  1. I can understand your surgeons advice- my surgeon would prefer us to get our calories from food do and not do as much protein shakes. With that being said I am an RN too and protein shakes work for me and I continue to drink them at over three years out. I usually drink one on my drive into work and drink another on my drive home. That way even if I get busy I have a nice amount of protein in my system. For my meals I pack a variety of stuff, but like you said some shifts we don't have time to sit and eat a leisurely meal- that's why I always have a protein shake with me at work. Good luck

    Preop diet Confession

You hit the nail on the head, Nyelaah - don't be hard on yourself. In my pre-op educational class, the nutritionist mentioned cheating a couple of times. No one is perfect! I haven't minded the Protein shakes. I started having one a day before the two week pre-op diet just to get used to them. They keep me full for the most part, and I like the taste. My surgery is also scheduled for this Friday, July 17. It was supposed to have been Monday, but was cancelled (surgeon running behind due to complications with other cases). I was devastated, but know that everything happens for a reason! Wishing you all good luck!

What are your Pre-Op diet guidlines?

2 weeks 3 Protein shakes per day, no solid food. Other things I can eat are broth, Jello, sugar free popsicles, decaf coffee/tea are fine. Liquid only day before surgery. Nothing midnight before surgery. My nutritionist said they want us getting used to eating just three meals a day. Although I think drinking three meals a day is more accurate.
  4. Absolutely no coffee or soda for me again. I haven't got my official diet yet but I do think I can have solids it's just very calorie restricted. 700 calories a day for 2 weeks
  5. Hi All, Please help I am 2 months post opp. this week. My meals consist of very little food (which I understand and I am happy with). Mornings would be egg on toast (one quarter), lunch for the most part quarter glass of milk to get tablets down and then supper would be a little experimentation such as possible chicken or pie (small portion). The problem is that I do not need to ever use the bathroom (which is fine being that I am eating less) but then suddenly one day I would have to rush off with a mixture of diarrhoea and normal stomach. I usually counteract this with immodium This is normally followed by a week of nothing and then the same story again. I am obviously doing something to irritate my stomach but because I work on the road this type of unexpected problem needs to be avoided. Need to mention that I was a ex. bandster and I wonder if the carbs could have some contribution (had no carbs for 5 years) Any advice will be helpful Regards Andre ps I drink coffey and tea during the day, I know "liquids in - liquids out" but how do you avoid this :party4:

    Dumping Vs. Eating Too Fast

About 2/3 of folks who experience dumping get it 15 to 30 minutes following consumption of some foods - usually high in sugar or fat. The other 1/3 don't experience the symptoms of dumping for one to three hours or more following eating. So I'd say it may well be dumping. I had my first experience with dumping about seven months out and after eating some red grapes - which led me to believe it was in response to the sugar, but I did not have any vomiting. Light headedness, dizzyness, "the shakes", diarrhea, even fainting (rare) - are all possible symptoms of dumping. How often has it happened and what food(s) brought it on?
  7. Hey All, My Dr told me to ensure I'm taking my multi Vitamins twice a day. It hasn't really been a chore to figure out a good schedule to take the vitamins and meds (PPI and Gallbladder). However, this past week I'm noticing that as I'm getting farther out from surgery taking my multi (Flinstone Complete) in the afternoon is causing sleep problems. I even switched my workout to the AM because I was worried that was it. Nope, I've figured it's the multi as I've played around a bit with dosing times. Right now my vitals all look good but I'm wondering...would it mess up my vitals to take both doses in the AM? Anyone have any experience with this? My Dr said to try and see what happens, but I just don't want to find out too late that dosing so close together (more than 2 hours but less than 6) throws my vitals out of whack. Thanks for any suggestions/experiences you have to share!

7 Weeks Post Op and Stalled!

Stalls are common. How's your water intake per day? Are you exercising? You really might want to look at bumping your calorie intake up a few hundred to see if that helps kick your metabolism back on.

    Low Potassium

I was scheduled to have my surgery yesterday (6/17/09) and it had to be postponed  due to lab results indicating low potassium. I had blood work on monday morning and my dr. called me on tues. afternoon to let me know that there was a concern with the ressults, but he thought it was just a lab error. When I arrived at the hospital yesterdy for my surgery, they took more blood to double check my potassium...sure enough it was not a lab error...I had to turn around and go home. I can't begin to explain how disappointed i was. My dr. explained that he thought the low potassium was due to a combination of my blood pressure medication and the required one week liquid diet. He told me to stop the BP med (which he prescribed) eat regular for a week and then back to liquids the following week with surgery rescheduled for July 1. Anyone else have a problem with low potassium? I am going to try to bring it back up by eating a banana every day and hope that it works?!?!?! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I cannot imagine getting all the way to the hospital and preped for surgery only to be sent home AGAIN, i will just cry!

    Food unappealing

I still struggle with wanting food. It brought me such pleasure in my pre-sleeve life. . I waste stuff now. Things do not taste same. My favs are not my favs anymore. Trying to find new things right now. I am about 7 weeks out. I did get some of changs whit meat chicken. No rice. And their special dipping sauce and that us frankly the only thing I have truly enjoyed. I think in a few months things will change. It's hard but I never thought our journey would be easy. Good luck and just keep trying.
  11. Hello All, I am currently in Montego Bay, Jamaica at the Sandals resort and yes... I am on VST from my room. (That' s how addicted I am to this very supportive and knowledgeable forum. LOL) Anyhow, I am having descent time out here, but even it this unimaginable beautiful place of peace and tranquility I realized that true happiness lies from within, not your environment!!! I am pre-op and will be having my surgery exactly 4 weeks from tomorrow and all l can think about is "How much more fun would I have if I was post-sleeve and somewhat near my goal?" I am sure some of you out there have felt the same way. I find myself not being involved as I would like to be, but I am glad that will soon change. I promise to myself, not only get the sleeve, but to work hard to change my life for the better at the same time. Next time I come to "Paradise" I will be bringing Peace and Tranquility with me.... Thanks for listening!!! Peace and Blessings everyone!!!!

    Help Out Of Stall

Congratulations! You have reached "The Dreaded Week-3 Stall". It's perfectly normal and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or more. But don't worry -- after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. If you're interested, here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight like crazy!

    Spilling the beans

I have only told 2 people in office at this point and like you there is a group of us who work closely and some of us eat together in the cafeteria everyday. The pre-op diet hasn't been bad, I have just been saying I am on a doctor supervised plan, with high Protein and I am telling them how much I lose each week. I haven't given them the opportunity to speculate about it. My surgery was originally going to be the 11th but the doctor wanted me to continue the pre-op for a few more weeks. The challenge for me is going to be returning to work while in week two full liquids. I can always bring yogurt or cream Soups or broth and they may not question it along with my already standard Protein shakes. I know it must be hard in such a small office but if they see you doing stuff pre-op with protein shakes and whatnot and you just come out and say you are on a diet supervised from your doctor, they may not think anything of it. I too said I was going on vacation and when I come back and continue to lose weight perhaps they won't be surprised since they knew I was trying and was losing beforehand. Your situation is definitely more complex because of the roommate. Stay positive and don't let it worry you. And if they do find out or you do decide to tell them, their opinion or comments don't matter. All that matters is you and you should be comfortable with your decision to do this. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about it.
  14. Hello everyone! I just recently found this site and what great information!! I contemplated band vs sleeve last year but then had to have 2 foot surgeries, so weight loss was put on the back burner. Here I am now, plus about 10 lbs, thinking about it again. I've already had a consult with one dr and going to another next week. I keep doubting myself though for some reason, maybe I can try to lose weight on my own (even though I've tried tons of times over the last 12 years!), maybe this is too drastic, etc. Obviously if we could all lose weight on our own, we would. So I'm thinking I'm just second guessing myself now? I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder about a year ago and now with the meds I'm on, my weight just keeps going up and no matter what do, I can't lose weight! Anyone have words of wisdom or encouragement? Of course I'm scared of the surgery itself and the pain and post op issues. But I'm hoping that I can get in the right frame of mind to convince myself that this is the right thing to do and stop second guessing myself! Be happy with my decision & look forward to a healthier life. Can someone help me get there? Is this a normal feeling at this stage? Thank you so much in advance!!

Scared? Why am I doubting myself?

You're doubting yourself because after years of failed attempts, this is what we do. We doubt, or in MY case, obsess about it working 'this time'. It will, when 85% of your tummy is removed, unless you make an effort at failing, you will lose weight!!! I promise you. All of us worry, I had surgery June 2010, I've been maintaining for over two years now and I STILL worry. For me, this has been easy. I had no health issues and was healthy, so I'm sure that helped, but pain was no big deal. After being discharge I only took pain meds before bed and only for ten days. I took liquid Tylenol and used a heating pad during the day!! Turning over in bed hurt, so the pain medication took the edge off. I can tell you, what did hurt is a sneeze, cough or if someone makes you laugh, that lasts for a week or so, but it is nothing really. I was excited from the moment I woke up in recovery. A new adventure, I've loved every minute of it. I'd read in a forum that a neat thing to do is go buy a disposable camera.....have someone take a picture of you the night before surgery or the morning of....then take a picture every month on your 'date' for a year. After you take the one on your 1 yr anniversary, go have the camera developed. There is NOTHING like laying out those pictures, side by side and seeing the transformation. It is truly amazing, do it!!! I too lost weight, I lost the same 50 lbs three times in 30 years and lesser amounts more times than I can remember. I did everything from Weight Watchers to Phen/Fen. I can LOSE weight, that is not the problem, in later years, not as easily though. It is keeping it off that is practically impossible. Once you go off the diet, then you gain. Now I am NOT on a diet. I feel like I eat like a naturally thin person. I'm still obsessed with food, with making good choices. I eat sweets and other things, but rather than over doing it, I have a normal piece of cake and it is not what I do real often. Life is good, it's a wild ride, and oh-so-fun!!!!

    Post op scared

I'm sorry you're struggling...from what I've read so far, the first couple of weeks are the hardest. I hope that you can find a support group! Wish I could help you, but I haven't had the surgery yet and I'm no longer in the Atlanta area But if you need to chat, I'm available!
  17. Even happier now as I'm at 39 pounds as of today...almost 11 weeks out. It goes by so darn fast!

I gained 1.5 pounds on MUSHIES!

this was the reason I signed on this morning, I lost 10lbs post op and for the last 3 days the scale hasn't moved!!!!!! I'm so frustrated, I'm still on full liquids....so I am hungry and I'm not loosing weight. When do your doctors do the first fills? I have an appt next week which will be just under a month post op, will they do it then or only after you start back on "real" food?

I geel like I can eat too much...opinions

My stomach held around the same as yours at six weeks. I had very little inflammation so my stomach was much closer to its "mature" size than many other sleevers. Also, I had a rather long stomach so it's just automatically going to be able to hold more since there's nothing they can do about the length. As for you not losing/gaining.. that's very normal.. you may even have an entire month with no loss.. stalls happen. They suck but it's all part of the process.
  20. Sounds like they may have over filled you and now you are stuck in the vicious cycle of puking causes swelling causes puking. Fills can take a week to really kick in and that may be why you were ok for a while. Back to the doctor you go. If you are feeling incredibly crappy in the meantime, you may want to swing by your nearest hospital and get yourself plugged in for some fluids to tie you over.
  21. SO i was banded 5 months ago. Ive lost 50 lbs and I feel amazing. Up til afew days ago! I just got my 4th fill 2 and a half weeks ago and I was fine. Last Wednesday i started vomiting everything I ate. And I had a Dr. appt on friday but I cancelled because I thought my cousin gave me the flu. And i was able to eat on thursday. Well over the weekend its gotten worse and i can barely keep WATER down! I'm scared my band has slipped! I'm calling the Dr. office first thing in the morning to go in. I feel a little weak but not super sick or dehydrated. Any advice????
  22. Has anyone gotten pregnant after the sleeve? I’m 10 weeks and having bad food aversions and nausea. Idk how I’m going to gain weight when I barely ate before pregnancy and now even less with pregnancy because nothing looks appetizing and I’m sick half the time (not throwing up just nausea). I’m just nervous I won’t be able to eat enough to gain the recommended weight for pregnancy. Sigh! 😞

    Is anyone else feeling down?

I was there! I was actually not doing so hot when I left the hospital in my intake and it went back down. Then I increased but now have gone down again. Your body is changing ! Be kind to yourself and to it 💖 it will definitely thank you later. If you go a week more like that maybe call the hospital backto see if you can meet with the dietitian or speak with someone over the phone. Hang in there I know it's tough, I'm still navigating the highs and lows and I'm 3 weeks post op Xo
