  1. I went in to see my PCP having been sleeved on 12/5. I told him I was disappointed with my weight loss compared to others. I know. I know. We should not compare ourselves but we all do. I weighed 280 when I was there in his office in November. The day I was in his office I weighed 252. Today I am down to 247.6 I am thrilled to be loosing but when I read about the people who lose 70-100 lbs in 3 months I just have to wonder what am I doing wrong. My PCP shook his head and ask me to consider my journey in its entirety My biggest recorded weight in his office was 386lbs in 2006. I fought down to 270 by 2008 and then bounced around 260 to 300 until I received by sleeve in 2012. All you dieters know that in order to lose over 100 lbs and keep it off for years I had already made major changes tommy eatting patterns. My PCP explain to me that because the surgery was not a big shock to my body I did see the big change. I most definitely eat less calories on a continued bases now but my NUT actual ask me to up my calories from the 900 I was doing to 1300-1500 pre surgery. Does anyone else think that is kind of comical. I have seen many stalls over the years even when doing the right things. My PCP say the body has set points where it will not want to let go of more. That is when I need to up calories a day or two the back off. Also I must up what I am forcing the body to urn during a stall. That is very hard for me I am no fan of exercise but I press on. My PCP told me to realize had I not already had made so many changes before surgery I would have seen a bigger difference but I would have been at a much higher starting weight to begin with. So I guess it all evens out in the end. This made me feel better about the lost post surgery. My hope with surgey was it would take me down the next hundred as my body seemed unwilling to go down below 260 even after that 6 month supervised 900 calorie diet the NUT complained was to low. So I do feel an accomplishment to be at 247.6 it is my lowest adult weight. I certainly hope to keep moving down the scale. My current limits 800 calories 50 carbs and 70 Protein. I try to walk uphill at 3mph for 30 mins 5 times a week. Yes it is a journey but I feel like I am running the hardest marathon ever!
  2. I think you're doing great! That's a lot to lose in just two short months. I think a lot of those huge fast weight losses are also with folks who started off heavier than you did at your sleeve weight. I've read in medical journals that the overall average loss with the sleeve tends to be 10 - 15 lbs per month. Upping the calories makes a lot of sense. I read somewhere about the science behind stalls, Water weight and the like. Sometimes it takes a calorie increase to get back to losing. You're to be congratulated on your success! Also, just think that pre-sleeve how much would you have gained during this past holiday season? Best of luck on your continued success.

    Spare Tire??

Tara is right. When burning fat, there is no way to isolate a target area to lose from first. The only thing you can do is a get in a good cardio workout. 30 mins is sufficient as long as your heart rate is elevated and you maintain your Target Heart Rate (THR). Here is a link to a THR calculator if you don't know what yours should be: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/target-heart-rate/SM00083 Additionally, circuit training (weight lifting) is optimal for maximum fat burn and overall body toning. Many people confuse weight lifting resulting in huge manly muscles, when in reality that's far more difficult to achieve (due to nutritional demands and heavy lifting opposed to # reps). Circuit training should be viewed as muscle strengthening ordinarily. Most gyms, for safety reasons, require all members to undergo a machine orientation where they teach you how to use the machine appropriately. See if this is offered by your gym. Sure it may be boring for them, but who gives a ****, they signed up for the job. In reality, it's your safety. Some of these machines may look easy, but they actually require specific postures or specific angles of compression etc for optimal results. Otherwise you won't get the results you are looking for. Additionally, pick up any SELF magazine, or go online for some workout regimens. Let those guide you if you are unsure of how many reps to do, what your target weights should be. Unfortunately exercise is not a wing it task, it needs to be done correctly.

    December 2005 bandsters

HI Janice, Scherry here I was banded Dec. 28, 2005 in Houston Texas Dr Spiegel. I also go to Weight Watchers and have been for over a year, that's my support group like you said the band is only a tool. I am 2.6 lbs from my goal. It's been slow but good I've had my problems adjusting to what I can and can't eat but I can at least have a bit of anything I want. I also have been going to Curves for over a year. I've lost 91 lbs to day. I'd love for us to be e-mail buddies. Scherry in Texas

  8. It has been a while. I have been banded since 02/2008 and at my lowest weight ha lost 111 lbs. I had thyroid cancer that was caught by my lap-band doctor when I put on 30 lbs in a few months and had trouble swallowing. I am now down 86 lbs but struggle to lose again. I had to have an unexpected surgery in May and didn't even think about what effects it might have on my band. I am in my 6th week f recovery and I have started feelig like my band is too tight. I can drink slowly but most all foods just find their way back up. It is not horribly painful like the "stuck" feelig but lots of pressure. I have days I can eat anythig and days I can't swallow my own spit. It is very bothersome and I worry that it could be something more. Thinking of going back on liquids for a few days and seeing if it helps any. Has anyone else had a surgery like this that an share the effects on the band? Also, what did you do to jump start the weight loss again after everythig settled down? Thanks for the support and advice.
  9. Heidikate, I had my orientation first, they weighed me in , then they scheduled me for the dietician and the surgeon ( Dr. Hahn- he is awesome ). At that appointment he gave me a goal weight and said when I come within 5 lbs of that to call in and they would schedule me for my psychiatric appointment. Following the diet in the binder they gave me I lost the weight within a month and completed the psyc. And then had to wait for the last 5 lbs to come off before they would schedule me for the surgery . Then I had to do an ekg. All together it took two months from start to finish. My friend went to Kaiser SSF and got it done with within a month and half. She didn't need to loose weight but had to attend a lot of classes. Did the DR say you had to loose weight? Did you get the binder? Good luck to you !

Not sure what it is but...

Tracy, I was an exercise hater. Hence my weight getting to 330 pounds. I realized that if I didn't make exercise part of my daily life I would always be fat. So, right out of surgery I decided to move every chance I had. I was up and walking around the exterior of the hospital within an hour of coming out of recovery and kept walking until I was given the go ahead by my surgeon for full exercise. I joined a gym (Curves) the day I turned 4 weeks post-op and I faithfully go every day. I have made so many new friends and have found so much support through the owners, employees and members that I actually look forward to going. I also ride my bicycle with my husband as often as daylight permits. My grown kids actually have started to join us and it has become a family outing every weekend and it is so much fun. My husband has always told me to push past the exhaustion of exercise and when I feel like I can't breath anymore to focus on slowing down my breathing and the feeling will pass. I would stop and plop on the sofa at the point where breathing got hard and give up. I've discovered that he was right. It does get easier when you push past that point and concentrate on your breathing. I love riding my bicycle and feel so alive like I can ride forever. I'm telling you all this to try and motivate you to find some form of exercise that you enjoy and will make part of your everyday life. I want you to succeed and become healthier, lose the weight and become happier, more confident and help others in their weight loss journey. Exercise is a necessary part of life. Best of luck to you and feel free to message me if you have any questions. P.S. Sassy is a good thing! Donna

    Then and now -- 3 months post-op.

Thanks for all the kind words. Every time that I feel frustrated that the weight isn't coming off "fast enough," I just have to look at this and remind myself: this is what three months looks like. In a year, I won't even recognize myself! Also, I'm hoping that the positive changes start showing up in my tummy as well as my face. I'm happy about the changes in my face, don't get me wrong, but I'd love to be able to take a vacation somewhere sunny this winter and not feel TOO ashamed of my body!

  13. I was banded on 04/13/2012 & lost 30 lbs. the first 3 months. However, I seem to be stuck with the weight loss. I'm presuming I need more exercise &/or less calories. I am on a 1200 calorie or less per day regime.... My starting weight was 211 lbs. & I am currently at 179 lbs. Does anyone have any real suggestions to jump start my weight loss? I considered going back to liquids, but I feel that's unreasonable. I work in law enforcement, work 12 hour shifts & hardly have any time to do extracirricular stuff, let alone exercise. I self-paid for my surgery & really want to do the right things! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!
  14. I am almost 6m out PO and I was wondering is there a way to speed up the fat loss progress? I am losing only 5-8 pounds a month for the past 3 months and I was wondering if there is a way I can kick start it back into overdrive? I had a goal to reach my goal weight by mid July but at this rate, I will be nowhere near it by then.

    Approved!!

Hi, I got my approval for revision to the sleeve today from my doctor's office. I am going from RNY to sleeve. I had my bypass 10 yrs ago. The pouch stretched about 80% and of course my weight came back. I have health restrictions due to severe allergies to alot of drugs that are common pills for high blood pressure. When I got my bypass, they took my gall bladder and repaired a huge hiatal hernia at the same time. I did not have discomfort whatsoever. Mine was open incision, but I suppose if you get laproscopic surgery the healing won't be too bad. I remember my drain tube for the gall bladder surgery part took longer to heal. Post op, I felt soooo much better--I had severe anemia 3 mos prior to surgery that the bypass saved me. Keep us posted--you will be in good care--try not to worry! rsr53 I got my approval letter in the mail yesterday for my revision. I will have the band to VSG and gall bladder surgery at the same time. I know several here have also had that surgery and would appreciate any advice you have. I am a little nervous about surgery but know that is normal. When I get really nervous I say to myself," you are going to have surgery no matter what because the gall bladder has to come out. this is just a little more." Seems to work a little. Is there a great deal more pain associated with gall bladder removal? Cathy

    Lap Band Removal

Wow, I'm so glad to hear that you felt so much better after a couple of days - that's great! I'm not happy that you're so hungry, but hopefully that will normalize over the next few days/weeks. Even if a band is empty, it still helps with hunger....just from being there. Once it comes out, it's like a big pendulum swing......which will hopefully slow down somewhere in the middle I was banded in March 2013, with a starting weight of about 225. My highest weight ever was 228. I dropped 70 pounds with the band/plication, but after about 16 months, started slowly gaining. That was all on me, but a couple of years ago I started getting horrible reflux. I know for sure it's band related, because when the band was emptied it went away. A couple of months ago my doc said.....let's try it again. Within 3 days of the fill, I was choking on acid again. With the 35 pound weight gain, back came the blood pressure meds. I was off them completely when my weight was down. I know this will resolve once I get the weight off, which I will work very hard on doing. I really don't want a revision surgery; I'm too old to put myself through anymore of this. If my weight continues to climb, I will reconsider. What type of appetite suppressant did your doctor give you? I've taken them on and off for years; lost tons of weight on them. I tried them again a few months ago (from my internist), but could no longer tolerate them; heart racing, couldn't sleep, etc. At this point, it's up to me to get my act together and stop the madness around food. I'm 62, and you'd think after a lifetime of dealing with this sh-t, I'd be on a healthier path. I have other age (and obesity) related health issues. At this point, living heavy; possibly getting heavier, the stakes are just way too high. Ugh......this yo yo weight issue takes too big of a toll.

    35 lbs down!

Did you notice that it started out good and then decreased during the day? That's what's happening for me -- in the morning up until around 2pm, I feel GREAT. When I exercise, usually a long walk around lunchtime, I have incredible energy and stamina. But then I start feeling more and more sluggish, irritable, and a little sick to my stomach. By bedtime I usually feel shaky and wobbly and miserable. The only thing I can figure is that I'm still sort of eating on my old schedule, where my meals were VERY widely spaced. Since I tend to go to bed fairly late, that can mean up to 6 hours since I last ate, by bedtime. Also, since I've slowed down my Water intake a lot to help with the reflux (and it HAS helped), I've been struggling to make 60-80 oz of water/day. I wonder if I'm getting a little dehydrated too. First thing I do when I get up in the morning is drink 20 oz of water, so maybe it's a progressive thing throughout the day, too. Or who knows, it could just be a healing thing. I'm really happy about the weight loss, though. I hope my "pound a day" thing keeps up for just a little while longer. I wouldn't mind seeing 275 by my birthday (although 20 pounds in 17 days seems like a stretch...) :001_tt2:
  18. I had surgery 8/27/14 and lost 10 pounds the first week. I am three weeks out today but the scale has NOT moved in the past two weeks. I am tracking my food intake with My Fitness Pal and I am getting plenty of Protein.....eating ONLY things on the "approved" diet list (only about 700 calories a day!).....even joined a gym and am working out almost daily (walking a mile on the treadmill and 20 minutes on the elliptical machine). Even people who don't know I had surgery say they notice I am losing weight. I can tell a difference in my face, my stomach, my backside.....my watch is looser, my rings are looser, my shoes are looser, my pants are looser. How is it POSSIBLE the scale is not moving?????? Experienced sleevers -- HELP!!!

    Newbie here!!

Hi there. I am in Machias, which is wayyyy downeast in Maine. I am 2 hours from Bangor and that's where I had my LapBand done. They have an excellent Surgical Weight Loss Program there and the staff is awesome. I had Dr Michelle Toder of Northeast Surgery and she is excellent. I am not really sure how far you are from Bangor, but I do the 2 hour drive for all my stuff and it's not too bad.

    Alcohol

well, I was thinner for like a min. once when I was depressed. went from 170-113lbs in like three months. I did get drunk much fast. Drunk after one drink. (hence the term "light weight") But you are drunk for a shorter amount of time since you took in less to begin with. I find it that way for me now before sugery since I am on Lexapro.
  23. L12

    No restriction at all

It is very common not to feel much (or any) restriction for months. It took me about six months to get to my sweet spot--then the hunger was gone, portion sizes were easily tolerated, and the weight started going much faster. I went into surgery knowing that beforehand and knew I'd probably need to be patient. Preparing myself to wait for the good stuff made that six months much easier.
  24. It can be overwhelming. We have focus on what we are eating, drinking and exercise too. I had my surgery over 4 years ago. I had some problems with strictures and I had 5 endoscopes with 4 dilation I actually couldn't even hold water down. So I really had a problem with food. I was very limited in what I could eat or drink. I developed an aversion to food. I started counseling with a local counselor, she tried but she didn't have a clue. Finally, my Surgeon and his nurse became concerned enough about my weight loss that he set me up with a Bariatric Counselor. She told me that I needed to eat every 1/2 hour and drink Boost for snacks. Now, a person that has fought so hard to lose her weight does not want to hear this. I told my hubby that I refused to trade one eating disorder for the other. I just could not justify that!! So yes we do live our new lifestyle and adjusting to what ever we have to. Listen to your Dr when he says get your weight loss within your honeymoon phase. Hang in there!! Take care of you!!
  25. I've been losing or trying at the very least to lose weight since September. I was told to lose a good portion of weight before I could have surgery.I've had some success but as before it's almost an exhausting mind set to be in to be on top of my eating behaviors as well as mentally keeping myself encouraged to exercise. I feel like the thoughts of needing to find movement because it'll burn some calories are becoming obsessive. Food is always a thought too trying to stop cravings. Those damn commercials make pizza look so friggin good. I take the inside of my lip and bite the inside of the cheek. It's not to really hurt myself but to impose a negative reinforcement. Along the lines of when junk food looks appealing I'd associate with discomfort. anyway in the past with losing weight I've always become like this though apparent by weight it never sticks for long, I feel concerned with weightloss surgery it'd have to be a 24 hour focus. Is this along the lines of normal that you'll always be obsessed and is it common for weightloss patients to develop eating disorders?
