  1. I was banded back in 2005 and have since had "slippage". I am getting the band replaced along with plication next month. I told everybody about my Lap-band and I sure wish that I had a "do over" about revealing that! Everyone watches what you eat. They will constantly ask you, "are you suppose to eat that". They will question why you couldn't lose weight on your own and not have to rely on an implemented device. They will ask why you haven't lost more weight than you have (even though you have lost "tons"). My opinion......only tell the people that you absolutly trust and love the most.

    how much should you lose?

Weight loss can be slow with bandsters who have a low BMI however I started with a BMI of 33 ( but didnt do a pre op diet). After I was banded I lost 20 lbs in my first post op month. Within 4 months I had lost about 55 lbs. It is the last 15 pounds that are killing me, not the first. Don't worry if you don't lost a lot before being banded. As long as you follow your doctors orders, have a good diet and exercise you will lose your weight. Also don't be discouraged if you weight loss is slow. We all lose differently but get the end result that we are hoping for. You can do this
  3. Hello! I had by pass on the 5th, 18 days ago. I did 7 days post op of just liquids, 7 days purees and now I am on soft food. On the 4th I was 239 and after 1 week after I went down to 226. It was the 12th. Since then I didn't lose a single pound. It is a little depressing also because for me it's difficult to reach 1000 kcal a day as my surgeon told me to do.... I am pretty active and i walk every day: I don't feel like going to the gym doing cardio unless I hit those 1000 calories. Is this normal???
  4. Unless you have some type of medical issue, there are pluses and minuses to each surgery. While lapband is the simplest surgery there is a significant number of persons who have the band slip or have major issues with it which requires another surgery to remove the band. The bypass reroutes digestion, however, is effective for resolving diabetes. The VSG leaves digestion intact and reduces the size of the stomach. VSG has fewer complications overall compared to the bypass. For me, the sleeve was an obvious choice as I ate very healthy foods, however, portion control was my biggest issue. I also am not open to the idea of another surgery. Once is enough! In short, depending on your current health, any of the 3 surgeries could be appropriate. I would suggest you go to some different weight loss seminars and determine what you are comfortable with. Good luck.

    Freaking out about hairloss

I had the sleeve in March 2014 and have lost 62 lbs. I have always had excessively thick hair and it was my best feature. I have lost 2/3 of it in the past month. Everytime I wash my hair it looks like a small rodent has died in my shower. I just saw my doctor last week and all my labs are very good. I get enough Protein, Vitamins, and Water. I did lose weight fast so that may be the problem. I'm going to do the Biotin, Super B Complex, and Acai juice in hopes my hair will grow back.

    Honest

So, now that I'm almost 3 months out and down 37 lbs since surgery, 61 lbs total since i started in April, ppl have started to really notice my weight loss. So many people ask me how I'm doing it, and I hate that I feel so weird being honest that I had weight loss surgery. I always feel like they are judging me. I know I shouldn't care, but it bothers me that I do! Does anyone else feel this way?

    Liquid Diet a Question

The NUT said no liquids. It wasn't until I talked to my surgeon about how to make it through two weeks of liquid diet...that's when he told me to have a grilled chicken breast & veggies on Fri/Sat to help me out. He said I would still lose weight just fine.

    HUNGER question- help!

I wasn’t able to eat much at a month out but every journey is different. Are you hitting your protein goals? Are you losing weight? Drinking enough liquids?
  11. On the bus going to my last Dr. supervised weight loss appointment. Tuesday is my pysch eval (hopefully my Dr. will do it) and then I get to send everything to my Dr. for insurance approval. I'm so excited right now and really hoping everything turns out the way I want it to. Fingers crossed that BCBS Fed approves me. :-)
  12. Magicmuffin i know what you mean about struggling with your weight after the birth of your kids. Good abdominal exercises???

Planks are excellent cause they work the entire core - front, back, chest, and hips/legs. Any kind of core work is a fantastic idea. There are a ton of options. I also really like the mountain climber (if you do look it up - I do a slower, more controlled version, keeping my body in a straight line - don't lift the hips up and curve the back or you negate most core work). If you do decide to go with sit-ups, studies have shown that quicker reps work your abs harder than a slow, controlled movement. :frown: To add...about the underarms. Two very good workouts are either the close-grip bench press or push-ups with the hands closer together. Two options, there - so whether or not you have access to a weight room, you can go either direction.
  14. I hope to God people are still taking Vitamins a year out! That's a lifelong thing. You'd be crazy to stop! You don't suddenly stop needing vitamins and minerals just because you reach your goal weight.... Here's what I take daily. Many of these things I took for years pre-op as well: 2x Bariatric Multivitamin - I use the brand recommended by my nutritionist, Vitaleph. The recommendation is to take 3 per day at different times, but I cut down to two a day one I was confident I was getting a reasonable amount of nutrients from my food. 1x Probiotic - Also recommended by my nutritionist. I take Insync brand. 1000mg Vitamin C - Been taking this for years, but I was told it can also help with skin elasticity as we lose weight. 200mg coq10 - Been taking this for years, as recommended by my PCP, for my carpel tunnel. 1000mg Omega 3 - Been taking this for years because I don't eat fish. 1000iu Vitamin D - Been taking this for years because I live in Rochester, NY where it's cloudy and cold like 90% of the time. 2x Citrical Maximum - Started this post-op at the direction of my nutritionist. Used to take 2x Tums daily, but my nutritionist recommended calcium citrate (Citrical) over Calcium Carbonate (Tums). She also explained that I should take my calcium separate from my Multivitamin, because Iron and calcium compete for absorption. So I take my Calcium at night and my multivitamin in the morning and afternoon. Edit: Forgot to list my 500mcg liquid B12 spray, which I use daily.
  15. I'm for days post-op and I'm still experiencing gas pain. I feel pressure just underneath my breast/top of my torso. It makes it difficult to find a comfortable position to sit/sleep. I've already reached out to my WLS community on Instagram. They recommend: walking, herbal tea, Gas X strips and using a heating pad. I decided to post on this platform to gain anymore suggestions. I know this is part of the process but if there are any methods to alleviate gas pain I would like to try it out. The pain isn't severe enough to call my surgeon. It is most just nagging.

    9hrs. post-op...

Hi, I felt so great the day of surgery...I think it was the anesthesia or the PCA Dilaudid...the first day post-op when I went home I was more sore. But now, 7 days post-op, I feel great and so will you ! All in all, I felt MUCH less pain from this surgery than the back pain I felt when I fell off my deck last December ! Congratulations on starting your new life !! Highest wt 350 Weight on sx date 270 Todays' weight 262 Goal 140

    Hair Loss

The loss you're seeing now is part of a cycle that started with surgery and your initial weight loss. Those hairs went into shock and stopped growing until a few months later they fall out. But the next stage starts right away, which is those hairs start growing again in your scalp. The sucky part is you will lose new shocked hairs due to the rapid weight loss, so your hair will be going through this cycle until your weight stabilizes. There isn't anything you are doing wrong or missing out on to stop it. Get all your Protein and then wait it out. This too shall pass!
  18. Hey Guys, Yesterday I decided that I would treat myself to a small piece of chocolate. I know that sugar is not recommended during the weight loss phase, but I just wanted to see how I would feel about it post surgery and I was confident it wouldn't become a habit. Honestly, it tasted wrong. It was WAY too sweet, artificial tasting, and left me with a sore throat and generally feeling like crap for a couple of hours. So now I've learnt my lesson. I can't believe after only two weeks my taste has changed so much. I have seen that quite a few people here have found that sweet things no longer float their boat. I was wondering why this happens? I'm certainly not complaining, but am just interested.
  19. Ok, so I am 5 days post op and haven't lost anything! I am really getting frustrated! when will the weight start coming off? And why hasn't it already?
  20. You should start dropping weight soon as the swelling and Water retention subside. But also, here's a head's up – at about three weeks out you will stop losing again for 2-3 weeks. Don't freak out - it's normal and expected. After that the weight will start falling off again if you stick to your program. And really work to get your fluids in every day! It's important!!!

    need good scale suggestions

Your scale isn't "off". You aren't supposed to weight yourself repeatedly (or any other object weighing exactly the same) on a home digital scale repeatedly. You have to wait at least five minutes between readings. Even when the display goes off, it's still going. If you don't want to wait five minutes, you could take the battery out, which would reset the scale, but that whole process would probably take you five minutes anyway. Why do you need to weigh yourself three times in a row? Is it OCD? If it's OCD, a scale with a dial would be a much better choice for you. You can hop on and off of one of those 10, 20, 30 times in a row and see the exact same results over and over if you want.

    5K Thread

Anyone else running 5ks? I did my first one on the 16th June and ran/shuffled a 42min 45sec time. My second one was on the 23rd June and I ran a 39min 30 sec. I just did my third this morning - knocking the time down to 38mins and 3 secs - that's a pace of 12:15per mile! 6 months ago I was 315lbs and would be able to walk a few miles, but that would be it. Now I am training most days and down at 248. The "high" I am getting from the running is just incredible - and combined with the lapband, the weight is just falling off. I live in The Woodlands, TX, and there is a 5k race - "Run The Woodlands" on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month - I intend to run as many as I can. They are very non-judgemental and you get a big round of applause when you cross the finish line. My goal is to finish the Houston marathon in January, with a short term goal of the Rocky Raccoon 25k on Nov. 3rd. Anyone else running 5ks? How did you get there with your training? How are your times coming along (only if you want to share)?
  23. I am 5.7 height wise i checked i am someone that can have the surgery. I want this really bad but i have to check if my health care will help with some of the cost or all  I have one doctor that does it in my area. Doctor Fox from Richland WA (tri-citys area) The cost is a lot but my health is more important then any amount of money. And yes i have tried diet. I used to go to the gym a lot, and i could run on the tredmills, and bikes for hours, but no results. I started gaining weight out of high school. I gained about 100lbs since 2006.

Dumping glycogen? / Losing water weight...

That will be very interesting to see if you do have a slight gain. If so, then the water to repair muscle theory is right on. Makes sense....let us know!!
  25. Hi everyone! I hope you experienced bandsters can offer some advice and thoughts on this. I've been holding off on buying new clothes for work believing and hoping that I'd begin to lose weight and 1) I could wear some of my old clothes and 2) I could not throw my money away on clothes that I wouldn't be able to wear in a short time frame (because they would be too big). Anyway I finally gave in today because frankly I feel like I look like I slob at the office all the time and constantly wearing the same things over and over again. I've had one fill so far and haven't lost a single pound (I keep recycling the same 3lbs though). I'm due to go in for another next week but I really have lost faith that #2 will be my lucky number. So I went shopping tonight and found I could fit into clothes 2 sizes smaller than I usually wear. I was so excited I ran home to jump on the scale and was baffled when it read the same thing as it did 2 weeks ago! How is it that I can wear a smaller size but haven't lost a pound? Is my fat moving around or something? Are sizes getting bigger? Also, I'm sort of scared to go to my dr next week given that I haven't lost anything since the last time I was there. Is she going to be mad at me? Ridiculous question perhaps but it still has me concerned. I feel like a loser as it is, I don't want to hear it from my dr too (not that she has ever done anything like that to me) but still concerned. Thanks everyone!!!
