1. I have a friend that has been banded for over 2 years. She is at her goal weight, her cholesterol and blood pressure are perfect and she has no health problems. She inquired about increasing the amount of her life ins policy and was told that the cost was approx. double now that she was banded! :bolt: Anyone had this experience or heard of this? We can't figure out how this could possibly be true and if it is really a common occurrence. Thanks for any feedback you might have.

Gaining...help

Hi there i haven't had the surgery yet i been told by others who had RNY that when you start seeing the weight gain to get back to basics. High protein low carb and water should help keep hunger away long enough to keep the snacking at bay
3. If anyone has had Tricare (North Region) can you please help me. I am totally confused. I understand that I would not need to have a medical supervised weight loss before surgery if I can document that I have done so in the past. My insurance person at my health facility is telling me that it is a requirement for Tricare. I am stressed as I am just starting this process and I really need your advice. Thanks. NO FoxyMomMa Yet
4. Suzette, thanks so much for that tip. i am just super frustrated because this info isn't just info to me and i want my old doctor to realize that this information is crucial to me being able to start the 6 month weight watch with the doctors so i can be able to put in for WLS. its not just a number on a page...this is a part of a new chapter of my life. I'm just frustrated, but I'm going to try something similar to what you said tomorrow and see if I can get this info started. I would like to show up to my surgical initial meeting with all the paperwork in tow and not be waiting for my 5 year weight history. Thanks for the support, Melissa

Evil birth control pill

The link that I posted says something about the old school BC's and weight gain. I wish I could go on Mirena (it's an implant that goes up in your biz, Katy) but I haven't had any babies. My OB won't put it in, something about the cervix not being dilated before. So, I'm on the Nuva ring which is low dose too.
6. Maybe this has been asked before and if so, I apologize in advance, but once you begin taking the bc pill all over again, will it normally make you pack on some weight? I have been on the pill for over 12 years and I had stopped taking it right before the surgery (mainly out of fear of being able to swallow it with being swollen right after surgery) and then waited until 2 days ago to start up a new pack again. So, basically, I only missed one month. Well, my weight loss was slow but steady. I have been eating right, i.e. more Protein than anything, keeping calories low, walking on my treadmill, no fills yet - but I am dieting like a normal person to keep the weight off. And then out of nowhere I gained like 3 lbs back. I am wondering if the pill has done this. I am told to stay on it for PCOS reasons. But I just hate to see hard work unraveled!
7. Thanks everyone!! I am VERY happy with my weight loss thus far but I just want to keep going!! hehe Protein I'm good to go, my average is 80g a day! This week I am going to work on my water intake because I know I'm no where near 64oz a day! I also plan to start mixing up my workouts to doing a 5K MWF and something else on TTH! I just hope I can work out the rest of this week as we are supposed to have another winter storm BOO! LOL
8. My first stall, and I say it that way because I'm sure there will be others, came at three months after surgery. It lasted almost four weeks, which with my initial amazing weight loss, was frustrating. I came to terms with reality during the first week of the stall, and for me, the reality was, and continues to be, that there is no way this plateau can have a long lasting affect because I'm still obese and I am eating 600-1000 calories per day. Knowing that it couldn't be sustainable, I kept doing what I was doing, diet and exercise, and maintained discipline. Lo and behold, the stall broke and I dropped ten pounds in a week. Keep the faith and don't worry, everyone's body adjusts differently, just know that it can last a short or long time, that doesn't matter. What is most important is building new habits that are sustainable for the rest of your lifetime. Congratulations on your weight loss to date!
9. I saw my family Dr.; told him what I wanted; he gave me a 1500 calorie exchange diet sheet (on which I promptly gained weight); went back 30 days later and checked in; went back in another 30 days and checked in, went back for a final 30 day check-up and he sent my records to my surgeon's office to submit to insurance. So - saw Dr ------>30 days pass, saw Dr.------> 30 more days pass, saw Dr----->30 more days pass, saw Dr.; he submitted to my surgeon. Does that help?

Just got my packet from the hospital! There's is so many things I need to do and fill out! I'm just so overwhelmed and feel like if I make one mistake on the packet I will be denied because I'm barely matching all the criteria they need for the WLS HELP!!! I've been on a medical weight loss through my PCP I'm 205, 5'3 with only one comorbity
11. This week, I have been complimented like crazy about how I have lost weight!! All of a sudden, BAM!! Everyone is saying something to me. It feels pretty good. However, I was not prepared for the compliments,. People are asking me what I am doing, and it never occurred to me to have an answer. I guess it is a like a dream come true that you are not ready for. I just tell people I cut carbs and eat very differently. But if feels good and is great incentive for me!!
12. So, I have completed my insurance required 6 months of weight monitoring and nutritional counseling, done all of my pre-op testing, both that the insurance requires and my surgeon requires. All of my paperwork was submitted on Oct. 5th.....and today I find out that my bariatric nurse (THE one person who decides if it is approved or not) is going on vacation all next week. So please God, grant me patience, because heaven knows I need it. My surgeon's office won't give me a "date" until I'm approved (can't say I blame them) but it is literally driving me nuts that I CANNOT place a surgery date on my calendar and PLAN MY LIFE AROUND IT. AAAARGH! Oh, and I guess the insurance gives the nurses 15 days to approve/deny...so it's not like it's out of the "norm" as far as how long they can take to decide. At least my bariatric coordinator from my insurance company was SO nice today when she told me that the nurse would be on vaca all next week. I know this is small price to pay for going through insurance vs. self-pay, but someday I wish I was a self-pay patient just so I didn't have to jump through so many freakin hoops! (Oh and just for the record, I will be paying $$$$ some big money for this surgery, I pay $5K out of pocket and then 10% of whatever is left over after the $5K is paid.) I just wish that I could have a date....SO FRUSTRATING!!!

Who is observing Lent?

I know I'm a day late on this, but I haven't come up with what I am giving up for Lent this year. We had a sermon a few years ago about how Lent is not a diet plan, it's not meant to be a second chance at re-starting a New Year's resolution. That sort of kicked me right in the guilt-button, because I had given up sugar before and the whole focus ended up being how great I felt and how much weight I had lost. Not the point of Lent. So all you Anglicans/Catholics, tell me what you chose and why!

Bcbs Of Nm- Preapproved?

Thank you for filling me in. So what test did you have to do with your PCP? Were you able to schedule your nut/psy eval fairly quickly? Did you have to do supervised weight loss or was history and health enough? I will contact them after the holiday and if you dont mind sharing what your bcbs policy required that would be very helpful..
15. Go figure. It's exhausting to keep up with all of this. Being my own human guinnie pig, I have taken it down to an austere 600 calories, just barely getting my Protein in, carbs under 30, no salt...you know...all of that, and today on the scale I have gained 2 pounds overnight! I about cried. I certainly did not eat 7,000 excess calories, so it had to Water and/or poo, but I am not constipated at all. It's hard being my own hall monitor, but I volunteered for this. So, if you gained 3 pounds, you know you did not consume 12,500 excess calories. keep you head up and stay on your program.

Fill Dr in Houston TX?

My friend's surgeon agreed to do my fills and he's charging less than the fills centers and another dr wanted to charge me for the first visit. I have to pay $150 for each visit/adjustment and the fill center wanted to charge me $350 for the first visit and $160 for every visit/adjustment after that. Bariatric Surgery Treatment | Gastric bypass surgery | Lap Band Surgery Houston, Texas | Sleeve Gastrectomy Texas I got 1 cc and he made me drink a bottle of Water before I left to make sure it wasn't too tight. After about 4 sips I had to go throw that water up and he had to take half my fill back out again so I have only .5 cc's in right now. I was really adamant before I got there that I was gonna push for at least 3 cc's to start with and thought it was pretty funny that 1 cc was too tight LOL I think I've been able to eat so much because I've been drinking with my meals and I thought the only reason why you're not supposed to is because it might be painful BUT he told me today that drinking with meals actually makes the food mushy so it doesn't stay in the little pouch as long and negates the purpose of the band. I'm glad to know that and I'll stop drinking with meals now and hopefully get back to losing weight!

self pay options

I pursued lap band surgery almost 2 years ago. Jumped through all the hoops, and then 2 weeks before I thought I would be having surgery, insurance sent a letter denying me. Instead of appealing the decision, I let it drop, thinking I could do the weight loss on my own. I have regretted it ever since. I wish I would have appealed it and argued with them til the end. My insurance company stopped covering weight loss surgery as of April 1st, so there is no hope for me to have financial assistance from them now. My only option is to pay out of pocket. Maybe re-fi the house, borrow against the 401K, I don't know. I don't even know what costs estimates are for the surgery. Can people give me a general ideas of costs? I realize it will vary by state but it will give me an idea of what I could be looking at.

You don't need to lose weight...

I really get where you are coming from here... As much as people are trying to be kind and supportive, it is still a tad bit stupid telling someone they look good for the 'sake' of it! At just over 6mths out, I am not even half way, very close, but not quite there... anyways, in work I continue to get lovely comments about how good I look and how healthy I look... Nice! I was speaking to a friend, who is really skinny; tiny, tiny, tiny lady who is also lovely... She commented on me weight loss, calling me the amazing shrinking lady and we both chuckled; I told her that I am frustrated 'cos I haven't hit my half way goal and she said 'Bloody hell Coops, you can't lose another 3+ stone, 'cos you'll have a skinny little body and a massive head!' Well that was a lesson in itself... yea, I can lose it cos there is fat to lose... so the moral of the story... just take the compliment and don't discuss where in the weight loss process I am!!
19. When I stalled for 3 weeks in a row (and each week I did lose but it was so little to me that is a stall) - I started logging my foods religiously, started incorporating more healthy carbs to my diet, and started bumping up my workouts. It worked. I've lost 10 Lbs in the 2 weeks that followed. I haven't lost any since that 10 lbs but it's because of mother nature, which is fine. Enjoy your successes! I honestly think this is the first time in my life that I've gone this amount of time with such consistent weight loss, besides my band where I was losing for the first 5 months. I'm almost there now and I really don't see me changing anything up. Keep in mind too, you will just have to find the winning combo for you as far as diet and exercise. Also, most everyone goes through a stall at 3 weeks out, so you might just need to wait it out. Good luck!

Soooo frustrated!!

So I recently had posted that I had lost weight after being stuck for quite awhile. I was extremely excited but since then I gained 2 pounds. Why does it feel like I'm so close to my goal of 125 but it doesnt seem like I can get there?? I know reaching 140 is a HUGE accomplishment but I want to reach my goal by my 2 year mark April 11. HELP!!!!!! Sent from my iPod touch using LapBandTalk
21.

This is awesome! I called insurance today and initially the lady said gastric bypass is not covered as my husband's employer didn't pick up the rider, but when I asked about lap band she said "Isn't that the same??" Ummmmm...... no! I don't want bypass, I want the lap band. Trying to determine if that means no weight loss surgery at all or just no bypass. I am hoping that if it is nothing at all I can piggyback it on with getting my hiatal hernia taken care of. Heck, they can check for more endo while they're in there too. This gives me hope that I can work something out. For those of you who have done this, did the DR let you pay in installments or was it one big amount?

22. Thanks for offering to send me the letter. I have contacted two of my doctors now and haven't run into any problems w/the process so far. One of my docs, just had a form to fill out on his site. The other I just called and she said I could come in to fill out their form or fax in a signed request. So, looks like getting the info is pretty easy. And, I'm having it all sent to myself just so I know what it is and then we can just send the best weights to insurance. Who would've ever thought my 'best' weights would be the highest ones. Or, that I wish I could be just one inch shorter. LOL

Denied... UHC

Don't give up just yet....if you have an associated co-mobility such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol then you have an argument with your provider. Also pick up the book "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" there is a section on what to do when the insurance company doesn't agree with your physican decision. My BMI was less than your and I was just banded with insurance approval this Monday. I am sore as all get out, but do NOT regret my decision. Good luck.

to all the self pay people

There are a lot less hoops if you self-pay but there are still hoops. I had to do a nutritional consult, a psych eval, an EKG, an Upper GI, a Cardiac Stress Test, labs and a physical. The physical usually includes a PAP and Mammogram but I had them done less than a year ago so they accepted those instead of demanding new ones. What tests you get depends on your pre-op symptoms. I probably didn't really need the Stress Test as it turns out. But no 3, 6 or 12 month diet, no classes, no documentation of 2 - 5 years of weights, no having to submit a list co-morbidities and other documentation of medical necessity, etc. I could have had surgery 2-3 weeks after my first surgical consult if I'd wanted to.
