  1. I'm having a revision done on 5/4. I started at 230 lbs and got banded in Mexico in 2007. I dropped as low as 119 pounds because I threw up so much. I couldn't even get Water to go through much of the time. I had the band unfilled in 2010 and my weight bounced up and down between 120 and 170 depending on whether I let myself starve because I couldn't get healthy foods through the band or I gave up and ate crackers and cheetos and popcorn (which for some reason would go through the band). My insurance (Kaiser) approved the revision to a sleeve because of the problems with the band. An upper GI showed it hadn't slipped but was too tight, even unfilled. I was afraid they would say no because I weighed 145 when I first started this revision process but they approved it. I actually gained 10 pounds during the Pre Op classes because I had to travel so far to get to the classes that my exercise program fell apart. I'm glad to know I'm not alone here. I've been living with the band and the throwing up and the problems for so long. I looking forward to drinking water, even if it's just little sips. Document your problems and see a doctor. If you're having problems they might say yes to the revision.
  2. Let me know when you make your decision please. I will be getting a revision from band to sleeve. I can't wait either!!!! Looks like I am going to have to wait until July for my sleeve. I can't get vacation time at work to take my week off until then.
  3. I was originally denied the revision to the sips but my doc talked to the doc at aetna and approved it after I go through the 3 month follow up with a nutritionist like I did when I was sleeved.

    Surgery date change

Hi Toni good luck with ur revision. Curious though did ur doc make u lose 30 pounds before surgery? That seems like a lot.
  5. After a 4 month battle with my insurance I am finally approved to get my revision. I had a lap band for 11 years and it has been the worse, I am currently due to get my revision to Gastric BY-pass in may... These responses have been encouraging for me to read
  6. I've seen the same thing. I think people become very defensive of their procedure. I think I know the exact thread you are referring to as well. I think a lot of doctors do call it a DS as it is a modified DS procedure. I had mine done by Dr. Jawad at Orlando Bariatric and Laproscopy. It was a robotic procedure to boot! The procedures offered were thoroughly explained at the info seminar and at the first appointment when you determine surgery type. The biggest advantages are the pylorus is intact reducing dumping syndrome, lessening the gas and diarrhea issues and because it is a bit simpler the the surgery takes less time, so less time under anesthesia and a quicker recovery. While it isn't really a "new" procedure it is kinda the new kid on the block. All WLS procedures were new at one time and doctors and researchers spend hundreds of hours improving them. My doctor's office no longer performs the lap band because the long term results on many require revisions.

    Pain After Surgery

My recovery was very smooth. I didn't bother to take any prescription pain meds because I didn't want the nausea and I was fine without them. I felt like recovery is easier for revision patients because we went thru it before

    Advice please band to sleeve

Banded in Dec 2010. Lost 76 pounds - gained back 20. Lots of trouble last 1 1/2 years with sinus & band blockages. So April 6 - had band to sleeve revision - same operation. So far - so good. Still on liquids but am very pleased with surgery - lost 20 lbs so far. Had surgery in moring & came home that afternoon. Took 1 week off work for recovery & then took it very easy 1st week back to work. This week - feeling much more "like myself" energy coming back, etc. Challenge to get all Protein in (no different than band) & challenge to get all liquids in. It was a GREAT decision for me. Good luck on making your decision.
  10. I had a revision on April 1st,2015 my BMI was 31 and the insurance approved the revision without problems.

    Weak from liquid diet?

realized this was revision to Bypass after I posted : ) I found that as long as I was getting my Proteins and fluids I actually felt good. I think I felt better than I did pre-op when I was eating so many carbs and big portions. I was more tired... the body wants more rest to heal, but I wasn't weak from lack of food.
  12. I'm having revision from sleeve to MGB on 4/23 !! Terrified but also excited !

    Protein Powder

Hi everyone! I ordered a sample pack of the nectar flavors. I think it's 12 packets for $19.99. I have yet to try em though. ???? I'm in the pre op stages. Just completed my month 4 of 6 nutritional classes. I'm a revision from band to bypass.
  14. Are there any out there having revision done band to sleeve that has Pomco for insurance? Also has anyone had it done in Syracuse NY. Doctor Kim ??

    Advice please band to sleeve

I was revised band to sleeve in Oct 2014. Complications I've encountered personally: i have developed GERD, for the first 6 months i was lactose intolerant and could not eat any form of meat for the first 5 months. My gall bladder had to be removed 3 months after i was sleeved (this is quite normal due to losing a lot if weight in a short amount of time). My GERD is being controlled by taking one 20mg tablet of omeprazole a day. Thats about it! For me the revision has been 100% been worth it.

    May Sleevers...where are you?

Congrats to all of you that have gotten your surgery date! That is so exciting! It is nice to have this support group to share the journey. We can share our fears, our experiences and thoughts as we go along the journey. Matthew282, here in Delaware, we are required to be on the 2-week liquid diet for some reason. They say that the insurance companies are now requiring it. I am having a revision from band to sleeve. I was banded in 2008 and wasn't required to do any type of pre-surgery diet, so it's all new for me too. I start tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be on here looking for support!! =) We can do this! Here's to a healthier, more active life!
  17. Revision as in re do the RYN; or from sleeve to RNY? I had the re-do of RNY. I did not feel particularly weak. If you take your Water and Protein, you should be fine. The burning fat should provide energy. But, after major surgery, of course you won't feel 100%! Yard work, routine house work after 6 days post op is not reasonable. You need time to heal and acclimate; but if you temper yourself, you shouldn't feel so bad.

    REFLUX

I've tried coming off my PPI twice post-op and had acid issues again immediately both times. I'm okay with being on a PPI forever. I would rather that than have another surgery and revise to bypass with all the potential complications there. I mean, I'm already on vitamins for life, what's one more pill to take every day?

    Surgery sch. For May 8th!

Hi Manuela, Are you having the lap band done or a revision? My surgery is on May 6th and I'm having a revision from the lap band to the gastric sleeve. I begin my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow. Nervous and excited all at the same time!
  20. Hi there and welcome! This is a great site for researching information about weight loss surgery, getting and giving support to others who are thinking about getting WLS or have already had this surgery and also venting when there just isn't anyone to share you concerns with. I am a RNY gastric bypass patient who is 7 months post op. This surgery was all about getting healthier for me. Weight loss was secondary as I was in a bit of trouble health wise. I currently have psoriatic arthritis, hypothyroidism and degenerative spine disease. Prior to surgery I had diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, uncontrollable reflux/gerd and stage 3 kidney disease. The kidney disease is what pushed me to have this surgery. At my check in with my nephrologist in February, I was told that my kidney function was normal and I was no longer at risk. I chose bypass because I was informed it would resolve my reflux and the sleeve would make this worse. I had also done a lot of research and learned that the band was not an option given how many people have to have it revised to a bypass down the road. Immediately following surgery my diabetes and reflux were completely gone! Within 4 weeks post op my kidney function had improved and my cholesterol was normal. I was removed from all medications with the exception of hypothyroid replacement and a beta blocker used for the prevention of migraines. I was on a ton of medications. My recovery was text book. I followed all of the rules and continue to do so and I believe this is why I have been so successful. I am down over 90lbs with 53 to go. I would agree that the 10 day pre-op diet is challenging but very doable and it sets you up for success. For me the toughest part was the puréed diet. Ugh! I just did not tolerate blended meats and I don't tolerate Beans of any kind. They cause me to gag and vomit.during that stage I lived on Protein shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt and creamed Soups. This surgery was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. There was not ever one second that I regretted it. I can eat anything I want without getting sick. My body craves good protein and good carbs. My sugar addiction is completely gone. I love to get exercise when I used to hurt so bad that I could not move. This week I discovered that I can sit on the floor with both my legs crossed Indian style. Do you know how long it's been since I could do that? I can literally run up and down the stairs when I used to suffer just to get up a small flight. I look and feel fantastic. People that have not seen me for a while are shocked at how great I look. I used to hate shopping, now I love trying on new clothes. It is a blast! Insurance covered everything for me with the exception of co pays. It took 9 months to get through the process mostly because of the six month supervised diet. That time was critical to helping me build good behaviors. This surgery is NOT the easy way out, it requires hard work every single day. My new pouch is a tool I use to help make good nutrition possible. I wish you the best of luck. Please feel free to reach out, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

    Gastric Bypass VS Sleeve

@ I can imagine that's not an easy decision. Is it a long process to go through to get the revision? And idea when you'll get it if you go ahead?

    Gastric Bypass VS Sleeve

@@losing-it I have a hiatal hernia too. Of I could do it all over I would have done RNY hands down. I did a two week liquid diet and post liquids none off that is easy. As is the decision to do a revision.... I wish you the best and I am glad that my story gives you some insight. Some people have done real well with the sleeve. Just not me.

    Gastric Bypass VS Sleeve

@, sorry to hear it's not worked out as well as you'd have hoped. I already have the reflux etc. I've been on omeprazole for 3 years. I had an endoscopy last week and I have a small hiatal hernia and they mentioned that the big muscle at the bottom of my oesophagus is not closing fully - that's why the food easily comes back up. To go through the op and make the acid reflux worse would be a nightmare. Based on you're comment I'm even more convinced the bypass would be better. Thank you for sharing your story. Hope you get your revision soon and everything works out!
  24. I will have to be on Clear liquids and Protein drinks after my revision for 7-10 days. Question: don't you feel extraordinarily weak during this time?
  25. SleeveandRNYchica

    Gastric Bypass VS Sleeve

I just had to barium swallow and upper gi. I am scheduled for endoscopy next. I have terrible reflux and it was shown in the tests. They have prescribed Nexium. I am 2.5 years post op. I got pregnant 12 months post sleeve and have not been able to lose weight since delivery. Surgeon told me he has seen several cases post pregnancy when sleeve has stretched. So my sleeve is larger than expected now. So we are reviewing my options. I was a very slow looser to begin with losing 53lbs up until my pregnancy. That was with working out 5-6 days a week and tracking. To say I am frustrated is an understatement. Everything I eat gives me heartburn! And food gets stuck in my throat...I am in the process for a revision... So frustrating
