  1. Insurance approval after first appeal. Horrible company and an 18 month medically supervised diet and 10% required weight loss and maintenance of that loss...it's all led me to my sleeve surgery on October 22. It's been so long and such a fight that now it's surreal. Working on all the pre surgical medical stuff now. I'll turn 41 a week after my sleeve. BMI 44, diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea. Never been so excited. Or so scared!

    Gastric bypass

I have had dumping - two different types. Firstly, excess sugar. This is easy to avoid - check labels, don’t push what you can do. 10g added sugars in a serving is my max and I have no desire to see if I can stretch that because I don’t want to go back to eating sweets. Sugar dumping at worst is hideous - sweats, retching, diarrhoea, and feeling awful. I had it twice early on, and never ever want to experience it again. A mild form if I Push the boundaries - sweating, yawning uncontrollably, and feel a bit off. For me overeating is a bit different. Stomach pain but not for 10 or so mins until I stop eating, so I really need to keep an eye on my volume. Easiest when I put my food on my plate. The pain is accompanied by a slight nausea, a bit of hot skin, and fatigue but maybe not yawning. This I have experienced a few times as I sometimes misjudge a food portion size...
  3. Yes, Just the 10 days than I’m coming Home and back to Brazil for the 20 day checkup. So I should take clothes that is currently loose because there won’t be much difference in the first 10 days? I was wondering if I could use jeans for the flight back home but from your response I’m guessing it’s a no
  4. How long will you be gone? Just the 10 days? I stayed local for my surgery and packed very lightly for my overnight hospital stay and my week at home I stayed in loose comfy clothes. The following week I returned to work and still remained in loose clothing because anything "touching" me was an irritant. So for 2 weeks I lived in maxi skirts and dresses. Weight loss is different for everyone, I came home from hospital (30 hrs later) weighing 5 lbs more than when I went in and it took 3 days too lose those 5 # and another 5 to lose 5 more.

    November sleevers here

I wouldn't rely on gaining muscle as much of an indicator on progress. It's incredibly difficult for both men and women to gain muscle (more so for the latter). If a man gained 10 pounds of muscle over a full year while eating at a caloric surplus and working out hardcore he's either incredibly genetically gifted or extremely lucky. As gaining 10 pounds of muscle in a full year is unlikely for most people. Maybe if it's your first year ever working out in your life you could have a combo of luck and beginners gains. So I think for most people if you have a great routine and are consistently working out with proper weights and sets expecting anywhere from 3 to 8 pounds of muscle gain over the course of a full year is more realistic. And if you're losing weight (which makes gaining muscle more challenging) it's likely that you're on the lower end of that spectrum.
  6. Hi, I’m actually from Paraguay and I’m getting my surgery done in Brazil. Any tips on what to pack for the first 10 days? I don’t even know how many sizes I might change and what clothes I will tolerate. I’m also starting to get very nervous PLEASE any tips of any kind are welcome

    October Bypass

Hi. I'm on the 7th day of my 2 week preop liquid diet (surgery Oct. 3rd). The worse part is the headaches. After a few days the hunger goes away. Keep hydrated. Btw, I'm worried about the depression too. I've lost 10 lbs in 1 week on this diet. I'm hoping that after surgery the weight loss keeps me motivated and hopefully helps with that depression. I hope neither one of us experiences that. Good luck with everything. Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

    October Bypass

My gastric bypass is set for 10/8. Started pre-op diet yesterday. Woke up today w/ a headache but other than that, it's not awful. A little nervous about the actual procedure and post-op stuff but I'm confident that I'll get thru...My biggest concern is the post-op depression that I've read about on this forum. TBH, that scares me a lot.
  9. Hello all. Yesterday I started my pre-op diet. Surgery is set for 10/8. I guess this thing is really happening. I'm a little nervous about some things like the anesthesia, post-op diet, stuck food/dumping, loose skin, etc. I find that this forum helps but it also can be a little scary. Until finding my way to this site, I was unaware of the chances of post-op depression from missing food. That does not sound like fun. Regardless, I'm here and going through with it. My main reason is quality of life as I age. I'm 48 and know if I don't lose weight I'll be facing some major health issues as I get older. Thanks for letting me vent. I have faith that it will turn it fine but won't be easy.

    Hungry

Hi Fluffy if you go hunting, one of the most common threads you will find here is “I am x weeks post op and I feel no restriction!” It is REALLY common so do t sweat. I almost convinced myself that my surgeon did no bypass and only cut me open and sewed me up again! It settles. You learn to read it - but it takes learning! The restriction for me generally acts more like “meh, that’s enough eating cos I have better things to do” - more like a disappearing food drive than a physical full/squeeze feeling. If I DO eat too much it shows 10 minutes later - pain, hot sweats and sometimes I fall asleep! So I try and avoid that!! Meanwhile, you are a learner driver for that tummy, so just take it easy, stick to your plan - that is why they gave you a plan! x
  11. Yogurt feels weird to eat... wth??? I have dannon light and fit Greek yogurt in the banana cream flavor. I added 1 scoop of genpro powder to it. Making it 139 calories, 42 grams of protein, 8 grams of sugar and 10 grams of carbs.
  12. Carbs are stressing me out. Why are vegetables so carb loaded!! Ugh!! I can’t afford having 44 carbs, when even with high protein it’s only got 10 grams!! And I can’t eat that much... ugh. Bright side—I was right, my stall broke. I’m finally down to 221.2 this morning. A full lb lower than when my stall started on the 12th... so it lasted almost 2 weeks.

Higher calorie foods for gastric bypass

Avocados, full fat eggs, full fat cheese, pork sausage rather than turkey, 80/20 ground beef, butter. You do have to be careful with adding TOO much fat at one time, but you should be able to eat enough with a mixed meal in order to get enough fats to up your calories. Then there's the whole grain and starch thing. And IF you're trying to gain weight the fastest way to do that is to add fat to carbs, BUT it goes to the wrong place. Honestly if it was me, I'd go search out not only what foods you can eat as an RNY, but look at programs designed for males who are trying to add lean muscle. Cuz honestly that's really what you need--even in the absence of being able to weight train right now. I'd eat saucy gooey casseroles that are very calorie dense (think lasagna, chicken pot pie, stews, chicken and noodles, chicken and rice). You can blend those things and then thin them out with Fairlife milk or broth in order to make them appropriate for Stage 2/3. Mashed potatoes fully loaded with sour cream or full fat Greek yogurt and cheese and green onions. That sort of thing. But, quite frankly, you really don't need to "gain" just for the sake of gaining. You really just need to not LOSE any more. Here's the "ideal" weight chart that insurance and the med prof uses. It's pretty beyond most of us, cuz it's so low...but look where you are. You're not that far off. If it was me, I'd just chillax about the scale. Eat to your stage, work with your RD to set up a healthy diet that keeps you from losing...then when you can begin a strategic strength training program working out in about 6-10 weeks, then you see an exercise physiologist who is also an RD to put you on a program to gain muscle. Hope you heal well and get better soon!!!

    September bypass buddies??

Me too, I also had a 5AM check-in , I live 50 miles from my surgery hospital, left,Mount Vernon at 3:30, even with road constructs made it just right, checked in, first surgery of day, surgeon checked in with me, brought oodles of anesthesia and other specialities that were going to be present. See I am an over-age (72) specially wonderful type person, got treated like I was fine China. Had minor blip, my place requires 2 car no loading drinks in the time immediately prior, one at us night before, the other 2 hours before checkin, too much talking, not sipping en route so my blood sugar was marginally elevated too high, lowered in 15 minutes, and we were off to the races. First OR cart I ever ride no wobbles , no veering into walls, I once was State Tested Nursing Assistant, know how they are to drive. Dayum, I think, they got some cool equipment HERE! Okay a little loopy thinking but I felt GOoD! We get there, room warm, I have been in ORs you would swear were in a Siberian Swamp. Nice place, a little bright but didn't hurt the eyes. My su4geon was at that point 10 feet away but waved vigorously. Now that might sound. a little babyish, but gave me peace I wasn't being sacrificed on the altar of science to strangers, First OR table that fit, previously always felt I was going to overshoot and land on the cold cold floor. None of this yanking Arms out to each side and just waiting for crucifixion nails. And there was my head anaesthesia guy Dave, he just asked" are you comfortable, and called me by my fist name. I remember saying Yes Thank You Dave and the next thing I remember I was in my patient room waking up. It was 10:30. maybe a quarter to 11, missed recovery room entirely in my mind. And I was not fat, blown up with CO2 gas, my tummy was as flat as always, okay haven't been totally flat for years, but you catch my drift. IV in place, an O2 prong in my nose, but I felt fine, like waking up at home. So I am a curious soul, I snaked my un IVed hand under, no ABDs, 1,2, 3, 4, 5 little steristrip dressings, actually I had 6, one in the navel I didn't know about, no dizzy feeling, pretty scene out window and LUFE WAS GOOD, no urinary cath, Yippee Do Dah, Dr Needleman had not left me worse for wear. Would I do it again? Yep I would. although no one needs 2 dietary pouches. But definitely right thing, pkace, time and surgeon for me, Man knows his craft perfect! Lost 15 pounds on liver-shrinking diet, 18 pounds since surgery, and I am 3 weeks post Wednesday. And a totally of 55 pounds down since my highest weight, oh there is still twice of me than there should be, but a year or 18 months, I will be a lean keen Frustr8 and world prepare to have the Casbah rocked!

Me!! Before surgery. Date October 19
  18. Hey there !!! I just got my date....OCTOBER 19!! I'm having bypass
  19. I'm currently doing 3 sets: 12 reps, 10 reps, 8 reps with increasing weight for each set. For my set of 8, I'm currently at 245 squat, 245 deadlifts, and 165 bench. Been doing these lifts for about 4 weeks now. I'm 6'3" and 222lbs. My squat form sucks, so I'm trying to focus on form and getting lower on squats. It seems I have some hip flexibility issues. Good tip on the weight belt. I'll look into it.

    Help with Heartburn

I have NOT had my surgery yet and I'm not a doctor, but I take a natural remedy that works like a charm when I have heartburn now. I would say it's worth a try and if you make it on the mild side it shouldn't hurt your stomach. This is what I take: About 1 quarter cup of warm water, and the juice of half a lemon, 1 tsp of baking soda. Maybe do less lemon juice and omit the baking soda. What I have learned in the last few years is that as we get older we do not produce enough stomach acid to digest our food. Are you having heartburn during the day or only in the evening? AGAIN MY DISCLAIMER: I haven't had my sleeve surgery yet (10/17/18), but I know it's miserable and wanted to offer you something that has worked for me. Good luck <3 I would take the Tums, at least just temporarily if it will allow you to sleep, until you hear back from your surgeon.

    Lap Band 11 years out

I got my band in 2009. Initially I was very successful but I have regained , slowly at first but heaps over the last couple of years. The band no longer has any effect on my hunger levels. I can eat just about anything except steak or chops. More fill doesn't help it just gives me reflux so bad I wake up choking an acid. One of the disturbing things my surgeon told me at my appointment last week is that what they have found with a band is overtime a lot of patients develop oesophagal failure. This is due to having to work so hard to push food down and it can get to the point where it will no longer be able to do that. That wasnt something that was widely talked about when I got my band. They are now realising that most bands have a lifespan of 5 - 10 years with a max 15 if you are lucky. Bands seem to have fallen out of favour and sleeves seem to be going that way too.

    Pre op diet problems

I'm on day 2 of 10. I can at least half sugar-free Popsicles and jello. You might want to call your surgeon's office and ask if you can add any of these into your diet. They surely don't want you to be too weak going in.
