    Pre Op Diet

Hello all. I am scheduled for my banding on Nov 20th with Dr. Quilici in Burbank, CA. I just started on my liquid diet yesterday after my McDonalds Breakfast. I figure McDonalds helped get me into this jam, it was only fitting that they send me off. I haven't had my nutrition appt at my surgeons office yet (Friday) or gotten the official 2-week diet info in the mail. Based on reading this board about what other's 2-week diets consist of, I have a feeling I am in for a rude awakening about what I can and can not eat. For the past 24 hours I have been having low-fat yogurt, low-fat Soup (with stuff in it), crystal light, and soda (I am not ready to give up Diet Coke until the last second). Anyway just checking in. Look forward to keeping track with this board.

    Hungry, 3 days out

I had surgery on May 29th. I was on broth and Jello for 4 days. I am a week and a day out. Currently I can eat soup including cream soups, no chunks, cottage cheese, yogurt, string cheese (which I thought was odd and have not done). I was hungry on the broth and jello but since transitioning to the 5-14 day phase I haven't been hungry. Can you not have any food until June 17th?

I want it out! Frustrated and depressed...

I know for me the hardest part was not stress eating, and I'm scared that will be the same thing once I have it out... and I am determined to have the dang thing out. Per the doctor I tried a solid food (small frozen bean burrito), and it ended up getting stuck/I got sick, even with no Fluid in my band. So it's back to yogurt and tea for me at this time... I did indeed have a fantastic weekend though, so that didn't get me down at all. Husband was out of town, so I had my best friend over and we did nails, updated my Etsy Shop, and I did about 16 hours of yard work! Spring is finally peeking its head out, and that is thrilling I'm not sure about revision to the sleeve. I have two friends who have done wonderfully with it. I'm just scared of the prospect of another surgery - they (the doctors) were initially wanting me to do a bypass, but I have friends and coworkers who have had nothing but trouble with that, so that's why I opted for the band figuring it was less invasive and therefore less problematic. We'll see, though. I hope you have a fantastic week. I'm on track for 20 hours of Overtime this week, so at least being busy keeps me from being overly emotional and freaking out about my band
  5. Kboo I am eating 3 small meals a day minus the snack most days. Some days I do have a snack such as 100 cal snack or yogurt. I really have not had the feeling of being full at all. I stop eating when I feel satisfied. My dr said I am learning very quickly and it takes most longer. I guess I'm happy about that! As I said, I am able to eat everything so far and I thunk it's because I chew chew chew!! I do not want to get stuck! I'm sure it's a learning process that I will get down and I know we all have our own journeys with the band. Thanks for your info

    5 Days Post surgery

Ok so # 1 relax. Everyone is different , and although surgeons usually give you a schedule to follow post op, some people do things a little differently. I do not think it will hurt you to try and eat some mushies if you feel like you can handle it. However I would be careful on the things you are choosing. Gravy is high in fat and very heavy which is probably not a good choice. I started mushies about a week out, but I ate things like cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, yogurt. I would try things like that, stay away from high calorie things such as gravy, they will not help you calorie wise. Good luck to you , keep us posted!

    Pre-op diet

I am on day 9 of 15. My surgery is on 4/27. My pre-surgical diet includes 4 Protein shakes a day, and a choice of 5 of the following: 1/2 cup of natural applesauce; 1/2 cup of cream of wheat or regular oatmeal; 1/2 cup of a creamed soup - low fat, made with water; 1/2 cup of sugar free pudding; or 1/2 cup fat free yogurt. I do like unjury shakes - I am just getting tired of them, but they do taste good I like the chocolate best. I wish I had the diet with the meat and vegs --- the breakfast sounds wonderful, I would so love an egg for breakfast!

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

I agree with the others. The best advice that my sister (who had her surgery three weeks before mine) gave me was to chew, chew and chew some more. Take your time and stop eating if it starts to hurt. You will learn your limits as you go. I found that black pepper was the culprit in my case and I stopped adding it to my food until 3 months after the surgery. Chicken, meat and eggs were particularly difficult for me. Yogurt (low fat) was my go to food. Also try to avoid drinking water for at least half an hour after you eat. It will be difficult at first but it will get better. Hang in there!
  9. I am starving tonight. I am allowed 3 protein shakes, 2 salads, and one yogurt. Does it get easier?

    1 Week Post-Op

I am in the same boat as you are. you have no idea how much I can't wait for mashed potatoes when I can start the very soft foods next week. I am already thinking about what I will have when I can start real food.... Grocery shopping yesterday was hell, the smell of that fried chicken in the deli.. but I was good, got soup, yogurt, jello and milk.

    Struggling too

One of the best pieces of advice I've been given is "Before you eat something bad, eat something good". What that meant was, don't force yourself to choose between starvation and eating junk. If you're hungry, eat - but eat something protein rich and nutrient dense. Allow yourself to eat when hungry, just eat on-plan rather than choosing candy or chips. So a eat a cup of light yogurt rather than ice cream. Eat a serving of string cheese rather than chips. Eat a protein bar (with good nutritional composition) if you're in a situation where you can't take the time to eat something more substantial. A boiled egg with salt and pepper is a filling snack. Sugar-free pudding can quiet a sweet-tooth. You have to plan ahead to make sure you have something on-plan to eat. Because if you're like me, if you wait until you're starving, you'll eat whatever is close at hand. Don't beat yourself up, there's a learning curve to this. It will take some time to incorporate your new eating habits into your daily life. Persistence is more important than perfection.
  12. In my opinion no. My doctor never told me to count Cal's. They also know I have Greek yogurt for Breakfast. There's difference however between low fat yogurt and milk, ice cream, McDs milkshakes.
  13. Thanks, All. Regaining is my new fear. I’m not a daytime grazer. My problem area is when I walk in the door from work. Instead of sitting down for an actual meal, I pick and pick and pick. I know I need to stop that. I’m going to try having a late afternoon snack like a yogurt or protein bar to keep from being so hungry when I walk in the door. I agree...it’s so easy to say, “I’ll get back on track tomorrow.” Another habit to stop. And the list continues...!
  14. Because any diet (IMO) is basically a short term strategy. Obviously WLS is not a short term thing. It’s a life time decision and commitment and the surgery is still a tool. For me my main issue was portion control so the sleeve made sense to me. Can I still graze all day if I choose to? Yes. But that’s what it boils down to – I’m choosing whether I want to eat constantly or not. My doc wants his patients on 3 meals a day with no snacks. He didn't even want me doing 3 meals and a protein shake. In the early months there was simply no way I could eat enough to cover my protein needs over the course of 3 meals. I've kind of gone back the basics this week. Eating smaller portions and more of them throughout the day. The things I'm eating are good options, though, such as chicken salad, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. You can't look at it as being a diet. It truly is a lifestyle change. So what do I mean by that? Well for me that meant giving up lots and lots of old habits. It was a daily stop by the gas station for my giant Diet Mt Dew and some pretzels or granola bar. A few times here and there grabbing fast food because I had errands to do after work and wouldn't be home for hours. Now I only stop by the gas station if I actually need to eat because I'm away from home. Instead of getting junk food now I get some beef jerky and maybe some peanuts. And yes, it's a battle some times to avoid drifting into the other sections and getting something I shouldn't. That's the lifestyle change. I went through all of this for a reason and I don't want to throw all the benefits away. In my early 20s I got up to 395lbs. It scared me to know how close I was to being 400lbs. Started going to the gym and started to lose some weight. Then I lived at the gym for the next year or two and got down to 265lbs. And then some nerve problems kept me away from the gym and the weight came back on. Then I quit smoking and added some more weight. Then I got a desk job. So here I was years later back up to 355lbs and feeling miserable. I felt out of options and that's why I went with surgery and glad I did. It isn't for everyone and God knows there are thousands and thousands of people out there that have lost weight by dieting alone. It's good that you're asking these questions. Honestly it's the ones that think they're going to wake up with a smaller stomach after srugery and all their food issues and addictions magically go away.

    I'm too tight

Please don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like you are eating all the wrong stuff. Pizza, breaded chicken, and tostadas would do the same thing to me. Now that you threw up you should do liquids for a day and then work your way slowly to more solid stuff. I keep my band pretty tight, so the things I eat may differ from others. Usually the most solid stuff I eat is fish or chili. Pizza and tostadas fall into the bread group for me and I just can not eat them during this weightloss phase. I eat things like yogurt, cottage cheese .......... You can not figure out if you are too tight eating that kind of stuff. after you do liquids for a day or so, then mushies, see if you can eat some chicken or tuna salad. If you can eat 1/2 cup, then you are not too tight.
  16. I know what you mean! Sometimes with me I can have just a little yogurt, maybe 1oz, and it seems to sit with me all day. Other days I can have 2-3oz of yogurt during the morning and by the evening I can have another 2-3oz and it doesn't feel full at all. Sleeves are finicky creatures

    4 Days Post Op

I had surgery on May 2nd. Anytime I drank or moved, my stomach was roiling with acid and gas. I called it my witch's cauldron. I was concerned as I saw so many that didn't seem to have this issue after surgery. Once I got to week 2 with full liquids (yogurt, protein shakes, etc.) and I could consume more items of substance, this improved greatly and is now not an issue. Hopefully yours will improve too.

    Encouragement

Thanks everyone. Thankfully the travel is a once a year thing and the rest of the year I work from my home site. I did bring protein drinks and bars so I tried to use those for meals as much as I could. I mostly stuck to chicken when we went out, had a burger without the bun one night as well. I just dislike not having that control over my meals. It's nice to have someplace to come to for encouragement from people in my shoes. Some of the people I traveled with know, some don't but none of them have first hand experience. I'm back to my yogurt, protein drinks, lean protein and cheese for my meals. I did avoid the pizza and opted for some tuna instead

    Post surgery struggles

I recently had a tough few weeks. I was eating more carbs and snacking at night and doubled my calories. To get back in control I just took it a day at a time and tried to see patterns that hurt me. For example at night my snacks were yogurt and cheese, things that leave room for more snacking. I switched to 2-3 ounces of deli turkey and now I’m too full to eat more. Same with meals, if you start with 3 or so ounces of dense protein it’s really tough to eat much else. I also ramped up the exercise a lot by taking up jogging and some longer bike rides. some guidance / rules from my program: eat protein first, then veggies and few or no carbs. For snacks only have protein, if protein doesn’t sound good then it’s just head hunger, no drinking within 30 mins of eating, get 60+ grams of protein a day and 64 oz water, only have lean protein and track everything. Stalls are super common and expected.
  20. I was banded on the 8th and not really hungry. I sip on the protein shakes pretty slowly. In the morning I make a big one with protein powder, scoop of Greek yogurt, skim milk, banana, and fish oil (you can't taste it). It has 36 g of protein in it and I sip on it all morning. For lunch I have creamed soup, and later for dinner a low carb slimfast chocolate shake. I have sugar free drinks, jello, and popsicles for in between, so I haven't experienced any real hunger pains yet. I am sure that eventually this is going to get really, really old. Just glad my dr. is only making me do the liquids for 2 weeks, then on to mushy foods.

    Protein help!

Things have changed a whole lot since my surgery in 2010! The diet plan I had to follow was one Ensure Protein [and I am know it was not the 30gr/carton variety] and water. That was it. On the hour, 2 oz of protein then 2 oz of water every 15 minutes. I even bought a set of eight pretty 2 oz shot glasses that my husband would use for my meals. At the top of the hour, he brought me one with protein and three with water. Start over at the top of the hour and continue until you went to bed. Slider foods, those that are pureed like mashed potatoes, canned refried beans, tuna with mayo, hot cereals, etc were for weeks 4-6 back then. Of course every practice has their own requirements and so much has changed. To up your protein, add some to your cereals or your yogurt. They make flavorless proteins. Find the protein that you can tolerate. Also, you can look into the clear liquid proteins that are out there. Many companies make them. Stalls are your body's way of trying to figure out just what you are trying to do to it. It naturally does not want you to starve to death so it will hold onto those pounds for as long as it can. Then, you will suddenly lose two pounds overnight, lose for a while and then begin another stall. This is the first of many stalls - just keep doing what you are supposed to be doing and don't let that stall get to you. Yes, that is hard, the "not letting it get to you" part. Remember that your surgery is just another tool in your toolbox and not a magic bullet. For the constipation, which is really common after this surgery because of the high protein intake, I would add Miralax to your water or any liquid or hot cereal. One capful mixed in 8 oz of water, for example. You won't know it is there. I now mix one capful of Miralax with my morning decaf coffee. You could also add stool softener as well. If after adding those, and not getting relief, absolutely speak with your surgeon. There are prescription meds out there that can help.

    ugh....protein shakes

http://www.hoab.org/...rotein-sources/ Theres a link from my Nut she just posted Monday...maybe it'll help. "Can you still get enough Protein in while choosing meatless options? Yes, you absolutely can! There are lots of meat-free protein sources that can help you get the nutrition that you need without meat. Some of the best meat-free protein sources include eggs, low-fat or fat-free dairy products such as milk, yogurt, Greek yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese, Beans, nuts, nut butters and soy products, such as tofu, edamame, soy nuts, and soy milk."

  24. I'm August 7th too! I have trouble getting PMs. They don't show up on my phone. But I'd love to keep in touch here. I'm day 7 of the liquid diet. No solids not even yogurt. I've sort of adjusted but last night my family ate in front of the TV and I just had my shake and I just wanted a piece if cheese or a carrot. So hard! I get full liquids after surgery so I'm looking forward to cream of mushroom soup with the mushrooms strained out.
