    Thanksgiving Strategy on Soft Foods

You can always tell others that you have to eat another thanksgiving dinner so you are trying not to overdo it. I used to have to go three places with my ex and I actually had to eat smaller portions at each place. People seemed to understand that.

    EXTREMELY Late Period

So all my life I have had period issues. When I was a teen and into my early 20's I was on birth control pills to give me more normal and regular periods. Was also told that it would help my PCOS, Endometriosis and Adenomyosis . My GYN really wanted me to get a hysterectomy saying that was really the only thing that would cure that stuff but I wasn't ready. I was also young and not sure if I wanted another kid or not. So I didn't get it and stuck to the pills. And the BC pills worked for a while. Until about 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with high BP. Then the doc took me off of them. I was back to square one with the monster migraines, heavy, clotty periods, the periods coming whenever they felt and staying as long as they wanted sometimes lasting like 14 days at a time, etc. Right around the time I was diagnosed with high BP and taken off, I was also diagnosed with Insulin Resistance. So my endocrinologist put me on Metformin and said that would help the IR and PCOS/Endometriosis/Adenomyosis issues and help me becomes regular again without BC pills. And it did!! I would get my period like clockwork within a few days time (usually every 28-33 days). And it usually only lasted like 4 days. So I get the sleeve surgery and was told that my periods could be irregular to start. It was kinda heavy the first few times after surgery and lasted a lil longer than normal but nothing nuts. One of my main goals for getting surgery was to get off of my medication or at least have it cut down. Well on September 13th I had my Metformin cut in half by my regular doc! Needles to say I was very happy! However I now think it's the reason my period is 47 days into my cycle today, 16 days late!! Like I said, I had gone to the doc Sept 13th and got my last period on Sept 17th. I've yet to have one since!! I swear weeks ago I felt like I was gonna get it. I had the aches, the tenderness down there and in my breasts, etc. so I'm not sure why it hasn't come. Has anyone experienced this? I do believe it's due to the Metformin being cut in half. Otherwise it would be very coincidental it was anything else like me going through the change/menopause suddenly when I've had no other signs or symptoms thus far. Has anyone gone through something similar? And no, no chance of being pregnant. Hubby was fixed years ago. Don't really wanna have to go on the pill again just to be regular. And especially not now since my BP meds have also been cut down and I'm doing great BP-wise.

    Shoe sizes... aargh!

When I started losing weight on my own, my shoe size went down (from a 16W to a 14W). It was actually great, because my feet didn't hurt anymore. And so I dutifully bought all new shoes. When I consulted with my surgeon, I asked if it was likely that my shoe size would change again, and he said no, I had arches now and it's not like arches just randomly re-establish themselves to where they were. Don't worry about it, he said. Last week I was exercising and noticed I had a blister on each foot. I went to a shoe store and measured my feet—size 12, and no longer wide. I love the way I feel but my poor wallet! I had to buy new work boots, too, (11.5—those always run big) and those are NOT cheap. I still have 70 lbs. to lose... am I gonna end up doing this all again in six months or a year? I guess we'll find out.
  4. I have PCOS and C-PTSD which results in a lot of anxiety--I didn't really have issues with feeling anxious following my surgery but I did go through a couple weeks right after the surgery where EVERYTHING (and I mean EVERYTHING) was making me cry (even things that made me happy!). The tea tastes really good? Cry. My fiance has been gone for five minutes longer than he said? Cry. I see a cute dog on YouTube? Cry. It's resolved itself pretty quickly, but your system is kind of going to be all over the place and it's probably important to make sure the people surrounding you the first couple weeks know that's normal, and you're not really losing it.

    Constipated HELP!!

I believe you’re mentioning my post so I’m responding: I don’t take exlax daily, it’s every week to week and a half. I do take magnesium daily. Miralax does not work even with daily use. My surgeon has been absolutely useless with any help or answers post surgery and getting a call back isn’t going to happen . As per my PCP I “fired” my surgery center due to the issues I’ve had from the very start with them and incredibly rude, condescending, and unhelpful replies if I even get one at all. My PCP doesn’t have any answers outside of things we’ve already covered. I’ve even tried mega dosing on vitamin C and that doesn’t work as well.

    Anyone with a traveling job?

Thanks, I'll look out for restaurants that have those options (I did sashimi two weeks ago in LA, it was great. I usually get low quality fish that needs a lot of other stuff, but this restaurant was very fancy and the fish was like buttery soft and delicious).
  7. Catwoman is right. You are in the dreaded 3 week stall. It is incredibly frustrating because you went through all of the work for surgery and then ... nothing. I lost 24 pounds in the first 2 weeks. I lost 6 pounds over the next 18 days. Lost 36 pounds in the last 44 days. For the next 2 weeks, either don't step on the scale or step on it expecting no weight loss. Go only by what you feel (energy levels, etc.) and if your clothes start to fit better.

    Anyone with a traveling job?

I need protein. I'm only 7 weeks out. I used to love just getting veggies and salads. I had my first salad (with chicken and egg) yesterday, and the lettuce did not sit well.

    Anyone with a traveling job?

Thanks. I was eating in restaurants and leaving most of the food (I'm not ashamed to throw out food), but restaurant food isn't healthy, so that's what I'm worried about. I carry a water bottle with me and usually don't have trouble getting in more than 80 oz of water a day. I often go to grocery stores, but I don't like to eat things cold that are meant to be hot (like the salmon with green beans that you mentioned, which sounds great!). I bought a salad at Publix yesterday, but the lettuce didn't sit well (I'm only 7 weeks out). Thank you for chiming in. I've followed your success and I'm glad it's possible to do!

    Constipated HELP!!

Miralax, on a regular schedule in the beginning helped a lot. I think I did every other day for a while, then went to every third day, now it is as needed (maybe 2x a week).
  12. Hey everyone I had the switch in September of 2020. I was 419 pounds and got to the lowest point on October 14 where I was 172 pounds. However in the last 3 weeks I am back to 179. I’m getting all in my head and trying to figure out if I’m doing something wrong or is there going to be weight gain regardless. I just figured I had more time. Any feedback would be super amazing.
  13. Thankyou for the reply , I have had 4 attacks just this weeks I hope they do this surgery soon, I feel like I’m having a heart attack every time ! My recovery from the sleeve was pretty bad for the first 2 weeks , I’m praying it won’t be as bad ! 😢

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

You are spot on with what you say, I’m 3 weeks post op and it’s been the toughest journey I’ve ever walked and I’ve been up and down throughout these 3 weeks. it’s not easy. I know it will get easier but I’ve been down every other day as apparently with fat loss your estrogen levels rise and that causes feeling down so that sucks. Im still finding it hard to get my fluid intake in and in turn now today have a migraine probably due to dehydration. im eating soft food and cracker crisp bread with a little cheese or chicken with avocado or yeast extract. Ive gone off eggs, that’s a shame. my sense of smell and taste seems so different, I don’t know if anyone else’s has changed? I’ve lost a total of 17lbs since my op and lost 16 with pre op diet. I feel like it’s slow this week like a quarter of a pound but I’ve been told there is a 3 week stall. I’m really fed up with the down days. Ive not gone back to work yet. Took another week off. Im really struggling today. I’m sorry to be so negative but when I read your insert and though you are so right, people need to know complications can arise as issues and to know you will need support.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Today was weirdly hard because I just wasn't hungry. Had to kind of force myself to drink and eat some stuff. Probably could use another shake, but I'm tired and want to go to bed. Jello has been good. One more week... then another couple weeks, lol.
  16. I think what happened is that I burned the lower part of my esophagus via acid reflux, and it seems to be on its way to healing. (My bariatric team had me start taking two acid reducers)...it's the weirdest thing though, I never had acid reflux before the surgery, and I know there were at least a few times things were coming up my throat in my sleep. Over the last week I've been able to eat 2-3 small "meals" each day (my dinner was two rice crackers with thai chili tuna on them, for instance), which isn't where I should be, but it's a damn sight better than being able to only get water, protein shakes, and juice down.
  17. Yep. Had my gall removed 2 years after my sleeve. I had a single stone which suddenly decided to stage a riot - worst pain ever. My surgeon used three of the same keyhole incisions from my sleeve plus one new one. He said once you have one stone you’ll develop others & once you’ve experienced a severe attack you’ll have more attacks. Better to remove the gall. Honestly, the recovery was comparatively worse than the sleeve. I had gas pain (never did after the sleeve) & a lot of muscular discomfort across the abdomen like lots of pulled muscles which I didn’t after my sleeve. In saying that, the pain wasn’t bad & I was only taking the odd over the counter pain med from about day 3. It’s all relative. It is pretty common as some have had stones for years & didn’t know - just rumbling symptoms. High cholesterol or significant weight loss can contribute to the development of gall stones as can high bilirubin levels. Some women develop them during menopause. I ticked the boxes for all four possible causes as while I was losing my cholesterol increased (dropped to my usual level once I reached goal).

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Mine was on October 14th. It’s really nice to see how positive and excited everyone is. But it is equally as important to acknowledge our fears and the reality of recovery. I was very scared going into it and everyone said “you’ll be fine, and shared their positive experiences”. I was planning to have family come to stay and help out with the recovery period but because of all the positive experiences, I didn’t go that direction and really regret that decision. I am now 2.5 weeks post op and it has been so difficult to manage all the different pieces related to the diet whilst trying to manage anemia and other issues that arose post op. I see others that had the surgery on the same day as I and with the same doctor go through an easy recovery period. We’re all different and the reality is that it is not always easy, complications are possible, and we need to be prepared for complications.

    Constipated HELP!!

Careful with the exlax - It can cause problems long term. After about two weeks post surgery, I had to use what is referred to in our house as the "nuclear option" (enema). It was AWFUL - SERIOUSLY HORRENDOUS - Since then, I've had problems, but overall things have worked out with time and the ability to get in some raw vegetables (I know you aren't there yet). I started with just lettuce, tomato, and protein powder in my dressing. Every few days, that did the trick. I find that when I get my fluid intake in and walk more, I can stay pretty regular. With regards to Miralax, are you taking it every day? If not, you might want to try that first rather than waiting until it's bad.

    Anyone with a traveling job?

Hi Liza, yes - I travel quite often for work and travelled a LOT starting a few weeks after surgery. For me, as soon as I could start eating "real" food, it was HARD to resist the temptation to order whatever looked good off a menu vs. what I should eat. For the first few months, I got most of my food to go and just went back to the room, ate what I could in 20-30 minutes and then threw away the rest of it. Why? Because I eat when I'm bored and if I left it in my fridge, I would hav gradually eaten all of it over the course of several hours. Now, honestly, it's even harder because I can eat what would be considered a "normal" portion to most skinny people (I still have lots of restriction). What I have to watch for at work when traveling is grazing. So often customer have foo or snacks out and again... if it's there, I'll eat it. I also tend to eat much more salt when I travel (restaurants, prepared food) and find that when I get back home, I'll sometimes be as much as 2-3 pounds up even when I was good. Drink water for a couple of days and I'll easily drop that and usually another pound. I also seem to retain a lot more water when I'm flying. So, you're not alone.... What's worked for me: 1. Throw away leftovers if you can't control yourself. 2. Buy the large bottles of water or bring a large water bottle with you - Make sure you're actually drinking it! 3. Grocery stores are great - I love Fresh Market or Whole Foods for their prepared food (salmon and green beans are my go to there). Publix also sells premade small salads that are the perfect size and have a good amount of protein. Over the course of a year, I'm pretty close to my goal weight and probably traveled at least 30 weeks of that. It takes some trial and error to see what works best for you.

    Stalling

I thought it was water weight from salt or from dehydration from the plane, but I was home for four days and I didn't even get back to the weight I was when I left... now I'm back on the road. I won't be home for two weeks, although I will be at my parents' house, and there is a scale there (not sure if it is the same calibration as my scale tho).

    Stalling

I didn't have a three week stall exactly, but I am at 7 weeks out and I lost NADA last week - actually went up 0.2 lbs. I'm worried it's from the traveling.
  23. I don't drink as much when I'm on site (I work some days from home but most days I'm traveling so on planes and hotels and hospitals), but I still get my liquids in and even with 60-80oz of liquid a day, I don't have to go to the bathroom more than two or three times during my 8 hour day (obviously I pee before and after a few times). Artificial sweeteners, caffeine, coffee, and tea are bladder irritants so you may find you need to pee less frequently if you avoid those. I drink lots of tea with splenda and I still don't have to pee every 30 minutes. Check with your doctor, but also, you can get an accommodation if you need to use the bathroom more frequently or drink during class. The school legally has to provide this - ADA laws.

    Constipated HELP!!

I’ve tried Miralax, Milk of magnesia. Senakot and none of them worked. Unfortunately the only thing that gets things moving for me is Exlax (which causes pretty painful cramping 6-10 hours after taking) and sugar feee chocolate. I know the sugar free chocolate isn’t the answer even though it’s within my calories for the day, so I do the exlax every week and a half. I do have bowel movements 2-3 a week otherwise. Coming from a consistent 1-2x a day my whole life, this has been a frustrating change.
