    Looking for advice

I was in a similar boat, had the band back in 11/2011, lost 70, then gained some back and then just couldn't lose anymore weight no matter what I did. So, I had the band removed and revised to RNY, wish I had done so sooner. Also, something they doesn't get discussed often, Your band could have some serious issues and you won't know unless they open you up. In my case, I had no *major* issues, I had some problems with certain foods, ut no slippage or erosion. Yet, when they went to remove the band for revision to RNY, the band was 100% encapsulated with scar tissue and took 3+ hours just to remove... So, you might not have any symptoms and you could have a ticking time bomb band in you, like I did.
  3. I had my gastric bypass revision on August 26, 2021 which was 3 days before Cat 4 Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans. I live just outside of New Orleans. Due to the hurricane, for several days, it was impossible to buy the food I needed. Everything was sold out. And Amazon isn’t able to deliver packages due to damages. Also I gained 12 lbs. following my surgery. I have not cheated on the diet and I’m hoping it’s fluid buildup. I have left my nutritionist many voice mails starting August 30. I have also left voice messages for my doctor. I haven’t heard from either one of them. Also when I was discharged, the nutritionist gave me a 5 page hand out. She didn’t explain anything. On the hand out it says what food I can eat but there is no mention of the amount. Is it a cup of bouillon or 3 tablespoons of bullion? I have no idea. Thanks for listening.

    Worried about approval process

Sorry to hear that. It's so frustrating how long things take, never mind throwing in office mistakes. And that seems like a big mistake on someone's part. It took me about a year to get my lap-band, and it will be just over 4 months process for the revision to sleeve. "Only" 4 months because I was already a patient in this Weight Center. Good luck

    BAND FREE! YES YES

@NewNewMe I was banded in 05 also. I also had a lot of damage from scar tissue, my surgeon couldn't even do the Sleeve revision at the same time as band removal. I am so thankful he was able to clear enough out, and that my stomach healed enough, that he was able to do the Sleeve. I hear that a lot of doctors wont do the lapband anymore... I am surprised that any still do knowing the complication rates.
  6. Hello!! I had the lapband done in April of 2008. Starting weight 263, lowest weight 199 and current weight is 256. I have had numerous fills and unfills...atleast 5 total unfils. In April I had a total unfil, dr thought it was a slipped band and two weeks ago I had a my second fill and band is back to being inconsistant. I have always had hit or miss days....some days I can eat and some days I can't.I vomit alot due to food getting stuck. It's so frustrating and I am honestly sick of this lapband! I have had upper GI's(last one a year ago) in the past and supposedly everything is on the up and up. I have to wonder what all the vomitting has done to my body! So my question is...I am going in to my dr tomorrow, How do I suggest this revision to sleeve? Do I just come out and say I'm done with this band? I'm afraid of my Dr thinking I am giving up too easily...even though I think 4 years of constant issues and about 30 plus fills and unfills, daily vomitting is enough!! Also, one other question what is the difference between an upper GI and an endoscopy and should I be requesting these? thanks in advance

    6 month diet requirement

I'm a Lap Band revision ( I had the band for 10 years) and BCBS didn't require me to do the 6 month supervised diet. I'm due to be sleeved on 10/26 (can't wait!!!) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. Hello all, My name is Mook. I reside in Philly and I had lapband surgery 2/22/10. I was down 55lbs but I have been gaining most of it back. I have done some reasearch online about revisions and have been looking to now get a sleeve or sleeve plication. Any helpful tips, ideas, or suggestions would be very helpful. I plan on looking at as much information as I can on this site. I have also been looking at a lot of people on youtube as well, very helpful. Hope to speak with you all soon. Mook
  9. As an insurance professional You need to check couple things with new carrier 1- do they cover wls? If not they can deny all future care as related to a non covered service. that means complications, follow ups and re surgeries etc 2- they cover wls great - now what happens if I need a revision - do you cover 1 per lifetime and since I already had my 1 paid for by someone else - you won't pay ever again? 3- you cover wls, you're great no issues in future will cause me problems - but my surgeon is not in your network and I need to see him 4-5 times for first year. Sooooo what is your transitional care program look like and how do I apply. Transition care is a limited time plan where your surgeon will be paid as in network - your surgeon must also agree - and you won't get denied for out of network or have high out of pocket.
  10. I totally understand how you feel....I lived with a failed lapband for 3 1/2 years. I had so much pain from the band. While I was waiting for my insurance approval for a revision, I couldn't sleep for months because the tubing broke and was poking me everywhere. Now I have the sleeve and I LOVE it! The sleeve works.
  11. Wow Malcolm, that's a lot for one person to go through!! No wonder weight came back on. I'm sorry you had to experience all of that. That obviously took a huge toll on you, not only physically but mentally too. Welcome to the forum. You will get a lot of support here and probably a lot of your questions answered too. I'm glad you are taking action to get the revision!!!

    Confused by Consult

Can you consult with anyone else? There are huge differences between the two procedures. I have read several posts on here about folk’s revising the sleeve. If you don’t stick to the guidelines you can just eat less crap and still regain the weight. Tmw my con worker is going from sleeve 8 yr ago to a RNY. The doctor should really be looking at all of your needs and concerns to help you decide what is best for you.
  13. G'Day all I have a site with my lapband story on it , I haven't updated it in years but here is a link to my story and how I did back then , and you will see some pic's of my journey along the way also. I have been involved in some research also and in doing so found out that the band starts to have problems between 6 and 8 years I did well to get mine to last 11 years all be it that it failed a few years earlier but stuck it out as long as I could with no Insurance till my wife got a great firm to employee her, we have Empire Blue / bluecross-blueshield I didn't know how bad my band was till late 2009 when I was being treated for a knee and lower back problem and was at physical therapy doing exercise for it and pulled my right knee up into my chest and got a sharp pain, ended up in the Er with my gallbladder being removed 2 hernia op's followed a couple of weeks later then lower back surgery for a cystic growth, and then my hiatus hernia-lapband revision all in one, yep I had a very busy 7 1/2 months with 7 op's and also angiogram for a chest pain, and endoscopy & colonoscopy in there to. Yep my wife for a while was seeing me less than the hospital nurses she said. LOL, I'll make this work every bit as well as my lapband did. Cheers mal www.lapbandtransformation.com
  14. Welcome to our site Malcolm...there are many people on her that have had revision surgery from Band to Sleeve, there's even a thread just for Band to Sleeve revisions. Take a look at the posts there...Very informative! I came on here looking for answers since I was going to actually have the Band done, but after reading all the post and understanding the complications of the Band, I have decided to have the Sleeve surgery. I'm still in the process of getting approval and all my paperwork together so I cant really answer your questions, but I have a question for you, if you dont mind..... If you do, it's understandable! If you were so successful on the band, how/why did you gain so much weight back? Stacy
  15. Firstly - best of luck on your upcoming surgery I am a band to sleeve revision too.... I had my band placed nine years ago and had my revision on the 5/4/12. I was also self pay and was told I might have to have a double surgery by one surgeon but his reason was weak spots on my stomach (from the band) that might cause leaks. He never mentioned scar tissue problems. The surgeon I ultilmately selected had the same concerns, but part of his pre-op testing was to do an endoscope to make sure there were no weak spots from the band before we did surgery. (and found none) After surgery, he did tell me that I had a lot of scar tissue, but from a hiatal hernia repair I had three years ago. He never mentioned scar tissue around the band. My surgery took an additional hour to clean up the scar tissue, but no problems and I received my sleeve. He tested for leaks during surgery and then again two days after surgery and none were found. So it appears the scar tissue didn't effect the sleeve. I think I am healing on schedule.... everyday day gets better Sorry for being long winded...... just wanted to share my story in hopes it might give you a bit of encouragement for you upcoming revision.

    Galbladder?

Hi all, Does anyone have experience with having their gallbladder removed at the same time of initial surgery or revision? How did it go and how are you feeling now? Recovery? Found out today I have gallstones so hoping they can remove it at the same time so I don't have to go under twice. Thanks!

Thinking about getting my band removed

@@B_heezy12 I'm sorry to hear about all the troubles you have experienced, but I wouldn't take anything off the table when thinking about a revision. The best advice is to find a surgeon that you trust and have a nice long conversation with them about what your experiencing, and how you feel. Ask them their advice, don't let them make you feel like you HAVE to revise to another surgery but get the information so you can make an informed decision for yourself. Either way if you decide to take the band out, keep the band, revise or no the best person to talk to is a surgeon you are totally comfortable with. See if you can make an appointment not just for an exam or a fill but a comprehensive consultation and evaluation appointment. Make a list of all the side affects that you have experienced, add in the pro's and con's about being banded and keeping the band or losing it. How you feel about revision, and any questions you might want to ask about anything and bring that all with you to the appointment. I wish you all the best!!! Let us know how your doing!!
  18. I had my band removed at 4pm on a Monday and was back at work (desk job) on Wednesday. My surgeon refuses to do single surgery revisions due to the leak issues connected with scar tissue. He said since I'm a revision, he cleaned my scar tissue up completely and I have to wait 3 months for my revision so I can be totally healed. The worst part of the removal was that the port site was sore for a week. I had it out April 9 and even my scars are about healed. I'm just trying to not gain anymore weight (I have gained almost 30 pounds over the last year, the most being since my total unfill in December--I honestly think when the band doesn't work for you, it works against you...). I think my metabolism is finally getting back to normal. Good luck to you!
  19. any body have there band replaced verses port revision
  20. I haven't had my surgery yet, but I too am having band to sleeve revision on Oct 1. Have you tried popsicles and SF Jello? Also my doc's first week diet says Clear Liquids, and not to be too concerned that first week with the Protein thing, just getting in your 64 oz of liquids and get the swelling down. His 2nd week is full liquids and this is where he says we need to start working on the protein requirement. Of course you need to do what your doc says..

    Sleeve or lap band

I am hopefully revising to the band in the next month (last visit on Friday, then praying I get approval). I've had the band since 2010. I did well in the beginning with no fill. Then I stopped losing and tried getting fills, I started losing again but only because I really couldn't eat anything until late afternoon, even then i would still vomit things up at dinner. I never was able to find my sweet spot. I had my fill removed and by the time I got courage to go back to my surgeon I am the same weight as where I started . I did not originally want the sleeve or bypass because of the risks, but I know I need it now, so I'm willing to risk it. My coworker has the band and she lost weight and was even under weight, but I think she keeps hers tight as I see her eating soft foods at work a lot of the time (I could be wrong). But now she's gained some weight back too and seems to be struggling to lose it again. It's all up to you, but from my experience I would not recommend the band to anyone. Insurance And Band Removal ?

I believe a lap band revision to gastric sleeve is considered one WLS procedure. They take the band out, let the stomach rest and heal and then convert you to a gastric sleeve in October. Insurance would be billed for the procedure in full at the time the revision is completed. I would call your insurance company just to get a clear understanding.
  23. I met a nice couple at our last Bandster support group dinner. He has just been banded and she is scheduled for December. She mentioned that the nurses at their doctor's office said they don't mention exercise to the patients. "Why ever not?" I asked. The answer was, "Because it makes them MAD." It would seem that some people think the band should do all the work for them. They maintain that if they had wanted to exercise, they wouldn't have gotten the band in the first place. I'm wondering if this is a common thing, and is the doctor to blame, for not giving his patients a more in-depth, realistic idea of what band success really is? I think (and this is just my opinion) that those who are unwilling to put forth ANY effort - revise their food choices, exercise, etc - should consider a different type of WLS. Is that "wrong thinking" on my part? I just hate to see people fail and blame the band, although I know that sometimes it is the other way around.

    Where Were You Sleeved

My surgeon was Dr Alberto Aceves. He has done over 6,000 WLS procedures including the band. He has done more than 1500 sleeves. I did not have a band revision, but when I was in the hospital, there was a patient who had just had one by him. She looked great.
  25. @@MinaDina I am a very social person and like to be surrounded by friends and energy.... and yet sleeve post op in 2011, I pretty much wanted to be alone. In January of this year I had to do a plastic surgery related "revision" and went alone. I sometimes got bored, but was surprised that I didn't really get lonely. I had a couple of emergency room trips this year (don't ask!) and also found that I really didn't want my grown kids around me - I was in a lot of pain and feeling like I needed to mask it for other people was stressful. So, there are some benefits of doing this solo! You might find that you do okay... and it seems to me you have pretty much ruled out the obvious suggestions (support group, or meeting people via Facebook or meetups etc).
