Post sleeve comfort foods -roll call!

I recently discovered ProYo where I shop. It's a high protein frozen yogurt pushup treat. They're too high in sugar to have every day but they are a great occasional treat.
  2. I went to the Bahamas 4 months after my gastric Bypass and really was not able to eat much at all. For breakfast I had yogurt. Lunch was a problem, I had a couple bites of a salad. Dinner was an issue, I would take a bite of a piece of filet and it tasted so good, I would take another 3 bites, and then had to leave to through up. I was thankful after the first 2 days that I brought me protein bars. But everyone is different. I am 5 months at this point and still can only a limited amount of different foods and very small amounts of food that my stomach will tolerate.
  3. I am 8wks out, and also have trouble with protein tasting funny, I have found the best thing its from Starbucks!! SKINNY GREENTEA FRAP, PLUS PROTIEN,-CLASSIC, +SF VANILLA, NO WHIP, ITS SO GOOD. Especially on warm days, I drink two a day. I am feeling great down 60lbs. Yeahhh, there is a few things that bother my tummy that's eggs, lettuce, and I've tried chicken and that's ehhh iffy sometimes. But I found cottage cheese, lots of yogurt, I just change up the flavors. Just some ideas.

    it's that time

Congratulations!!!!!!!! 156 would be a dream come true for me! Way to go ! Can I ask you what you started your weight with. Also thanks for the advice. I had my first egg this morning with spinach and cheese. Ate two bites chewed and chewed and that was it for me. So my left shoulder starts to hurt every time I eat. I called a specialist on it and they said its normal. It's my body sign your full. Strange right??? Going to have some yogurt for lunch and some Soup for dinner. These days I'm so busy and tired I don't have the time or energy To eat and haven't had a Protein shake in so many days too. Once again a big congrats!!!!!!

    Leaving tomorrow, getting nervous

Tomorrow I'm heading home (WA State) for 11 days. It's been two years since my last visit and have planned to be there over two weekends so that I had time to spend with old friends (who will mostly be working during the week). The more I talk with friends the more concerned and nervous I become about the whole eating thing. Fortunately my husband and I have eaten out quite a bit since surgery, so I am really good about finding nutritious, soft/mushy food (soup, eggs, grilled or broiled seafood), but I started studying the menus and nutrition values at restaurants I knew we frequented while I was pre-op. I will be staying at my grandmother's house, so I plan to head to the grocery store the morning after I get in since tomorrow night I have a friend picking me up from the airport and we're going straight to a barbeque. I think I'll buy some yogurt--I get the diabetic friendly kind--eggs whites, veggie cheese, turkey sausage, chicken breasts, and lactaid milk. I'm going to pack some protein powder to take with me since the only ones I can tolerate are only available by ordering...I think. Another big concern is helping my friends understand what I can and cannot eat. Although they all know about my surgery, I told everyone in my life (and some who weren't) when I first started looking into it, since they are so far away, I haven't really educated them on the ins and outs of my day to day eating. I have one friend that wants to treat me to lunch next week (she's a little depressed because all of her kids are now school aged for the first time). I'm thinking of suggesting visiting some places around town that we used to hang out and ride our bikes to when we were kids. Another two friends want to go to the big fair and in the past the fair has always been a place for me to overindulge in bad foods. She is much more health conscious and although she mentioned wanting to get a scone I know the trip will be more about checking out the booths and stuff. So I should be fine if I can fight the head hunger. I'm thinking about picking ONE treat that I can have and take a few bites. As for packing, I'm really confused on what to bring. Money has been a bit tight since I'm still not really working much and have about a month more off. I've budgeted out a certain amount and don't plan to go over. So normally I would use any vacation as a chance to add to my wardrobe (when I was a size 16 or below, larger than that and shopping was just not appealing), this time I really need to bring enough to get me by. I know all of these things will work out, but I'm just having last minute worries. I've been pretty fortunate since surgery in that I've been in a pretty controlled environment most days and able to plan ahead for the most part. With this trip, I kind of feel that I am now officially on training wheels.
  6. Just wanted to let you know that Muscle milk isn't lactose free. As per their website. http://www.musclemilk.com/learn/ DO MUSCLE MILK® PRODUCTS CONTAIN MILK OR DAIRY? The term “dairy” on a food product, pertains to foods such as milk, cream, half and half, yogurt, ice cream, and custards. Since dairy is a regulated term, to qualify as a dairy product you need to contain fluid “milk” or certain “dairy” ingredients conforming to the federal standard of identity for “milk“ or “dairy”. Key Points: MUSCLE MILK® Ready to Drink Protein Shakes are derived from milk (calcium caseinate, sodium caseinate, milk protein isolate, milk protein concentrate and/or whey protein concentrate, depending on product.) Since these ingredients are more refined than milk, (reduced lactose, cholesterol and fat content), it is not the same thing as milk. So technically speaking, MUSCLE MILK® Protein Shakes are ‘non-dairy’ and are labeled on the bottle as such. An example of another ‘non-dairy’ product derived from milk ingredients is non-dairy creamers. MUSCLE MILK® Ready to Drink Protein Shakes do contain milk proteins and therefore should not be consumed by persons with milk allergies. MUSCLE MILK® Smoothie Yogurt Protein Shakes do contain milk in the form of Greek-style yogurt and added whey protein concentrate. MUSCLE MILK® Protein Powders, similar to Ready to Drink Shakes do contain proteins derived from milk, but in a powdered form. It's important to note that Whey is made from Milk, and not all Whey protein is the same. Whey Isolate has a greatly reduced lactose content and that's what makes it easier for those with lactose issues to tolerate, but no Whey is 100% lactose free, since it's derived from Milk.

    Hello from New York

i just had the surgery on friday 4/22 and beforehand i was on a 2 week pre op diet that consisted of oatmeal, raw veggies, yogurt, sugar free pudding, sugar free jello and no sugar added applesauce. I also had to drink 4 protein shakes a day... now i am on a clear liquid diet for a week and then i move onto pureed food, then soft foods, and then finally a regular diet. We too have to use a salad plate make half of it veggies 1/4 of it protein and 1/4 starches. right now i am not hungry at all and haven't been since the surgery but the pain where the port is is very tender. i am able to get up on my own but can't bend over or lift anything for awhile. I am also only taking a week off of work but the surgeon said that you could potentially have the surgery on friday and go back to work on monday. I live in NJ and if you want the name of my surgeon just let me know they are awesome

    Insurance problems

my dietician didn't put me on a diet yet. She set goals for me like walking a mile every other day and to stop drinking caffeinated tea (I don't drink coffee or energy drinks) and to start working on yogurt or cottage cheese for breakfast. Basically she takes things slow and wants to work on habits. Every dietician is different though

    TMI alert!

The antibiotics are enough to give you one. Eating yogurt will help. As well as plenty of OTC medicines. Even if you still have it when you go for surgery it won't stop it. Although I would try my hardest to get rid of it before surgery....would hate to deal with pain and itchiness down there too!
  10. To be honest, I probably should be eating more as well, esp with the running that i do. But here is a pretty typical day Breakfast: Dunkin Donuts Iced Caramel Latte Lite (it is my one indulgence that I will probably never give up. Only 80 calories though and 11g of carbs) Hard boiled egg OR light string cheese Lunch: Scoop of chicken salad made with light miracle whip and some lettuce, OR, a grilled chicken salad w light dressing (I eat all the chicken and just a few bites of the lettuce if I still have room Snack: Light n Fit Greek Yogurt Dinner: Grilled shrimp & broccoli in lite soy sauce OR Fish OR chicken breast
  11. I got unjury Protein Powder that was unflavored. Another thing is to add silken tofu. It blends up and you can't taste it and it is thin enough to eat. I am going to paste some soup recipes that I have used that might give you some heartiness. It sounds like you can have thick liquids if you are eating yogurt. You may need to strain or blend the crap out of these to fit the level of thickness you can have. Soup recipes Roasted Tomato with Roasted Garlic This recipe yielded about 1 cup. Ingredients: ½ container of grape tomatoes 4-6 cloves of garlic (depends on size and strength of garlic desired) 4 oz of silken tofu 2 TBSP of fresh basil (2-3 tsp of dried basil) Salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1. Peal the garlic and wrap in a small piece of aluminum foil. 2. Place the tomatoes on a cookie sheet and spray with PAM, sprinkle with salt and pepper. 3. Put the tomatoes and garlic in a 350 degree oven until done. a. Tomatoes will burst and shrivel a bit b. Garlic will be soft and mash easily with a fork c. Tomatoes will probably finish before the garlic 4. Place the tomatoes and garlic in a food processor (or blender) 5. Add the tofu and blend until almost smooth. 6. Heat through and add the finely chopped basil at the end. 7. Simmer for a few minutes to let the flavors blend. 8. If necessary thin out with FF evaporated milk. Grilled Asparagus Soup Ingredients: ¼ pound or more of asparagus 2-3 cloves of garlic (depends on size and strength of garlic desired) 4 oz of silken tofu ¼ small onion (more or less depending on taste) ¼ -1/3 cup of LF shredded cheese. Salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1. Either boil grill on BBQ (much better!) the asparagus until just undercooked. a. To grill on BBQ spray with PAM and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in aluminum foil if you do not have a flat grill on BBQ. 2. Sautee garlic, onions and cooked asparagus 3. Place veggies in a food processor (or blender) 4. Add the tofu and blend until smooth. 5. Add FF evaporated milk until correct texture. 6. Heat to desired temperature Sautéed Mushroom and Tuna Soup (This was my way of eating tuna noodle casserole…soup style!) Ingredients: ½ pound or more of mushrooms (any kind will work) 2-3 cloves of garlic (depends on size and strength of garlic desired) 4 oz of silken tofu or white Beans ¼ small onion (more or less depending on taste) 1 can of tuna fish Salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1. Sautee mushrooms, garlic and onions until desired texture. 2. Add to food processor or blender. 3. Add 4oz of silken tofu or ½ can of white beans (depending on your taste!) 4. Add drained tuna fish (or any other canned fish) 5. Puree to desired texture. 6. Heat and add FF evaporated milk to thin if needed So as you can see, the base for these soups is pretty much the same. If you don’t like tofu I would assume that white canned beans would work just as well. Experiment with different spices, add a little parmesan cheese, or different veggies. Right now you shouldn’t be worrying as much about calories, but rather about healing. If you would like add meat to any of these it would work just fine. Ground chicken, hamburger, and ground turkey all pulverize very well. You will most likely just have to thin it out with the FF evaporated milk. That one ingredient has changed my way of cooking. Once you graduate to real foods you can have chicken Alfredo for VERY few calories by using this one ingredient. Another soup that has good flavor is to just take some refried beans and beef stock. It has a lot of flavor and a lot of protein to keep you fuller longer. Also take some spaghetti sauce and add some pulverized veggies to it and it makes it better. Adding some pureed white beans also helps it feel like more food.

    Pre-op Diet & Cheating!

My surgery will be on August 29th. Original date was 22nd but it had to be delayed a week. I was required to do a 3 week liquid diet. This includes protein shakes, plain yogurt, quark, and soups. All has to be puréed and low fat low carb. Because of the delay, I'm starting my 4th week today. For me, it hasn't been so bad because I can get fairly creative with soups. I've lost 14 ponds so far.

    Feeling Horrible

Are you on Clear Liquids or full liquids? I'm post-op and still on full-liquids. I really wanted savory today. You can do Soups (or broth). I had some Thai Tom Yum Kha Soup broth for my dinner. For Breakfast and lunch I made a concoction of cream of wheat, plain Greek yogurt, and a pinch of dill and seasoned salt. It reminded me of Tzatziki sauce, and hit the spot. Feeling Horrible

Honestly, the liquid diet is agony. There is no way around it. I cheated 3 times, and I will not do it again. And on full meals, not just a little something to tide me over. We are addicts, and our bodies are purging carbs/sugars/caffeine and whatever else is in our diets. Headaches and lethargy seem to be par for the course. The first few days were the worst by far, and I found that after I ate real food I was back at square one. So, if you stick to the diet it will get better. I am begrudgingly on day 5, one week to go. I do miso broth for lunch, or get bone broths that I season with a little Worcestershire or spicy seasonings, lime, lemon, you name it. Anything to make it more bearable. You can also get unflavored Protein to add to soups if you prefer. I have no experience with them, but a lot of folks including my surgeon has recommended them. My diet does not include yogurt, cream of wheat, meat, veggies or any food other than Protein shakes and clear liquids. Blows. Its suckiness is unavoidable but YOU CAN DO IT. Just power through. Get your warrior swag on and swallow those shakes! If they are truly unbearable talk to your nut. I also use almond extract, cinnamon, and vanilla extract to make them more palletable. I even used pumpkin pie spice in a vanilla shake and it was pretty darn good. Also Thom Kha and Thom Yum thai soup broths are indeed mighty tasty - but steer clear of Tom Kha, it is made with coconut milk which is very high in fat/calories.
  15. thanks you guys. i went and got an unfill yesterday because if it weren't for liquid calories i was only averaging 200 calories in solid food, and it wasn't healthy stuff, it was just what i could get down. since my unfill i have had roast (omg that was sooooooooooooo good), fruit and yogurt parfait (again..awesome), and cheesy bread..i know bad..i was picking it up for kid and babysitter, and was eating on the run. the doctor that saw me yesterday was upset that i did not come in sooner. he said that my eating habits were not acceptable period. he said i needed to be eating at least 1500 calories a day and eating fruits, veggies, etc. he took out 2 cc's. the anxiety of eating is gone. i can eat a decent amount now, without eating a ton. i felt full for the first time last night since my last fill. that was comforting..made me sleepy. and i ate normal portion sizes, deck of cards for the meat, 1 small piece of a potato, 1/4 cup green Beans. i have read in several places that ketones can cause severe mental retardation or low iq's in babies. i had ketones in my urine at my last doc appointment, so now i'm just trying to make sure to get myself out of ketosis.

    Hardly eating

Ok first off congratulations on your surgery! I had the runs for a bit too. It got a bit better once solids came into the picture. I was lactose intolerant before surgery and its not any better but what i found that helped was leaving it out. I can still consume small amounts but I'll still get sick if i consume small amounts over several days. It builds up into this huge horrible bathroom nightmare. Or LITERALLY one Greek yogurt will send me spiraling into horrible cramps and diarrea. Any time that happened i knew id have to lay off the dairy. I substituted with soy or almond milk. I'd get unsweetened soy milk. It has 7g of protein per 8oz i believe. Almond milk tastes a bit better but only has 1g for the same amount. I'd heard of nut milks with 10g of protein but i haven't looked for them. Also try a vegan protein powder. I think Unjury is vegan? Correct me if I'm wrong. I had the chocolate one given to me and it was like drinking a chocolate yoohoo. Definitely leave the dairy alone. Ive been doing fine on almost none. Give your body a few days to come around. If your THAT lactose intolerant it'll take a few days maybe for your system to get back to normal (i only say that cause any time things like you explained happened to me, it was from dairy and took about a good week or 2 for me to feel normal again). But it'll only happen if you eliminate the dairy. I am only speaking from experience. But also check in with your surgeon. It sounds like your having a rough time. I feel for you hon. I hope things get better soon. Had my surgery on 8-30-07 in Mexico

I have moved on from Phase I and have added creamy soups, liquid yogurt, and protein shakes. I felt to unhealthy to do all clear liquids. I am still breastfeeding my son and have notice a HUGE decrease in milk supply so I decided today that I must add on the protein shakes. My doc said okay to add the yogurt and soups on day 4 if I was doing really well on all clears. They said not to start my Atkins shakes (protein shakes) until day 7. I am going against there advice because I really feel this is what's best for my son right now.

    2 weeks Post-op

you say soft but I'm assuming you meant like mushy, pureed. I'm only a month out but I ate so much greek yogurt I refuse to touch it anymore.. Try cottage cheese and egg salad and chicken salad. I ate a lot of that during my week of all that. I still eat cottage cheese. I love it. You didn't make a mistake. it will pay off. Being emotional is part of it though. If you think you are emotional now wait til you hit a stall. I stalled after my first week. I think I'm still in a stall but I refuse to weigh because it caused me too much anxiety.
  19. I keep burping.... I was at a Christmasparty last night and had to keep apolgizing.. luckyly the people there were church friends and very understanding. I have had an egg... yogurt and some shredded cheese, cottage cheese, and just had some chicken with melted cheese on it.... tastes great and so far going down very well *knocking on wood*
  20. I can't believe some of what you're all eating! I'm so jealous! For 16 days post-op I'm on full liquids only - skim plus milk, light 'n fit yogurt, strained creamed soups and protein shakes - that's it!!! Potatoes and veggies would be heaven!
  21. 100lbsforsale

Day 5 post op, what are/were you eating?

You guys banded after me (17th) are already eating eggs? OOOOHHHH, I'm so jealous!! I'm on semi-liquid until the 31st, then can progress to pureed. Although I was cleared for semi-liquid the day after surgery I had to go back to clear liquid until Sunday before I could eat anything without nausea. I'm cautiously doing mashed potatoes, creamy chicken soup, a little yogurt. I tried gravy on the taters today, made me really sick. I'm not hungry yet so I don't mind, but I am getting tired of potatoes. My 3 year old is helping me with them everytime I make them so its kind of fun to eat with her. I am DREAMING of eating actual MEAT. I've been adding Beneprotein to the soup but the smell of it almost makes me gag. Fortunately I've got a great tasty protein drink with 46g of protein so 2 of those a day and I'm ok with the protein requirement.

    Make your own Protein Shakes

I add unflavored Protein powder to soups and broths and chili. You have to be careful to temper the protein when you do this so it doesn't get all clumpy and gross. To do this, you first mix it with cool to tepid Water to form a paste. Then, you very slowly stir in the heated liquid. You can't reheat, or the protein denatures (gets clumpy)---so you have to do this in single servings. I also add unflavored protein to yogurt and fat-free cottage cheese to bump up the protein. My favorite way to use it, currently, is to mix it with warm almond milk, good-quality vanilla extract (Nielsen-Massey or Penzey's), and a bit of Splenda. I really, really like this. I also use it in other smoothies---I like to blend together Protein Powder, kefir (kind of like pourable yogurt), inulin Fiber (such as FiberSure--it contains prebiotics that help the Probiotics in the kefir happily populate the intestine), a little Splenda, a little vanilla, about a quarter cup canned pumpkin (not the pie filling, just the plain pumpkin) and a good dash or four of pumpkin pie spice. This is a VERY filling--and really tasty--smoothie that does the trick for me when I really want something dessert-like. Delicious. And pumpkin is so good for you.
  23. Hello Everyone, So just a quick improtu chat...... Sleeved 4/9 S/W 239 C/W 221 Ok let's talk fluids......getting more today than probably ever. I have had the hardest time figuring out what is a full liquid what is a clear liquid and so I went to Jason's Deli and got the small cup of cheddar broccoli Soup on day 5. Was it good nope it was delicious, but that is what made me think it was probably not only too early but also not good for me so I had a total of about 8 teaspoons over 2 days. I went back to walmart got more sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello cups and crystal light packets for my Water and I must say today has been a good day. I did not finish the jello cup, but have been enjoying it and will try it for my nightly snack at around 8:45 pm. For dinner going to try some soup not cream based no cheese just some soup that is mainly broth....boo Reflux......let's just say will be asking doc to call in nexium in the morn. I have tried tums but i have what I have been reading is the vsg version of heartburn constantly whether I eat, drink or do neither. So if you get that chest pain in between your breast bone and it has been confirmed as a gerd condition PLEASE let me know! Incisions.....ok call me cooky but I still have my band aids on! I am scared that if I remove them I am removing my security blannket that ensures all is well. So if you have safely removed all tape and band aids please let me know it is ok. Some get loose in the shower and I act is though they are a wounded soilder I am protecting on the battle field. Starting to feel silly. Activity....drove about 10 miles on day 5 and today day 7 resumed the normal activities of dropping the kids off to daycare and going to the store so business as usual. I can clean the house but too much bending over too far makes my incisions hurt and I still take it easy with my turning. Numbers.....18 pounds gone as of today day 7 aka week 1. Yayyy there is a noticeable difference in appearance and clothes so not complaining but worried that it might be because I was slightly in starvation mode....anywho happy for that tremendous lost and any loss this week will be welcomed, however I realisticly know that not only is it not safe it is not 100% feasible to expect those types of #'s so I would be the overjoyed with 5#'s ecstatic with 9#'s which would be half of what I lost this week! Things I probably should not have done........there are quite a few so I will number them 1. Ate a piece of the individually little snack pieces of low fat cheese ( it was at least 6g of protein) 2. Had a smoothie from burger king (it is supposed to be low in sugar maybe sugar free but it tasted too good) 3. Jason's Deli Cheddar broccoli soup ( nuff said) 4. sucked 3 little cheetos until they were mush ( I really just wanted to test my taste buds ) 5. tried activia yogurt ( it had the fruit pieces that are tiny so while i know i can have the activia and I need it I give this 1 a ?) 6. Tried refried Beans ( not sure about this one either) Ok so I think that is it! I would love to hear from everybody lets share our progress, short comings and achievements all in fun. Oh yeah my ticker is wrong so will create a new one with accurate progress lol

    Breakfast Problems

I TOTALLY know what you mean! First thing in the morning I can barely eat anything....I kinda have gotten myself addicted to smoothies as I can get one on the way to work and sip on it....gives me yogurt and protein anyway! And I have noticed that when the humidity is really high here and it is so stinking hot that I seem tons tighter then, too. Crazy!
  25. CheckYes

    You HAVE to try this!

I'd guess it has about 300 calories, yes? That's not bad although I think 2 tablespoons of splenda seems like a lot of splenda! I think I'd switch to fat free greek yogurt, minimize the splenda and dump the evaporated milk. You could probably throw a scoop of Protein powder in there and double the Protein in it! Does the spinach make it green? I add some spinach in to stuff frequently but sometimes the color just turns me off!
