Accepted into the bariatric program... Again.
JessLess replied to deewill3's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think I had a lot of the fears that someone with anxiety would have. What if I fail? What if people know I got the surgery and judge me, especially my relatives? What if I gain the weight back like I have every other diet I've been on? What if I get some serious medical problem? What if my CEO finds out and is mad I did this on his health insurance? How am I supposed to do the laundry if I can't lift more than 15 lbs.? I'm 10 months out and so far, none of these things have happened, knock on wood. -
caved...ate reg. food during liquid stage!
misltoe posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Aaahhhh! I caved! I ate whold food a week after surgery! Not to sound melodramatic...but I feel like a failure. I am so frustrated with my choices. I finally have a good chance to loose weight and I feel I am that I am sabotaging it. Anyone else cave in to the call of "real" food during your post op eating schedule? I had lots of restriction until a week after surgery. Then it went away over a couple days. Now I have very little. Do you think the swelling went down, or did I cause the band to slip? Do you think I hurt my band...cause my stomach to stretch? 11 days since surgery...3 days until mushies... -
Falling off the liquid diet bandwagon...
MissWhitzel replied to k-statearmywife's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know the feeling!!!But don't be hard on yourself- you've done well with the liquid diet. Can I make a suggestion? Put away your scale!!!! That HELPS me a lot. I wouldn't be obsessed about the weight loss during pre-op dieting. the most impt thing is u will lose alot post surgery then you can take back ur scale. pUtting ur scale away would help u focus on getting back on track and focus on ur surgery preparations. good luck! We're all here rooting for you and you're doing good. 6 lbs is great!!! hang in there~ -
3 Week Stall ( Frustrated)
Miss Pea replied to tonyrizz's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I had the exact same thing. It lasted 2 weeks and I actually gained weight! Don't stress - its normal and to do with the fluid in your glycogen cells. You will come out the other side. It's just frustrating at the time. -
You look amazing. I'm sure that is a common fear. I'm just a couple months post op and I'm already fearing weight gain. Maybe a before and after photo on the fridge might help. I'm not sure. Welcome.

Normally no. Mine was cosmetic. Now people that loose a lot of weight and the extra skin becomes a problem yes it will. Everyone is different.

Hello Everyone, I went for the first check up after I had surgery. Surgeon says I look great & seem so happy. Lost weight as posted on here. He told me for the week eat soft food & jump right next month to straight regular food. I was like what? so soon? He was like yes you can eat go home & eat some food. I was like I have a hard time now imagine eating real food. I try out the mash potatoes (vomit)... I'm having a hard time keeping anything down. I'm at the point that I want nothing to do with food. I rather stick to my popsicle & liquid. Any suggestions? Any advice? I'm also starting to loose a lot more weight I can feel it. My pants almost felt off in a school meeting I had today. had to make the belt tighter. Oh boy... All I do is sleep. I'm clear for exercise but no lifting over 20 pounds no crunches stomach exercise but everything else is good.

I was denied at first for a 39 BMI- I had to go back in and reweigh and lucky gained 4 pounds after the holidays that bumped me up to over 40 BMI. I was contemplating putting weights in my pockets for the weigh in.....

Falling off the liquid diet bandwagon...
sberrys replied to k-statearmywife's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't get discouraged and let yourself cheat! You've been doing great. Just because the scale only went down a little doesnt mean you havent lost much. If your clothes are looser then you KNOW you're losing. Water weight can make the scale fluctuate up and down 5 lbs. Keep positive! You're almost there! -
bypass vs. banding???
starting again replied to angel1972's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think it depends on you. I was banded on Dec 23, 08. I have lost 18lbs and have 80 to go...I have a friend who also has the choice. I let her feel where my port is (and you can feel this thing inside of you) and she freaked. There is also more care needed with the band. You have to get fills and very carefully watch how you eat, NO drinking 30 minutes before or after your meals. It just depends what you are willing to go through to loose the weight and begin your new life. Gastric bypass has way more side effects too...I wish I would have gone bypass...:blushing: -
Dr. Massong, Psychologist, MS Gulf Coast
ParrotheadCathy replied to MsGulfCoast's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't worry about it. He's looking for people who have unreasonably expectations about weight loss and stuff like that. He might ask you direct questions about why you want this surgery, or what your expectations are regarding the life changes it will cause. We're all a little nuts, LOL, but there aren't any trick questions to worry about. Just talk openly about where you've been and why you are where you are now. -
bypass vs. banding???
RestlessMonkey replied to angel1972's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
There are so many side effects and long term ill effects with bypass. I know it's a godsend for some and I think that's great; but even though my loss has been very slow with the band I STILL would rather have it than bypass. In fact I would never have WLS if bypass were my only option. Considering that 3 years post op the average weight loss is comparable between the two surgeries, to me it's a no brainer. If my surgeon had tried to push bypass on me, I'd have gone elsewhere. (not being dramatic either, it's just the truth) Even my PCP said to get the lap band, not bypass. So I'm a band baby all the way. -
Although I have decided to go with the band, it was also recommended that I really consider bypass. Mainly because I am diabetic. It seems that there is a higher incidence of diabetes reversing itself with gastric. This is occurring before the weight is even lost. Although this is happening it is not a guarantee for all diabetics. I have also heard if your BMI is very high (not sure how high) then gastric makes more sense. My surgeon also said if I was 50 or older he would not recommend the band but he would rather do the gastric. I assume because he figured there is less time to reverse the diabetes by then I think they believe I will have gone from type I to type II and be insulin dependent. Anyway as of now my diabetes is in full control and I have about 60 lbs to lose. I am committed to losing the weight and I think the band is the answer for me. Again, it is different for each person.

6 Month Supervised Diet
BandedBettyBoop replied to WeberStudent's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was in the same boat. My BMI was 42 & now I'm at 38. My doctor said I needed to lose at least 15 and I lost 20 in the 6 month diet. I was approved with no problems. No one ever told me not to lose "too much" as long as your weight history reflects an qualified BMI I think you should be ok. Just focus on starting good habits. -

Maine Lobster band

Hello all - I am a banded Mainer (Mainah....) Where from? I'm in So. Portland. Banded last November and avid reader of the "Slow Losers" thread - yes, slow weight loss, but NOT ONE REGRET!! Welcome! -
Try tracking what your eating . make sure your eating what you should be , make sure your not eating TOO many calories, make sure your getting ENOUGH calories. Not getting ENOUGH calories can cause you to stall your weight loss too. Are you exercising ? Go over the "rules" again make sure your following them . Are you taking small bites , are you taking 30 mintues to eat, are you NOT drinking when you eat , are you waiting at least 30 mintues to drink after you eat ect ? When was the last time you had a fill ? Are you sure your not too tight if your Pbing a lot . If your PBing constantly you need to give your stomach a break and allow it to heal . Call your doctor go over things with him/her or the nutritionist in the office that's what they are there for . PS DONT DO THE KRISPY CREME Thing , you will get STUCK and SICK and possibly Damage your band ! HTH Mindy

Hair loss, vitamin deficiency, ect.
Amber replied to Penpen's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
hair loss doesn't always have to do with the Protein and Vitamins. Having adequate amounts of those could help but drastic weight loss with any diet can cause weight loss. It takes a bit for your body to reset itself with your new weight. Hormone changes is probably the big one for major weight loss. Here is a link of what can cause hair loss. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hair-loss/DS00278/DSECTION=causes Also, Most people on this forum say their hair loss started at around 3 months after surgery then started to grow back 3 months after that. So that goes with what the article says. But I've also seen some say it took anywhere from 6 months to a year to start growing back. It depends on the person. It will grow back so don't let that idea be a major part of your decision. -
HI there, my name is Kari and I am 24 yrs old. I was banded on November 3, 2006 by Dr. Carl Sunby in Madison, WI. I had some complications and was unable to get a fill until this past monday March 11th. The biggest complication was that the larger incision got infected, and I mean infected. My Dr was worried that the band had been exposed to the air because you could see all the way through to my inside (lovely i know) and if that were the case there was a possibility for internal infections and all that. It took almost 3 months of packing wet gauze into the incision and keeping it all clean for it to finally heal. Unfortunately I have a really ugly scar now but I guess it could have been much worse. I have had a really frustrating time because my Dr kept telling me not to do too much exercise especially nothing abdominal and so I haven't really lost much weight since my surgery. But like I said I finally was able to get a fill a couple of days ago, which was also fun because with all the scar tissue he couldn't feel the port so we had to schedule another appointment to try it under the xray machine, so hopefully I am on the right track now. I am happy to be apart of this website and hopefully will be able to meet some new people. Good luck to you all and take care

Yup you can lift weights. Just check with you doctor to see how soon after surgery you can start.

You're sweet to worry......some of us go through a bit of a depression right after the surgery. For me, it was that time period that I couldn't really eat, but hadn't seen results in weight loss..... The pain....geez, I don't really remember! Seriously, it wasn't that bad.... Fast forward six months.....I'm down fifty pounds....several sizes...I have more energy and a better mental attitude than I have in years. I still enjoy eating, I just don't eat as much. We still go out to eat, I'm just selective about what I order. Go in to it with a positive attitude and you will have a much more positive outcome.....

It is the same thing with my husband and I. We travel and look for really good food. Sometimes I am jealous of what he can eat but I cannot but to be honest, my band has gotten me to try foods I might not ordinarily try and I have been thrilled with many of my choices. It does not change what we do, just my food choices when we get there. I also find that I can usually manage a taste of what I want but cannot eat a lot of. I still get the experience without it impacting my weight. Remember, sometimes change is good.

Congratulations to all of you for making this decision!!! I agree, it seems there is always 1 person that it is so hard to tell, for me it was my Mom. She just doesn't understand why I had to do this. And what's sad is even today she will ask me "how much more are you going to lose? when are you going to stop?". She just feels that if I had wanted to lose weight bad enough then I could/should have been able to do it on my own. I have realized that she will never really be on-board with me on this and I also finally realized that I'm OK with that. I know that I have done really well on this journey, and no, I'm not finished yet. lol As long as I have the support of my husband and kids, they are who matter most to me. As you travel this journey, check in here frequently, you will find a tremendous amount of support and advice!
