Calories, Calories, Calories...UGH!
Steve Puckett replied to Marathongirl's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Well, I'm 9 1/2 months post-op and down 201 lbs. I still consume mostly softer foods, Protein of about 80 grams a day and calories about 700 a day. I walk a brisk 5 miles six days a week and do about 300 push ups and 400 bicep curls ( with 5 lbs. 0 daily ). The equation is simple, keep calories low, work out alot and you will have success. Hunger is only in your mind now with the gift of by-pass surgery. Your trainer want to keep the job and if he/she senses that you want to eat more and implies that you should consume more, they win and if you gain some weight or fail to lose more, they win because you really need the trainer, Right ? -
eating the wrong things
mushsbat replied to mnsmith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same issue here. Just after my fill I was back to normal. I was feeling restriction and not hungry often. Now a week later I can't get hardly anything down. Mostly back on mushies. It's like I'm tighter than right after the fill. It's good b/c I'm not starving or anything but I want more options for meals. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -

Mental Anguish over Decision
Crosby replied to Worrier No. 1's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have never been banded but I am in my 50's and walking with a cane due to hip issues. Three years ago I lost 130 pounds with WW and was mountain biking, running and weight lifting...living like crazy. Then my hip was injured and I ate to deal with the injury and limited mobility. Hip surgery followed but so did 80 pounds. Recently reinjured the hip ( likely due to the weight) and I am sure I will need surgery again. That was my last straw. I can't wait to have bypass surgery and have very little hesitation. I know I will either physically die from obesity or emotionally die from my inability to have the life I want. I am diving into this opportunity full force. I know I can be successful and that is half the battle. Whatever you decide I wish you the very very best. -

Wow, is it really that close?
Nancy Rivers replied to Nancy Rivers's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
So, I had the psych eval today and I think she will recommend me for the surgery - at least that what it sounded like. There was an interview and then I had to take two questionnaire tests. But based on the interview she said that she would recommend me. I also found out that my referral letter from my PCP still had not been received. So, I spent the afternoon working on that. Made about 4 phone calls to my PCP's office and finally got them to fax me the letter along with 5 year weight history. I just faxed it over to my surgeon and called to make sure they received it which they did. YAY! One more item off my checklist! Just the EGD now on Friday. I'm getting nervous about that for some reason. I know that he's just basically going to knock me out and put a scope down my throat to get a visual, but still, I'm getting nervous. How weird is that? Then on Monday I get to sign the consent forms, do the pre-op teaching and get the "package" for the pre-op diet that will have to start the next day as that will then be 2 weeks before the surgery. In just 3 short weeks from today, I will be undergoing the surgery and starting my new life! Wow - this is going quick! -
The medical center that did my sleeve has a manual and "absolutely no protein shakes" after week 7. According to the nutritionist relying too much on liquid protein can actually inhibit your weight loss in the long run. So I'm learning how to get my protein without the shakes.

Nine months post op...how's everyone?
Djmohr replied to Fab@Forty's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi there! I had my bypass on Sept. 26,2014 HW - 315 SW - 310 CW - 199 I hit Onederland last Monday and have been bouncing back and forth between 199 and 200 all week. I am looking forward to getting another 5 lbs down so I never have to look at that 200 number again. I am recuperating from a serious spine surgery so I am on restriction from anything but walking and am up to a little over a mile a day until I can't take it anymore. Hopefully I will be able to extend to more this week. It's kind of a bummer because I was doing an hour of cardio every day prior to this little set back. Makes me feel like I am back to 310lbs, I get so tired and sore. However, I will not let it get the best of me. I have 34 lbs to go to get to goal and I can see that light coming closer all the time! Having this bypass gave me my life back! And other than my spine I am the healthiest I have been since my mid 20's! No more comorbitities! Woot, woot! -
Hi everyone, I am 3 weeks post op tomorrow and for the last 3 days I have been experiencing very bad headaches. I haven't taken anything because I'm afraid to swallow any pills and my doctor said no Advil, Morton. Etc.. Think ill give my doc a call tomorrow to ask him what I can take. I'm having about 300-400cals a day and drinking lots of Water. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Rash on Stomach and Breasts post op. Anyone else?
vchowdhury replied to 1Day1Life4Now's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After my RNY gastric bypass surgery I did break out in a rash on my stomach and breasts. It was so bad that I went to urgent care. The doctor prescribed benadryl and another topical antibiotic. The rash cleared up within a week. Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App -
You definately need to plan ahead but it is doable. I personally use premier Protein ready made shakes. They have 30 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and are 160 calories. They will fit nicely into a lunch box and are a great source of protein when you are starting out. For me, I lived on Greek yogurt, 1% cottage cheese and Protein Shakes for nearly the first 4 weeks. I still eat those items daily for Breakfast and lunch. They are great protein and fill you up. I also added fresh fruit to this line up at 4 weeks. Strawberries and watermelon, apples....you name it. Also I leveraged Protein Bars, 1 oz portions of cheeses and 1 oz. portions of nuts.

So the endoscopy revealed a large hiatal hernia and a duodenal ulcer! I have to be on ulcer meds and a med for acid reflux for 6 weeks and then have a repeat Endoscopy. Surgeon says a gastric sleeve would not be a good option for me with that large of a hiatal hernia. He still sees the gastric bypass as possible but the ulcer must be healed first. Disappointing but hopefully the ulcer will heal and I'll still be a candidate. No surgery in April though. Maybe May.

This seems like a stupid complaint but what is going on is that I just don't want food. I have 6cc in the band and feel no restriction however I just don't think about food. I think about exercise all the time and spend most of my free time at the Y. Every day I have about 900 calories left on my fitness pal. I am concerned that this is pathological. I am losing wait at about 2-3 lbs a week which I understand is normal. Just looking for anyone who feels or felt this way.

How Do You Break A Plateau?
jamierela replied to JinTx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been on a one for about 4 months. They said I was too tight so they loosened me the week after Thanksgiving. I have now gained 9 pounds in 3 weeks. I am eating healthy and still working out. I go in for a fill the 11th. I feel awlful and am regarding my band. I'm almost to my year mark. I had lost 65 pounds now it is 56 pounds. I still have 44 more pounds to go. -
How Do You Break A Plateau?
Corrigan replied to JinTx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think many of us have that problem, this holiday season. I have an article on stalls that may help explain your problem if it's not like mine (too much food). Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy so it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. I hope this helps. -
Anxiety is totally normal. I felt very strange for the first few weeks out of surgery. (warning, a little graphic) I kept having this really strange reoccurring thought/daydream of being able to just pull out my stomach and throw it away. Those weird feelings pretty much subsided by 4 weeks out, though. (I did make a strange animation of the thoughts that kept coming back, but it's too weird to share anywhere lol)

Hello, im glad to have seen this site. I been reading on these forms for a week or so and i guess its time to let my presence known. Im not banded yet but am looking into starting the process as soon as i can. To tell a little about my self, im 32 years old come thurs. June 23 and am 450lbs+. Im about 260lbs over weight and need a lot of help. I have a loving wife and two great kids(a 1 1/2 year old boy & a 5 month old girl). I was a meatcutter purty much all my life untill Nov. 5th 2003 when i could nolonger work. I have 4 rupturd disk and a few other things wrong with my back. After finding this out, i went from 375lbs to 450 in know time. With my size, there is nothing too much that can be done to help. All the Dr.s i see say i have to loose a lot of weight before they can do anything, at the same time saying i need bed rest. Not to lift ANYTHING and take it easy. Man oh man, what a year its been. Well, My wifes Dr mention the weight lost surgery and well, after looking into it, i think im now ready to go for it. My wife will be doing the lap-band also for she is 100lbs over weight. But, im on bluecare-medicaid and knowone around here seems to eccept it. But im not quiting. I will be going back to the Dr on the 30th of this month and will be talking to him about it. I hope he can get me in the right direction. Well, i hope to be talking with yall more in the future and be getting my band one day :-)

What is a realistic WL monthly target?
LaLaDee replied to BajanSleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think having any expectation around weight loss is difficult. It’s really going to depend on: - how long ago your surgery was (it’s faster right after, it definitely slows down after 6 months - age/height/gender (never ever compare yourself to a 20 something male!!) - current weight (if your BMI is very high, you can reasonably expect a higher loss) - activity levels and exercise - your diet (how closely are you following it? What are your calories/macros? Some plans target faster weight loss, eg keto, some aim for you to lose slow and steady. - other factors, eg your hormones, gut microbiome). Even then, there will be fluctuations. Some months you will lose more and some less. This is a long road for some of us. And you will stall, and then suddenly you will drop a few rounds really quickly. And it will be annoying. My advice is to be patient and honest with yourself. If it is weight loss is slow, assess how you can improve without beating yourself up! -
Over a year ago I went for my first seminar and have been reading and studying everything I can get my hands on. Went to more than one seminar before deciding on a surgeon to use and I've been spending lots of time trying to meet all the insurance requirements. One more doctor to see today before the insurance package will be ready to submit for approval. I'm being told that everything so far looks good but time will tell. Currently targeting a November 20th surgery date. Been reading this site for a little while now and figured it was time to say hi. I used to be an avid walker and look forward to getting back to it. Started with the treadmill last week so I'm hopeful. Nervous, frustrated and excited all at the same time....

A long road...
StartingOverNJ replied to StartingOverNJ's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was expecting at least a week if not more based on all the insurance horror stories I've been reading here. I guess if you take the time to get all your ducks in a row things move more quickly. I think the key reason is that the PCP I've been using for the last 3 or 4 years has kept detailed notes of the progress and then the lack of progress of my attempts to lose weight. Interesting to read them myself, a true roller coaster experience for sure. BTW - do you use the lapband support group sessions that Abkin/Bertha offer? Are they worth while? Thinking of going to the 11/19 one to check it out. I'm not sure group meetings are for me as I'm an Internet type person but willing to try anything to help adjust to my new life ahead. -
congrats on your approval!!!! My turn around for approval was a few days...I was expecting weeks!
