    100 Lbs Down

I officially lost 100 lbs as of today! In the past, one of the things I was doing wrong trying to loose weight is first thing, I would run out and buy things. I would decide to try to loose weight so I would go out and buy some exercise equipment, some clothing or shoes, a gym membership, you name it and I would buy it. Unfortunately what it did was set me up for failure. I felt I was "accomplishing" something by making the purchase and inevitably I wouldn't follow through. So this time, one of the commitments I made to myself was to not run out and buy anything. Rather, I was going to use my purchases as rewards for reaching goals, instead of a means to reach a goal. My 100 lb goal reward is a new bicycle. I had mine stole a couple of years back. I really miss it. I had an Electra Black Betty. It was a cool retro cruiser; black with pink flames and rims. So I went to the shop I originally purchased my Betty from and they no longer stock the bikes, but will still order one for you. They handed me a 2010 brochure and I went to McAllisters Deli so I could get a glass of tea and enjoy picking my reward. (If you have never had McAllisters Ice Tea, it is wonderful, delicious) I start flipping through the brochure, loving each new bike on each page flip. Until, that is, I come across a huge picture of a Mammy doll. And the heading on the page is "Inspiration". Jesus, it's 2010! So anyways, now I sorta lost my excitement.

    I finally told my Mom!

I am glad you told her. Growing up i was a dancer and always in shape but still bigger than i should be. When i was diganosed with low thyroidism, high blood pressures, and PCOS i put on lots of weight. It was really hard for me i hated going to holidays b/c people would talk behind my back saying how much weight i have gained ( and they were all big themselves). When i was in the process of researching it my mom brought it up to me and thats when i chose to take the 1st step. I chose not to tell anyone , but my boyfriend and mother. Maybe some day in the future i will tell, but right now i will just enjoy it! Your mom will come around i promise!
  3. I have a friend who started exercising this month. she is going to a club, trying to go everyday. by the 2 week mark she hadn't noticed any weight loss, she became discouraged. thankfully she commented on FB & this is why I am starting the topic. One of her friends sent this message to her. Melissa wrote: "Jackie, stay with it. food Journal is a great idea, it's just simple math; Calories in-calories out=calories deficit. Livestrong.comhas a place to keep track of the food and the workouts, giving you an approximate idea of how many calories you've burned. What you're doing so far is great, adding some strength training in there will help a lot. When you have more muscle you burn more calories, even just sleeping. Strength training can be lifting weights, pilates, yoga, boot camp...something where you are taxing the muscles. Weight yourself once a week about the same day/same time...you will go up and down everyday a bit. But don't be so concerned about the weight, think about how your clothes are fitting you, even better take measurements of your waist, hips, thighs, and upper arms, monitor those. 1 pound of muscle and 1 pound of fat are the same weight...but muscle is much more dense, hence you may lose fat and gain muscle, but your clothes get looser. The best way to lose weight is 2 pounds per week, it's been proven that's the best way to keep it off. It didn't take you 1 month to put the weight on, it will not take you 1 month to take it off. And like I said have fun, don't get obsessive, just enjoy the day for what it is and the goal will come, you just have to keep working. It's fantastic that you feel better after only two weeks, enjoy that! Be Proud! You're doing great! Ask questions when you need to. Sounds like you have lots of support, that's huge...we are all routing for you! You've got this ROCK STAR! http://www.livestrong.com/" Do you have support? Do you accept support? Can you listen to that support, even when you don't want to? I love the support I get from this site. I don't know any of you but I feel encouraged and accountable. I feel that it is important to support each other, as most of us have only had criticism. I feel that it is important to enjoy each day for all the minutes I am given. I hope that I never forget the weight and inches I lose and forget who I am. Paying it forward is our responsibility. Can we really do this?
  4. I actually blogged about this just this morning because I'm like you, really really scared of when I wake up. No one except one that's been there knows what that first slam-you-on-the-ground flare is like. I was sick. Really sick. Vomiting, diarrhea, dizzy, in horrible pain that felt like someone poured acid in my body. So many things that just didn't make sense at all! No one knew what it was and it was terrifying to think to myself, and even tell the Doctors "you fools are going to let me die and a MEDICAL EXAMINER is going to diagnose me!" I cried so much that my kids started jokingly calling me "moaning myrtle" from harry potter. This went on for an agonizing 8 months and no one knew that I was suicidal. I'd made up my mind that if the next dr (I was sitting outside his office) didn't diagnose me, I was doing it on the way home. So yeah, I understand the emotional and physical sides of this. At my last rheumatologist appointment she said "Renee I'm sorry, we're out of options. We've done it all and this is as good as it's going to get" and to me, it just wasn't enough. It's not acceptable to me. SO...I made up my mind that even if it only made it easier to crawl to the bathroom on the bad days, I had to try. Some have the surgery for weight loss but to me it's secondary to maybe getting a part of me back. Even if I only get down to 150, if I'm a healthy 150 I couldn't care less! Mkay this was when I was a bit braver cause I was about a month away from surgery. Now, like you, I'm a few DAYS away from surgery and I'm not feeling so brave at all! LOL Will it be better in the long run? ABSOLUTELY! Will it suck more than most sleeves? PROBABLY! It's hard to tell someone to just do it and don't look back. Fibro hit me all over. Every muscle group but especially my sides and chest. Major muscle groups feel like someone poured acid into them. It burns horribly until I'm writhing and crying and incoherent with pain and nothing touches it. My sides? UGH! Those are more of a "charlie horse" / muscle spasm type pain. What's the first instinct? To throw yourself around like someone having a seizure, anything to stop that muscle from cramping and stretch it out. Try as I might, nothing helps. Those are the muscles that will be cut through during surgery and those are my most agonizing when they spasm. It takes my breath. Can I do this? yep. Will I do this? Yep. Because like I said before, THIS me is unacceptable and so I have to try. XOXO Renee`
  5. Wow, keep it up! Congrats on the awesome weight loss! Look forward to keeping up with your journey.

    Struggling

Thank you ladies, I really appreciate the support. I knew this would be tough but I dont quite think I was prepared for the emotional part of it too. Tonight I totally broke down over feeling crappy, not being able to eat and being annoyed that I couldn't just lose the weight on my own and having to resort to surgery. Just a total breakdown. thankfully my husband has been really great helping me get through this. I really hope the next few weeks move quickly so I can start feeling human again...

    Looking for advice

My story was different but I did convert from lap band to RNY. If you do end up going that was, I can say that it is WAY easier to lose weight on a bypass than a band! Goid luck with the journey - stay in touch...

    Principal Life Insurance question

I have Principal insurance. I am required to complete a 6 month pre op weight loss case management with Carewise. Then it goes to them for approval.

    HELP

I am in this stage as well, but less than 2 weeks post op. My pouch likes eggs. I did a scrambled egg with some american cheese to moisten it and it went down well. I also did egg salad smushed to a puree and that was tasty and good too. I ate the crab/cheese filling of a few crab rangoons that sat in my stomach like a lead weight. I won't try that again, but it was silly of me to try that so early out. The family had goulash and garlic bread one night so I took some of the meat sauce before the Pasta was added and tossed it in the magic bullet (blender) until it was the consistency of cat food. I sprinkled some parmesan cheese on it for added Protein and ate about 2 T. of that. It was delicious and sat well. Today I am going to puree some lentil Soup for lunch. I have a sweet potato for later in the week. I will bake it then mash it up with some liquid to thin it out. I prefer to stay away from white potatoes because they are a waste of space in the tiny amount I can eat at this point. I also plan to make chicken chili later this week and will puree some of that and add liquid of needed. I've only been doing real food for a couple of days so I haven't tried much and can eat so little, but everyone is different. My pouch likes Greek yogurt best and I can actually eat a whole serving of it. You may be different. Search the boards for ideas. Ricotta bake seems to be popular. It's like no pasta lasagna, just layers of ricotta mixed with an egg and seasonings, layered with sauce and cheese and baked. I also have some refried Beans I'll try next week. They seem too thick to try this early out for me.

Anthem BC/BS in VA - any experience or advice?

My BMI was 35.1 when I first started trying to get approved. I got denied because I didn't have heart disease, lung disease or sleep apnea. By the time I wrote my appeal letter, I had gained a few pounds and my BMI was 36.7. I had to write a letter of appeal to BCBS. I wrote a letter of medical need, then a letter of emotional need, then I gathered letters of support from my GP, GYN, Podiatrist, and Gastrointerologist. Then my bariatric surgeon sent the entire package through with his endorcement. BCBS called me directly and said my letter was amazing and that they decided to approve me. If you have to appeal, I'd be happy to share my letters with you, just post your email and I'll send them to you directly. Good Luck! Suzanne

Anthem BC/BS in VA - any experience or advice?

Glad to hear things are going ok for ya! My date isn't until 3/11. I'm really looking forward to it. I have just about the same amount of weight to lose as you do, so it'll be neat to hear how you're doing! I've started back to working out so that I'll be a bit ahead of the game by the time surgery comes around. Keep me posted & congratulations to you too!

    Thank You

Hi, my name is Mary and I've just registered with the site. Despite that, I'm very familiar with Vertical Sleeve Talk, because it has been my "go-to" place for help and advice these past several months. I began the journey toward weight loss surgery in April of this year and, thoroughly researching my options, knew from the start that I wanted the vertical sleeve. But my insurance is Anthem Blue Cross (in Southern California), and I felt pretty dismal about my chances of being approved. My surgeon, (Quilici) requested the sleeve, but, sure enough, Anthem denied the procedure on the basis that it is "always" experimental. They approved me instead for the gastric bypass. If it hadn't been for everyone on this forum, I never would have had the knowledge or courage to file an appeal. I want to thank all of you so very much. Because of you, I knew to file the appeal directly with the DMHC in California, rather than with Anthem, and I knew exactly the information to send and what I should include in my letter. And I won my appeal! I'm scheduled to be sleeved on September 24th, and am looking forward to a new, healthy life. I'm even excited about starting my two-week pre-surgery liquid diet tomorrow. (Although I imagine the thrill of liquids may wear off in about three days. <G>) So thank you all very much. I'm so glad to be getting the sleeve instead of the bypass, and never would have been able to get that accomplished without the amazing help and advice you all have shared. -- Mary

    Really? 7 lbs?

You will NOT gain muscle that quickly, so don't buy into that. At most, people who train might gain about 2 pounds of muscle per month at the very most, and we're talking serious athletes. The average person might gain a quarter to half a pound of pure muscle per month, but usually not more. It took me three months of intense weight training to gain a pound of lean body mass. Most of what you are experiencing is probably Water gain, but you also have to take into account when you up your activity, your brain will tell you to eat more. Make sure you are not grazing throughout the day or developing the "I worked out hard so I can have extra" mentality. Keep your calories low, lean, and non-starchy and the water weight should drop away and take some fat with it.

From what I understand, if you have been under a 6 month supervised weight loss plan within the last 2 years (and can prove it) that can be used instead of the 6 months of visits. If you're doing the 6 months of visits now, be sure you don't skip a month of weighing in. Find out what your beginning weigh in is and be sure you do not surpass that weight. Best of luck!!

    New day New me

So for those of you who dont know i had lapband two years ago. At first i did well but for many reasons i relapsed into my emotional eating habit not too many months after having the procedure. Now after two years of more weight gain and much regret i am finally ready to give myself another chance at a better future. Im ashamed that I allowed myself to continue to gain weight after having weight loss surgery but i have to let go of all the regret. I have decided after many encouraging words i received on this site last night to begin my journey again. I ask that everyone please help me with this, for i know that starting over can be difficult. I am ready to begin a healthy lifestyle so i can have a better way of life. i no longer am doing this for my family who for years have made me feel so bad about myself for being the "fat one". This is a new day and a new me and I hope everyone on here will help provide me strength and power to finally end my bad eating habits and finally start the life I have always wanted and the life I was meant to have. thanks h

    Slow Loser? Maybe not . . .

Good wake up call! I'm the same way. Had my surgery on 3/19, have lost 52 lbs and in a stall. Everyone else that I am friends with on this forum that had surgery the same day have outpaced me. I'm 6'0 and my weight loss show immediately - very lean do to distribution. I think that is the reason why it is slower. Plus, I'm perimenopausal too. Comparing is Madness! Great post!!!
  21. I am 238 re-re-started.... : ( ......at 250. Curious to know how much weight I lose at first will only be water weight? Is there some formula or method of knowing what is at least close to how much you lose that is water weight? Or a basic time frame for how long the loss will be water weight?

My NSV - Missed my window!

I have 4 pair of Docker type shorts. 2 of them require a belt now. If I don't use a belt, the weight of my keys, wallet and cell phone can cause my shorts to fall off too.

    UHC Oxford

I have been wondering the same thing! I called Oxford and they said as long as it is a motivated attempt of weight loss for 6-months and your doctor or nutritionist is noting your progress, you should be fine. I even asked if I gained weight would I get denied and they said no. I also asked my nutritionist and she said the same thing and has never experienced any authorization issues with Oxford. That makes me feel better, but I’m still terrified of getting denied! I had 4 nutritionist appts already…the first two I lost about 5 pounds altogether and the third one I gained a pound (after the holidays). I actually have my fifth appt tonight and I know I gained some weight back UGH! I’m just nervous that all this weight gain is going to get me denied and I’ll have to do this whole process again!

    UHC Oxford

Everyone keeps saying UHC Oxford doesn't require weight loss in the "6 month motivated attempt". I've gain like 12lbs. I was dieting before I started then I've been sick off and on for like 4 months. I pray to God that I won't be denied because of that. I'm so tired of this stress of insurance approval.
  25. Hey @@TiffanyMarie , I have somewhat gone through the same as you. Having pcos for the last almost 15 years I've always had fouled cycles. Birth control specifically depoprovera needle is what has worked for me. Now after surgery i too had a lot if irregular perriods and multiple times of the month and once for about 3 weeks straight. I have since switched to the patch and it has helped regulate my cycle. I also had my surgery in December so I'm right there with you. What i have been tokd by my endocrinologist is that the rapid weight loss makes our hormones go crazy and hyperactive, also we become extremely fertile at this stage but pregnancies so early on are not recommended. So if you get an other test and are not pregnant i would suggest talk to your doctor and see what he suggest is best method of birth control as it could help.
