First off I will be 6 weeks out from sugery tomorrow. I have lost 41 lbs so far. My issues have been two nights ago I got back from a 45 minute brisk walk and went to drink some Water, and the water would not go down. It got caught in my esophagus at the point it enters my stomach and I threw it up. I tried to get water to pass for almost a half hour and kept throwing it up. Then it finally passed and I was fine. For two days I have been fine, no problems. Well today, 1 hour after I ate, I drank some water again and had the same thing happen again. I could not get water to go down, and threw it up. I only had to throw up once and then I was able to get water to pass, and have had no issues since. I talked to my surgeon and he said it sounds like my stomach may still be swollen and that I should go back to full liquid diet for 3 days and start taking Prilosec OTC for morning and night. He said after three days reintroduce food slowly. So has anyone else had this happen? Could it be that I am getting a stricture? Getting a stricture is my worst fear. I know I need to trust my doctor and see how things go, doing the 3 day full liquid and the meds. Just wanted to see if anyone has had this happen, and what the outcome was for them? i started soft foods two weeks ago and then regular foods this past week (although I pretty much am only eating soft foods still), and I am really not able to eat much at all. Example, my diet yesterday was a Protein Shake for Breakfast. A greek yogurt for snack. 1 meatball, chewed to mush for lunch, babybel for snack, 3 small bites of tuna for supper. Then lots of liquids all throughout the day. Anyone have any thoughts!! Thanks!!

Hi! I'm a singer and had surgery in December. The first couple days my throat was sore from the breathing tube, but less than a week later I was singing. My breath support wasn't as good until about 2 weeks out. I had some pain on my right side from them cutting through the muscle during surgery to place the band, so that's why. I don't have acid reflux or anything, and I've been just fine since the surgery. I've recently hid the 30-lb mark and my voice is still doing just fine; in fact, I'd say it's better. However, I'm only 24, so my voice is still changing somewhat. I haven't thrown up at all since having the surgery, and I think if that happens a lot it could affect the voice. I've been very fortunate in that way. I also don't have any acid reflux, which can affect the voice as well. Overall, I feel like it's been a very smooth transition for me. Good luck!

You can do the liquid diet. For my first surgery I had to lose 10% of my weight. I did a medically supervised liquid diet for 63 days with three meals that I cheated on (with the doctors permission)- high Protein, low carb. Find something to do with your hands. I learned to crochet during my diet.

Hi, The surgery happened yesterday; I went in at 5:15am and went to surgery at 7:30am. I was discharged at about 1:00pm. I had my surgery in Orange County, CA. I actually had a herniea repair also (it took an additional 30 minutes for this); I didn't even know I had one until last week when they did an EDG because of something they saw on my upper GI. There were no other problems that came up. The doctor said that it went well. I'm sore but that is to be expected. It is mostly hard getting up and down, but I'm okay when standing or laying. I think I may be having some gas pains in my shoulder today and was surprised that my neck is sore. I'm just thankful that it is over with and can't wait til the soreness goes away. Thanks for the prayer - I'll say one for you too.

Only one more week to go. I am worried he is going to cancel me. I don't feel like I have been losing anything over these past 2 weeks. How can I not be losing when I am only getting about 1000 calories a day? I am excited and worried and scared all at once with all of these thoughts starting to go through my head. I hope it doesn't get canceled and I hope everything goes well if it doesn't.

Healing Phase - Feeling In Throat
sissy12 replied to cmoody821's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm two weeks out, I have not had that feeling but I've heard it is pretty common. The P.A. even mentioned it to me today. I'm sure one of the many knowledgeable posters will answer your questions, and we'll both know -
I can only take liquid tylenol and I am 3 weeks out.

Trying not to stress!
Boofster replied to manderdjs's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You'll do fine! Good luck. In a few weeks you'll wonder what all that nervousness was about. -
Heartburn and gas pains r 2 totally different entities. I never had heartburn pre sleeve, but I had severe nightime reflux (from a slipped lapband). After my sleeve, I lost the reflux and gained horrible daytime heartburn. Didn't even have to eat/drink anything. My dr had taken me off my pre surgery medication (Prilosec) and changed me to Pepcid. Wasn't doing anything so I switched myself back to Prilosec 2x a day to see if it worked. It did. He approved it the following week. If u haven't asked ur dr about a PPI, do so now. I will most likely take it forever. It's small price to pay for no reflux or heartburn and to avoid obesity. U can buy OTC PPI's also. Presurgery I would take RX Prilosec, OTC Zantac (about 4x the normal dose) and lotsa Tums everynight just so I wouldn't vomit stomach acid onto my pillow. Now I just take Prilosec (and an occasional Tums) and I'm fine. Good luck!

7 Months Into Process... Still Waiting
MinaT replied to Obsidian's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You are almost under 400 pounds now, so you are close. Some insurances require six months consecutive appointments. For this reason, I would make sure you still visit the doctor's appointments for weigh ins and check in with them once a month until you are ready for the surgery. If it's been a few weeks, call and make an appointment so they know you are still serious. You are so close to 400 now, so be proud. You can still continue your swimming for now, because they would still have to set you up with a surgeon, then it has to go to your insurance company and you have to wait for approval there, that takes like a month and then they will have to schedule the surgery. That would put you closer to the end of summer, so you don't lose swim time. I have neurological and chronic pain issues including lupus. Swimming is my relief from pain. I had surgery June 4th and I was so worried about losing out on my swim time. As far as chickening out or anxiety, I really hope that you can let go of the anxiety. I am married with a family. I have a brain tumor, lupus, and I was over 300 pounds and I realized if I didn't get help I was going to die because of my weight, not the brain tumor, not the lupus, but because of my weight. I worked hard before my surgery to lose weight like you are doing now, to make the surgery easier on me. I realized I would rather die trying to get healthier than to die sitting on the couch, waiting to die. The pain is temporary, it's completely worth it, the world will open up for you and you will find less anxiety when the weight of the world is off your shoulders, your chest, your back, your knees, your hips. Life still throws curve balls, but I know i am better able to handle them now. Think about what you are doing for yourself. Anxiety...is a part of my life but when it came to this surgery, I let it go, because I knew what I was doing was worth it. I'd rather die trying than lay there dying. You have until the day you have surgery to cancel. Don't stop after you got this far. If you feel the day of surgery you can't do it, then you gave it your best shot, but don't stop the process by finding ways to have them call it off on you. Keep fighting until the day comes. Best of luck to you, you can do it if you put yourself into this and stay positive. You are worth it. -
I am having three shakes per day, a control bar and then a baked chicken breast for dinner. I was eating steamed veggies everyday but but now only once in awhile. Popsicles and SF jello for snacks.

When you say hungry, do you mean cravings or actual hunger pangs? You really shouldn't be feeling hunger pangs. If you're having cravings, it's most likely that you are bored or an emotional eater. I didn't start feeling hungry again until several weeks afterwards. I was on liquids for at least 3 weeks. I could not handle anything else because my stomach was so swollen from the surgery (which is normal).

So guys. HOW did I lose 5 pounds in 1 day??? I mean, I was expecting to be a little heavier because of all the fluids from the IV for 2 days, but instead, I'm actually down 5 pounds??? I'm not knocking it, of course, but it caught me off guard lol I'll be weighing myself once a week. I refuse to do daily weigh ins and get upset when it fluctuates a pound or so either way. I've been struggling with gas pain, and thanks to the great suggestions, my husband went out and got me a heating pad and it's starting to help. Also having pain from the incisions, but I was already expecting that. And the PAIN from taking my pills was the worst of all. BUT, I started taking them with warm broth and it's been a game changer. Still takes me almost an hour to take them since I get full really fast, but at least it's pain free taking them now.

Surgery is tomorrow!
Katcloudshepherd replied to yungshi's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
yungshi, Good luck tomorrow. Hope everything goes well for you. When they clear you for liquids, sip, sip, sip. You'll be surprised how difficult it is to drink after surgery and dehydration is your primary concern after surgery. Walk as much as you can. Give your body the time it needs to heal. Takes a good 4 weeks for the sleeve to heal. Blessings, Kathleen -
My scale "teased" me... it was incredibly mean.
Catherine Shinn Habhab replied to Strangefruit's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I made the mistake of weighing myself on a couple of different scales.....now I don't know which one is my true weight. I wish that I could go every week to the doc's office for weigh in, but it's an hour away. -
Head hunger / Post op day 5
Lisa :) replied to Smokey12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery two weeks before Thanksgiving last year and it was reported to me by my family that they thought I might kill someone!!! LOL!!! I remember just wanting to put REAL food in my mouth. And the fact that EVERY SINGLE commercial on TV was food related didn't help the situation!! I was miserable and miserable to be around!!! Hang in there....the holidays will pass, you'll move on to real food (eventually) and you'll love your sleeve!!! I like to equate having this surgery with giving birth....It seems absolutely horrible at the time and you ask yourself why you did it. But then when you look back on it a year later, you say it wasn't that bad and you'd do it all over again!!! -
Having trouble eating solid food- is this cheating?
gwbicster posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I am just starting the "soft solids" phase (I am a month out). My plan says I am allowed 2-3 ounces for the next two weeks. This is how much food I normally prepare. But in reality, there is just no way I can eat that much in one sitting without either throwing up or getting right to the edge. Fortunately I've figured out how to tell when I am getting to that point and STOPPING before it gets to be bad. What I find myself doing, however, might not be so constructive, and I wanted to get your feedback about it. I will wait at least 40 minutes to have some water, which as someone pointed out "washes out" the sleeve. Now I realize that I'm supposed to leave at least 2-1/2 hours between meals/snacks, but I find myself "ready" to finish the part of the portion that I didn't eat pretty quickly (another hour?) after liquids. Part of me feels it's OK as I didn't really "finish" my "portion" and it feels like I might be simply completing my meal. But I've also read the warnings about "grazing" and I feel like this might be categorized as such. What thinks you veterans? Am I setting some bad habits for further down the line? Or is this a reasonable way to proceed until my sleeve becomes more able to tolerate "normal" portions of food. Curious as to your opinions. Thank you. -
Weight Prior To Surgery, X# Weeks Diet Question
horsegirl315 replied to BeGuiled's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Dr only requires me to do clear liquids the day before surgery, but I may start a few days ahead of time because ill probably be too nervous to eat anyway! Different doctors require different things, I have not been able to figure out why some require a liquid diet for two week, some for one weeks and some not at all -

Statistics of weight regain without WLS?
NtvTxn replied to disappearingme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tijuana - I totally DISAGREE - I think 99.9% of all diets fail reguardless of BMI. I've done everything from diet pills, Optifast to WW - to seeing a nutritionist. I've lost and regained anywhere from 15 lbs, 20 lbs all the way to 50 lbs (i lost 50 lbs three different times in my life!!!). Each and every single time I regained it all, some times plus some - obviously! I am certain I screwed up my metabolism with all the yo you dieting....and the pills. Yikes, I was one of the phen phen users. I only did it a short time when the scare happened. I had to spend money to have my heart checked out, luckily I was fine....and I never, ever took another diet pill. It cured me! Anyway......I think you missed that percentage just a little!!! -
Jacqui - WOO HOOO for you!!! Congrats that it went so easy. I was in WAY pain after my surgery and it took about a week to feel right. You go on with your bad self, girl!!!!

I lost 21 lbs and then the past 3 days nothing. I know stalls happen. I know I am having problems getting in all of my Water and Protein. I assume this is why? Emotionally it just tends to feel like the scale will never move again. I just now feel better as far as pain goes and I'm 12 days out. Any other ideas? Sent from my iPhone using VST
