    Peanut Butter

I had a small spoonful of Peanut Butter a few days ago (even though my nutritionist has it on the "foods you should NEVER eat when you're trying to lose weight" list). She also has bacon on that list and I'll tell you right now, THIS fat girl will NOT go without a piece of bacon occasionally. NO diet is worth that! I plan to use PB sparingly once I'm released to solids on crackers for a snack/protein boost.
  2. I agree 100%! and all the times I gave up I gained back what I lost and more!!! Thats why I never dieted through this whole thing...

Thinking about getting my band removed

I think your concern is legitimate. I have never read of anyone who had their band removed and was able to keep their weight off. Even unfills seem to provoke weight gain, as I have experienced. Have you considered a revision surgery? There are many on this forum that have revised from the band to a sleeve or bypass, with excellent results and no issues.

Thinking about getting my band removed

Personally, if I were you I would get a complete unfill and then SLOWLY scale up until you find your sweet spot If you're still not feeling well then I personally would have it removed- but not before arming me with the proper tools for weight loss. These include 1)a support system 2) a nutritionist 3) a counselor to help you modify your eating habits If in a year you cannot keep the weight off/gain weight THEN I would start thinking of other surgeries, but as you said you can't remember what it feels like to eat normally and I don't think you can bounce to another surgery so quickly if you got banded so long ago at such a young age Take time to rediscover your body in a healthy, you just might like it

Blogging, my mother, my guilt and me

Some of my weight issues stem from childhood, but more stem from a positively evil, abusive ex that destroyed my self-esteem. I've written about it before, and I haven't the slightest shred of guilt. I've learned via therapy that sometimes the only way to deal with pain is to talk about it, whether with a therapist, or write about it in a blog, journal, whatever. If you are trying to put the baggage behind you, then you need to acknowledge that it's there. And don't let it have power over you (that is so much easier said than done. It's 12 years since I left the abusive ex, and only now am I starting to heal enough that I could do this surgery for myself and understand that yes, I am worth it) Learning to cope is an ongoing process, and I am extremely grateful that my insurance is paying for me to continue seeing my therapist.
  7. If you write a blog post http://babeimsleevin.blogspot.com/2014/06/yesallwomen.html that implicates your mother but then you feel guilty about doing so, does that make it ok? :-) For those of you who also have deep baggage related to your weight from your childhood, how have you learned to cope with it?

    NSV: Going to the Doctor

I know......it really never bothers me to go to the doctor any more. I look forward to the stupid scale. It makes me proud that I will never look at a 3 before my weight again! Congratulations! You have done so well and have been such an inspiration to others on this site.

  10. Congratulations on your weight loss thus far. Just remember your energy and enthusiasm in the coming weeks if and when you hit a stall and don't beat yourself about it! Your body will lose weight at its own pace.
  11. That's awesome! I'm only 3 weeks out and have been on a 2 week stall already. Looking forward to a weight loss like yours

    Distal gastric bypass?

Sounds like a DS with pouch vs sleeve. Doesn't seem too out of the norm really, with your height/weight, the extra support from the DS should make a really decent impact. I have reservations about your goal weight however. I don't see a Bypass DS hybrid is going to get you to lose 242 lbs, I'd be afraid that you'll get frustrated with such an ambitious goal weight. WLS has around a 60-65% excess body weight loss success. Meaning whatever your "Ideal" weight is, subtracted from your current total, then taking only 60-65% of that. So, for a Female standing 5 foot 3, "Ideal" weight is 104-127. Your call out states you current weigh 407. So assuming the high end of "Ideal" your excess weight is 280. 65% of 280 is 182. You should expect to reach 225 as your 65% of your excess body weight goal. Anything beyond that is great, but don't set your sights on a weight that's really not feasible without plastic surgery. By all means strive for the best possible outcome, just keep in mind a more realistic goal, because when you can't reach a goal, frustration and depression can set in and sabotage your process. Speaking from personal experience, I originally had 200 as my dream goal, knowing I'd have a hard time hitting it. I've gotten close, within 7 lbs of that goal, but it's just not happening, excess skin adds to total weight, and you can't eat or exercise extra skin away.

    United Healthcare?

How far are along in the process? I wonder if the BMI during the 6 month supervision is based on your policy? I called and spoke with the insurance company today and asked the rep if I dropped, and only for a month, would I be denied? I also asked if an appetite suppressor would weigh on their decision to deny or accept? She very strongly said no and that both are indicators of my attempt to lose weight on my own, but prove that I obviously cannot maintain the weight loss. I've seen it go both ways...for multiple insurance companies. Everything is so convoluted. I understand it being a ton of money up front, but the cost they save in the end after surgery and the positive effects it has on your body/medical situation, you'd think they'd make the process a little easier. Either way- I'll just have to wait and see how it all works out. I wish you the best of luck in your process and hope it goes by as quickly and easily as possible!

    United Healthcare?

I was just approved last week and have United Healthcare. I did the 6 month supervised diet but was far away enough away from the bmi limit not to have to worry about it. But honestly if you are below the bmi and have no comorbidity that might be an issue. My Dr had.to fill out a form with my weights and what was discussed at each visit. I also had to provide the past 5 years of medical weigh ins. I'm scheduled for 11/17 and can not wait. It was a long and hard wait. Good luck!!!!!

BJJ & Weight Training before & after Gastric Sleeve?

@@eastharlempana Welcome!! I'm pre op so I can't really talk about my experience but there's a guys group on here that I recommend checking out. A lot of them are frequent gym goers and will have advice on muscle gain etc. I'm a Krav Maga girl and I know what it's like to be so obsessed with something you can't imagine not doing it for a day, let alone a month or two. I've been injured more times than I can remember and not being able to train is so hard. But I think this is just going to be one of those short term pain for long term gain type of situations. The waiting sucks, but you'll need to just be patient and give yourself time to heal. When the time comes, you'll be able to kick arse even harder. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Scale isn't moving

Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or even longer. But don't worry – after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. If you're interested, here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again like crazy! (Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)
  17. We will be visiting family for Christmas this year and I will be at the solid foods stage by then. They are all about the food, their cooking means so much to them if you don’t have something then they will get upset. I’ve looked up most of the nutritional info on the foods and have found some I can eat and others to avoid. The ones I am most unsure of is lumpia (egg rolls) because of the wrapper and pancit because it is noodles. I’m concerned the noodles or wrapper might get hung up or swell up, what do you think? I can bypass them, no problem, but asking just to make sure. Please don’t think I am asking because I want to return to the foods that made me fat. I didn’t do all of this just to jump into bad habits. I’m going to be there a week and want to make good decisions while I am there. If I have a plan, I can avoid things that won’t work. I’ve done this same thing with Restaraunt’s and fast food joints incase my family decides to go out. I am not allowed to cook while I am there so it’s their food or protein shakes. Have a great day! Somebody Please Respond Just a Few ?s

Ok everyone here is the thing, I'm being banded on 1/25/07, and I just have a few more questions to ask. Ok on the two week pre op diet should I A. Stop smoking until after surgery, and B. should I go on this 10 days or 14 prior to surgery date, because all I am allowed is glucerna weight loss shakes *very expensive* juice broths teas lowfat or plain yogurt not very exciting haha. Ask your surgeon. Each has their own pre- and post-op guidelines. Also what kind of anasthesea do they use is like gas or is it like the liquid valume stuff they pump in your iv. In the prep area I was given some kind of liquid thruogh my IV that made me a little loopy. They called it "happy juice" and "milk of amnesia". In the OR I was given gas. The last thing I remember before waking up was them putting the mask on... it was a little crooked on my face, and I thought - "All the gas will leak out and I'll never fall asleep..." Then I was waking up. Or does it depend. Also what I want to ask is some statistics like how many ppl have their band after years of having it in, Well, then you'd have to know specifically what you want to know. "How many people after years" is impossible to answer. I know two sisters banded in 2001 and both still have their bands. or how many have died from it None to date, that I'm aware of. Refererring to the band itself. or how many bands have eroded etc. The erosion percentage is something like - less than one percent (if that's now inaccurate, someone please correct me). So find some literature and get a number of how many people have been banded, and multiply by .01 and that's your worst case scenario. Just a few scary thoughts. One other thing guys I can't sleep on my back I have to normaly sleep on my somache is this going to be a problem? I doubt you'll be able to sleep on your stomach, at least in the first week. It took me (I think) 2 days to get into my own bed. Until then I was sleeping in a recliner. Once in bed I slept on my back propped up on about 5 pillows, or on my side with a pillow under my stomach to support the port incision. How much pain medecine do they give you is it all liquid, how much pain are you in when you wake up from sugery? When asked to rate my pain on a scale of 1 - 10, which they asked me before I was fully awake, I answered "like a half". I just didn't have any pain. Within the first 45 minutes of waking up I was given a dose of hydrocodone. And upon release they have me a rx for a week's worth. I took about half of it, then went to liquid Tylenol. I didn't have significant pain unless I was standing, sitting, coughing, sneezing... or hitting potholes in the road.
  19. Hi all, I'm very happy with my weight loss so far, but in completing my online food journal I've noticed I'm averaging about 6 grams of Fiber a day, whereas the amount I am allowed is 29 grams. Is anyone else having trouble getting enough fiber into their diet? On the other hand, I did set a personal best on Protein today...134 grams! :boink:
  20. Hi Everyone, I'm Maggie. I'm going to be banded on July 27. Even though I know it's not logical to worry, I still am. What if after I'm banded and I do everything the way I'm supposed to: follow the new diet, do the exercise and follow up at the doc's like I'm supposed to, and I don't lose weight? I guess what is making me think that is that I'm on the liquid pre-surgery diet right now. My doc told me that I would lose 20-30 pounds on it. Right now I'm holding at 12 pounds and I still have a week to go yet. I haven't lost anything this week at all. I have not cheated. I have done exactly as I am supposed to be doing. So I don't know what is wrong other than I need to exercise right now to get it moving. I know that realistically if I do what they tell me the weight will come off. I'm just worried that what if I'm the one oddball that doesn't? Just some pre-surgery jitters I'm sure, but I wondered if anyone else thought the same thing or is it just me?
  21. Bookworm, I have the same freak out thoughts...and I don't even have a surgery date yet. From what I've read in other posts, it seems pretty normal. And you know how tricky Water weight can be. It goes up, goes down, back up and then suddenly, you're down 5 pounds. Hang in there. Much luck and success to you! TPG
  22. From what I've read here, this is a very normal and common fear. I know I had it. "What if I fail at this too?" I've lost 63 lbs so far. Your weight loss will individual. But I would say if you follow the rules and do what your doc recommends...read all you can from the boards. You'll be fine and you will be a success. Right now, focus on the finish line not the many steps it takes to get there.
  23. jms...I didn't post that to insult you, just in case it seemed that way. I trust my doc a lot but he is a human. He also says "snacking will cause the band to fail" and I know from my readings on here of many successful bandsters who snack. In weight loss, as in life, so often there are no hard line, easy answers! HOWEVER...personally when I have allowed myself longer to eat, I find I tend to graze. I can eat a LOT more if I take longer. And I don't eat a whole steak...although if I took an hour I could probably get an 8 ouncer down. For a former grazer, that "small meals throughout the day" line of thought, or "3 small meals and a few snacks" thought, doesn't really work. I've tried it. My own personal best success I've found is when I (who am quite hard headed) have finally done what my Doc told me to do. So the advice my own surgeon gave me is NOT "malarky". It just may not work for you.
  24. The pre-OP liquid diet isn't intended for weight loss. It is intended to shrink your liver. The way it shrinks your liver is by depleting it of glycogen. Glycogen requires Water. So really, the bulk of the weight you lose will be water weight. While the minimal food intake will create a calorie deficit, it takes a colorie deficit of 3500 to lose a pound of actual fat. That means to lose 10 pounds of actual fat, you need a deficit of 35000 calories. It's highly unlikely that you create a calorie deficit of 2500 calories a day for those 2 weeks, and I definitely wouldn't recommend that you try.
