    Food Woes

So protein tricks that help me.. I start almost every morning with a protein shake mixed with half a cup of coffee and some ice (most of them are way too sweet for me to drink on their own) this knocks out 30grams of protein right off the bat. I usually also have either a light and fit Greek yogurt or Oikos Zero (both around 100 ish calories and 15 grams of protein) once a day. As other mentioned I also enjoy hummus which obviously isn’t as high protein as other things but it is low in fat/calories comparatively. I usually enjoy it with either sliced cucumbers or carrots (one thing a lot of people forget about is the importance of fiber that doesn’t come from grains/starch) I know you enjoy your English muffin and I’m ALL for enjoying the things that work for you but perhaps you could amp up the proteins and cut some carbs calories by only eating a half of an English muffin with cream cheese and then layer a little deli meat on top for extra protein? (Sliced turkey or ham would both be good with a little cream cheese or even smoked salmon/lox) When I’m working (super active Job as a bartender) I do drink a Fairlife chocolate protein shake at some point in the evening so that’s another 30 grams of protein. I do usually meal prep one actually cooked meal, this week I’m having 2.5 oz taco seasoned catfish, 2 tablespoons sautéed mixed veggies, and 2 tablespoons refried beans- I think that meals comes in at around 150 calories. If you need more protein snacks a lot of people like Quest products I think their chips are …okay… I don’t love them. I did find a brand on Amazon called IWON that is made out of brown rice, quionoa, and pea protein- they have a bunch of flavors and I like them better but they are a touch pricier and 180 calories a bag so I use those as a meal slot- but sometimes it’s good for on the go. Anyway I hope some of this is useful but either way I wish you the best of luck!

    Please help !

I don't know if this will work for you but I tried shaved ice with just the ice by itself and nothing else. It felt like when I had the liquid diet that soup broth, protein shake, and water were all I was able to do if any because it was hard to keep down and I had to do the liquid diet for 3 weeks longer because I had a high BMI to start off.

    Sleeve or Bypass? Confused

The surgeon may be basing their recommendation for sleeve over bypass because of the severity of your gerd & what damage it has caused. I had occasional reflux, which isn’t as severe as gerd, for decades before my surgery. I managed it with diet (no spicy food, no high fat, rich or creamy foods, only occasional carbonated drinks - champagne & tonic in a G&T - little or no caffeine). I only needed to take a ppi a bare handful of times a year. My surgeon recommended a sleeve too because I was managing my reflux well & it was consequently a pretty minor case. Do I still have reflux? Yes, but it manifests itself differently. Hiccups not as severe, no bad taste in my mouth, though I have burning in the back of my throat 3 or 4 times a week at night. I do take Nexium every morning now which my surgeon warned me I’d have to. But if you’d feel more comfortable with bypass, you have the right to request that surgery.

Anxiety about calories in pureed food

I wasn’t given a caloric goal either just portion size - 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup. Calories would have varied based upon what I used to purée the protein with say stock vs Mayo. But you are eating so little that it would be pretty impossible to eat to excess. But the questions, doubts, concerns, etc. can seem to run rampant in our head for the first couple of weeks. Give your dietician a call. They’ll either confirm you are on the right path or maybe tweak what you’re doing a little with suggestions for alternatives. You’ll feel more comfortable about what you’re doing whatever they say. Also, purées still tend to go through your digestive system more quickly so you won’t really start to feel full until you’re on solid foods. Then try not to eat until you feel full but until you’ve had enough. By the time the message gets through that you’re full you’ve usually eaten more. It’s why we’re encouraged to eat slowly. I still ask myself do I need the next bite or just want it. It’s become a great habit. All the best.

1 week away from changing my life

Congratulations on your surgery date! You’ve been through so much so I know you are super duper excited. Im still on fluids I had sleeve surgery a week ago. I do like the Isopure Infusions, you can add as little or as much as you like, and I also like the Isopure zero carb zero sugar clear protein(that one is a bit pricey) but you get 32 grams in one bottle. I get them as Vitamin shoppe

    6 months out

You have lost 85 pounds since surgery, congratulations. You may just be in a stall. I believe they typically last a week or two but have heard many people on here have them last three weeks or even a month. If you are sticking to your plan 100% it is just a stall and it will lift soon. If you are winging it you may want to start logging your calories and measuring things again just so you have that info to give to your nutritionist when you speak with them if the stall does not break soon.
  7. Hi all- I'm almost EIGHT years out VSG! I can't believe how time has flown by. I have some regain and have been refocused to get it off. I joined CrossFit several years ago and really enjoyed it but I'll be honest, I suffer gym anxiety so bad that I avoid going at all. The anxiety has gotten progressively worse over the last 3 years of attending. I changed gyms and even got my husband to join but I'm suffering bad. I literally have panic attacks. The irony in this is that I'm a psych nurse practitioner and spend my days treating folks with the same sorts of issues. So I know this is actually legit. I was on YouTube one day looking at some random video, and an ad came up showing this at-home dance program that involved a group of people, and they were doing these dance/exercise routines to multiple genres of music. I sadly don't remember what the heck it was called but wondering if anyone here knows, or knows of something similar?? I'm going to be likely leaving my CrossFit gym and since I'm really trying to get back to more of a bariatric-focused program, trying to increase my aerobic activity at home. I thought something like this might be a fun option. I hope someone can direct me... Thanks!
  8. Just checking in to see who is around...been about a month since I stopped by but I've spent the last several weeks getting a lot of 'stuff' done in my life so online presence has been minimal! Hope everyone is good, I just ordered some new proteins to try and help me get to the finish line that I'm still struggling to reach.

    6 months out

your 6 months out and your sidebar says you started at 477lb and lost 162lb and are currently at 315. That is amazing for only 6 months. Keep it going. home scales are not always accurate and many people end up in a stall where they wont loose any weight for a little while. Thats normal.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

March 1 here - one week out and doing well after a rough few days of liquid diet (which I’d done two weeks prior to surgery so I was starving). Knock on wood, no bad side effects.
  11. new here.. I just had my surgery on Thurs so 5 days ago for me as well.... I wonder why everyones plan is different too. I was sent home with a list for week 1, 2, 3-4, 5-6, and week 7. Right now with week one its just the liquid diet but on friday I can start week 2 which includes mashed potatoes, yogurt, plain oatmeal, unsweetened applesauce and cottage cheese. Personally I dont like anything on the list except for mashed potatoes but man can I not wait until Friday for them! I had the gastric bypass rather than the sleeve so I wonder if thats the difference? I have no idea but I am curious why it varies so much.

Group therapy is tremendously powerful in overcoming disordered eating, too. It's the #1 intervention for binge eating disorder, which is believed to affect twice as many people as anorexia and bulimia combined. If you can't get treatment for whatever reason, seek out support in any other way you can, and take baby steps to help yourself: 1. Keep a journal. On the left page, write what you ate during the day. On the right, dot down how you felt that day. You may start to see patterns that will help you. 2. Read about how people overcome disordered eating. It's not a matter of trying harder, controlling yourself more. The way out of feeling out-of-control when it comes to eating is a) not being hungry and b) being a lot more kind to yourself. 3. Stick to your instinct that you, too, deserve to live a happy life. That there's help to be had and that you deserve that help. If you don't believe this, and stick to it even as you meet dead ends in your search for help, you won't get it. I'm not saying it's easy. But it's so very worth it.

    The BEST grilled chicken recipe

This is my go to recipe for grilled chicken, which I eat quite often. I usually grill a large batch and cube it and freeze it in small portions. The baste prevents the chicken from drying out, so it makes it easier to eat after wls. I also use a meat mallet and make the chicken breasts more like a fillet, so it grills evenly and this also prevents them from drying out because the entire breast cooks evenly. Sprinkle the seasoning on both sides of chicken breasts, and before you put the chicken on the grill, mop the baste over one side of the chicken breasts, and place baste side down on the grill. Before turning chicken breasts, mop baste on the chicken then flip. Best grilled over charcoal with cherry wood chips. Voila✨. Grill seasoning 1/4 cup salt 4 tbs. coarse black pepper 3 tsp. granulated garlic 3 tsp. granulated onion powder 3 tsp. dried oregano 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes Grill baste: 2 tbs. butter 1 small onion, finely diced 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 tbs. flour 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 2 tbs. lemon juice 1 tbs. dijon mustard 1 1/2 tbs. sugar 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 2 minutes. Add the garlic and cook about 1 minute, but don't allow it to brown. Stir in the flour, allow to cook without browning, about 1 minute. Whisk in the olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, and sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium low. Add the parsley and whisking often, until lightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Let cool. The baste will separate. Whisk well before using. The baste can be made ahead and refrigerated. Bring to room temperature before using.

What do you do when you get sick?

My cure all for sickness and coughs and colds. Chop up a big chunk of ginger root, do the same with 2 or 3 lemons. Boil in a pan for 20 - 30 minutes. When cool put into a large jar with a lid. Keep in the fridge. Use it like cordial/ tea , Put an inch in a cup and add hot or cold water to it and sweeten as you like. I add honey for coughs [and whiskey]
  16. I think someone did the maths - there's 3,200 posts about it or so It's entirely normal. Mine was in week 3, from around day 15-18 after surgery.
  17. There are a lot of sources that talk about a "3 week stall" that describes a temporary (maybe 1-4 weeks) halt in weight loss right around this time-- don't worry, it's normal! I've read that it's the body reacting and adjusting to the change (and making sure it's not starving). Some people say they have a big drop right after the stall ends and that they have other signs of 'progress' during this time. It might be a good decision to weigh yourself less frequently, like once a week or so, so that you don't agonize too much over the micro-ups/downs. I personally hit this stall for about a week, quickly lost another 7 lbs and then hovered there for another couple of weeks. Keep doing what you are doing, you are totally on the right track!
  18. It seems like more and more new users forget to use the sidebar with surgery info and progress. While it's obviously anyone's choice to keep the information private, it makes it so much easier to help with questions when you have an idea of where people are in their journey. I'm wondering if it's simply because more users are mobile-only? Maybe they don't see the sidebars (I use BP on desktop only)? Maybe they don't even know it's there? It's especially helpful when someone asks about nutrition, complications, phase-specific worries and stalls to understand right off the bat where they are in their journey. There's a world of difference between stalls happening for a BMI52 duodenal switch patient who had surgery 7 weeks ago and lost 10 lbs total and then a sleever who's a year out at BMI24. It's getting harder and harder to tell as fewer and fewer new users use the sidebar. Maybe we the site could help nudge people to fill in the info?

    Post-op Diet: First Few Weeks

I was on Optifast for 26 days pre op and had no problems. Actually enjoyed the shakes. Post-op, my doc didn’t supply the shakes so I bought some protein powder. I mix my protein with milk and Greek yogurt for a hearty shake, however I’m only able to get down 3 shakes a day and I am soooo hungry. It’s keeping me up at night. Hoping I can transition to puréed foods on Thursday.
  20. Oh yeah. From week 5 I think it was. There was some language in there, now I want to look it up in the lil binder I got from the hospital ... ... awww, that was a welcome revisit to a little book I used a LOT. It actually feels like a hundred years ago now. I forgot how they even have 3 different plans you can choose from for the weeks after surgery to make sure patients find a path through it (looking at you, endless pre-mixed shakes that I hated). And meat starts 14 days after surgery, I was looking forward to that! Anyway, it's just on the plan from Day 21 and forward to satisfy sweet cravings as "a little diet soda". So nothing particular about it. --- I don't drink a ton of it. It's just not that interesting anymore, to be honest. But there's nothing I can't have, and that's kinda important to me because otherwise, we're back to living in black-and-white as so many people battling obesity and eating disorders do.

You will be fine at 3 weeks out. Nicotine is out of your blood rather quickly. Usually they test for cotinine. It’s out of your blood by the 10th day. I would not smoke or use any nicotine products while healing. You don’t want to hinder that process. I wouldn’t worry. Good luck :)
  22. For sure! Do you have to do a liquid diet 2 weeks before?

    Stomach capacity

Your tummy is still healing & the sensitivity, intolerance to certain foods on certain days will continue for a while. Treat it gently. Eating a little less one day won’t harm. I still have days I can’t eat everything on my plate at a meal or something I eat regularly doesn’t seem to sit as well & I’m almost three years out. This morning I ate left over rolled oats from my breakfast yesterday (added some fresh to get to about my usual portion). It all balances out across the week. If I’m a bit low on my protein today, I’ll have a little more tomorrow. Same with fluids. Listen to your body. It’s a good habit to start now about your eating. You’ll discover your real hunger signals, your I’ve had enough signals, what you need versus what you want, etc. All the best.

    Stomach capacity

My gastric bypass was revision surgery from a sleeve due to hiatal hernia and reflux. Since I had the sleeve first, most of the hunger hormone (ghrelin) producing cells were in the part of the stomach they removed. I rarely got really hungry with the sleeve, so perhaps that might carry over with the bypass as well. I know my remnant stomach is still there, but it's a sleeve, not a full stomach so it won't produce the hunger hormone like others. That being said, I do hope after time I can end up eating more reasonable portions. After a year or so with the sleeve I was able to eat 3-4 oz of solid protein with 1/3 to 1/2 cup veggies and a little starch. I am hopeful for similar capacities with the bypass.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hello everyone! Happy to see that you are doing well! My surgery was on November 24, I lost 57 lb, which is 70% of my weight loss goal. Felling great, no issues at all. I had couple stalls, the last one was almost three weeks long. Last week I noticed that I can eat bigger portions of solid foods without feeling restrictions. Do you guys feel less restrictions too? How much of solid food can you eat at once, like one cup or less?
