  1. Anybody ever had this done? I am sure the price is dependent on how much you get done and where it is, but any info you can pass along would be appreciated. This is my planned reward for losing the weight. And as incentive to keep working at it, I am going to get started now on saving! WEEE! :ban: Just wondering how much that will have to be. :nervous

    Menopause

Hi, I'm post-menopausal and somewhat of a lightweight too. My surgery date BMI was 35.8. I have lost 10% of my body weight in the first month followiing surgery and I am on track to lose another 10% by the end of month 3. I'm happy with my weight loss. I have seen others losing a lot more, but I'm not sure of their BMI. And I've seen some people losing less. For me the surgery is a huge success. I already feel so much better and I'm thrilled to be in regular sizes and shrinking at a pretty good clip. Lynda

    goal reachers

I want to know how does your body know when you have reached your goal weight and how do you stop losing weight at that point?
  5. I know it's frustrating to read about people who seem to be losing HUGE amounts of weight in the first month or two, if you're not one of them. But honestly, there are so many factors that go into how much you'll lose and how fast. Men lose faster (damn them!). People with a higher starting BMI lose faster. Younger people seem to me to lose faster. People who didn't have a larger pre-op loss seem to lose faster initially (because the first 10 pounds of any weight loss is mostly water). Some people who are losing faster may be losing muscle mass as well as fat, which will slow down their weight loss later (because muscle mass makes your resting metabolism higher). And some people stall earlier, some people stall later. What's important to remember is, you will lose the weight. It may take longer to come off for some of us (I lost about 15 pounds the first month, 10 the second, and 7 so far in the 3rd month), but it's going to come off, and it will come off consistently, without you feeling like you're starving all the time, and it's going to stay off. Yes, maybe you've been on crash diets where you lost faster, for a little while, and how long did that last? Stick to your surgeon's plan, give your body the liquids and protein it needs (you want to keep the protein up so you maintain muscle mass, which will keep your metabolism from slowing down), take a deep breath, and remember it's not a race, and it's not a diet. This is for the rest of your life. You want to be learning good eating and exercise habits, and learning how to live with your new sleeve and eat for life, not live to eat. And if you're still feeling like a slow loser, check out this thread on slow users unite - you're in good company, and it's full of people who are successful sleevers! http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/11308-the-good-thing-about-being-a-slow-loser/
  6. Hello! I understand your frustration. I, too, was a very slow loser for the first month. If you keep your Protein and Water intake where it should be, the weight will eventually begin to melt away. I'm almost 11 mos. post op and have lost about 80 lbs since my day of surgery. Even at a month post op I seriously questioned my ability to shed the pounds other VSG patients do. While others were losing 20+ lbs per month, I was losing 5-10. In the end, I couldn't be happier and I know you will feel the same next summer! Best wishes on your journey. Lisa
  7. I am quite the newbie here. I know, know, know we aren't to compare weight loss with others, but I do have a question. I had my surgery on 8/25. I am only down 7lbs. I have to admit, I am let down over this. I was expecting a bit more. I am still on the full liquid stage. I do get about 75-80oz of Water in and I try to get my Protein. Most days I can only manage 50gr. I walk on the treadmill 15-20min a day. I have a couple of friends that have had RNY. They said I need to up my protein. Last night in a panic I choked down another Protein shake. I took in a total of 85gr of protein yesterday. I stepped on the scale this morning and was up .5lbs. I am not trying to compare, just wondering of this is normal for some and should I be worried? I am still having the "what have I done" thoughts. This isn't helping. Thanks in advance for the help.

    Trouble Sleeping

My sleep pattern has changed drastically after surgery, too. I now go to bed at midnight and I'm always awake between six and seven am. Pre-op, I was always super tired, even when driving. I do have sleep apnea that I started using bi-pap for about 2 weeks prior to surgery, so I'm not sure if the need for less sleep is because of the bi-pap or because of weight loss. Either way, I'll take it. I'm more productive and energetic now than I have been in years!
  9. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone. So yesterday, I had a breakdown. Crying and all. I have not had qualms or fears until the last few days. I knew that would happen. My son (22) is having this with me and he admitted to a little fear about the anesthesia and he is one who claims no fear to anything, ever. So, the closer you get to it, the more your fears start emerging. I'm afraid I will be a basket case as they are prepping me for surgery and hopefully they will give me something for the crazies. I had a hysterectomy in 2007 using just a spinal (which I requested) and happy juice. No fears, no intubation and I don't remember the surgery at all, just one or two flashes, because I just slept. I wish they would do that for this. It's funny how you missing eating. Not the food itself, really, just the eating it part. For me anyway. We were Skyping with our family in Connecticut last night so we could be together for Christmas eve (we have no one here in our new state of Nevada and we are really not even celebrating this year what with the surgery and the expense of it and all, it is kind of lonely ), but I kept asking everyone to eat things in front of the camera so that I could watch their enjoyment. Living vicariously through Skype! Sad. I was also thinking about my sleeping arrangements for the next week or so after Thursday. My bed is very high and my sofas are very low. Here is me; climbing up to get into bed or pulling myself up off the sofa, which will be easier? Oh, the dilemma. It has been tough. We've been living paycheck to paycheck since I don't have a job here in the state with the worst unemployment. I'm hoping to start CNA training after I lose some of my excess weight and hopefully get back some energy. I would like to be able to help people and give back to my community and if I can get paid doing it, that will be great. I am not sure what the job market is for CNAs here, but when I look for listings for the jobs, it says they're available. I am normally a secretary, but those jobs, while out there, have so many applicants for each, it is a very tough market. Well, I have probably rambled enough. Good luck to all of us preoppers and once again, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

    50 and fabulous

I'm going on 50 this September....I won't get to my goal weight by then or probably won't even be started with the surgery. I'm also looking forward to being stronger and healthier. I want to be able to not run away when I see my reflection in a mirror or a picture. Good luck to you on your adventure. Let's chat some time. Do you chat on Yahoo? Jodi

    Post- Op Diet

My surgeon had me on full liquids for two weeks pre- and post-op for four weeks total. The liquids were actually no problem post-op. I had so little hunger and so little room that I felt perfectly satisfied on liquids. The transition to mushies will be a huge leap room-wise and you will fill the difference big-time. In fact, I did half-mushies half-liquids to transition over. Surgeons' requirements (which vary quite a bit) help to ensure we don't damage our sleeves and that we determine what we can tolerate slowly as the sleeve heals. If you're handling liquids easily, then ask your surgeon if you can try to transition to mushies early. Most of us have no problems transitioning, but some do. It does seem like a long time to get back to 'real food', but it's very doable. We have plenty of fat stores in our body post-op to make up for the calorie deficit. Our heads tell us otherwise, which is why we packed on so many pounds over the years. It's very tough to fight the head hunger, but for the majority of us, it became much easier post-op. I'm six months out and I'm still not back entirely on regular foods, but it's fine. I have plenty to choose from and the weight loss has been fantastic! Best of luck on your surgery and hang in there!

Counting Sugar grams instead of Carbs?

I don't track anything except protein. I just add up my protein mentally through the day (egg 7, greek yogurt 20, chicken 10 etc). And then I eat whatever else-usually healthy but sometimes not-never very much. I cannot handle much without feeling quite sick. I have no nutritionalist visits because I traveled for surgery. I'm pretty much on my own, with my surgeon's instruction book and this forum. I literally have no idea how many Kcal I have in a day because I despise food tracking (altho I know it works to lose weight). Right now I'm actually trying to eat more to prevent anymore weight loss! If I start to regain I'll have to track more to get back on track.

    Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies?

funny you should mention it! i just bought it. i've already read LapBand for Life and another book I loaned to my mom (so she can understand this too). I also picked up K. Ali's book "Fighting Weight." I heard WLS for Dummies is a great tool!
  15. Go with the insurance. It will definitely help incase of complications. My insurance took into consideration my prior nutritionist and weight watchers visits also. So I applied for insurance for surgery. They told me that they need six months of nutritionist visits. I asked them if consultations with my physician ( every timeyou talk to him abt diet) and weight watchers will do. They said "yes" YAY! ... So my physician compiled a medical necessity letter ... I am completely healthy other then the weight... So basically he wrote that if she does not have the surgery she will be at a risk of blah blah blah ! And he also included a chart of my past two years visits and mentioned that everytime I met with him we spoke abt nutrition diet n weight... He also mentioned all the diets that I have tried. Then my coordinatir in the surgeons office filed it ( with all the other tests) and I heard from them witin a week that I was approved. I have been approved since March... But I too scared of having the surgery so I am taking my time. I have United Healthcare as my insurance. Hope it helps ????

    Wanted to say hello ....

Good luck John on you upcoming surgery. My insurance requires 6 months and I am in month two. I went to two weight loss surgery classes, two support group meetings and just had a Psych evaluation on Friday. I have a nutritionist apt on Oct 15th and a mandatory informational session with the Surgeon on the same date. Then I have to see the nutritionist 3 more times and one more surgery weight loss class. I am not looking to have the surgery approved until February 2014. I will be praying for your success and I will be following you.
  17. Hey everyone! I'm 21 years old from Canada and I have been looking into having RNY gastric bypass surgery in April and I'm currently going through the social worker and nutritionist. Here in Canada we have to go through a few process before the doctor lets us go through the surgery. I have been thinking about the long the effects this surgery will provide (good and bad) my mother supporters me but my dad doesn't want me to do it. I am currently 260 lbs height of 5'6. Any advice? I also have PCOS which makes it very difficult to loose weight and a long family history of diabetes so I'm afraid. Any one have advice about not all family members agreeing with the surgery? I'm also scared to tell my friends because I don't think they would understand

    Sleeve to Bypass

I am 2 weeks out from revision from sleeve to bypass. I can't attest to the weight loss yet, but feel I am recovering faster. It helped to know what to expect after but do find some big differences. Good luck and no GERD is amazing.

Kaiser SoCal veterans help me the Orientation

OMGosh! YOU ARE HILARIOUS! HAHAHAHA! And sound totally like me!! They tell EVERYONE they may not be approved...I didn't really actually believe I got through until a year later (this past June) when I finally went to the seminar where we met with the surgeons, since they always repeated "you may not get approved" over and over and over. I'm not saying it's 100% for sure for everyone, but I think they just really want you to be serious about the classes, surgery etc. And by the way I took my weight watcher logs as well, and they didn't even look at them :-( ...but you should still take yours just in case lol. But seriously I think once you get this far, your good.

    Compliments

WOW! Your weight loss is impressive! I have been banded for 7 months and loss 30 lbs since, and I agree it's hard to accept the compliments. The thing that really ticks me off...they guys who want to talk to me now that weren't interested before! :frown: Anyhow, keep up the good work! I can't wait until I get to a 70 lb weight loss.
  22. Hi everyone, i will be getting my first fill this morning and I know I will have a weight gain when I weigh in. I did great on liquids, mushies, etc. When I started solids, the scale didn't move then went up a little. I already feel like I'm failing with the lap band. I'm down 21 pounds including pre-op diet. Surgery was Nov 9th. I would really appreciate some feedback. Did anyone else have a gain before first fill?? I weighed 205 post op visit on 11/17. Am now 207. Ugh:bored: Thanks everyone.

    Pcos

OH MY GOSH AMY!!!! This is like such a coincedence!!! I just had a pap done 2 weeks ago and my testosteron level was elevated and I might just have PCOS!!! They Dr was very concerned cause I have gain 15 pounds in a 3 month time frame and it is also very hard for me to loose. I am hoping and praying that I dont have the pcos cause I want kids really bad!!! And so does my husband!! I am very concerned and worried. I don't know what to do. I feel like if I have the lap band surgery and loose this weight these issues will go away... NONE of these things started happening to me until I tipped the scale over 300!!! Did you start to grow body hair ... and I am constantly clearing my throat! I just want this all to end!
  24. Has anyone suffered a second round of hair loss!? I had the classic first round between approx months 3-7...just as I thought I was going to be completely bald it stopped...new hairs started coming through and I cut my hair short and took a huge sigh of relief I had survived! Lol! Hair much thinner but starting to recover. Now, at almost 14 months out from surgery it seems to have started again I realise that when the hair loss stopped around month 7/8 it stopped completely, I really wasn't losing any hair at all - and I know a certain amount of shed is normal - and now it's started again with a vengeance. I'm pretty sure it's not just a normal amount and I can already see the affects, particularly at the front of my hairline where it was really bad last time. If it carries on for the months it did last time I'm afraid I really will end up bald! Does anyone have any experience of this at this point or further from surgery? I'm getting all my protein/water, taking my vits, recently had bloods done and all good there, and although I still have weight to lose its not coming off at the moment, bee stalled for about 6 weeks.
  25. Can anyone tell me where I go to edit my profile?? Weigh day tomorrow and want to adjust my weight. Thrilled not to be hungry! [emoji38]
