see that I have them. He comes to all appointments with me that he can get off work for and takes a real interest in my health care. I also have chronic fatigue syndrome and with the excess weight there are a lot of things I can't do for myself and he so selflessly takes care of me. I know I can count on him for this. I am reading a lot and trying to prepare myself as much as possible ahead of time for the surgery, even though it's still probably about 3 months away. I'm practicing making my meals last for 30 minutes. I'm practicing not drinking with meals, and watching the clock before and after meals so I don't take liquids in. I'm starting to eat with the baby utensils so I adapt to the small bites. I'm practicing chewing 40 times per bite. I'm trying to find out things I can prepare in advance so I'm ready when I come home from the hospital. I'm open to advice and ideas and getting to know the people here.
