If I knew then what I know now...

Hi justme55, I had complications from my rny also, including running temperatures of 105 just days after surgery, I had several leaks in my new stomach pouch and small intestine. I ended up with Peritonitis and a 6 week stay in the hospital then 3 months of bedrest with feeding tube, chest tube and abdominal drain. 1 year later it seems like it was a bad dream. Yesterday I just hit 134 lbs when I started at 284. I still have problems with eating certian items (making me throw up) and the list is growing, I know that greasy food like chinese or spicy like bbq are a definate nono. Plus all beef items and most pork are on nono list. Onestradon is a generic for Zofran and is my best friend. 2 tablets in the morning when I feel nausea and it keeps me from hurling. Sending all the gentle hugs your way for your journey. Just let me know if youneed to talk.

    One Month Post Op Update

    1. With the sleeve you have to always be vigilant for the signs of GERD and act fast, 12 days, months or years down the road. 2. I drink at least 30oz before eating anything in the AM. Is a mixture of water, tea and coffee. Hydration goals are underrated. 3. Kept it a secret. I had very good reasons and still do but people want to know how I did it and I will tell strangers the truth if I think it will help them but say diet modifications to plain old nosey people. I feel deceptive, although technically it's the truth. 4. DRINK WATER. You skin will bounce back quicker. Detruction of brown adipose will happen faster. You will have more energy. Water (pure) is essential. Congratulations and safe journey!
  3. I am very confused. I am 7 days post-op. I am walking about 3 miles a day, in 3 20-minute increments. I am drinking my protein and eating 3 x’s a day. But I am in a constant state of feeling full and hungry and tired. Am I doing too much? Too little? They kept telling me if I walked more I would feel better after the surgery, but it just makes me hurt and more hungry. How can I tell when I eat too much? How can I tell when I’m really hungry? How can I tell when the pain is caused by doing too much? How can I tell if the unending tiredness is from not eating enough?
  4. I’m amazed that you can walk that much at 1 week! I’m only 4 days out and just today the fatigue and blah feeling just hit me hard!! I’d say relax on the exercise and take it easy. Your body has been through a major surgery. It needs rest.

    July 4th weekend so hard

I have been ok for the most part. I'm 3 days post op. I have these off and on belly pains gas? Rumblings. that make it hard to want food. However being around all the food the ribs, the brown sugar baked beans, the hot dogs the ice cold apple cider gives me a tiny pinch of sadness. But i know this time next year I will be quite fabulous so it's worth it.
  6. Congratulations!!! So glad you are doing so well!!! I would love to follow your blog. That is a great idea. 3 more days till I am banded!!!! Come on Wednesday!!!!
  7. Hi, Everything is going pretty well accept for occasional acid reflux and it is always in the middle of the night. The reflux occurs in my sleep waking me up gagging with the most horrible hot burning feeling to my throat and sinus. Not sure if it is related to Iron pills, or drinking coffee again. It is not every night but at least once a week. Thinking I am going to begin sleeping with lots of pillows to prop up. So scary and painful. Wondering if any of you have had this happen, what have you done?

    Swimming

When your Dr gives you the OK for swimming I hope you'll like it as much as I do ! I started taking a hardworking water fitness class after i was banded and oh boy, what a workout !There are all shapes and sizes in the class, so I didn't care what others thought about me. Its very easy on my joints but you're definetly working out ! It helped me drop 50 lbs in the first 7 months and I continue to go 3x a week, down 64 lbs total , 20 more to go ! Hopefully you'll love it too !

    Swimming

I'd call your doc. Mine is 14 days post-op. I went swimming yesterday but I'm 4 weeks post op Monday. Your doc could be different though, he could be 2-4-6-8 weeks, it's just hard to tell! Good luck!!
  11. So friends I just finished my last nutrition visit on Monday, I had to do total of six once a month 30 days apart. Now I'm playing the waiting game and just want the day to come. I did get to go to my first support group Tuesday and it was really great to be around people that understood me. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

    Tylenol?

I typically take Tylenol unless I have a very high fever or intense pain. My surgeon said I can take 1 (200mg) Advil, twice a day not to exceed 3 days and not on a regular basis.

    33 days!

OOHHHHH Damn.... Shiffe has gotten real..... 33 days away. Went for preo-op testing today. took them 3 HOURS to weigh me, draw 4 tubes of blood and put me on the EKG machine for 45 seconds (not joke). I also had the interview with the hospital nurse! So on Friday have my Physc exam, next week I have my nutritional class, then all that's left is final approval from my primary, last round of blood work, my upper GI and my finial weigh in. I hope like hell the 3rd time is a charm, cause I don't want to repeat this process again!

Just curious!! When I finally got my date I was sooooo excited but, as it gets closer I'm getting really nervous!! I have to have an EGD on Friday!! 16. Hi, I'm McButterpants and I'm a coffeeholic. I was self-pay, so I have a surgeon and what I call my local doc that is a bariatric surgeon that is providing my aftercare. The two are polar opposites when it came to reintroduction to food - the local doc being much more conservative than the surgeon. My surgeon required me to be caffeine free when he operated. I struggled with caffeine withdrawal, but go thru it and 2 weeks before surgery I was caffeine free. My local doc said no caffeine for 2 months, then we would address it. The reasons she gave me for no caffeine directly after surgery is the diuretic affect of the coffee, so you can get dehydrated quickly - a real issue right after surgery. Also the acid on caffeinated coffee can upset your new tummy. I honestly had one cup of real coffee per week before my two months was up - coffee helped me with some mild constipation and it always worked when other things didn't. At my two month meeting with the local doc she approved ONE cup of real coffee per day and made me pinkie promise to not go back to my old habit of 3-4 cups per day. It was a good compromise. Most days I only have one cup of real coffee. Best of luck you to you my fellow coffee-lover! Bean on.
  17. I think it depends on ur surgeon. Mine said coffee was fine after 8 weeks but to try and limit it to 2 cups per day and to continue to drink plenty of water.

    This is new

I received a fill in July of this year. I had not received one since November of 2007. (That's when I thought I was a know it all and could do it myself. I was losing weight and didn't need support - of any kind) Boy I was I wrong. I had dropped 30 pounds in 2007 since my surgery in July of 2006, but when I decided to get my a$$ together I was 10 heavier. In April of 2009 you could say I was reborn. I decided that I did need help—OF ANY KIND! I started searching the web, keeping a food journal, joined a support group and went to see my doctor (for the first time since 11/07). I rec’d a fill in July, the doc and I thought there was only 7cc in but we soon found out I had 8cc. He added only .5cc but it was enough. It took a good 2 weeks before I could really feel the restrictions. I’ve always been tight in the morning but now it’s a bit more. I drink before I eat to help loosen things up. I can only eat half of what I used to in the morning and I’m hungry w/in an hour. This is new; Yesterday I became concerned while trying to eat my lunch: [/b]:%20void(0);"]Mission Tortillas - Yellow Corn Tortillas - Super Size (Approx 6.5"), 1 tortilla [/b]:%20void(0);"]Cheese - Cheddar, 0.5 oz [/b]:%20void(0);"]Lettuce - Iceberg (includes crisphead types), raw, 0.5 leaf outer [/b]:%20void(0);"]Sun Vista - Black Beans -- No Salt Added, 0.025 cup [/b]:%20void(0);"]Taco Bell - Taco Sauce - Medium, 1 tbsp I started having heart palpitations after having 3 bits. I put my hand on my chest and could feel it move. It didn’t last long but boy is was scary. I waited a few minutes and it stopped and I was able to finish my taco. I had another taco for dinner and didn’t have any problems. I get stuck more often now I’ve noticed too. I need to remember to chew, chew, chew.

    3 Months Post Op

Hi, Yes to the PPI 30 min before Breakfast. Also, Carafat (sp) which I forgot about and better put the bottle on the nightstand. I see the surgeon for 12 week post op on, 9/21. And last night I slept propped up and did not have any issues. Thanks BP Fam!

    grr

I so hear you! I am soo incredibly lazy and it pisses me off that I am like this! I havent gone to the gym in a few weeks and I have absolutely no excuse. Except this week since my daughter was off school I couldnt go with her. I'm going to start again tomorrow when she is at school ... but yes, its so easy to get frustrated with ourselves when we know we need to be doing something and we're not ... good luck to you and hopefully we both will get back to work on this!

    Bumpy, ropey incisions?

Cheryl Ann, I think that is probably normal (but I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on the internet ). I am almost 3 months post op and my scars are still a bit bumpy/ropey feeling. If you are concerned about this once your steri strips are off and they are definitely healed up (ie: no open spots to them) if you pick up from a health store Arnica Montana cream and rub it on them daily, being sure to really rub it in - it will make a world of difference in how your scar appears in the long run. The cream doesn't smell oh so pretty but it's worth it.

    120 lbs and plication?

Here's my info straight forward: Plication with Dr. Watkins on 12/29/2010 Total loss (including the 2 week pre-op liquid diet): 31 pounds (8 weeks total) Total to loose: 125 pounds I was NOT told I had too much to loose for plication and I feel fantastic. I have no regrets. Good luck with your decision!

    "cauliflower" Potato Soup

I was wanting warm comfort food tonight. softened 1/2 an onion, chopped fine in a tablespoons of olive oil. Add a lb bag of cauliflower florets, 4 cups of Water and 1 stock packet (the concentrated stuff) add 1 cup of milk when soft Add salt, pepper and some garlic once tender, pureed until smooth with the stick blender (You could leave it chunky if you want) I split the recipe in 1/2 at this point pot 1: added 1 bag of jimmy dean turkey sausage crumbles and some crushed red pepper flake pot 2: added about a cup of 2% cheese (mix of swiss and american), 12 oz of low sodium lean ham cubed up, 3 slices of turkey bacon (cooked and crumbled) Both are so yummy! I can't decide which I like more. I despise cauliflower and potato Soup is something I absolutely adored previously (we didn't do tomato soup when you were sick, we did potato soup!). I'm very happy with this replacement! I haven't run them through sparkpeople yet for for calories, fat, Protein, etc.
